Diablo fans petition against Diablo III

Graphical style not dark and gritty enough...
Diablo fans are petitioning Blizzard to goth up Diablo III, claiming that it deviates too much from the art direction of the original titles.

The petition, currently hosting 10,000 signatures, calls upon the development team to ditch what they perceive as "cartoon'ish art direction" that is influenced by the mighty Warcraft.

Topping the list of complaints is the omission of the light radius. In the original titles, everything outside a certain radius of the character was shadowed.

This function does not appear to be implemented in the dungeon shots of Diablo III.

Fans have even gone so far as to doctor Diablo III images to demonstrate their concerns. To be fair, we think they have a point. If you check out the picture on the right, the 'after' shot not only looks a lot better, but more like what we're experiencing in our current Diablo II play through.

A little bit more pedantic are the calls for Blizzard to ditch the blue/green tint to Diablo III's dungeons. The second before/after shot we've included is supposed to highlight what they mean, but it's hardly convincing. We were with you until this point, Diablo massive.

To take a look at more of their demands and see more screenshots, check out the petition online. And sign it if you feel that strongly about it. This is Blizzard, so it might do some good...

The game does look extremely dated its like going back to the Amiga days, but a petition?... come on, get a grip.... Rolling Eyes

I signed it. Those "before/after" pics won me over. Hope Blizzard listens...
Ulgen on 3 Jul '08
Personally, considering its a game which you've seen about 2 different environments of, why petition?
You hardly know what the rest of the game looks like, and personally, that dungeon section looked perfectly respectable to me, sure the colours were reasonably vibrant, but not excessively so.
It just highlights your surroundings better than the bleached "after" shot the petition makers put up.
Until I've seen more, I'm not swinging either way.

Ok i whilst i agree the after shot is more diablo, than the warcraft esque originals and personally i would prefer the darker game i have one thing to say.

You ingrateful dicks, you should be stoked they even give a s**t. Diablo 2 is still one of my all time favourite games and i will buy diablo 3 no matter what blizzard does. Im sure the modding community could throw together a lighting patch in a matter of days if they feel so inclined. Just to reiterate dicks!

So if Diablo 3 featured Jar Jar Binks as the main character, 'comically' slipping over and causing 'hilarious' mayhem, you'd still buy it?

You might disagree with them, but they have a right to criticise.

I understand that, which is why soul calibre 4 seems to be irritating many fans.

The fact remains that isnt what they have done is it, and seems a bit churlish and petty of you, can you honestly see that happening plus blizzard have always injected some lighthearted elements into their games cow level for instance. What i object to is an over riding air of critiscism without honestly praising them for finally reviving the series and what looks to be a great game coming our way. Seriously a petition seems overly harsh, blizzard takes note of its fans and forums so why take it to such a degree. Seems a tad disrespectful.

Lol like hollywoods remark, but come on if you were at blizzard wouldnt you feel slightly p**sed!

THIS BLOODY WEBSITE IS DRIVING ME CRAZY. WHY IS IT SO SLOW? THE VIDEO PLAYER IS DODGY AT BEST?! WHAT'S GOING ON?! THIS CERTAINLY DOESN'T REFLECT PCZ AS A MAG! SORT IT OUT!!!!!!

It makes me die, every week there seems to be a article sayin "Killzone 2 looks still looks too gritty and grey". Then along comes a game with a TINY bit of colour in and now its the other way round. Rolling Eyes

Like people have said we have only seen a very small % of this game so a petition is a little OTT. When you start putting your sigature down for a video game petition then that is when you know you need to get a life. Games are supposed to be a fun past time so lets keep it that way.
Johnny_5 on 3 Jul '08
What a bunch of moaners! I second the 'get a life/get out of the bedroom' comments aleady mentioned. Blizzard aren't going to come round to your house and destroy all your copies of Diablo II. If that's what you prefer you'll still be able to keep playing it.
-Doomus- on 3 Jul '08
And I thought the game was stuck in the past already.

Tell you what, just dont buy it, just because these 'fans' played the previous releases and number 3 isnt what they had hoped or dreamed of it looking, well tough eh, stop stamping your feet and making silly petitions

Wasn't there a petition trying to stop Devil May Cry 4 coming to the 360 too? Seriously, people will petition anything.
Except the stuff they should (fuel prices, perhaps).

Stupid hardcore diablo fans, cant you accept a new approach?

something i disliked about the diablo game was that darkness, it looks much better if you can see everything on screen, and the new diablo 3 approach does just that without overdoing it, it kinda reminds me of Warcraft 3 and thats no bad thing imo.

Just add an option to the game. A lights on/off mode. Solved.

I should work for Blizz :/

22,000 is still a teeny tiny percentage of the people that are fans of diablo and/or people that will rush out and buy diablo3 the day it comes out.

having said that, blizzard are pretty much kings of the castle when it comes to actually listening to and caring about thier fans, so we'll see.

I hope blizzard ignores the 12 people who want the change and plough on ahead!
theboosh on 3 Jul '08
Jeez, the game looks like a PS1 game, and people are complaining about the colour?! That's the last thing I'd be moaning about!

Anyway, why should Blizzard change anything? It's their game, they can do what they want. Every game going these days seems to be afraid of using anything but greys and browns lest it becomes accused of looking "cartoonish". It's not exactly Monsters Inc. is it?

Here's a thought. You're playing in an isometric computer game - a style not often lauded for its immersive benefits - where you fight monsters and explore dungeons. You have swords, magic and the usual array of character classes. Short of having the cast of Loony Toons as NPCs, could you get much more cartoon-like?
Mappman on 3 Jul '08

What a stupid comment. I picked this one out of many because it uses PS1 as an example. Have you played a PS1 game lately? Didn't think so. It looks fine. The coclours are fine. It's not all about graphics though, is it? (unless you own a console)

How about just adding a "desaturate filter" option. Because that's what the "fans" have done to the picture...

What's wrong with isometric perspective?

I posted this as soon as I saw it :

They are taking the lame, cartoony, light art style of World of Warcraft and blending it into Diablo. Diablo I/II are very dark, violent games. The atmosphere and art style is what separates the game from other traditional fantasy RPGs. It is vital they keep this. Also, the music must remain moody and dark.

WoW has a rubbish art style imo, and it does seem they are using that as some kinda influence on this title. Please god no!!!

I'm def signing this petition,
Suivaloom on 3 Jul '08
OMG OMG OMG. Calm the jew down!

How can people be like that? You see it happen with every game! Fallout 3, Prince of Persia (yes, it's not in 2D anymore...), TF2, Battlefield and many, many MANY more.

Things change. Accept it. Freaks. Get a life and share it amongst yourseves.

I'm def signing this petition,

1) You're wrong, the screenshots look nothing like WoW. Not even remotely. No, not even a blend of WoW and Diablo. All they've done is put up a few daylight screens, whats wrong with that?

2) They know what made Diablo 1 and 2 great, just like they knew what (imo) made WC1 and 2 great when they made WC3. You will have your dark and gritty dungeons and feel. Be patient. D3 will be a massive game, length wise. Whats released so far isnt the whole game. Calm down.

3) Not a real point, but WoWs art style isnt that bad tbh Razz

4) To anyone who has signed the petition : If you want to play D2 graphics, go and damn well play D2. Progress happens. Most of the times if this progress causes any real flaws it is in gameplay and far more rarely graphics (see Deus Ex -> Invisible War, what a rubbish sequel Sad )

This game is going to be in development for the next couple years atleast. Stuff will change.

jstar on 4 Jul '08
I agree that this new visual approch is a bad move, the photoshopped images around look atmospherically filled.

For those disagreeing, stating that this looks ok or that change is enevitable. I can agree on gamplay levels but the vision of the game stays the same... can you imagine if Resident Evil4 popped up in cel-shaded graphics? No! Hell no!

Yes things do change, but why fix whats not broken.
And this game is being made for the fans, not to revive an ip and not some money grabing enterprise.
ryddah on 4 Jul '08
I was so chuffed when I heard that Diablo III was being worked on and I am genuinely excited about getting the game when it hits the shelves. So to tide me over until then, I decided to download the 560MB HD movie from the Blizzard website to see what it will look like...

It looks sweeeet! The character animations are great, the atmosphere (music included) is absolutely right up there with the original series of Diablo games (of which I have all). The boss creatures look awesome! And it will even support DirectX 10.1, so I'm sure when it is fully tweaked by release day it will look delicious.

I do agree to a point that the darker versions made by some of the critics looked a bit more ominous. And I'm sure the devs have noticed the difference and will consider the idea (I have a lot of faith in Blizzard and their devs). Either way though it will look great, just check out the movie!

Signing a petition about it was definitely not cool though. It's arrogant, dissrespectful and shows zero grattitude towards the hard working people that have spent much time and love creating this 3rd installment for us. A thread on a forum is one thing, but a petition is downright insulting.

Although 20,000+ sig's sounds like a lot, quoting Wikipedia for a moment:

' Diablo II was awarded a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records 2000 edition for being the fastest selling computer game ever sold, with more than 1 million units sold in the first two weeks of availability;[8] according to the 2008 Guinness Gamer's Edition, the title still holds the record.[9] As of August 29, 2001, Diablo II has sold 4 million copies worldwide.

...so I guess 20k sig's really isn't statistically much when you consider the potential fanbase out there.

I will definitely buy this game when it's released, and wish Blizzard and their devs the best of luck in it's development... Much respect! Very Happy

DIABLO 3

A petition against Diablo 3? That’s ridiculous. Every gamer who has had the Diablo experience has been awaiting eagerly the third in the sequence. As most gamers would agree Diablo 2 is the greatest RPG ever to be created, and a definite feather in the cap for Blizzards wonderful creative team. (Returning to the present day).

END OF ADORATION

When Blizzard finally decided it was time for the third Diablo to emerge from a portal of suppressed impatientness it was greeted with thousands of fans rushing to the site and watching the game play video. upon doing this thousands of minds were all simultaneously thinking (OMG THIS CANNOT BE DIABLO
3). And they are right to do this, I know what your thinking, and yes I am a die hard Diablo 2 fan. and yes, Diablo 3 is different, (Shocker even for me) however it does seem to me that Blizzard find it difficult to make crap games.

1) Blizzard are one of the best at listening to their customers constructive criticism and acting upon it.

2) I believe that the RPG PC end of gaming has reached an all time low, meaning that what RPG computer game designers are doing is wrong. Blizzard are taking a bold and new approach to this, (by seizing the metaphorical bull by the horns and ripping its head in half with true Diablo 2 style) they are hoping to create a new style of RPG gaming.

3) By this I mean in simpler terms that they are adding many things to make the game play more attention grabbing, (all you die hard Diablo 2 fans will remember the Gruelling task of walking through a dungeon and clearing it walking through any traps as if they were a bit of gravel flicking off a boot.) Ok so it was fun a first, but then a bit later it got tiresome. So on cue blizzard have done some of their amazing tricks and have created a game with completely interactive scenery, by this I mean, animated traps, walls that can be broken, ambushes and many more things to come.

4) And someone started a petition all over I would say is the contrast, (it's not dark enough said the poor child bleached white from his years of toiling behind the computer.) The thing is if you dislike the game don't buy it, carry on playing Diablo 2, but you will be missing out on one of the greatest RPG's that the gaming world will probably ever see.

BUT MOST OF ALL DON’T SPOIL IT!

for everyone who wants to buy the game I’d say your making the right choice, I mean come on you will never know until you try it.

For all you pessimists who think it will be a flop, why not just download a demo, Blizzard are bound to bring one out, it can’t hurt to try

My final point is PETITIONERS HAVE SOME RESPECT. If you like Blizzard enough to play their previous games, then you will probably like their next one.

If you are the person who created this silly petition reply on the forum and explain why you have a problem then maybe someone can relay it and it could be remedied.
Jack_Rabbit on 7 Jul '08
There are now 38965 signatures on the petition. I signed it as well but mean no disrespect in anyway towards the hard working developers at blizzard. Its just that i have seen some images of Diablo 3 that look almost as if they were from WoW. Don't get me started on WoW. yes I've heard the argument that its got 10 million users. They dropped the ball on that one.

i saw the concept art and was impressed but then saw the game play shots and couldn't believe my eyes. i hope its just some early stuff they just threw out there for the sake of it to help hype it up. a petition is little different from a blog in a forum it just shows how many ppl support the argument made.

If the concept art is anything to go by the game will be quite like what was asked for in the petition any way. I am grateful that they even r making the game i just dont want it to turn out to be one of those over hyped games that turn to a piece of s**t. i do have to admit that i may have been over zealous in signing the petition and again want to make it clear i meant no offense towards the blizzard team working on Diablo 3. i just dont want the graphics to resemble World of Warcraft it would not suit the games theme if they did use those graphics.
Durer on 9 Jul '08
I think the graphic layout looks great Razz nout wrong with adding a few daytime enviroments as once you enter the dungeons its where things get dark grungy and bloody!

To all the d2 fan boys that wanna ruin what looks like a well detailed game just to make it "darker" take your heads outta ya ass's and take a look around it's 2008!! The gameplay vid still looks dark but not dark enough so you miss vital enviromental effects like the falling walls and physics that are been added!

last thing you need is to do a floor smash and loose a good piece of loot due to a ambush having it fly outta view due to p**s poor lighting!
Thats my view on it anyway Razz
