Sega: 'No plans for Shenmue III'

SoA president refutes sequel plans
Sega of America president Simon Jeffery has shot down fan hopes that the studio is working on a third Shenmue game.

"There are no plans for [Shenmue III] right now," Jeffery told Kotaku at E3 today. At least he didn't say there's not a chance, ever.

Before E3, rumours had suggested that Sega was bringing Shenmue I & II to Wii, sparking debate whether a sequel would be seen if sales proved to be successful.

So far, we haven't heard anything official from either Sega or Nintendo on the matter.

BOO!!! Crying or Very sad
Sega could always try doing it as downloadable episodic content, don't know if that would bring the development cost down.

Hell Sega we want the third installment please come on there has to be a huge following for this game, release it on the wii if your worried about sales its bound to sell s**t loads on that(as long as you include a dodgy wiimote addon lol) oh well time to set up the dreamcast again and dust of my copys of shenmue 1 and 2 (i still find driving the forklift truck one of the most addictive things to do in any game)

Sega... You are dead to me.

Except Mad World, which looks kinda cool. Smile
_Marty_ on 17 Jul '08
Just give us Shenmue III!
Do something right and we all might forgive you for the last few Sonic game Razz

As a huge shenmue fan having played both on dreamcast i would like nothing more than to see ryu make it out of that cave and avenge his father. However the reason there is no third game (as we all know) is the huge development costs associated with the shenmue series and the worry (for sega) that it wouldnt sell. Now if the ps2 with its over 100million install base isnt seen as a viable platform for it to sell enough and turn a profit then how could any current gen console possibly be a consideration as the wii, ps3 and 360 combined dont have that many possible/potential buyers and add to that if it were to be ps3/360 with long development cycles and huge costs for such big games then it would surely never be considered financially viable and unfortunately i think the wii is to 'casual' for this game to be honest! but you never know, we can hope!!!

Absolutely right "topcat"...apparently Shenmue3 did cost a small fortune to develop and did very badly at retail which has obviously burned Sega.

The only way I can see the third installment getting made would be if Bill would be willing to stump up a large percentage of the dev fees, which if he is looking to gain some ground and kudos in Japan might not be as daft as it sounds!

Shenmue 2 was released during the death knells of the Dreamcast - in fact, I think it was the last game I bought. I'm also not sure if it even came out in the US (until the Xbox version that is).
Sega shouldn't blame the game, they should blame the platforms untimely death...

*BIG sigh*
_Marty_ on 17 Jul '08
Youd think SEGA would be more enthusiastic about it, current games are all generic rip-offs of each other or sequels. Shenmue is an excellent original game, wich is exactly what we need right now.

True, but the Xbox version of Shenmue 2 also "died" at retail, so I can see Sega's reluctance to finance a third episode off their own back.

Aye, but I can see there being a few reasons for that.
First, who would want to watch that 'movie' of the first game... What a snore-fest. Second, Shenmue II would mainly (and by mainly, I mean 99%) be bought by people who had played the first game. However, not everyone who had a Dreamcast moved across to Xbox.

Why they brought it to that system and not the PS3, or hell, even the Gamecube, is beyond me. Both of those formats would have been better for it IMO.
_Marty_ on 17 Jul '08
FFS SEGA,no more Sonic spin offs.Give the fans what they want.Your not making the dreamcast anymore, didnt you stop making that to make "GAMES",jesus christ. Twisted Evil

You could be right and although I'd love to see another episode, I know I wouldn't invest $40-Ł50 million dollars of my company' money on such a risky project.

PLEASE SEGA! PLEASE!!!!!! I WANT A SHENMUE III, SONIC ADVENTURE 3, JET SET RADIO 2, CRAZY TAXI 4.......AND WHILE YOURE AT IT A SEQUEL TO THE DREAMCAST PLEASE!!!!!

Everyone should know Sega don't release decent games anymore. They are dead in my eyes.
vulcanraven01 on 17 Jul '08
There's a reason why it never came out on PS2 was because of technical limiations, I read it all a few years back, something about no texture compression (un) in real time on PS2, something like that, and it would have to be totally rewritten which was out of the question...now though a Wii or PS3 conversion wouldnt be out of the question, i suppose Sega are on a more tight budget than they used to be, quick ports don't bother me for the first two, as long as they lead to 3 being released a couple of years down the line, a lot of work on 3 has been done apprently, though obviously as the years pass the graphics will need upping as each platform passes by.....please Sega let it snow as i walk down to the shops to visit my imaginally girlfriend and play outrun before kung-fu'ing some drunk on the street corner!
jaycee900 on 17 Jul '08
If Sony were to get Shenmue 3 on PS3 exclusively...

Ha-ha. Wow. Now that's what I'd call putting Square Enix in their place... I suppose PS3 owners will have to make do with Sega's exclusive 'Valkyria Chronicles' until that time.

I think I'll be getting on Sony's case about this one, seeing as Sega don't have the money.
LordVonPS3 on 17 Jul '08
Hardly the shock of the century that eh!

Buggers. There's such demand for it aswell. Re-release the old games via XBLA or on the Wii, wait sixth months and then release Shenmue 3. Guaranteed money.

Best idea I've heard for a long time. As for releasing it on the Wii, I'm really not sure it would sell all that well. Most of the 50 mil odd people that own one seem far more interested in buying pointless crap.

Stupid tossers. Mad

They dont realise how much of a fanbase this game has.

Another stupid decision by SEGA, thus showing us why they went down the s**tter years ago. Crying or Very sad

Apparently it coulndt be done on the PS2 due to lack of VRAM when compared with the Dreamcast.

Sega are idiots, they release endless crap whilst ignoring the best franchise they have. Yes it lost money, but this one wouldnt necessarily. Theyd be guaranteed at least half a million sales with no marketing, more if they pushed it.

To save money they could just use the Yakuza 3 engine, instead of developing a specific one. Shenmue was by far the best looking game of the time, but they dont need that this time as they are not showing off their own console. It would still look good anyway with the Yakuza engine.

If this isnt released on this gen of consoles - PS3 or 360, not wii tho, then Sega can f*** off as far as im concerned.
Ryo_Hazuki4 on 17 Jul '08
I only want shenmue III if Yu suzuki makes it. Come'on Yu, give it to us. You know you want to finish Ryo's epic adventure.
King_Elshout on 17 Jul '08
aww man... I am so disappointed right now. Wtf is wrong with them? Can't they see the demand for it?
spacelion on 17 Jul '08
I WILL NEVER GIVE UP HOPE! Games have come back after 10 years or so before. Look at Banjo coming back. Metroid was away for a long time before that on the Cube. Prince Of Persia. I can't wait for the day i pick Shenmue 3 off the shelf (or order online but that didn't seem so dramatic! Laughing ). It will be a truly great day. Until then, i keep the hope alive.

PLEASE MAKE SHENMUE 3! LOOK AT THE DEMAND FOR IT FOR GOD SAKE!
gbenlcfc on 18 Jul '08
Do they honestly think people would rather play a game feature a sworld weilding Sonic than complete the saga of Shen Mue?

t**ts.
