Traditional 'core' Wii gamers (or: everyone who reads this website) may have been disappointed by the particularly Mii-heavy announcements of Nintendo's E3 press conference last night, but boss Reggie Fils Aimes can't see any reason why the Nintendo hardcore should feel left out.
Speaking to G4 after the press conference, where the company unveiled Wii Sports Resort, Wii Music and Animal Crossing: City Folk, Reggie said that Animal Crossing and GTA DS should be enough to please 'core' gamers.
"How could you feel left out? The Animal Crossing that we've been hearing about that people wanted," he said. "Fully connected to the Internet, go to other people's towns. Plus as I said, Grand Theft Auto on the DS. How do you feel left out with those types of announcements?
"Make no mistake, Mr. Iwata said quite clearly: Mario teams, Zelda teams are working, they're bringing product out for Wii this generation," he added. "We're going to continue to bring all our best franchises to both of our key platforms and continue driving that experience both core as well as brand new consumers."
We were actually quite excited by some of Nintendo's 'casual' titles, but no offense Reggie; Animal Crossing was barely a core title on the GameCube, let alone with Mii masks and beauty salons. And as for GTA DS, show us more than a logo and we might have something to get excited about. Hopefully we'll get to see the Mario and Zelda teams' work soon. -
We're sure the 'core' gamers will speak for us in the comments field below.
I read this excuse yesterday. And it's a poor excuse.
GTA on the DS will never match the depth you can get on the other recent GTA games. It would be like playing GTA (the original) with motion sensing controllers. You just can't reach the depth with the DS. The DS is good for other games.
Animal Crossing I like but how has it taken them so long to basically rip the textures from the original Animal Crossing game? What has changed really, very little. And it's not hardcore, it's more casual with a small hardcore following.
Then I don't care if I know a new Zelda is "in development". Anyone could say that. At least Sony showed us something from their games way off-CGI or not. It was always obvious a new Zelda/Mario would be made. But videos, screenshots etc. or more information is needed.
I think he's missing the point. GTA is very much suited to the xbox and playstation markets. Getting a version for a nintendo console wont appeal so much to nintendos fanbase (note: core gamers not casual gamers).
I joked a few weeks ago on here that if Nintendo continued to shift the hardware they are and only sell peripheral based software then in 10 years time will Wii Fit be the standard of hardcore games?
That is a horrible, horrible scary thought.
People: Stop Buying The Wii Until Nintendo Decide To Actually Start Making Computer Games Again.
They should have announced dead rising on the wii, that'd have helped abit. Also just showing a logo for the ds gta wooo so exciting, maybe some gameplay would have been nice or gta on the wii. I was hoping for a new f-zero but i guess i'll have to wait longer for that still.
Im still pretty p**sed the BIG surprise was Wii music (which looks crap to be honest), after all this hype of a possible new Zelda, Kid Icarus etc.
Totally agree. It might appeal to Guitar Hero and Rock Band crowd but I don't think so. Don't even know how it can be considered a game.
And Reggie points out Animal Crossing and GTA. What, 1 title for each platform for f**ks sake. Seeing news about Dead Rising and Madworld gives me hope but I wish Nintendo would draw more attention to titles like this.
well, well, well. as a person who has recently sold his wii after buying the whole of 1 game last year (super mario galaxy) im totally not suprised by reggies comment. I have owned a ds and sold it as mentioned above didnt buy any games! how can he possibly say that animal crossing is for the 'hardcore' i mean its the epitamy of casual gaming that anyone can play. The nintendo that we know and love is gone and fair enough they can cater to the grandmas, grandads, mums and dads and ill stick to the xbox and ps3 thank you very much!
I can fully imagine that we will see some great games arrive for the wii this year and I am glad to hear that the Mario and Zelda teams are hard at work but unfortunately this does not make the press conference any better!
It may be that the games are just not far enough down the line yet to make any announcements but I am surprised that no Pilot wings, starfox etc made an appearence. Also if they want to please the core fanbase then do something about the storage problems, Wiiware is developing into a great service with some truly innovative games but I need to be able to store them somewhere!
If you don't get why "core gamers" are feeling left out, you really have lost your connection with the people who love nintendo for what they are. They deserve a honest answer to where the "core" games are and not a 10 second cheap press statement pretending u are giving a damn, while you release alls kinds of crap
3rd party announcements overshadowing Nintendos own software... Well if anyone was complaining about no decent 3rd party software can take a little heart.
No he seems to be on a planet all by himself where only his opinion matters. Plus are there any hardcore nintendo gamers left? Surely they must have all starved to death with lacklustre casual games being their only outlet.
I own a Wii but have no interest in buying a DS as I have no need for one. That GTA is coming to the DS means little to me when I've been playing GTA IV on my Xbox 360 for almost three months.
I thought Nintendo's presentation was massively disappointing as they seem to be catering for their new found casual gamers and not doing enough to appease their long-time 'hardcore' fanbase such as myself. With the exception of the new Animal Crossing game, which I'm still unsure of, there wasn't one other game that appealed to me. Looks like my Wii won't be seeing many new games for the rest of this year...

Most of us looked to a rival company for additional sustenance...
No offence Reggie, but you have always been a bit of a t**t.
For a while it was between Reggie and Peter Moore who was the biggest t**t in gaming but Peter seems to be less in the spotlight now so we might as well send the award to Reggie.
As a Wii owner and someone who has always championed its potential, this offering is nothing short of PATHETIC!
The Wii is a tragedy in my eyes. So much promise, so much waste.
I concur.
But despite all that the Wii continues to sell exceptionally well. I guess that's because it's more of a mainstream console for casual gamers and less one for us long-time Nintendo fans. Shame.
Of course, I'll keep my Wii for the odd Nintendo classic that comes along but compared with the N64 and even the GameCube, the Wii is proving to be a little disappointing on the games front IMO. It really saddens me to admit that too.
The problem is, why should they care? It will still sell by the bucket load to people that have no idea of Nintendo's heritage. They think that by chucking Shigeru Miyamoto up on stage and mentioning the Mario and Zelda teams are working on something, the hardcore Nintendo fanboys will be happy about the future.
The stuff they actually showed was extremely dull for people like us but it will be eaten up by the general public. They know this and thats why their focus has completely shifted. It's all about the money in business.

i know what you mean. i've owned every nintendo machine there's been and the wii must be the worst ever. the only game that gets played on it is mazza kart and even that only goes on for half an hour before it gets boring. even it seems to be a casual game now.
The Wii showing at E3 was a shambles to say the least.
I think people should be tiring of the same old Mario/Zelda/Metroid trio they always cough up.
Peeps complain about too many sequals on the exclusive filled PS3 (75 exclusives in the pipeline : more than any other console) but the fact is, Mario is on his 7th iteration, Zelda (not including handheld) 6th iteration, and Metroid 5th.
Well said mate. The Nintendo conference couldn't have been a more underwhelming experience. Why wasn't there even one hardcore game announcement? I'm sorry, but Animal Crossing is not a hardcore game, Reggie.
As I have said elsewhere, E3 is not a show for casual gamers. It's not the casual gamers who watch it online live. It's not the casual gamers who are sitting in the audience in LA. So why was there not even one big announcement for the Nintendo fans?
I think this conference could actually have been worse than the embarassing Sony conference in 2006. That bad.
No he seems to be on a planet all by himself where only his opinion matters. Plus are there any hardcore nintendo gamers left? Surely they must have all starved to death with lacklustre casual games being their only outlet.

Just face it : Gamers like you are a dying breed. The real money is in these casual party games. Nintendo doesn't give a s**te about you or your feelings. And it looks as if Microsoft are looking to go down the same path.
That leaves Sony to uphold the values of the hardcore gamer. Wouldn't it be ironic if next generation, Sony were the one's catering for the hardcore market most, Sony once the symbolism of mass market appeal.
I own a Wii but have no interest in buying a DS as I have no need for one. That GTA is coming to the DS means little to me when I've been playing GTA IV on my Xbox 360 for almost three months.

The presentation was spot on for Nintendo but it the sort of stuff they show in the ad breaks for Coronation Street or crap like that. It was E3 and I can't imagine how embarassing it must have been to watch in that audience. The 'smiling' bit at the beginning as well...

So basically, what you're saying is, there have been more GTA games in 10 years than there have been proper Mario, Zelda and Metroid games in over 20 years....

Thats why I bought myself a 360 after selling my ps2. I still have my wii, under a blanket of dust. I'll play wii sports every now and then. But everything I hoped the wii would become is not being realised by nintendo. This whole casual, simple gaming thing is swallowing them up. They are getting arrogant again with all the money they are raking in.
Animal crossing for the core fanbase my hairy asscrack!
Some new ips would be nice instead of ANOTHER mario game, or ANOTHER zelda game....

I've stuck with Nintendo through thick and thin - from the SNES through the N64 days and the GameCube days... but this is the end. I couldn't give a f**k about any of that Wii dross they're pushing at E3.
I've got Banjo-Kazooie on 360 and a load of clever little games on XBLA and PSN. I'll keep the Wii for bowling and tennis when friends come round, but I doubt I'll be buying of this 'casual' s**t any time soon.
Reggie did point out that GH3 sold more on Wii than on any other console - which was why I was hoping they'd have realised they could rake in a whole lot of moolah by releasing some sort of storage device that allows for DLC. Didn't happen. Games were announced I would be embarrassed to be seen with.
Ninty, you're now the equivalent of an ex girlfriend - I'll remember you fondly and all the good times we had, but you changed, went after older folk and didn't really understand my needs anymore.
I don't see why Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony can't appeal to both casual and 'core gamers alike so long as they release a varied selection of games across all different genres. Microsoft and Sony seem to be doing this although their machines are arguably less appealing to the casual gamer but Nintendo seem to deliberately ignoring the core fanbase in favour of their casual userbase.
OK, fine, the Wii is selling well so that makes sense but what happens if these fickle casual gamers tire of the Wii? If Nintendo alienate their older fans then they could risk losing everything if the Wii's popularity starts to decline. They really need to be supporting both groups of gamers equally IMO and that isn't the impression I got from E3 at all.
I have now had enough of Nintendo’s s**t games. Why the hell would I want to play on wii music? It looks dreadful. I’m not a fan of animal crossing and wii sports resort looks pants as well. Oh lets throw a Frisbee about.
The wii motion update is pretty cool and I’m shocked that the only game to make use of it is wii sport resort. How about red steel 2 that actually works.
Like someone else mentioned it’s the third parties that are doing the good games now. What happened to Nintendo’s cutting edge games?
And don’t go on about Mario and Zelda games on wii being great because the N64 versions where miles better.

I'm sorry, but Animal Crossing is not a "core" gamer title. It's a casual, not-quite-story-driven casual socialising simulator. It barely qualifies as a game.
And GTA on the DS is hardly revolutionary, considering it'll just be like a modded GTA3.
So we get GTA (if we happen to have a DS). Everyone else gets Wii Sports 2, Animal Crossing, Yet another RRR game and Wii Sports (which is just like a movement version of Guitar Hero). F*cking awesome.
Whilst I agree it was disappointing with regards to the lack of big first party game announcements, i.e. no Pilot Wings, Star Fox, Punch Out, Kid Icarus, F-Zero, Pikmin 3 or new Zelda announced. You can safely bet that at least 2 of these titles will be in the works (more than likely by the Mario teams/Zelda teams and Factor 5)
Don't forget the Wii is still only a year and a half into it's life span and we already have a huge Zelda game in TP (last gen port or not it is still an epic Zelda adventure), Metroid Prime 3, the true sequel to Mario 64 with the amazing Mario Galaxy, also the under-rated Super Paper Mario, an online Mario Karts, Battalion Wars 2 online, the massive Super Smash Bros Brawl, also online.
The 2 things that impressed me was 'Wii chat', finally we'll be able to communicate with our friends online. Secondly the new 'Wii MotionPlus' is an exciting prospect as we will finally be able to truly replicate movements and angels with 1:1 precision allow golf/tennis games more accuracy of direction and placement.

I hear that - why they STILL haven't announced an external HDD is beyond me

Agree completely. Still, it'd be nice to have one last fumble with it before parting ways. I'd prefer that to be Pilotwings 2*...
*Tsk, this is p**s poor of me. I meant a sequel to the N64 one, which itself was the 2nd... *hangs head*

I see the mighty N are trying to drum up even more appeal for their biggest - console launching release!
Wii Collect!
Features:
* Mass market appeal! (Suitable for old people and children < 3 yrs)
* Revolutionary new controls - every release is a new controller!
* Available in mighty Nintendo white!
Oh Nintendo, for shame... For everything you did right with the NES and SNES... The Wii has no F-Zero, Pilotwings, Starfox, Super Soccer, Super Tennis, UN Squadron or Street Fighter 2. No Donkey Kong Country, Killer Instinct, Contra, Top Gear or Smash TV. I waited to see, but now I don't care about the Wii anymore, it is now too late. Wii music? I'd rather blow my trumpet elsewhere. Microsoft is cutting into the Wii market. For shame Nintendo.
The whole show stunk but the thing that really stuck in my throat was the "Wii-motion Plus". How Nintendo have the cheek to charge us for something that should of been part of the console on the release is beyond me. Also a great idea bundling it with a game I'll never want to play. Of course I could be it seperately but that would work out more expensive just like Wii Play.
I guess at the end of the day Nintendo is just doing what any company does; make money. We may all scoff at Wii Music/Wii Sports 2 but you can bet they'll sell by the lorry load.
I just wonder what happens when the novelty wears off for the casual gamers. I can see 1 of 2 things happening; either they'll become "core gamers" (in which case they'll buy a PS3 or 360 to sate their new taste for "proper" games) or they will just get bored and leave the industry. Either way it will leave Nintendo with no customers at the end of the Wii's lifespan and Nintendo will have to win back all the people they've scared off when they move to the next generation.
Im sorry but what moron would buy gta on the ds Theyd just buy a psp and paly lcs or vcs or buy a 360 and play gta 4 - who wants to play with with the s**tty ds graphics
GOD nintendo are pathetic apart from mario they have nothing now

At last - a post from you I can completely agree with.
Animal Crossing is not a "gamers game". Not by a long shot. And wow, GTA on DS. Come back when I care, or at least when you want to actually show some in-game footage
That was the most sickly casual conference I had the displeasure to watch.
I consider myself a core Nintendo gamer.. well I was but they lost me.. there hasn't been any decent wii games since RE4 (yes really! a GC port!). It's all about the PS3 for me now. Nintendo have really lost sight.. all their games seem to be so kiddy.. I guess their new core is the mainstream audience attracted by wii play/sports. I mean come on! Animal crossing! A hardcore game... GIVE ME STRENGTH!
For god sake some people are never F***ing happy are you!? It was internet RUMOURS! that was on about pikmin 3, kid ikarus, new ds. Animal crossing and wii sports 2 is great news, the wario ware and call of duty W@W.
Stop your bloody moaning, sod off and buy a ps3 cause thats got erm... resistance 2 coming out and thats about all they released info about.

So is zebra crossing one of the sub games in Animal Crossing and do I get a flashing yellow light bulb peripheral with that?
Im disappointed. Core gamers expected a new instalment in a title which gets people excited, such as the aforementioned mario, zelda, metroid series. What we do get to see:
Wii music.. your wiimote is a musical instrument. Animal crossing.. again. theres what, 4 versions of this now? Some snowboarding plank ive never heard of. Wiisports at teh beach.
I used to wait for E3 every year with baited breath. A new game here and there would tease you with information. Youd spend days trawling the net looking for the newest leaks about it.
Ive read the nintendo roundup (if thats what you call it) and im not impressed, not excited, not even interested.
Oh and Dead rising for wii? thats nice.. i only bought it for 360 a YEAR ago.
i was excited as f**k for this, i really was expecting some surprises. the only surprise was that there was none. Don't get me wrong, i like the wiispeak and the wii motion, the latter is going to surely make games like zelda even better and the demo they showed of it with wii sports resort was very impressive as always.
I'm really glad they are hitting back at the imitators, but that doesn't impress the hardcore, i was expecting pikmin, f-zero, maybe even starfox, and all i got was music and animal crossing, 2 games which i don't give a toss about.
Also, where was day of crisis? I only saw a trailer for fatal frame and it did look class, but no gameplay as such. Also the trailer for madworld was immense, but no developer interview or gameplay walkthrough as yet.
The thing is with wii, it has glimpses of magic, all the games in my collection, e.g. Zelda, Galaxy, Prime 3, Z&W, No More Heroes, Brawl and so on, they are amazing, but the rate at which they are released leaves me no option to have a second console to work with, which is why i bought a 360 this time last year.
I simply feel that games like NMH and madworld are gems in the 3rd party world and we need more of them.
Idiots like reggie just don't have a f**king clue. The E3 was about as hardcore as a baby in a nappy. get it sorted and realise that little mentions of new games are about as exhilerating as poking your own s**te.

Oooooo..... Listen to Mr 'That's not Banjo Kazooie, Kazooie doesn't even have any moves'...

Well, that's an out and out lie. Any fool with internet access can see the wealth of great titles the Wii has to offer, in fact...
This probably won't make a scrap of difference to the ignorant .
Nintendo's conference this year was terrible for the core gamer, it just smacks of poor effort.

Kid Icarus - we'll wait til we've seen proof of it, Pikmin 3...average game, certainly no AAA, new ds - if it is the same spec you can sod off, that isn't news, warioware, looks like a decent game, no better than the better WiiWare, XBL, PSN titles, call of duty - a port with waggle controls, who cares?
Seriously, even through your Nintendo-tinted glasses you can't deny that was one CRAP presentation.
And please don't say Wii Sports 2 is a good thing. You shouldn't be on these boards if you think that...

That list of games looks very good with my eyes shut.
Too bad that reading it reveals classic games like 'The Golden Compass', 'Happy Feet' and 'Pirates - World End'.
That has really put me off the Wii. I mean Animal Crossing is hardly a hardcore experience is it? And knowing Nintendo they'll probably dumb it down for the 'casual' market. I mean, for god's sake, why can't casual gamers just learn to play games?
If anything the DS looks like the place to be this year, with Spore Creatures, Guitar hero On Tour: Decades and GTA all coming for the handheld, and all looking like more hardcore experiences than anything we saw unveiled for the Wii.
I thought the conference was a disaster especially after all that was promised. I was expecting Nintendo to come all and reveal all it's big titles for the end of year because I personally thought the 360 and PS3 line-ups were slim, so Nintendo had the chance to stamp there authority on the market further. However they totally failed in doing that. I thought last year's conference was bad, luckily though there was Metroid, Zelda and Mario. This year, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Not even a revival for Kid Icarus, F-Zero, Pikmin or Star Fox.
My view on Wii Music totally changed after the conference. Having been looking forward to that title ever since Miyamoto demoed it at E3 2006 by conducting an orchestra, this time they blew it. The demo seemed like an absolute shambles to me. And as one person put it, "It looks bizarre and silly, as if your playing an instrument drunk".
Animal Crossing Wii? Well having loathed the DS version and me thinking it's one of the most over-rated games EVER. My mind still hasn't changed after seeing the Wii version. Looked the same as the DS version and I imagine that'll be dumbed down so non-gamers can play it. And since when was Animal Crossing a 'hardcore gamer' title? I hate the series, it seems to be aimed at kids.
Wii Sports 2. It was inevitable a sequel was coming. However it doesn't really wet my appetite, especially as we'll have to wait until next spring to get it.
Overall, the conference lacked any 'Nintendo magic' either. You always get the odd surprise with Nintendo every year, this year there was nothing.
And its a good job Iwata claimed that Nintendo's internal team's are busy at work, because, boy after seeing that mess yesterday Nintendo need to reaffirm it's commitment in giving the 'core' gamer what it wants. Nintendo are playing a risky game by increasingly relying on non-gamers to buy their products. There's a good chance they'll just lose interest and then when that happens they'll be trying to get there customers who made the company what it is today back, by which time they'll probably be playing on a PS3 or 360.
That list of games looks very good with my eyes shut.
Too bad that reading it reveals classic games like 'The Golden Compass', 'Happy Feet' and 'Pirates - World End'.
That point would make sense if those games weren't also available on the PS3.
Which 2 of them are...
I know, ridiculous isn't it.
It would help if LordVon (is that an Escaflowne reference?) and all the other 'all knowing' gamers started reading at the top of the list.
Still, I'd rather play Happy Feet than Lair if I was able to choose the method of torture.
You mean that list has a top?
Zelda, Galaxy and M.Kart are the only games on Wii that interest me. Wii Sports at a push - mainly because I'd prefer proper dedicated sports titles as opposed to a game pack.
As an active person who enjoys running, swimming, cycling, tennis and golf - the whole idea of "Wii Fit" seems like a bad joke. A bad joke intended for fat little children trying to convince their parents that it will in some way help them (a bit like kids used to say buying a ZX Spectrum would help with the homework).
Doesn't look like there's anything coming out on Wii to get psyched up about, or maybe I'm the only one who thought Nintendo's E3 sucked ass.
What happened to the ass kicking, name taking Reggie fro E3 2004? The one that showed us the DS and first glimpse of Twilight Princess? This year's Nintendo conference was laughable.
Seriously, they announced almost as many peripherals as they did actual GAMES. We don't want a huge pile of garbage plastic boards and microphones that are used with one or two games, we want a library of good quality Nintendo games, like we had on the N64.
To quote someone from the ONM forums "Cammie Dunaway is the face of video game oppression."
I seriously hope that lightning strikes a car with Reggie, Iwata and Miyamoto in it, fixing their brains.
Hold on... Wii Sports 2 isn't out until SPRING!? What the feck is Ninty's army of coders actually doing? My God, it's not like they have to build and paint an entire planet like with Gears of War or something... a couple of Miis and a bit of sand/grass and a stand full of unrealistic spectators - job done.

Lame. Lame. Lame.
It's like a bad joke isn't it:
"Q. How long does it take a team of Nintendo coders to complete the latest iteration of a terribly shallow collection of mini games?
A. 10 Months - 2 weeks to make it, the remaining 9 months 2 weeks to spend congratulating themselves, perfecting their 'smug' look and telling the world that they have opened the world of gaming to non-gamers"
"Q. How long does it take Nintendo to come up with the next Wii activity (WiiSports, WiiMusic etc..) game? A. 4 minutes"
"Q. What will the lifespan of the Wii be?
A. Add the lifespan of the following together:
Tamagotchi Yo-yos Shoes with roller skate wheels on them LA Gear trainers Bomber/Puffer jackets Mr Frosty (slush puppy makers)
Divide by 6."

wow ninty you revealed so much! (yes that was sarcastic)
The big reveals: Wii sports 2 and Wii music... looks like i'll be saving some money then when there are no decent games to buy
im sorry ninty but im really not impressed... casual games are fine but animal crossing does not count as core game! no no no bad nintendo! bad nintendo for ignoring core gamers!
I honestly cannot understand all the negativity surrounding this press conference! Would it have made any difference if Reg or Iwata had stood on that stage and reeled off a list of titles like - Mad world, Fatal Frame 4, Monster Hunter 3, Tenchu 4, COD 5, Fragile, Dead Rising, Force Unleashed, The Conduit - All 'real' games and due out within the year.
It is enough for me to know that both the Mario and Zelda teams are at work on substantial projects. It takes over a year to develop a usual Zelda update - and let's not forget that, after Twilight Princess, Nintendo promised a reinvention and revamp of the franchise. Just let them get on with it! The Mario and Zelda teams do 'NOT' make mini-game collections and I'll eat my hat if proved otherwise.
Unlike Sony and Microsoft, Nintendo have never been into the habit of showing off pre-rendered trailers for games in early stages of development. That is not to suggest they don't exist.
Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but I always thought that the term 'hardcore gamer' referred to someone who had been into the hobby for years and was willing and eager to buy, try and master any type and style of game, regardless of genre. Not someone who's sole gaming diet consisted of po-faced, semi-serious gore-fest shooters, online death-matches and 15 minute cutscenes. How times have changed!
I'm as much looking forward to the new iteration of Animal Crossing and MySims Kingdom as I am Dead Rising. It's all about variety guys.
I honestly cannot understand all the negativity surrounding this press conference!
I agree with what you say about the variety aspect, but the negativity around the press conference is fuelled by Reggie setting up the revelation of a game that core gamers will want to have at E3 this year.
I like variety too, and will probably get Wii Music and Wii Sports 2 - but I am still very disappointed that Animal Crossing turned out to be the game for core gamers!
Nintendo need to publish High Voltage's "The Conduit" to make up for their shambles!
Sad f**ker that I am, I actually emailed Nintendo after E3 asking them what the hell was going on. Why can't they develop casual and hardcore (I hate that phrase though, never considered myself one before, but looks like I might be) games in tandem. They could have alluded to something more than Zelda and Mario teams are busy - we will have more info later in the year or something like that, just to give some hope to long term Nintendo fans. When have Nintendo released more than one full scale Mario game per generation?
The attach rates for the wii aren't great. I think it had a great first 14 months, but we've got nothing to look forward too. They are thinking very short term in my opinion.
"Even Nintendo employees could not have imagined that five years later the market respond so quickly that we could sell millions of bathroom scales around the world". No s**t Reggie.
And Iwata's comments about games having greater than two year life spans says alot too. If I was to buy a wii today - I'd be happy for quite some time with the list of games already out there. However I got one at launch and I've pretty much exhausted all my games apart from multiplayer MK and PES. It's like they're expecting every wii owner to buy the same six to ten games and that will do them fine.
This might seem OTT, but unless they sort it out this could be phase one of the three console cycle again. The next nintendo console will sell like hotcakes to the general public on the back of the wii, then after that the public will be sick of all the bulls**t. Or maybe they've changed gaming forever with all this non-game gaming nonsense as they gradually marginalise old school gamers.
I've defended Nintendo for years, I haven't got many more arguments left though.

Nintendo are not changing the face of gaming. They are very successfully reverting it back to what it used to be - something fun and accessible that anyone can have a go at. I'm all for that.
I consider myself a core gamer, but don't feel as though my position is threatened in least. There is room enough for everyone, but if you've 'gone off' Nintendo, go and buy a PS3 or something. Sony need all the help they can get.
Thank you Reggie for reassuring me I have nothing to worry about! After all, your company has only taken away the games I used to love, and replaced them with lifestyle simulators and shovelware puzzle games!
I can't believe I didn't realise that Animal Crossing was designed for me, a core gamer, and that I should be content with that and with GTA DS!
Don't worry Reggie, no-one will realise the irony of the fact that the worst Nintendo console ever will probably sell the most of this generation.
I'd just like to say Reggie, I traded in my Wii months ago and that I'll be sticking to my Xbox after this E3 showing.

Financially successfully, no doubt. I have no problem with casual games if they give some 'regular' games too. I've probably played wii sports more than anything, wario ware was great, monkey ball etc.
But would like a few more fps's and just a few deeper games in general. My 360 is great, but would love more Nintendo magic!
I came away from the press conference full of disapointment. It was so bad it made Sony's look outstanding, and that took some doing... To sum it up, Nintendo have sold out it's loyal fanbase and instead is focusing on making as much money as possible from their new found audience. This means rubbish party games and as many add-on's as they can think of. Then they also try to pass of Animal Crossing as being a game for 'core' gamers. I enjoyed my Wii for the first few months but now it;s just collecting dust and brought out once in a while for the odd drunken game on Wii Sports.

I don't see Animal Crossing as a casual game. I have put literally tens of hours into previous iterations and have had as much fun and life out of them as anything more serious you'd care to mention.
Just because a game is laid-back and relaxing, it doesn't mean that it isn't a real and viable piece of software

And I've put in hours on Rock Band, Wii Fit, Wii Sports, but no one would ever convince me these aren't casual titles.

I never said Animal Crossing wasn't viable, but it is NOT a 'hardcore' game, not even close. How you can think otherwise is completely baffling to me. That said, Reggie clearly feels the same, so maybe it's me that's wrong in this instance.
Oooooo..... Listen to Mr 'That's not Banjo Kazooie, Kazooie doesn't even have any moves'...
Yeah, that's right, I went there.
Oh God it's not you again Marty you little P***k .. sick of seeing your replys

Dead rising is capcoms wii project? Starfox wii rumours? Any sniff of 1:1 lightsabring? No wait- this is more a 'mans speed' SLASHING A PENCIL! (the emotiocons have in fact had a nervous break down)

I've personally never understood this idiotic and new-found concept of being 'hardcore'. The term certainly never came up when we were all playing on our SNES and Megadrives and suddenly, anyone who feels that their beloved hobby is being threatened is a hardcore games fanatic.
So, do you want to tell me what you'd consider to be a 'hardcore' gaming experience, because to me it means something that you are able to put a lot of time and effort into, and in return, get a lot of enjoyment out of.
Admittedly, that probably doesn't apply to Wii sports and certainly not a mini-game collection, but it does apply to Animal Crossing.
Unfortunately (from my point of view), too many gamers nowadays assume that hardcore gaming means guns, gore, complicated controls, online cliques and anything with pretentious, poorly written cutscenes.
Doesn't hardcore mean tougher games like Far Cry 2 and all that? If so, Nintendo really didn't deliver anything hardcore except GTA DS, even though that might just be a copy of GTA IV in itself.
Now I don't own a Wii, I just felt like giving you confused people out there the definition of hardcore (that wasn't name-calling, I was just referring to the people out there confused about the definition of hardcore). It doesn't mean something you get a whole lot of enjoyment out of, it means something that's rated M. At least that's how I interpret it.
Hopefully for you Wii and DS people out there Nintendo has a few more surprising games up its sleeve in this E3, otherwise I think they'll lose over half of their hardcore fanbase by the end of it.
P.S. If anything here sounds like it's making fun of any kind of Nintendo console or game, it wasn't meant to.

Well, what you're doing here is avoiding the main issue here (the way Nintendo shunned its loyal fan base in favour of the shallow casual gamers).
It's a question of semantics. Personally, I don't like the term hardcore gamer (to me it signifies 1337 speak and other such characteristics in gamers that really wind me up) but it has taken on a term now as in 'everything Nintendo are not'.
So basically, when I personally refer to hardcore, it really means 'non-casual'. And hardcore has been around since Pong. Since the first video game with a score counter.
Don't get me wrong - Casual games are fine in small doses - I enjoy Singstar. I'm not trying to enforce a dictatorship ruling what kind of games are allowed on what consoles, but to have a whole platform devoted to casual games is terrible.
To me, casual games are essentially non-traditional pick up and play games at their best, and at their worst, pretty much don't resemble games (brain training sims, cookbooks on DS etc... ), or are a collection of minigames that have been done before.
What's worse is that companies have worked out how cheap they are to make for the return they acheive.
The bubble will burst. And I hope Nintendo return to their pre-N64 days

No, that's just plain wrong. I'll admit that 'hardcore' might have a few interpretations, but a game being difficult isn't one of them.
I find the golf bit on Wii sports extremely hard, as do many others I know. That doesn't make it hardcore.
It's also not something with an M rating either. In fact the vast majority of games with blood and guts could quite easily be classed as immature. Some would say like it's audience. I personally love a bit of blood and guts, anything at the other end of the spectrum and anything in between.
I can't be bothered listing them again here, but by your definations, there are at least 10 really promising looking games in development for Wii that could be described as 'hardcore'.

I'm with you man. I don't dig on the term 'hardcore game/gamer' either, but it's suitable term to mean 'non-casual' from my perspective, and until such time as a more appropriate term comes along, it's the one I'll be using.
And I really do believe that it takes a seriously blinkered chap to claim that Nintendo are still catering to the 'hardcore gamers' to any degree. I will say I'm a huge Nintendo fan - ever since I traded in my Master System and got a SNES, I've stuck by them through the highs and the lows (and there's been plenty of both ), so it's not like I'm trying to incite some kind of hate campaign.
It would, however, be nice for Ninty to take a step back, and say 'right, that's the 'casual' gamer taken care of, now here's the suitcase full of hardcore games for you guys to enjoy to'.
As mentioned before elsewhere, thank the maker that 3rd party devs are filling that void.

I'm not stupid. I know the term 'hardcore' is as old as the hills, but its definition has been completely changed by those who feel their hobby is being threatened. It used to mean someone who would take a lot of time and effort to perfect a game and get the most out of it. That statement could just as easily apply to a forty-odd year old woman going on Wii Fit every day of the week. Just as it applies to myself and Animal Crossing.
You are correct, many smaller companies churn out poor imitations of Wii sports and other mini-games to cash in, but couldn't the same be said for all the cheap, rip-off shovelware that plagued the PS1 and PS2? To me, it's exactly the same - poor software that isn't worth playing.
I'm one of the very loyal Nintendo fanbase you speak of. I do not feel betrayed in any way, shape or form. It was one press conference. They happened not to tell us what the Mario and Zelda teams were up to. I say to you now, if they have been putting their hand to a mini-game compendium (although I wouldn't say no to Hyrule Olympics) I will walk away from Nintendo and never return. I don't believe this to be the case. They are at work on substantial projects and a lot of you out there will be fat from eating your own words when they reveal what projects these are.
Seems to me that gamers out there would love the Wii and all it stands for, providing it was the least successful of the three consoles. Thing is, it's unexpectedly out there in first place and everyone's suddenly up in arms. Nintendo are seemingly panned for coming last and now panned for coming first.
You have a choice. You are not forced to buy or play the Wii and its software.
What do you mean, return to their pre N64 days? In a couple of months time a brand new Wario Land game is released. About as old school and 'SNES' as any modern game is likely to get.
This reminds me of that infamous Xmas when he said retailers had "a lot to celebrate", and all they had was Mario Party 3.
I love Nintendo, but where's another Paper Mario? How about some VC games? Super Mario RPG, Super Mario Kart, Star Wing (and the previously unreleased sequel), Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island. How about downloadable Game Boy games via Wii that can be played on the DS?
The possibilities are endless, yet they have missed a valuable opportunity. It'll take more than this to make me dislike Nintendo (I am part fanboy to an extent, but am aware of their short comings), but they need to be careful not to alienate real gamers, as they don't have the same sort of games as PS3 and 360 (let's face it, a Wii GTA game would have been bigger news, and was what I was hoping for. But let's wait and se what Rockstar have up their sleeves. Though we all know it can't better GTA:VCS on PSP. And after GTAIV, will it just feel like another step backwards? Very likely).

D-, Reggie. Must try harder.
I pretty much agree with everything you're saying. I'm not so blinded by 'Ninty love' to admit that it was a huge missed opportunity to let people know of secretive in-house projects and 'big-up' some really promising third party software such as Dead Rising and Fatal Frame 4.
Unlike many others though, I still have faith that what we all regard as 'proper games' are in production. They should have told us. They didn't. Big deal.
I've been with Nintendo long enough to know that you cannot second-guess or even sometimes understand some of their decisions, but somewhere along the line, they always deliver 'big-time'. Galaxy anyone?
I've still yet to understand why they never found it in their hearts to give Professor Layton and the Curious Village a European release. Thank God for importing!
Since when has The Sims-alike Animal Crossing become a hardcore game - I must not have got the memo. I think one of the reasons the hardcore are so disappointed is that not a single 'hardcore' DS game was announced, and that showing us a game logo or stating a game is in development with no clear timeframe or information, doesnt really mean much. We've become sceptics since Too Human was confirmed as a Gamecube launch title, and since Iwata told us that Smash Bros Wii (now Brawl) was in development for launch, when at the time it hadn't yet even been greenlit. Or what about when we were told how the Wii would redefine the FPS genre... I love my Wii, own more games for it than I do my 360, but need something more to really get excited...
All nintendo did that was of interest was introduce the wiimotion plus which was just a rip off of sony's sixaxis. And they should stop acting like nintendo give the best games and innovate all they have done so far is give games which feel like the wii controls are tacked on with the exception of wii sports. I know because i have a wii and guess how many times i've played it in the past year? About twice, excluding smash bros, and i haven't updated in that time either and my friend has been and guess what the difference between his wii and my wii are? nothing. because nintendo pretend do update when all they do is find ways to break mods . But at least i have a real games console in the ps3 and I can play the awesome looking littlebigplanet which will be a revolution unlike the wii, which changed it's name when they realised just how p**s poor and unrevolutionary it would be.
Seems to me that gamers out there would love the Wii and all it stands for, providing it was the least successful of the three consoles.
Now this I do agree with.
It REALLY makes me think about the next generation too. That one will be the most interested bar none. Will Nintendo continue along the path of 'underpowered' yet unique? Will the other two as well? Interesting.
this year was REALLY dissapointing. i was expecting a new zelda, pikmin, star fox, f-zero. but no. i got wii music and gta ds. woot. I will admit that animal crossing looks pretty good, but only becos wen i bought my wii and to this day i still believe that miis + online = awesumness. i was hoping for AC city folk to be a sort of mmo. Reggie is the worst nintendo present in history of nintendo. He wants his games to appeal o non-gamers. NON-GAMERS! NON = NO AND GAMERS = GAMERS! they dont play games! reggie livs in his own little world. When he was asked about if mother 3 was coming to america (or Australia) he said "no, I dont like that game". probably why it is one of the most beloved gba games in jpn. IWANTMOTHER3!!!!! reggie on behalf of all ur nintendo fans (that ones that actual no wat nintendo r capable of) please get ur self fired so we can get a good POA that knows wat a GAME is.
No offence Reggie, but you have always been a bit of a t**t.
For a while it was between Reggie and Peter Moore who was the biggest t**t in gaming but Peter seems to be less in the spotlight now so we might as well send the award to Reggie.
With Phil Harrison and Krazy Ken they were like the four horsemen of the apocolyspe.
Zelda, Mario, Pikmin etc. They may be in production, but if they're not ready to show they won't be released this year. What the hell is there to buy on Wii this year?! Conduit is about the only must have, and we still don't know if that's even any good.
Unlike many others though, I still have faith that what we all regard as 'proper games' are in production. They should have told us. They didn't. Big deal.
When Microsoft reveal Final Fantasy 13 among others and Sony reveal (in sorts) God Of War 3, then yeah, it is a big deal that all Nintendo have to offer is stuff that is, for better use of the term, casual sh*t. But to iterate that, I'm not saying all casual is sh*t. Just what they showed us was diabolical.
Unlike many others though, I still have faith that what we all regard as 'proper games' are in production.
Yes. Zelda, Mario.. etc etc etc. Nintendo milk their franchises.
They should have told us. They didn't. Big deal.
It is a big deal.
Much like MS' reveal of Final Fantasy, people can decide whether or not to buy.
I know people who bought/will buy a PS3 for FF. Now it is going to be on 360, they're not so sure.
If Zelda was revealed, then I would have bought a Wii much sooner, but I doubt I will be bothered to spend Ł200 on something for the odd game.
I'd trade your eyes in pal, cos you are in a minority about this subject.
So, on the one hand, you would have bought a Wii much sooner for a Zelda game, and presumably a new iteration of another big 'real game' in-house title, and yet on the other hand you accuse Nintendo of milking their franchises. What exactly do you want?
Of course, Square/Enix never milk their franchises do they, being on the XIII Final Fantasy. All the major developers with successful franchises, milk them to death. The difference being that Nintendo get criticised for doing so.
If you have read the latest news, you'll see that Miyamoto has stated that the Mario team are at work on a brand new Pikmin game. Before you come back at me with a 'big deal', any core Nintendo fan will tell you that the Pikmin games are one of the very best new Nintendo franchises of recent years. Great games and great news.
He also said elsewhere, that the Zelda team was hard at work and that the Zelda team only make Zelda games. Read into that what you will. Expect a reinvention, possibly using the new 1:1 movement add-on?
Nintendo could quite easily have put up a pre-rendered trailer for both Pikmin and Zelda and everyone would have been whooping with joy. Let's face it, all Microsoft did, in terms of big surprises, was show pre-rendered film footage of an unexclusive game, showing nothing of in-game gameplay and telling nothing of release dates. Nintendo generally don't do that and never have. Why should you be so surprised now?
Also, if you'd read my posts properly, you'd see that I did say that, I agree, Nintendo should have gave some info on secret projects. It was a missed opportunity. The only difference between you and I is that I still believe that real 'gamers games' are in production. Come back at Christmas and if there is nothing on the horizon but in-house produced mini-game compediums, I'll hold my hands up, admit I was wrong and walk away.
By the way, I'm not going to start writing lists again, I can't be bothered, but you know as well as I that the Wii has far more than the 'odd' decent title you speak of. Some of the most enjoyable 'real games' this year have been released on Wii. I also own a PS3 and bar MGS4, there has been very little worth shouting about. Couple existing titles with at least 10 really promising upcoming third-party developed games. There'll be more than enough for 'real gamers'. If you didn't buy and experience the likes of No More Heroes, you have no cause to complain.
I might be in a minority here, but that doesn't mean I'm blind or deluded. Just that I have a bit more patience than you and faith that 'proper' games are on the way.
Wow, I was going to post some stuff; but why, when carterlink has already summed everything up perfectly already?
That said, I am still very dissapointed with Nintendo. I can also understand people finally throwing in the towel. Nintendo are taking too much forgranted; especially that there are ramifications for widespread anger from the internet. Look at Sony; the negativity surrounding the launch of the PS3 has definitely done quite a degree of damage, and now Nintendo are quickly replacing Sony as being the stubborn company who aren't listening to gamers, complacent with the fact that they're first, feeling like they cannot do anything wrong.
Although it is true that Nintendo's press conference was aimed at the very target audience who wouldn't even know there was a Nintendo press conference, by the same token, E3 is a media event first and foremost.
Mainstream media journalists (game specific journalists aside) such as reporters for television news, current affairs and newspapers would be able to make broadcasts or articles about what was shown. So I'd say Nintendo's press conference was aimed more at getting television or newspaper coverage which the average person will see.
It makes sense in one respect, because Nintendo fans learn of game releases through IGN and other gamer sources all throughout the year, whilst Nintendo update the media and public once a year on what they're offering for casuals. Yes, it's a weak defence of the lack of hardcore games, but it's one I think is plausible...
At the end of the day, Nintendo better damn well know what they're doing, because people were already restless with this new 'family friendly' approach, and E3 ironically emphasised worries rather than abate them - which is what many were expecting E3 to do.
Right now; there's an incredibly imbalance of casual games announced vs. regular games (or 'hardcore' if you want to add confusion) and Animal Crossing is not 'hardcore' in my books .
Square Enix DO NOT milk their franchises. How can you possibly say that? The only slightly lengthened out FF to date is FFVII but that is made up for by Crisis Core being one of the best PSP games ever and FFVII being such an incredibly epic game they are excused. So they use they name Final Fantasy each time, so what? They have only ever made 1 direct sequel. Ever. And all these spinoffs are actually good games (apart from Dirge of Cerberus), FF Tactics was a quality game.
Sorry, rant over, I'm just in a very FF mood recently having finally got me a copy of FFVII on PS1, my old one went missing years ago.
It's not even worth commenting on Nintendo's attitude right now...

What fun. And doing chores/errands/work. But it's worth it, because I can furnish a house. Sure, all I can do is place furniture, and sometimes press A to interact with it, which results in a small animation being played. I can even send letters to the characters and they send me generic and often irrelevant letters back).
Agreements all round, bar the end bit about Animal Crossing, but that is just a matter of preference.
I wasn't trying to imply that I thought Animal Crossing was a 'hardcore' experience, but more elude to the fact that it cannot be strictly referred to as a casual title (in the Wii Sports sense of the phrase). I believe with Animal crossing, that there is enough depth and scope there (providing you enjoy the process of customization and collection) to please and entertain the 'core' gamer.
I don't know, maybe it's just the creative side of my gaming tastes coming out, but I really enjoy playing about with manageable, interactive virtual worlds. That's why I'm really looking forward to Sim City Creator. Like I said, it's just preference I suppose, but for me at least, it isn't casual.

If that's the case, then neither do Nintendo. Every Zelda title brings in new ideas, new concepts and gameplay hooks, new multiple use items, new characters, completely new storylines, new settings.
The vibrant, cartoon world of Wind Waker is as far removed from the dark, gothic storyline of Majora's Mask as you could possibly get. It bears no comparison. Only Twilight Princess has shown anything like repetition, and that game was more of an homage to Ocarina.
Don't get me wrong, I love the Final Fantasy games, but tell me, why is it seemingly only Nintendo that milk franchises? Call of Duty 5. Devil May Cry 4. Ridge Racer 7. Resident Evil 5. Tekken 5. Soul Calibre 4. I could quite literally go on and on.
Of course Square milk their franchises. I don't blame them for it. It is good business to do so. People are much more likely to buy something called Final Fantasy Tactics, than they are something called Generic Goblins and Wizards Tactics.
Apart from Super Mario Galaxy (which is sublime) i've been really disappointed with the Wii. The Gamecube was occasionally mocked for featuring updates of N64 games but at least there was the graphical leap between those two consoles. Sure the Wii has more detailed graphics but the detail looks really messy on such a low definition system. 480i resolution, there were PS1 games with a 640 resolution for christ's sake!
Asking a supposedly rhetorical question like "How could core gamers feel left out?" is definitely a bad idea when 150 people want to shout at him. Likewise, resorts slick controls did raise my eyelids but it's not quite the intriguing title I was looking for. Namely, I can see all there is to seee just from his demonstration. Where's the water cooler games?
I don't understand how people get so passionate about a company that is doing what it has always done...make money.
They made money from hardcore gamers because they played games. Hardcore gamers started playing other platforms and buying R4's. No more money = new target audience.
Now they make 4 hardcore games per year and make a small amount of profit and make 20 casual games and make a huge profit.
Do what I did and move on to the platforms where hardcore gamers are catered for.
I was concerned about how horrid the E3 presentation was. As it was said elsewhere, apparently Nintendo's intended audience for the event was an audience that didn't even know it was happening.
Now I'm much more concerned that at the helm of Nintendo US, Reggie Fils Aimes doesn't know why gamers feel left out. Taking clueless to a whole new level.
Do what I did and move on to the platforms where hardcore gamers are catered for.
And get virtually nothing but shooters? no ta. It's pretty obvious nintendo have a host of ideas I just wish they'd be less secretive about them...mind you 360 avatars certainly demonstrate the futility of software patents over just hiding.
