Epic's Cliff Bleszinski has said that current control pads look like alien spaceships, and hopes that Microsoft's next Xbox will come with a pad with fewer buttons.
"I hope if there's a new Xbox that there'll be fewer buttons on the controller," he told us during a chat about Gears 2's multiplayer.
"This is purely me speculating in my own realm of game development, but if you look at a controller right now it looks like an alien spaceship," he added, going on to point at alternative methods of interaction.
"I think you could do things with a built-in camera or a little motion sensitivity. You look at the Wii controller with less buttons - they added functionality by doing waggle. Not a lot of games use the waggle well, but Super Mario Galaxy for example uses it perfectly. Zak and Wiki uses it rather well," he said.
"There are other ways of providing interactivity without having every single finger doing something at once on a friggin' controller."
So what should the hardware guys be doing in future, Cliff? "I've seen some prototype camera stuff that some friends are working on that can actually tell the depth of the world around the player, and can track individual finger movements and stuff like that. That's exciting stuff, and I think that's where it all needs to start going towards."
Look out for the full interview later today. In the meantime be sure to check out our hands-on impressions here, which also has new screens and in-game footage of Gears 2's multiplayer.
The Wii controller bugs me, the 360 has a decent amount of buttons, same as the Dual Shock III. You can easily reach them all and no game over complicates things.
Controllers are fine and the second motion sensing becomes the norm-i'll be playing Retro games. Unless motion sensing is done extremely well that is...better than the Wii.
It seems like every week he's making demands on the industry because it would be more suitable for his games, which by the way, are not all they are cracked up to be.
He seems to think that because he and his cronies created the Unreal 3 engine they have some divine right to call the shots on everything in the gaming industry.
What about, I don't know, inventive games? Games that require more than 6 buttons to play on? Oh, and about the thought of taking a leaf from the tree of wii and adding "wiggle technology" to the 360, how would this compensate for the loss of buttons on RPG's such as Kotor and etc?
Personally I love the current design of the 360 controller, there are no gimmicks attatched, it doesn't require a 20 minute rest after long playing sessions, it just works.
Dumbing down in my opinion if he gets what he wants. I like the 360 pad and each button serves a purpose most of the time. No way do I want it as simple as the Wii controller.
Don't talk crap Cliffy, the amount of buttons on there is perfectly acceptable.
Any less in fact and we'd struggle with some games.
I don't want to 'waggle' my joypad thank you, analogue sticks are fine by me.
Yep, evolve some thumbs Cliffy and you'll be A-OK. By the way, doesn't Gears use EVERY SINGLE BUTTON on the 360 controller? And that's even after you've mapped a whole load of different functions to the 'A' button.
This man, 'Cliff Belsinski' should concentrate on building up his pathetic little biceps and pour another glass of creatine over his mug
Although he is right in saying the 360 controller is the worst of the current generation, or words to that effect.
I'd say, (like many others I'd assume) that the Sixaxis was the worst of this generation. I think the 360 pad really got it right this time round (well, apart from the d-pad ).
The 360 pad is the best one ive ever used. Honestly, get a decent d-pad on there & I would say its perfect.
Theres not too many buttons, any less & we would struggle with some games as people have said. & I dont want to have motion sensing thank you very much. I just really dont like it & think it adds nothing to games. In most cases it takes away from the experience for me.
Oh, & the most I ever find myself using at one timeis 2 thumbs & a finger. Not every finger. What the hell have you been playing?

Oh and to CliffyB's comment i say less buttons on the pad would lead to more combo's of buttons being held down to do things in game which is a pain in the butt
In terms of 'action' buttons Ignoring start/home etc the wii pad has just as many as the 360. So i dunno where he's getting the idea that the wii has less buttons.

Q. Where does he rate the 360 controller as 'the worst' of this generation?
A. In your head alone
Ignore it.

The thing I like about the 360 pad is the way the addons just merge seamlessly into the controller. From the battery charging plug to the superbly designed mini keyboard. I really don't think anyone who's used the 360 pad could fault it, if they were being honest.
There is an easy solution to this.... If Epic & CB want a less complicated, motion sensing, camera thingy remote controller pad, then they should cover the cost & package it with their game, i don't wanna end up having to buy a ton of useless peripherals!... this isn't the Wii you know.
Cliford is very very tough...you can see his muscles and he has a tattoo. we should all listen to him or he will kick us in the nuts and have sex with our girls friends!!!
maybe Cliff's friends are MS and he knows more than he's letting on about their next system and control method? the days of the traditional contoller are numbered long term, i'm quite sure ot, but more's the pitty.
for a traditional controller, the 360 pad is just awesome, fits perfectly, good buttons, triggers and sensitivity in the sticks. Less said about Sony's ageing pad the better, it's just not in the same league.
@ Suivaloom - your devotion to Sony is hilarious. They don't give a crap about you, they just want your money, like everyone else.

Ahh, sorry, hadn't added that one to my blacklist yet (LordVon at the top in case you wondered). You're right about the 360 pad though - it's by far the best controller of this generation. It did take some getting used to after so many years with the DS2 wedged firmly in my grubby mitts, but it did end up being the superior bit of kit.
Fewer buttons on the 360 pad might encourage 'The Girlfriend' (TM) to play more games, but I think it's only Cliffy 'Cliffy B' B and middle-aged mums with Wii's that want less buttons - it's not like you have to use them in your game!
Why is there any need to use motion sensing in playing games? is waggling a controller any different to bashing 2 buttons quickly to go faster?
i don't believe you have to act like your character in a game to do things, a normal controller allows easy manipulation of your avatar in the game, its almost like a remote controller.
it seems to me as though people are going motion sensing crazy just for the sake of it.
What he wants is more f**king money and he sees Nintendos domination of console sales as the way to get it. Unfortunately people in retirement homes and small children won't be buying a Gears game for the Wii. I see his point I guess, stick your 360 pad in Grandmas hand and see what happens.

Hmm interesting that I find the X360 controller the best... Functional and comfortable for my deformed hands that is lol. And no lame attempt at motion control...(hint six-crap-sis)
Anyways, CliffyB couldn't be more wrong I personally thing the current gen (not including Wii) are perfect button wise and moreless design wise.
If anything Motionsensing controls need a hellava lot of work before they are anywhere NEAR ready for every console on the market. Wii can work well sometimes but I've come across some real sneezers of crap on it...
Cliffy stick to what you do and let the hardware techs do their jobs.
Better to have too many buttons than not enough buttons, or buttons in rubbish positions like xbox1 pads with the black and white buttons that made life difficult in quite a few games

learn how to talk english you f**king prat. nice one to admitting you look at boys biceps.
As for the rest of the badmouthing, anyone who has played galaxy knows that going to a "hardcore" controller is in its infancy. And anyone who has played and perfected metroid 3 knows that shooters are highly underrated on the wii and that in many cases they make the experience more immersive, i think the wii controls would make gears even better than it already is.

I now have a PS3 and owned the 360 for 2 years. I thought the 360 pad had a great feel, it felt right in your hands. However after X amount of years with a psx and ps2, it took me a good while getting used to which button/ shoulder buttons were what.
And going back to the playstation 3 pad from the 360, it felt abit basic but I was used to everything and knew where the buttons were.
I think both the pads have their quirks but without sounding like a doo-gooder, they are both as good as eachother.
The controller is near enough to perfection, not since the Snes controller have i known such comfort. Maybe Cliffy should concentrate on making an original decent game actually worth playing instead of running his overpaid mouth.
No No No, the 360 controller is totally perfect, not one single change is needed, I really hope M$ don't mess about with it too much for the next console. Cliffy needs to shut it!!!!!!! 360 pad = best console controller ever!!!!
there is only one change needed for the 360 controller
ONE CHANGE...and thats the D-pad,it needs to be seperate buttons or set out like the PS3 D-PAD,so you can't mistakenly press down instead of right..many a tetris or super puzzle fighter thing game has been ruined because of that
but other than that the 360 controller is the best controller ever released...cliffy B needs to be quiet

You are deluded if you think the Xbot controller is "the best controller ever".
Bloody far from it.
For a start the thing originally weighed close to 20lbs when first released, then the Japs complained because they have rapist hands, so M$ released the new one which you Microslaves bring to bed with you now.
PS1/2/3 controller has god-like ergonomics. It is so good, it has served gaming goodness to 200 million gamers through their hands (if you combine sales of all 3 Playstation consoles with each one coming packed with one of these beauties).
It would be a real mistake to have less buttons, like when Sega lost 2 buttons between the Saturn and the Dreamcast. It just feels dumbed down, rather than better IMO.

So which one is better? Not hard is it.
More people have Micras than Ferraris but which is the better car? Also "god-like ergonomics"?! Please, reminds me of when my girlfriend said the Mega Drive controller was more comfortable than the SNES one.
After reading all these comments I thought "its all been said, he is an idiot" but I just have to add my name to this list...CliffyB, shut up...ps love unreal 3 on PC, even tho no one plays it online

You mad T-101, a controller is supposed to be user-friendly, that is its main function. It is not meant to have the most expensive parts or have the neatest paint job.
A Ferrari is beautiful but it is not the most user-friendly car is it? Far from it.
When I drove a Ferrari once to McDonald's I can tell you it is not the most comfortable of cars.
I remember the first time I picked up a GC pad and my hands just fitted it! I loved it. Wasn't a fan of the analogue buttons though, triggers such as on the 360/DC work much better. To be honest, I've never really had a problem with any pad though, some just take a bit more getting used to than others.
The technology isn't there for really accurate motion sensing or eye toy style controls yet. If you want to make the games with fewer controls, just don't use all the buttons when you write them. Or is that just too simple?!?!?
Horngreen: Less pointless comments from Cliffy trying to stay in the public eye until GOW2 launches. I look forward to the day I open up this site and see "Cliffy B.: I prefer a tougher, more newspaperish brand of toilet paper."
I don't want to 'waggle' my joypad thank you, analogue sticks are fine by me.
*waggles pad* This is pretty good, you should try this Mr Bedo.
The 360 & PS3 have decent controllers at the moment. The only thing that sucks is the D-pads in my opinion. Also the lack of rumble on the PS3 side.
I hope that the next Xbox has pads which aren't too radically different. Thank goodness Sony never went with the pads that were in the early PS3 photos, anybody remember the boomerang controllers?
I thought the idea behind making a game for consoles is that you have to make the game fit the consoles design Look at Assasins creed, not enough buttons...
There's nothing wrong with the pad the way it is. If he dosn't want to use all the buttons thats up to him, but the option is there for devs to use them if they wish. Denying them that is stupidity in itself. Surely its better to have spare buttons in a handful of games than not enougth?
As for motion controls I hope they are not incorporated into the next pad as I personally have never got on with them and cannot stand them.
Personally, I love my 360 controller, totally prefer it over the playstation one. But there is always room for change, and they WILL change. I don't think there will be more buttons however. If anything the button count will be the same with a fair possibility of it being less. With technology advancing all the time it'll become easier to tell your computer what you want it to do. I read an example of technology that records eye movement to show where a person looks at a webpage the most....What if instead of pointing your analogue stick and hoping that your football simulation passes to your intended player, you could control that pass using eye movements? Ensuring it goes to the dude you want it to. Obviously I'm just spouting stuff here for an example, and Microsoft have kept a very similar control pad for the last two machines, just downsizing where nessecary. I'm actually quite shocked at how many of your are so against change. If it's terrible, they probably won't release it, but if our console becomes the first to use a certain super-cool technology which only enhances our game playing? I'm all for it...
Could be a matter of less buttons, more amazing-pressure-sensitive-touch-wheel-screen-virtualreality type thing?
Cliff B is a f****t and doesn't know the first thing about video gaming. For instance: he thinks Gears 2 is going to be good. He bums the console and thinks PC gaming is dead.
He made an over hype game mediocre but sold a lot. Now he thinks he got the right trash talk the Xbox spaceship. Microsoft needs to copy the SIXAXIS or Dualshock 3 those are perfect gaming controller. He should be getting ready for a beat down instead of trash talking something we all know already. Microsoft is making a new controller soon LMFAO. Even Xbox 360 developer trash talk Microsoft's spaces**t i mean controllers.
I am hugely disappointed with Nintendo's controller this generation. Normally they are a model of great product design, with Fisher-Price-like user-friendliness and exemplary use of colour and shape. For me they've always been the most comfortable and logical controllers in each generation.
Until now. The Wii-mote is a perfect example of one feature dominating and compromising everything else. There are four buttons accessible (when using the Nunchuk) - C, Z, A and B. Every other button is out of reach, some requiring the player to let go of the Wii-mote entirely. In Zelda, for instance, the d-pad, 1 and 2 and + and - buttons are all important and all impossible to access without contortion. Plus, despite all of these buttons, we've still lost the second analogue (camera) stick.
The Xbox controller on the contrary seems to be the best of the bunch. It's a logical, honed progression with everything but the d-pad feeling like the result of generations and generations of feedback and improvement. The PS3 pad is a close second.
So in my opinion this guy is crazy. It's in the hands of designers to make their games logical to use and perhaps the direction we should be heading is the Gamecube route of having some face buttons more dominant than others. In game design that's already the case with the Playstation's X and Xbox's A being the default action key.

Where the hell did i say the xbox pad is the best ever you really should read the post before replying you really are a deluded little man/boy who's been blindsided by a faceless company. wake up and smell the coffee Sony are just as bad as the rest of them look at all the s**t they were spouting at the start about how rumble technolgy is so last generation only to go and release an over priced dual shock a year later.
He made an over hype game mediocre but sold a lot. Now he thinks he got the right trash talk the Xbox spaceship. LOL if your gonna rant at least do it in ENGLISH some of you sony love monkeys really do have heads full of broken toys
Whoever said the GC controller, I second that. Rather flimsy and not the best triggers in the world but it fitted into the hand like a glove and was perfect for F-Zero - which I still think is the best futuristic racer ever made bar none BTW.
However, I've always found xbox controllers make my hands sweaty. The problem's less bad since they released the smaller version but it's still a problem IMO. I don't understand why people knock Sony for keeping the same design and praise MS for sticking with the 'winning formula'. I find the xbox controller fine until one has to attach the plug n' play lead and a wired headset for nearly three bloody hours! I used to end up feeling like I was entangled whilst juggling a weighty brick.
I now prefer using my bluetooth headset and knowing I can quickly charge the pad up whilst showering/eating supper. Used to get so vexed with my 360 controller running out an hour before bedtime. One wouldn't have the time to charge it up but there was the inevitable eventuality that it would start to turn itself off in the middle of an online deathmatch.
@TTDog - Here's one for you ---> "Dualc**k". I use it to describe people like you when the word "c**k" just doesn't suffice.

You must have very tiny hands. I can reach the 1 and 2 buttons with not too much problem. The button lay out could be better on the wiimote but it honestly isn't that bad. And you don't need the second analog with the pointer, which workd much like moving a mouse around to adjust a camera in game.
And Cliffy is only trying to say that he sees gaming going in a direction that is further from conventional control pads and interaction.
Like Mogs said, everything will more than likely go the way of the Wii next gen. Hell MS are trying to copy its pad this gen with the newton.
Honestly, I don't know why you people cry out for innovation and change and when it comes you p**s and moan.

M o r e P a y s t i o n s a i l s d o e s n o t e q u a l b e t t e r c o n t r o l l e r.
only prob i have this generation of controllers is the yucky 'convexed' L2 and R2 buttons on the PS3 controller, why the hell didnt they make them 'concaved' like a proper trigger??? you dont see guns designed with a convexed trigger lever for the simple reason it is designed to fit snuggly on the finger that way with it being concaved....

Which is why GAME now sell little attachable triggers which clip over the original PS3 ones. Only cost Ł2.99.
Nintendo basically designed the Wii around Mario Galaxy. I can guarantee no other game will use the wiimote as well as Galaxy did.
Metroid? Thought the use of the pointer was the best so far and without too many gimmicky waggles too.
You should also try SSX Blur and Heatseeker. Apart from the first five minutes when you're getting used to it the controls feel great.
Also Mario Kart, RE4 and Zack and Wiki.

I think you are the one that is deluded. The PS pad was great when it was purely digital but they just bolted those analogue sticks on with hardly any thought. It is uncomfortable and my hands used to hurt like hell after a session of GT2! Hence the phrase playstation thumb being used for aching hands.
The 360 pad however is one of the best pads created second only to the GC pad. (Although the 360 pad needs the Dpad from the Wii Classic controller)
However on Cliffy Bs point. I totally agree with him. I have been gaming for a very long time and over that time I have seen pads get more and more complex. I think 360 and PS3 have hit the maximum number of buttons you can realistically put on a pad and I for one would love to see a reduction. More buttons means more complexity and more complexity means the controls start to intrude on the gameworld. Sensible soccer is hailed(rightly so) for being one of the most playable games ever released yet it only had one button! Back then I used to feel pulled into the gameworld so completely that I completely forgot I was playing anything. Modern games have got much better graphically but in my mind all but a few have gone backwards in playability and that feeling of being absorbed into the game. The wii has redressed this balance by providing an intuitive controller although only some of the games have made good use of it's potential so far. The other problem is people that are new to gaming are put off by the complexity of the controllers, it is no wonder the Wii is such a success with this demographic.

So in my opinion this guy is crazy. It's in the hands of designers to make their games logical to use and perhaps the direction we should be heading is the Gamecube route of having some face buttons more dominant than others. In game design that's already the case with the Playstation's X and Xbox's A being the default action key.
You have some fair points but everybody I know can access the + and - buttons as well as down on the Dpad with no repositioning necessary, so I'm not sure about that claim.
Why all the Wii hate in this thread; games like Metroid Prime 3, Resident Evil 4 Wii, Zak & Wiki, Mario Kart and Super Mario Galaxy have far superior and more complex control systems than what exists on the 360/PS3, in their respective genres.
Here's one for you ---> "Dualc**k". I use it to describe people when the word "c**k" just doesn't suffice.
You must here it quite a lot then.
The Sony pad needs a major overhaul, too small, too fiddly, left stick in an awful position.
The left stick on the 360 and the Xbox S-type is in line with the buttons on the right which feels more natural, and I never ended up with cramp playing on either of those pads like i did when using my old PS1 pads... which is why i've always used 3rd party pads on PlayStation machines.
only prob i have this generation of controllers is the yucky 'convexed' L2 and R2 buttons on the PS3 controller, why the hell didnt they make them 'concaved' like a proper trigger??? you dont see guns designed with a convexed trigger lever for the simple reason it is designed to fit snuggly on the finger that way with it being concaved....
Which is why GAME now sell little attachable triggers which clip over the original PS3 ones. Only cost Ł2.99.
Which is why the PS3 pad is a bit naff.
360 pad is crackin. Next one should charge like the PS3's and have a D-Pad like the Snes. Thats all I want to see change.

I was gonna say the same thing.
Glad to see some Gamecube pad love on this thread too, I rate that pad highly.
As for the Wii controller, my big problem is it's not in the least bit ergonomic at all. If Ninty had designed and shaped it to fit in the hand, more like the nunchuk only bigger, it'd be leagues better. As it is, its a short, fat, remote control - which isn't comfortable to hold for long periods (though the silicone glove helps).
He's finally saying some true great to know he's sucking Microsoft s**t. The Xbox 360 controller looks similar to the mothership Nintendo created back in the 90s N64. And it also looks to another awkward controller the Sega Dreamcast that one sucked. I love SIXAXIS and Dualshock 1 2 and 3 why change PERFECTION. I like my Xbox 360 controller lol.

The 360 controller looks NOTHING like the N64 controller you penis. Then again, not surprised you don't know what an N64 controller looks like, you probably wasn't born when that was out.
And you may love SixAxis, but perfect it is not - far from it.

It looks nothing like the N64's three pronged controller! It is also way off the Dreamcast controller, which also did not suck at all. The dreamcast controller was absolutely fine (apart from the battery life of the VMU's).
And if we are looking back to the nineties, the PS3 pad doesn't just look like the 1997 Dual shock, it is practically identical! They have not progressed for over a decade!
Personally, I love the PS control pad, and have since the moment it came out. I'm glad Sony stuck to their guns and kept it for the PS3 and hope this continues into the next gen as well.
I don't know where all the fuss came from with the rumble though, I used to turn it off on the ps2, I didn't fid it adds anything, the pad vibrating madly like the contents of a nympho's handbag does not best represent a car crash to me!

I kind of feel the same. I think rumble is good for representing the constant vibration of driving a car but I hated it for shooters like GRAW. You'd get shot by a sniper and instead of the controller emitting a short sharp thud it would give a crappy brrrrr sound. Same thing when firing a single shot rifle - it would vibrate like I was firing an automatic.

But did they stick to their guns? It seemed to me that their prototype PS3 pad was such a laughing stock that they quickly threw together a replacement - and the easiest way to do that was base it off a previous one. Did you not see this?
Microsoft is a Copycat the Xbox 360 controller looks like a Dreamcast and a little like the N64 crap. Sony has change much of their controller because is perfect no one complaints so why change i hate Dualshock 3 triggers. Cliffy might get in trouble for talking bad about Xbox things Microsoft hates when developers say the true. I like my Xbox 360 controller i just hate playing games like GTA IV on Xbox IV.

I own 2 Xbox 360 and i can admit the true why can you stop whining. I thought Epic Games people were Xbox 360 fanboy guess their not thank god for that, this comment is great news. Microsoft is going to copy Sony and Nintendo's controller soon. You can use Xbox 360 controller on PS3 via a mod is easy to do.
I think that CliffyB, for all his talent is wrong. We need more buttons, not less. The face of the 360 pad needs two more buttons, C & Z that naturally ascend from the two strings, and the D-Pad needs to be remodeled from what it is to a full size Super NES D-Pad or a Saturn D-Pad.
If CliffyB wants to make a special GoW2 controller that comes for free with the game, more power to him. But to reduce the buttons, that's not cool. Look at the Dreamcast when it got some PS1, PC, CPS2, CPS3, Naomi, and Model 3 ports, many times having six buttons and one stick became quite a problem.

i didnt know they did that for the PS3 pads, i shall look at purchasing some for my PS3 pads cos those buttons at present are just sh*t, thanks for the info.

All PS3 controllers have TRIGGERS L2 R2 SIXAXIS and DUALSHOCK 3. Buy a PLAYSTATION 3...

Please explain how on earth the 360 pad is like a copy of the n64 pad? Have you even seen an N64 Pad? Also the N64 Pad was great for the time.

i was on about the disgusting convex shape of the L2 and R2 triggers if you read the post properly....

Because he's a deluded imbecile who was too young to game when the N64 was on our shelves... N64 Controller 360 Controller See the similarities? No, neither do I.
You know what? I like the Xbox Controller just the way it is. I like its size, and I like THE fact that they added two more buttons.. well I guess I should say *relocated*.. To me I am very happy with the Xbox 360 Controller.(So I hope Microsoft does not change it)
I don't particularly like motion controls. Now, if we had full on virtual interaction.. I would be all over that. But none of this... motion sensitivity stuff. If I wanted that I would have bought a WII.
more buttons u fools i need more controle not movement sensores there crap who wants to get moving when all u want is to sit down a down some beer and chill playing cod4.No more buttons better grip cos ps3 pad is better we need more interactive means to play games want motion sensor's put then in a headset with a screen and headphones for under 150 quid and I'll buy it.Also make every game customiseabell controles so I choose the button layouts, cos it's not allways set good are they?
I would like to see CliffyB try to play some modern console games with the Dreamcast controller. Now don't get me wrong, I love the Dreamcast, but four buttons, two triggers, one analog stick, and a D-Pad really didn't cut the mustard.
