Wii Music has no score, no aim and so no game over screen. There's no winning or losing. Just music. But that is exactly why it's "better than a video game", according to Shigeru Miyamoto.
If you dared suggest Wii Music would be better deemed a musical toy than a videogame, the legendary Nintendo producer would straight up agree. "Yes, that's right, and that's why it's better than a video game," he said at a recent Nintendo developer roundtable.
It could be a great educational tool, too, he went on to explain. "I really think that half of an elementary music school could be dedicated to this.
"I'm hoping that through Wii Music, we'll get more drummers, more musicians and more people interested in music," he said, according to Kotaku.

Well I finally saw the video of the WiiMusic e3 presentation and have to say, it certainly didn't look better than any videogame I've played - and that includes Superman 64.
Plus, I do like how Games Radar made an award for Miyamoto calling the 'educational toy' 'better than a videogame'.
I think it was 'Most Crushingly Disappointing Moment - Miyamoto says toys better than videogames'.
Mind you, we all knew that anyway - he's said a lot that he doesn't play games - I guess it's like a rugby player who doesn't like the sport, just happens to be good at it but prefers football..
TBH I saw the reasoning behind it but (a big one) when they stated it automatically 'corrects' you it defeated the object of any form of 'learning', all it is to me now is failing around and bashing buttons with no form of order still gives music, theres no reward for trying to play correctly in this game for kids. Theres no challenge so yes it can't be a game, but theres no way of getting anything wrong so how can it teach you anything from it?
Sure it may be fun, but thats only going to be a short while and with the requirement of the balance board too it's a heavy price for a limited game. At this current moment all it is is an expenive toy, if I had kids I'd rather give them Guitar Hero or Rock Band as at least they gain at least some learning and co-ordination skills from it.
See all this crap where you can't win or lose and no matter what you do you still succeed? See when these kids join the real world where you can fail at stuff and you need to practice stuff if you want to get good at it, they're really going to get a shock.
I was disgusted by Wii Music at E3. Not only was it horribly cheerful and typically Mii-esque, but the fact that you can "play" "music" without actually having any sense of rhythm is appalling. As a real musician, I find it offensive that some kids are going to think this is all it takes to play an instrument.
Well, I thought Wii Music looked absolute horse s**t personally. I'd much rather have endless sequels to Guitar Hero and Rock Band than give this a go.
I pray it flops utterly when it's released, Nintendo's new direction is questioned internally, and they go back to doing what they do best - making games, NOT toys.
How can a man that has spent his entire life creating the most iconic games and game characters ever, and making gaming today what it is, claim that something with no aim, no scores, no POINT is better than a video game?
How the hell will holding a Wii-mote to my mouth and pressing the 4 buttons on it teach me how to play a saxaphone?
I'm really looking forward to this. First of all, the fact there is no risk of failure means that I won't ever have to lose. That means that the nurse won't have to increase my medication to deal with my rage. Secondly, I'll now have a chance to play at an imaginary saxophone with my imaginary friend, Charlie Chuckleston. He likes playing the drums. And stabbing people.
It's not music though. It is quite possibly the cheapest, nastiest MIDI I have ever heard. At least if they are going to make a music game, make it pleasing to the ears.

Yea, it's like the looked at Guitar Hero, Rock Band and if the two main components are playing along pitch-perfectly (if you're good enough) to your favourite songs and looking like a bit of a k**b while playing, they said
"ah yes, people like to look like k**bs while playing" so they focused on that, rather than what the actual MUSIC sounds like.
So what you got at the e3 press conference was the most politically correct group of people you'll ever meet, all looking like k**bs together, creating a slower and worse-sounding version of the original mario bros tune.

Further more, renaming WiiMusic to a more accurate description of the content: WiiMidii?

I agree its just a slap in the face, but this is surely aimed at very young children. Im talking five year olds here. Learning for kids that age isnt supposed to be complex, its just supposed to be the movements and the actions required to play it. Plus it would be fun for a five year old.
For anyone else that wants to play it, I have a cheaper version for you. Seeing as its impossible to make a mistake, simply put your favourite CD on at home and dance about with your Wii Remote 'playing' the song of your choice!
Seriously, whats the point in buying it? We can all do this already if we want to.
We don't want a game like that. The Wii is meant to be a f**king games console. And anything Wii Music can do...Guitar Hero and Sing Star can do better. And (at least with Guitar Hero) that is a video game. With scores, something for competition.
Nintendo will carry on selling to the casual market, but I can't believe they can screw over the hardcroe gamers this much. If only SEGA came back and Nintendo slid away from the console market to the "Toys and Games"...it would be good.

That's precisely what I've been thinking lately. There seems to be an enormous shift in focus within Nintendo, and the shift seems to be accelerating rapidly.
I recall when the Wii was first announced Nintendo said that they weren't interested in offering multimedia; that Wii and DS were games machines.
The Wii might be without a DVD player but it has a full internet browser (something even the 360 hasn't got), excercise peripherals, and now WiiMusic.
In my opinion WiiFit and WiiMusic are the worst kind of toy there is - one that infers educational/health qualities yet actually offers nothing of the sort. Kids would be better off playing swingball in their garden or banging pots and pans and twanging elastic bands stretched over margarine tubs than "playing" this novelty tat.
To Nintendo: It was nice knowing you, please close the door on your way out.
The thing thats funny is the amount of people saying Nintendo have got it wrong.
Ive been a huge critic of their E3 display, but when you sit down and think about it, they know what they're doing.
How many of us are there? You know, people that come on the internet to moan about how badly Nintendo are doing? Probably round about the same amount of people that buy Okami or Zack & Wiki. There aren't enough of us to make any company profitable.
You cant really blame Nintendo for going after casual gamers and kids, and their E3 conference wasnt aimed at hardcore or casual gamers - it was aimed at the press.
I mean whats gonna get on the gadget show? Resistance or Wii Music? Its just promotion, thats all.
However, it is a risky strategy cos if this all goes out of fashion one day, they may find that all their original followers have migrated to Sony and Microsoft, and maybe in the future, Apple.
For now though, you cant really blame them for chasing the dollar. They were on the verge of folding after the Gamecube, a console aimed at Core gamers. Where did that get them?

Exactly, half the people moaning won't even have bought a Gamecube because they just don't want anything to with Nintendo in the first place.
Stuff like this just gives them an excuse to moan even more...

Well I loved the Gamecube, and whilst I can understand why they're "chasing the dollar", I really can't stand Nintendos' new direction. WiiMusic is represents everything that is cynical and cheap about gaming today. Terrible graphics, sound and content dressed up with the modern buzz word of being "inclusive" and eschewing all the progress gaming has made as an art form, in favour of novelty and gimmick. I'm not bottomd about HD or 7.1 surround, but WiiMusic is so scared of challenging anyone it doesn't even look like it'll live up to its own promise, let alone that of the entire game industry and its leading console.
Seriously, how is churning out endless novelty experiences (not games) with bespoke (and expensive) peripherals, a sustainable and stable future for gaming? Simply put, it is not.

Well thats it, as miyamoto says 'it isnt a game'.
Its not supposed to be a game, its meant to be a toy, and so in one sense Nintendo is moving into a different industry altogether.
Personally I think its a waste of time aswell, and as I said earlier, you may aswell dance around pressing buttons to your favourite cd if you want Wii Music. I can see the point of it though and how it would appeal to kids.
Any adult playing this 'game' though should immediatly be put down. Its like a Fisher Price Cooker or something. It'll sell millions though.
Enough damn moaning, if you think its sh*t then don't buy it. Obviously its not going to appeal to everyone in the world, all Miyamoto wants is to give people who can't play instruments the feelimg of music.
I know waving a remote around isn't playing any instruments but it creates a good illusion of it.

Yes you're right.
But then again using a shampoo bottle as a microphone has exactly rhe same effect.
As much as up to now I've been of afraid of the day Miyamoto retires, it seems like he's beginning to lose his marbles. So better put him down now before he puts Nintendo back into the grave he once dug it out of.
Oh and to be fair, the only thing that looks good about WiiMusic is the drums part. Probably the only bit that'll work decently, will be educational, takes up a lot less space than a real or even a plastic drumkit, the balance board functionality is quite a clever idea and the guy on stage did do a pretty good job and didn't look like some complete tart who waves their hands around like a lunatic
