Sony fully supportive of devs wanting to patch trophies into old games

First and third parties to get all the help they need, says PSN boss
Sony's PlayStation Network director of operations, Eric Lempel, has said that Sony will fully support any developers who want to patch trophies into their games that are already on sale.

"Right off the bat when the firmware update goes live we'll be patching Super Stardust HD, so that game will include Trophies from Wednesday," Lempel told Next-Gen. "We're also patching Warhawk and PAIN, while Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, a completely offline title, will also be patched over the network, so it's definitely an option for developers and we're fully supporting first and third parties that want to patch, and of course those that want to implement this system going forward with new titles."

There are still a few features missing in the new update, but Lempel added that 2.4 wouldn't be the last PS3 firmware enhancement. "We're not going to stop enhancing the features. Every time we do a firmware update we enhance old features as well as providing new features, so we're taking a lot of the feedback very seriously. Going into this we knew there were some things that wouldn't make it but there's always time to fix those and get them in, but in the meantime this should keep consumers satisfied for some time."

And it look likes PSN will remain free, at least for the short term. "We're happy with what we're doing right now and we're going to stick with it," he stated. "I think being free is always an advantage. The fact that it's free is nice for consumers who want to try out the online experience, those who may be new to it and may not be ready to commit to spending dollars, and that's a really good message for us.

"Being free also gives them the opportunity to spend the money that they may have spent on a subscription on online items or online games instead. We have a ton of games for the price of a subscription and offer a significant amount of great original content that you can't get anywhere else."

I should bloody well hope so too, really.

Actually, you'd have thought that it might have been a good idea for them to release the dev toolkits for the trophy system some time beforehand, so that games could be patched with trophy support before the update went live. Blegh. Get what you (dont) pay for I guess.

Nice to hear Uncharted will be getting them, but sicne I just traded it in because there was a lack of anything to do after you complete it, I don't see me getting much use out of that one. Now, if Konami were to introduce them to MGS4...

The fact that it's free is nice for consumers who want to try out the online experience, those who may be new to it and may not be ready to commit to spending dollars

Hence why trial XBL Gold memberships are available. Duh.

Not in the EU, you don't. US / Japan regions might be different, but the 'great original content' is sorely lacking round these parts.

sony realy should have been prepared for trophies.
1 game? woop-de-bloody-doo!
i was realy looking forward to going through my old games and i waited for trophies before i started any of them!!! but one game? and i dont even have it or any of the others mentioned! (apart from uncharted, sweet game)

where are the trophies for heavenly sword, folklore, MGS4 and resistance?

all exclucive games should have been ready AT LEAST!
Syine on 2 Jul '08
I was quite excited when I got the update. But then it suddenly hit me that there's nothing I can actually do with it at this moment LOL No games I own support the Custom Music OR Trophys LOL

I guess we now play the waiting game for the trophy patches Sad

Nah... it's no different here in the US. Resistance and MGS4... that's about it for great exclusives. I'm glad a got a PS3, BlueRay is awesome, but the 360 is kicking it's tail in the exclusives department. Only the die hard Sony fanboys would deny that.

And what the frack? No games with trophies yet? And here I was going to buy a non-exclusive 3rd party title or two to try out the new trophies. ./sigh

Just picked up uncharted so it'll be good to play through it and see what the trophies are really like.

I'm also glad Sony are getting their act together and finally getting some decent features into the online service. As for it being free hopefully it will last but how long is anyones guess. MS will always provide a better online service because firstly you pay for it and second they've got a far better background in networking and online etc so should have a better knowledge of what works and what doesn't.

And they will....

But's it's completly true that XBl is far better and the 360 has the better exclusives, I'm a PS3 owner and openly admit it but some just can't as they are so far up the fanboy tree there ego won't let them.

XBL is better, feature-wise. But I have always thought that it looked s**t, like it was designed by fisher-price or something. MS need to give it a more "adult" look.

Ammy u traitor!
Nah i agree XBL is a better service, but PSN is free and not the main attraction of PS3. I think XBL is the main reason people would buy a 360 (apart from cost), whereas PS3 has great multimedia facilities.

I'd agree that XBL is a better service but I think it's good that Sony are actually doing something to better it's own online service. They've still got a longway to go to even match XBL but at least it's looking up for PS3 owners. The trophies are a great idea but what was the point of releasing it if there's no games that can use it yet? pretty pointless really! Rolling Eyes
Oh and although I'd also agree that the 360 has the better first party title's, MGS4 is reason to own a PS3 alone which is why it's better to own both consoles.

Another time that sony have got the shovel & the s**t the wrong way round... see this is what happens when you get arrogant, fat & bloated & start thinking, " ahh f**k gaming people will buy our console whatever we do", now they have to play catch up & everything's f**ked up. If they'd of thought about the PSN & online gaming like 4 years ago! then this would of all been sorted... c**ks.

you;'ve confused Xbox Live with the look of the Xbox 360 dashboard, haven't you? Razz

I agree to an extend, the dashboard isnt the most wonderful looking thing in the world, but its a *lot* easier to use than the effed-up PS3 interface.

Is there any financial reason to patch the trophy system into older games? If not then why in the hell would they bother? Would anyone buy a game they already traded in just to get trophies? Nevermind as PS3 fanboys would. Hell some of them will buy multiple versions of the same console just because they come out with a different colored case. So damn sad really.

If people saw an old game in the shops with a big logo saying 'trophy support included' then theres a chance that game would get more sales, so yes there may be a financial reason.

Until devs are convinced that people care about trophies though, nothing will happen.

I'm not a "die hard Sony fanboy"; I do own a PS3, but I also own a Wii, and above all else I prefer the PC. And I do deny that the 360 has better exclusives than the PS3.

Gears of War and Mass Effect are both on the PC (and if you've got the hardware, look better than their 360 counterparts), so the only "great" exclusive the 360 really has is Halo 3. And that'll most likely be on the PC in the next year or so, too.

As for future games, chances are extremely high that GoW 2, ME 2, and Fable 2 will all be out in the PC (considering the original games all were). The only future 360 games I can think of that will be true exclusives are Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts and Infinite Undiscovery.

On the other hand, PS3 owners can look forward to games like God of War 3, Killzone 2, Resistance 2, Little Big Planet, Final Fantasy XIII, Heavy Rain, and Siren: Blood Curse, content in the knowledge that the PS3 really is the only system they'll be able to play those games on (barring future emulators, of course).

BTW no, a game is *not* a 360 exclusive if it's also on the PC. That's just a 360 fanboy excuse. I mean, Oblivion and BioShock were both originally 360/PC games (the PS3 versions not being announced yet alone released until sometime after the initial release), yet I don't recall anyone claiming they were 360 exclusives, not even timed exclusives. So what's the diff?

P.S. Resistance and MGS are "about it" for great PS3 exclusives? So what about Uncharted and Ratchet & Clank: Tools of Destruction?
