Codemasters' elusive war sequel, Operation Flashpoint 2, has reared its head and is looking rather stunning in the pages of the latest PC Gamer UK, on shelves now.
PC Gamer calls Codies' war zone "the most mind-bogglingly vast and mercilessly realistic battlefield gaming has ever known," which couldn't be higher praise if they tried, really.
"Operation Flashpoint 2: Dragon Rising is the sequel to the best soldier sim ever created," says PC Gamer. "It's a game being built to exacting specifications by military obsessives, to simulate the authentic behaviour of battle-hardened troops and push PC's to their limits."
And by the look of these four screenshots we've been supplied, it's going to push our PCs off the side of the desk and out the window.
The full preview in Issue 190 contains eight pages of new info and details on how Codies is pain-stakingly recreating the weapons and manoeuvres of a real soldier, including the beefiest-looking assault rifle we've ever seen.
It's looking and sounding very promising indeed. You can find the full issue on newsstands right now, and expect much more on Operation Flashpoint 2 on these pages very soon.
The original required a pretty damned powerful pc to run at the time. It was a very realistic and enjoyable game though. I've still got it kicking about upstairs somewhere! Looking forward to this! ^^
Hard. Very hard. I loved it and I can't wait for this (even though it's not the same team making it) but it was very vicious in it's difficulty. You'd be walking along and then you'd die... no idea where it came from but a bullet hit you. You'd restart and then try going a little more careful and then you die. Then you'd restart, hit the floor, crawl for about 20 mins to get where you were last time and spot someone - someone looking straight at you... And you'd see the flash. And die. But the point there was, that you'd then try again...

OFP 2 will probably have a better story/campaign and have more polished graphics and interface but ArmA 2 is the true next generation of the game that was once know as Operation Flashpoint. ArmA 2 will probably be much more customisable and give the player more freedom.
Also I am not sure about Codemasters any more. GRID has excellent gameplay and graphics but appalling menus that do not give you enough options to customise your race and a very very very bad multiplayer browser. I complained in their forums and I was banned.

I'm just happy that we are going to get, essentially, 2 operation flashpoint 2's... If you get my drift...
I fell in love with the first one when I was about 4ft tall. That game, more than any other, made me realise that war wasn't about being James Bond and shooting all the baddies, but making it to the RV point in one piece.
I hope they don't give this or ArmA 2 a 18 certificate because this is the kind of games kids need to play.
the first opf was absolutely amazing. my mind was exploding with the possibilites available. these games are not only good in themselves, but theyre a modders dream. opf was manipulated, changed and added to in every single way which is what made it so great. absolutely anything is possible

Yes I agree. Both will have their strengths and weaknesses but with the state of PC gaming these days two decent proper tactical games for the PC sounds good to me.

I remember running through countryside on Everon, my squad dead, completely lost and the light quickly fading from the evening sky as Hinds circled overhead. I felt alone and scared. I felt like I was there. That is what gaming is about. I hope there are similar moments in one of these games.

I've had moments like that too. Most of my squad were also dead... I was running through some wooded area next to an open field adjoining a village. Only to be annihilated by a shell from a tank in the village (which was about 2 clicks north-east). I swear some people used noc's or scopes to scout me out before alerting the tank to my position. Why waste a bullet on me over that distance and risk missing when you can be damned sure I'm dead with a high explosive?
Im doubtful that those are in game shots, some parts of it look like paintings as someone mentioned!!
The tank explosion in screen 4 looks touched up to me. Regardless looking forward to this a great deal. The first one was without a doubt one of the best games id ever played. Never could finish the last mission though.....
There's no way those are shots from the running game. I'm betting that they are renders using the game engine, but in any case it looks great!
I loved the first game. My main memory of it being that it was nearly impossible to see the enemy and you had to shoot at the muzzle flashes. Also of hiding from patrols and actually being afraid they would see you because it would mean certain death.
I don't think any game since has made the player more in touch with their mortality.
I used to work for codemasters. They are infamous for doctoring the screenshots they release to the public. And they fire employees for speaking about it. These may be 'screenshots', but they will be heavily photoshopped. Use your common sense people please. If its too good to be true, it probably is.
Looks like there's a pattern forming with publishers creating better sequels than the quasi-sequels of the original developers. First we have Far Cry 2, which looks to be a much better game than Crysis. Now OFP 2 looks to be a superior game to BI's Armed Assault.
Of course, this is all a bit presumptious, we'll have to wait for the final versions. But damn this looks good.
