Sony says nothing on 'PSP 3000'

New PSP said to feature mic, new buttons, but Sony isn't saying anything
Images have emerged of what's claimed to be an upcoming hardware update for the PSP, sporting new buttons and a built in microphone.

The pics, which cropped up on Chinese forum PSPChina (via Kotaku), show the new 'PSP 3000' shell complete with 'PS button' in place of the old 'home' one and a tiny microphone off to the side.

The metallic ring on the UMD drive on the back of the console is also thinner, possibly keeping the handheld more stable on flat surfaces.

The PSP Slim & Lite, which is much lighter than it is thinner, only hit the shops last year.

For brand consolidation reasons it'd make perfect sense to switch the 'home' button out for the PS3's version, and the other changes aren't exactly earth shattering, so we reckon this update could be plausible.

We've just got off the phone with Sony Computer Entertainment's UK office though and it's dishing out a straight "no comment" on the PSP 3000 pics. Predictable.

Check out the pics on the right.

Who gives a monkeys bottom if there is anew psp version due. The games are crap for PSP so changing the design AGAIN isn't gonna make people buy it. Make some decent games and then maybe people will pay for a PSP. No wonder the DS is best handheld on market as it has brilliant games..

Interesting, although if true i dont know how much difference this would make. Would it be reason enough to upgrade from my launch PSP? Probably not as PSP 2 wasn't.

What if this WAS an upgrade to an existing PSP *shrug* Let's be fair, this news is hardly clear.

Or even news.

I got a white psp slim and lite the other month and love it, looks and feels so much smaller and nicer than the psp phat. IMO this looks fake, you know what china is like with stuff like this.

Hmmm. Only one game with a score higher than 90%... and there are UMD films in the top 20?

Seriously, though, with a good Burnout and a good Tekken title on there, you don't really need any other games to find an excuse to buy one. God of War and Patapon are just the icing on the cake.

As little as I play it (thanks to it being too massive to practically carry around) there is some real quality on PSP.
Just seems people like to bitch based on what it was like 2 years ago and having not actually played on one/looked at what's actually available.

Not to mention Crisis Core! Missions were a bit repetitive but good story.

Could do with being half the size, add another analogue "nub" and bin the whole UMD thing. Very Happy

I have a PSP. Bar one or two games, it's a very disappointing piece of games technology.

The same thing is happening with the PS3. Lots of great games out now, yet people still use the old "there are no games" argument. It's very tired now.

Old habits die hard, I suppose.

I agree, I am very dissapointed with mine. Although there are some great games out for it like Patapon, Loco Roco and the GTA series, the hardware is rubbish. The ergonomics are poor with the analogue nub in completely the wrong place but the biggest let down is the screen. It is impossible to see when outside due to it being backlit with a super shiny surface. All I can see when outside is reflections on a black screen! The screen is also very slow which leads to motion blur on most games. Why they did not address these issues for the PSP lite is beyond me. Instead they put in a cheapo disc slot and made it slighlty slimmer. When you eject the disk from the lite it just falls out!
