Sony still quiet on 2.4 progress

Will you be updating before the weekend's over? Sony's saying nothing...
Sony is staying hush on when the pulled PS3 2.4 firmware update may be reinstated for download.

You, like us, would probably like to at least have a rough idea of how long it may be before Sony fixes the problem and delivers the goods, but in pestering Sony UK today, CVG was told there was "no further update".

In case you missed it, the much-anticipated update, which adds in-game XBM access and a new trophy rewards system to the PS3, among other tweaks, was launched yesterday then swiftly pulled when it emerged it was breaking consoles.

The CVG boss managed to install the new firmware without a problem. But of all the firmware updates to mess up, this should not have been the one.

I've had no problems with it so far.

They really should have made sure it was good to go though. It sounds like a rush job to me.

Me too - No problem. I checked with most forums, it seems that only 5% who are having a problem with 2.40.

No big deal!

Mine works fine but I simply cant find any news on WHEN other games like Warhawk and Uncharted will get trophy support.

I guess we'll have to wait for Sony to fix 2.4 first.

My biggest concern is all of us who have updated to 2.4 will the 2.4 fix be 2.41 because if theres issues with some PS3's whats to say ours won't be bricked sooner or later due to 2.4 bearing in mind Sony have had to go back and change whatever is the problem.
PuNkRoCkEr on 4 Jul '08
All I want is to play games ...is that too much to ask for a modern games machine???? ........please wait 1.1 update installing......

o by the way is it possible to get videos to play on the ps3 through the net sorry I'm not geeky enough.

Most of the problems from this update stem from when the machine reboots itself after installation. It seems on some consoles the hard drive ended up corrupted which caused the PS3 to freeze when booting up. If you've already installed yours and it's rebooted okay, you should be fine.

Still, it makes you wonder why it didn't effect all of us.

There are definitely a few bugs with v2.4, regardless of what anyone here says.

Sony cannot and should not release v2.4 again in its current form. Hopefully a v2.41 release will take care of all these pesky bugs.

What bugs are you getting? I've had mine running no problem(40gb with upgraded hard drive)

Yeah the bastards (sorry sony but that insult was deserved really), the update broke mine, called up the helpline, I'll have a new one in 10 days, but still its frustrating, i had to bloody download it on the day it came out. I can't even access the main XMB, never mind the in-game XMB, it just comes up with sony computer entertainment and the background and just stays like that forever!!!! Grrrrrr!!!
Anyway I'll have it back in 10 days!!!

Does C&VG or anyone know what Sony (or Microsoft for that matter) do if your out of warranty on PS3 and the firmware update bricks your otherwise ok PS3? Luckily mine isn't at that point yet but its worth bearing in mind.
There should be the option to connect to psn without having to update.

Sure, I'm happy to share. The strangest bug I've seen is this...

Started up my PS3 today, logged into PSN and started up a game. Just as I had started the game, a good friend of mine logged into PSN. I thought I'd send him a message using the IGX messaging facility. Here's where I noticed that my friend's "comment" was exactly the same as mine. Exclamation I went to have a look at his trophies and his were not the same as mine (he doesn't have any). I changed my comment and his remained the same, so shut down & turned off my PS3, turned it back on again and logged into PSN. My friend's comment was again the same as mine. Confused

Trust me when I say he wasn't just having a bit of fun. I looked this up and have seen other people reporting the same bug, only for some people - every active person on their friends list had the same comment!

I'm supposing there's at least one memory allocation or pointer bug in the new firmware. Chances are, that will not be easy to find, let alone fix, so I'm personally going to cut Sony some slack for a week (and so should everyone really). Even if Sony have all their top firmware dev's working on this - I doubt we will see a v2.41 update this weekend. It took several days for Sony + Rock* to fix a freezing problem on GTA4 startup and this is a much bigger problem - its multiple problems... In the meanwhile, I know people are screaming for blood - some of those sad souls are unable to use their PS3.

What really is funny though is that there's a hell of a lot of idiots out there WHO STILL WANT TO UPDATE TO v2.40. They need to show some patience for their own good.

As an aside, I've read about people's games crashing when they turn off (disable) their bluetooth headset. There's the theme / missing icons / default icons in IGX bug. Some people are complaining about the battery charge gauge overlapping the clock (technically that's a bug). There are also reports of people's machines occasionally freezing (possibly related?). Oh and then there's the obvious one where people have installed the update and had to reformat their HDD to get the PS3 working again.

I'm not too worried personally. Laughing My machine isn't freezing, I've been able to collect trophies on SSHD / play other games. None have given me any problems, but like I said... That's not to say there aren't bugs... Wink
LordVonPS3 on 4 Jul '08
BTW, I did log into PSN again later this evening and someone else was online. He had no comment set (I do), so that bug is either intermittent, due to a race condition - or some other combining set of factors.
LordVonPS3 on 4 Jul '08
Thats really weird!!

Realistically we're not getting this fixed for at least a week. Update was out wednesday, then they need to get the damaged consoles back to sony hq and find out what the problem is and what caused it, then program a new update.

Real pain in the ass for everyone involved.

I've had no problems with it so far, but I was a little apprehensive when it was revealed that Sony were releasing it "sooner rather than later".

Trouble is, you only tend to hear from those who have had problems, so it seems worse than it is. Many have reported COD4 causing the problem, which happened with an earlier update (2.0, I think, which was swiftly replaced with 2.01).
AJDarkstar on 5 Jul '08
I havent downloaded it as it was pulled before i came back from holiday, and i agree that this firmware update shouldnt be the one to break consolers, but i have heard nothing about it breaking consoles from the people who have downloaded it, it is probably the yanks whos consoles are breaking, but i wouldnt be suprised if they are just saying it as they are too fat to reach the controller*

*well some are

That was clearly a typo on his part.

'Only 5%' of PS3 owners = 692,000 people based on current sales numbers...

And if those people paid roughly Ł300 for their consoles, you're talking about a revenue contribution of over Ł200m.

I'm sure Sony would be happy if all those people asked for that Ł200m back...

Of course, that 5% is just a totally unofficial estimate...

i dl'd it on wed last

then today i got a error saying my hd drive is corrupted, please allow it to restore
"thank god" i thought, "nothing too bad"
after hearing about all the mess ups i was relieved..........

........until it turned off and then back on again itself after the so called "restoration" and said it still contained a corrupted hd drive
now i was worried
so i restored it again, and again and again
5 times in a row
now im coming to terms with having to get a completely new internal hd drive
eeeeeeeek!
all my saves, downloads, videos and music is gone

i blame the update
because this never happened before the update

sony- please, get your act together
im getting a new hard drive, not a new ps3 cos i still want backwards compatability and 4 usb slots (mine is the 60gb ps3)
ill also have to change my online name when i get the hard drive
so sadly Zaxdabomb is no more! Crying or Very sad

i had trouble with mine it kept on freezing i got so p**sed off that i eventually had to go get a new one. by that time they already pulled off the download.although personally i think that older 60 GB PS3's are the only ones having trouble with the update. if i am wrong let me know... even so i am really excited for the re release of the update i think it has a lot of new helpful and fun features. and i think the in game music will be put into all of the new ps3 games coming out soon and there might be updates for current games so they are also compatible with that feature

I have a 60gb original UK PAL console and the update works perfectly, but this may have something to do with me updating the 60gb hd to a 120gb hd 3 weeks ago. Its newly formatted so that may have sometyhing to do with it. My advice would be every couple of weeks back up your hd onto a removable/portable hd to prevent anything like thisfrom happening in future - admitidly it should be a problem in the firstplace.

Just recover your PSN ID! Then you dont lose your user name?? Remember it asks for your email and password?

Oh yeah and to recover lost data i really cant be bottomd typing, but search google theres loads of stuff out there to recover lost data, although you need to stick it in a PC, but im not sure how the PS3 formats data, but if you have constantly overwritten it, then we will have 2 see.
