"The kind of scenes they do in MGS4 are phenomenal. I think it has the best sound and real-time [cut scenes] I've seen in the industry and since they're the best at what they do, players love it," he added.
"It's the hallmark of the series - the camera angles and dramatic scenes and it's really taking film-making to this new digital level," he said, while admitting that his personal preference 'as a gamer' is shorter cut scenes.
"In the kind of games we do, the cut scenes are around three to four minutes on average. It just says what needs to be said and moves on to letting you actually play the game."
Look out for the full interview on the site later today.
Badass!! Sheesh, I really dislike that guy... Also, can you imagine Cliffy B having a massive cutscene in Gears 2. A 30 minute slow-mo chainsaw kill, a 30 minute slow-mo explosion and finish with a 30 minute slow-mo t-bagging sesh.

nah the 360 is way too small for all that well get the usual five hour run through of the mill crap with better online modes.
So Cliffy wants like a 2-button Wii-style control pad, with gameplay sections broken up by amazing cut scenes.
I can picture Gears 3 now:
Cutscene of Marcus running down a corridor, camera moves behind him and we get... WAGGLE CONTROLLER TO DODGE LOCUST!
Marcus reaches the end of the corridor, bursts through a door and over a cliff... TILT CONTROLLER TO AVOID OBSTACLES!
Marcus grabs a ledge and is hanging there with his gun slightly out of reach. A Locust appears and tries to kick him off and after a 5-minute struggle Marcus grabs him and tries to flick him over the edge but he ends up hanging from his legs... TAP B TO KICK LOCUST!
Marcus kicks the Locust off his feet and is struggling to hang on... FLICK CONTROLLER TO PULL YOURSELF ONTO LEDGE

Jeez Louise. Lots of pent up anger in this thread. I dont really see Gears going for the Wii style of play just like I dont think well be seeing 1 hour cut scenes infuture Gears either.
Here was me thinking he was just trying to be nice and pay a compliment to a rival.
ffs he's only giving his opinion. i agree with him in that shorter cutscenes are better. i only have a limited time to play games these days and i wouldn't want to waste that time watching a 90 minute cutscene.
Cliffy is such a douche bag, what a backhanded compliment.
Notice how he says regarding his game "It just says what needs to be said and moves on to letting you actually play the game", insinuating MGS4 is nothing more than a glorified cutscene. It's pretty hard to make a cutscene of MGS's length in his game when that turd with a hairpiece doesn't even know how to tell a good tale.
I liked GOW, but it was just a generic shooter with pretty graphics and terrible online.
I think Cliff makes fantastic games that are the best at what they do (visceral combat and short, sharp action set pieces) but agree with him that longer scenes don't hold my interest as much. If I want to watch a film, I'll watch a film. I always thought there was too much exposition in the MGS games that could have been revealed in-game (like Bioshock). GTA IV has the perfect length of cut scene for me. They engage me and hold my attention just long enough.
It's nice to see someone in the industry bigging someone else up, for once. Especially someone developing for a rival platform.

Exactly. I have maybe and 1hr or 1.5 hrs a night for games. Watching 30-40 minutes of FMV while playing MGS4 really annoyed, but I had to just to see the story. The second play through is much better now I can focus on the actual gameplay. Plus its taking sod all time as well.
Also, I've never really found the MGS4 fmv particularly rivetting or realistic. Some of it can be great but some of it is just awful. I mean that moment where Otacon is having a 5 minute deep and meaningful with Meryl while bloody great suicide Gecko bear down on them all was silly. If I was snake and Jack I'd have left the MKII and legged it. It's got wheels it can catch up
dont encourage him!!! id hate it if they turned gears (the game that is, i know theres a real hollywood movie in the pipeline) into a movie with bits of gameplay here and there.
Will people please stop with the 90-minute cut-scene myth. I've played the game through four tomes now and NONE of the cut-scenes are anywhere near 90 minutes. The longest is the last one and that's not even an hour long.
It's amazing how fast bulls**t moves on the internet.

Agreed. Just shows you that s**t sticks. Apparently there are 2 that last 90 mins. Must be secret ones.
Don't see why people are being so defensive. He's simply praised Kojima at being the best at what he does, interactive movies, and there's nothing wrong with that. As for people talking about the length of the cut-scene's, there aren't any of 90 mins length, there's a couple of successive cut-scene's that go over about an hour. The whole 90 min thing came around because Konami didn't want any of the reviews touching upon the install times, load times and cut-scene lengths so the exageration was a result of that.
Well this is the first sensible thing this meat-head has gibbered in a long while.
Maybe he should concentrate on his generic Gears of War series where the dialogue consists of a lot of cliched "INCOMING" and "snort" with a ridiculous looking, muscle-bound protagonist and characters.

They look fat.
What's with all this 'GENERIC' s**t, everything, unless its an absolutely new and never been done before idea is generic. You could argue that every game made since pong is generic, as they all belong to a group of items called games. Everybody please stop using 'GENERIC' as a cheap way to knock games you don't like, or are jealous of, because it's on another system. Todays rant over, thank you for listening, now for my pill.

So a muscle bound marine with big guns taking on aliens and swearing with toppings of violence is not generic?
Is Unchartered generic? Not really. Is Ratchet & Clank generic? Not really. Is MGS4 generic? Absolutely not.

Point proved. Time to take my line.
I think you had better look up the meaning of generic, you should have plenty of time now schools out.

wooooahh bit defensive there! terrible online? did you play the same game? it's not the best online game but not terrible . I wonder which game would get more play time mgs or gears????? well gears would have atleast a 6 hour start

It is a glorified cutscene. But that isn't what Cliffy was saying really.

Neither does Kojima. For an example of well crafted stories in games, see Planescape: Torment or Deus Ex.
This guy makes me laugh, anyone whos played MGS4 knows very well there isnt any 90 minute cut-scenes they range from 15-20 minutes through out the game, bar the last one which is about 50 minutes in total
Having played MGS4 through 2 times I really can't see a problem with the cut scenes wanting to play a game is all well and good but mgs4 has always been about its cut scenes and story telling (not an easy story to follow but there you are) I have yet to play another game which has as much wow factor (game play and story) than MGS4 has and it probably won't happen again until MGS5 but slating it because of its lengthy cut scenes is just wrong.

Cliffy saying that you actually play in his games games insinuates that you don't play in MGS4.
Kojima's MGS series says enough about his ability to spin a good tale.
And for the guy talking about the MP in Gears, It was terrible. That game got old after a few play throughs. It's no where near the worst offering MP wise, but that doesn't make it good.
There are many, many games that tell a better story than MGS and told in a less intrusive way. I've been watching a few of the cut scenes on youtube (ok, the quality suffers- but it's better than buying a PS3 if that's all you were gonna buy on it!) and they are mostly so, so dull. I'm sure they get better towards the end- I think I managed about an hours worth before the overly cheesy voice acting and that bloke farting all the time got to me.
Gears of War isn't trying to tell some ridiculously deep story- it's a game, not a film- and in my opinion, it's a hell of a lot more fun. Cliffy B maybe a "meathead"- but at least he's not so stuck up his own rear-end he has to clean his teeth with a bog brush. Oh and speaking of generic- soldiers with super powers and giant mecha aren't generic? Ch'yeah right!

id actually say mass effect is a contender...
Now THAT's a game... and tells a great story to boot!
Yeah I agree mass effect is meant to be really good and had great reviews and even some friends say its great. But the whole outer space thing isn't my cup of tea. Not saying its bad just not my style. Nothing personal.

That's fair enough- personally I love sci-fi. I think there's too much focus on realism and gritty-ness in todays games for my liking. Something a bit more fantastic suits me just fine... I find MGS to be a wee bit... manga/anime-ish for my tastes... thing is, I used to love that stuff. Though I still would at least like to try a play through of 4... though the last one I played (MGS 2) was god awful! Um... in my opinion.
For an example of well crafted stories in games, see Planescape: Torment or Deus Ex.

The MGS series shows Kojima's inability to spin a good tale.
And I think you might be reading too much into what Cliffy said. But to be fair you spend at least half the game sitting on your bottom instead of playing.
MGS1 was among the first games to ever get my by the short and curlies I was a bit unhappy with mgs2 I admit but it was still entertaining mgs3 blew me away totally. and 4 kinda speaks for itself. I may actually try renting out mass effect when my brother gets his 360 back (4th time) although I hear pc version is better I don't have the specs to run it.

i had it for christmas and i only put the controller down to go to sleep, the story is amazing and i cant wait for the next one, i traded it in after finishing it but im going to trade another game in to get it again to have another go at it and go through the game rogue style from start to finish, i only started going rogue towards the end and thought it was well funny when he punches that woman reporter in the face lol, i reckon it would make an amazing film should hollywood get their hands on it, the game is nothing short of epic in my opinion... deffo GOTY for me in 2007....
