There's already been plenty of chatter that Call of Duty dev Infinity Ward is about to explore the sci-fi genre, but according to the latest issue of Xbox World 360 the studio's science-fiction fare is "definitely" happening.
"The net is awash with rumour mongering that Infinity Ward are beavering away on a brand new sci-fi shooter," says the mag. "However, we can confirm that it is definitely happening."
Apparently an Xbox World 360 staffer became aware of the news at a recent Call of Duty 4 event, but Activision's PR department blocked off any attempts to dig deeper. "Will it be Call of Duty 6? No idea..."
Speaking on its official website blog recently, the developer itself revealed its plans to possibly exploring new IP.
"We're excited to announce that in the recent months we have decided to reup on our contract with Activision publishing," the developer said in the post. "The recently renegotiated deal may not seem like much of an impact from the outside perspective, but it has laid the ground work and kick started our future project, as well as the possibility of a unique new IP by Infinity Ward, that we'll have complete control over.
"We're excited to be working on our next project, but it's going to be quite a while before I can share any details on exactly what that project is."
We do enjoy a bit of sci-fi at CVG - especially when it involves guns - but where Infinity Ward is concerned we'd much prefer (as the above blog post suggests) that it explores the genre alongside the usual Call of Duty plans. We're not quite ready for Call of Duty: 2142... yet.
Issue 68 of Xbox World 360, with a Fallout 3 hands-on report, hits new stands tomorrow (July 11).

What does that mean? That statement makes no sense at all.
Anyway, yay Infinity Ward! CoD4 is the first online shooter to really grip me since the original Unreal Tournament, so anything from these guys has me drooling in anticipation.
Must admit it's a shame that IW aren't doing alien colonial marines then we would be sure that it would be a decent title(hoping that it will be). Any time frame on release or new announcements on the IW project?

Personally I have far more faith in Gearbox (creators of the two official HL1 add-ons, and the Brothers in Arms series) making a decent Aliens shooter, than I would have in Infinity Ward doing the same.
For one thing, if IW were at the helm the end credits would be rolling before I even had time to blink. Hopefully with Gearbox handling things it should last a good few hours.

It means they like Sci-Fi shooters, but they would prefer it if IW kept the sci-fi game and the COD games seperate, thus no to the idea of a "COD:2142(ref. Battlefield:2142).
I reckon IW could make a top notch Sci Fi Shooter. Maybe not wanting to open a can of worms here but I also think there is still a place for the good old WW2 shooters as well.
The new COD looks great and the video I saw for the new Brothers In Arms looked friggin awesome.
If its a good game its a good game, it dosent matter where or when the game is set.
I'm fine by this, so long as it isn't the next COD. Big guns are great n all but then that usually changes the whole shape of the game, making it either too complex, or harder to relate with. It makes it less fun, for me atleast.
Im disappointed that COD 5 is going backwards. Ive had enough of WWII ( For now anyway ) Not to mention that it is being made by Treyarch, who made the awful COD3 and shallow Spiderman games.
I will reserve judgement on '5 until I play it, but I feel the next COD game I buy will be COD6, and if it happens to be set in the near future (nothing further that 2020 please), that seems the next logical step from modern warfare
It'll be good hopefully. But not CoD6 hopefully either. If a series is going in such a rapid direction, a series based on normal Wars (but with a bit of a spin I suppose) they might as well just make a new IP.
I loved the story in COD4, they should do more like it, where the story unfolds in flashback levels, taking in covert missions around the globe from the 50's-now. just because the first few games where set during WWII doesn't mean all future games need to be set during a war.

Yes, thanks, I got that bit. But the reasoning behind the original statement doesn't work. With CoD4, IW has proven they can apply their formula to any type of setting (not just WW2) - and quite brilliantly, at that - so there's no need to assume CoD + SciFi = garbage. Quite the opposite.
SciFi does not automatically imply a completely different type of gameplay, either, so there's no reason to assume a futuristic CoD would lose its "CoDness" and become CoD:2142.
(If anything, the BF series proves that you can transfer a formula from WW2 to SciFi and improve upon it - I still think BF2142 is the best of all BF games...)
Anyway, it doesn't really matter. I don't care what name IW put on the box - if they're making it, I'm playing it
