MS: Marketplace design "not our smartest moment"

We expected 200 items - now there's 20,000, says XBL boss
The current 360 dashboard doesn't make "all the things it could do" clear to Xbox owners, and with the current Marketplace design it's "too hard to find content", said Xbox Live boss Marc Witten.

Speaking to Xbox 360: The Official Magazine, Witten said that many Xbox owners "didn't know all the things it could do".

"They might not have known they could look at photos. They might not know they could plug in their iPods or watch movies. We found out that when they did know, they were much happier and felt like they were getting more value.

"When we designed our Marketplace we expected 100-200 items to be in there," he continued. "That was not our smartest moment ever, but today we're sitting with about 20,000 items in the system and that number is growing really fast. We found out from our customers that it's too hard to find content and people get lost in the user interface."

The new "Xbox Experience" is a slick, simple-looking interface with games, music and movies clearly displayed and separated - a bit like Windows Media Centre. Have a look here.

The new dashboard also adds higher supported resolutions, a copy-to-hard-drive game feature and those Avatars. But according to Witten, all your old themes and Gamer Pictures will still work - yesterday Microsoft's Major Nelson even said you won't have to use the new design if you don't want to.

"The new Xbox 360 experience isn't about removing anything," Witten told OXM. "It's about adding new functionality and making it clear exactly what the box does.

"Themes look quite beautiful in this world. The 3d parts in the background move up and down and change between the different slides and look quite stunning."

Read the full interview over on OXM's website.

Must admit that I spent an hour sifting through the arcade games last night. Blimey, there is tons of rubbish on there. Exit looks interesting though. Maybe a user review system like on Youtube could be useful.

the Blade system was fine to start with but as LIVE & the 360 has evolved the blades & interface have become cluttered. Its the perfect time for an update & i like the look of the new dashboard it seems nice & clean & easy to use, & once Epic release a COG armour for those avatars they'll be pretty cool too.

I think ms under-estimated the scale of the marketplace, it does need changing. I really like sonys new look store, it clear, easy to read and good looking, plus the option to view it as a list or as the squares is very cool.

Does that mean you're going to scratch that - frankly absurd - idea of getting rid of the lower scoring arcade games?

@ Mark240473 - Exit is really good if you enjoy more thoughtful games. Some of the later levels have you scratching your head trying to figure out how to do it. Its a personal XBLA favourite.
mfnick on 22 Jul '08
Running games from the hard drive sounds cool! No need to change discs and the 360 is silent without that dvd drive noise. The only thing is how long will it take to install them to hdd? Confused

I think the store could use a new system too. If you miss something on the new arrivals, it gets chucked in with the ton of stuff and is harder to find.

And to think that people criticize the Playstation store for not having enough content. I'll take quality over quantity every time.

Would love to see Ikaruga on PSN though. Sad

90% of XBLA games are crap anyway.

Most of them can be found on the net for free.

Meh, saying that the dashboard wasnt suitable is a load of rubbish. A couple of days tinkering about with it gets everything you want to do done. Plus, who the hell uses their 360 to look at photos?
That they are admiting that they know people wont like it is a serious flaw, why change what already works, excellently? I can go into the marketplace, look for my chosen game, and download whatever I want for it.

It isn't really suitable anymore, though. Its become cluttered and the Marketplace Blade can be pretty confusing to navigate through, particularly if you're searching for one particular thing or you dont check it too often.

And actually, I use my 360 to look at photos. I use both the PS3 and the 360 for media streaming capabilities (though I tend to use the 360 more since the interface isn't so retarded when it comes to listening to music and playing a slideshow of pictures)

if u dont want the new dashboard, then dont use it, you can stay with the old blade system, they are gonna run parallel.

No you cannot.

No they are not.

How many times does this need to be said? The blades that you see now in the dashboard will be gone for good. You'll never use them again, ever. You have to upgrade to the new version, you wont be able to use Xbox Live again until you do.

When they talk about being able to use the blades still, they're talking about the updated version of the Guide. When you press the Guide button (the big X in the middle of the pad) you don't get the slide-in blade from the left side of the screen anymore.

You get what is basically a mini version of the original dashboard. It's all grey, and it contains everything you can do now in the full dashboard. Look at your friends, messages, games, marketplace, music, videos, settings - absolutely everything from inside whatever you're doing (playing a game, watching a movie etc)

I think its fine for what it does, but whats hard about selecting played games and scrolling down to find the one you want?
Thing is, the new dash' will work in the exact same way in terms of the marketplace, just shiny and more like windows media center...And with a stupid little man waving at me.
If they have developers making things for the avatars for FREE, then at least it will cut down on all the clones. What, 9 million odd live members and they expect none to look alike? Plus, I just want to have the option to make my avatar look like a Scottish highlander! Then I'll stop complaining...

I didn't even realise Exit was on XBLA! I've been sitting waiting for it to come out on DS like was originally announced!

I loved the Flash version so I'll need to grab this ASAP.

But I have no problem with the current dashboard. It's not fancy and it's not quick, but it does everything you need it to. I spend most of my time playing games, so I don't even see it that often. I like the new look, but it wouldn't break my heart if it never changed.

ALright love keep your knickers on... i'm only going on what i have read (as you are) this is what it said on MAXCONSOLES & Major Nelson has done a podcast, i might be confused but thats how i read it.

MS: If you don't like the new 360 dash, then don't use it

As part of his latest podcast, Major Nelson has reminded us all that if we don't like the new Xbox 360 dashboard then we simply don't have to use it. He noted that all the functions in the current Xbox 360 dash will be included in the brand new dashboard of which you can completely bypass the pleasure of using should you wish. His comments come as he anticipated that people simply don't like change sometimes, listen to the podcast in full at Majornelson.com.

At what point did I say I expected the old dashboard to stay? Sure I dont like the look of the new one and since it is just media center, I wont like how it works, but I'll get used to it. I realise i cant get the current dashboard, only as a guide now, but at what point did I say that I was happy I could keep it? I'd like to, but I know I cant.
I was giving my views on THIS article not that of being able to have the blades as the guide. That the current system doesn't work. I though it did.

The ability to stream photos from my computer thru the xbox onto my 40 inch tele is one of the best features of the 360 (and PS3). We come in after a night on the piddle and look at the pics from the night in massive HD glory!

First of all, the community 'channel' is nothing like Home at all. It's basically your friends list, but rather than being shown in text format, it shows your friends avatars in a row.

How exactly is that 'like' a secondlife-style 3D environment where you can walk around and talk to people? It's not even slightly similar.

And dangermou5e - sounds like you need to confront a few sexual demons. You're seriously not comfortable in your skin...

That's why it's a rubbish version of home - there's nowhere to go, you form a party sit there with your cutomised avitar talking to your mates in the Cafe then watch a film together or play some UNO - sounds a lot like home to me, but without the wandering around.

Are you really looking forward to having to wait for your 3D world to load, walk over to your friends to get within earshot of them so you can talk, ask them what they want to do, walk or warp to another area which also needs to load - for each person on their differing connection speeds?

Nobody is forcing you to use the avatars - it's already been confirmed that you can keep your gamerpictures instead.

Exactly! It's a kneejerk reaction to what their competitors are doing. Reminds me of the stew I attempted to make several weeks ago. I'd stewed the meat and put all the veg in and to all intents and purposes it was ready to eat. It smelt lovely and tasted really flavoursome but in the search for that extra 'je ne sais quoi' I added a small dash of chilli powder. To my dismay it ruined the whole dish and all I could taste was green thai curry - I used the wrong bottle. The lesson learnt was why fix what isn't broke. That extra straw can break the camel's back and in this case the camel is the XBL dashboard. No wonder so many xbox owners have got the hump over this! Very Happy

But the thing is, if you think about it logically, the current dashboard is broken in many ways. For example:

Takes too long to find something even if you know what it is - this is mainly aimed at the marketplace when looking for something to download. Unless it's new and appearing on the front page or in the 'latest releases' section, you have to scroll through huge alphabetic lists. There needs to be more filters, maybe even a search area.

The guide is extremely laggy in many games - GTA IV is the biggest culprit.

It takes too long for your list of 'owned' arcade games to show up - even longer for your list of downloaded demos. This should be cached and synced - not queried each time you open the blade.

The themes are basically useless because of the amount of content on each screen. You can't see 90% of the fancy backgrounds.

These are just a few that I can think of from the top of my head.

This redesign is definitely needed - it's not a knee-jerk reaction. The avatars are a knee-jerk reaction, but the new dashboard is not.

Firstly, the mere fact that you need to call me a 'tailgunner' shows that anything even slightly homosexual forces you into an extremely transparent defensive mode.

I love that you bash the whole idea of avatars when you yourself have an animated Final Fantasy one.

The point of avatars is to express yourself. However much I like the current gamerpics, I'd much rather have something that I could tweak to look like myself. It's not about 'dressing up' or 'playing barbie' - It's called customising your experience.

Have you ever played a sports game? Or Oblivion? Or Fable? Or Mass Effect? Did you rant on at the developers for letting you create and customise your own character? I'd put money on it that you didnt.

And again, the fact that you need to resort to kiddy/gay stereotypes to 'prove' what little point you have is just showing how insecure you are in yourself.
MrXBob on 22 Jul '08
It doesn't work as well as it use to but to not know all the things one can do is just users too afraid to press a button or two. I must admit I don't even remember where they put the patch in order to use an Ipod. It used to be in there but it would take some time to find it now.

Maybe you should wait and think about your response instead of thinking up little comebacks first - then perhaps I'd pay more attention to you.

Your opinion means nothing when it starts with such a stupid insult.

C'mon ladies, put the handbags away.

How am I supposed to wind up Xbob if he's already getting his briefs in a bunch over being called a tailgunner! Laughing
English Shmuppet on 22 Jul '08
Woah - guys, guys....before this gets way out of hand, can we get back on topic?

Personally, I quite like the Avatar idea and I think it will appeal to a lot of 360 users. I choose not to buy themes and gamer-pics and I very rarely buy Limited Editions of games, so I suspect my gamer pic is the same as thousands (if not hundreds of thousands) of 360 gamers around the world.

It's obviously not going to be for everyone, but that's cool.

Anything that helps the dashboard be a little more user-friendly is welcome too - I hated the idea of deleting low rated arcade games....that was stupid.

I've only really bought the halo legendary mappack from the marketplace, and it wasn't hard to find at all. The renewal of the Live account was also fairly straightforward. The new dashboard looks too childish for my taste, and the avatar thing is so lame. Good thing M$ gave us the option to keep the current one.

Now that FF is coming to the 360, the PS3 is like an emasculated male prostitute, it's utterly useless. I had really saved around $530 (in my currency) to get the PS3 and it's accessories, but now, I'll just swim in my hard saved cash. Here's to hoping that MS buys MGS4 and God of war 3!

Funnily, since listening to the podcas ive gone from dead agains the avatar idea to it actually being one of my most anticipated momets of 2009.

I mean...wo doesn't want to be able to create a vrsion of themselves and then dress them up in Hasmat gear?

The whole Avatar thing on the 360 has actually got some real potential.

Achievemnts - What's better than having a gamer pic that shows you have killed 10,000 people in a GOW ranked match? Being able to equip an avatar with a Lancer thats what. And whats more whilst a gamer pic only lets you brag about one achivement an avatar could allow you to brag about several differnet game achivements at once....

....spartan helmet, Lancer, Hyabusa swords on your back, tight little Rumble Roses Hot Pants, UNO T-sirt....etc.

Vision Cam - Probably a little out of the question to put your gamer face on avatars ala Tiger Woods and Rainbow 6 but hell...maybe theyl let me take a photo of watever i want and stick it on a t-sirt. Or maybe create masks for the avatar to wear with my face on.

Spread some love - maybe letting people send gear to eac other (not achievement relatd gear but gear non the less). Creating a "I Facebooked your mum" tshirt and sending it out to everyone on your friends list and seeing tem all come on line 1 by 1 with your creation. Great stuff.

Hats - hats are awesome. Beg able to ave a sparten helmet whilst wearing a stetson....really f**king awesome!

make them age specific - Under 16s having to have little avatars so when you enter a room you can see its full of kids immediately and leave!

im full of thougts on this but id be vry suprised if at least a couple of these dont happen.
teeps1981 on 22 Jul '08
But I'm still confused. If it really is optional then how does somebody without the update communicate with somebody who has?

Having sex with a beautiful lady. Followed by a good kip and breakfast in bed.

It's only an achievement if it gets you laid. That's why the PS3's trophies are more sophisticated. You're either Gold, Silver or Bronze... 1st - the bad boy worst, 2nd - the shiny best or 3rd - the one with the hairy chest. All guaranteed to get you laid.

I couldn't be bothered to reply to the rest of your message because it is just way too nerdy.

LordVonPS3 looks around the room to gain admiration but realises the only other person in the house is his dear 87 yeard old mother and she has been dead on the sofa downstairs for 3 years now.

Pasty and white, LordVonPS3 tries to stand but his legs give way having not been used for 3 yeas. He drags himself over to his window.

Smelling like 3 year old p**s, poo and stale sweat LordVonPS3pulls himself up to the window ledge, eager to share his 'red ring'joke with somoene. He slowly ease the curtains back...

No it doesn't. Just because you named yourself MrXBoob doesn't make you the highest authority on all things xbox.

What the hell are you even talking about? What I've said has been re-iterated by both Major Nelson and Shane Kim twice already.

It's fact. You will never be able to go back to the original Xbox 360 'blades' dashboard ever again. If you do not update to the new version, you will never be able to use Xbox Live again - because it will simply keep asking you to update.

Ugh.

What he's said is true.

But he's talking about using the same options you do now, in the same sort of layout, FROM THE GUIDE.

He's saying to never visit the dashboard. That is all he's saying.

If you never visit the dashboard, then of course you'll never have to use it. But you will NOT be using the original blades interface EVER again.

It's not fu*king rocket science.

THIS IS ALL YOU WILL EVER SEE OF YOUR PRECIOUS BLADES Okay??
MrXBob on 22 Jul '08
Copying games to the hard drive is an ace idea. Will be fantastic for the games I play the most, and depending on copy times, could pretty much screw the blu-ray storage arguement.

I think we should all be receptive to the new dashboard. We just got used to the old one, like we will with this one. If anyone knows how to make a decent dashboard it's Xbox. Give it a shot n if it sucks then come back and complain!
JazzJ on 23 Jul '08
Take a look at the blades on this interface - they're a joke! They don't even look remotely like the ones they're replacing.

You still have to go through the new dashboard to get to the blades via the guide button.

The blades are about one quarter of the size they currently are now and sit in the middle of the screen. The new dashboard is clearly visible behind the blades. The blades no longer support gamerpics and themes. When they say they are still supported they mean the new dashboard supports them, kind of. The blades are also a very dull plain gray color as well. They're horrid.

How come every time a Micro$ucks lacky says "Calm down, you don't even have to use the new interface" they never submit a picture of what the new blades look like.

Micro$sucks is full of crap and I'll be getting rid of my Xbox 360's this fall when that abomination of an interface is crammed down our throats!

And yes, regardless of what they say (lies anyway) the update is mandatory. How else can they force you into buying more DLC (Netflix) that you don't even want. The new dashboard isn't an interface it's a storefront! Mad
Celidus on 23 Jul '08
Damnit! The new interface seems SO lame, and the new "guide" ( Rolling Eyes ) blade system seems lamer still. If they're doing it to force netflix, too bad for me because my net is so slow, I can barely stream trailers from gametrailers.com, how the hell am I supposed to use that facility???

Couldn't MS have done this BEFORE I bought my 360???
BeNdEr91 on 23 Jul '08

Seems to me you'd be better suited to a Playstation 3 anyway if what you want from a games console is nothing to do with the games but the functionality it gives you...

Jesus, is it REALLY that big a deal? How long have you spent looking at the dashboard since you've had your 360, in percentage terms?
