Resi 5 confirmed for Wii (by Sega)

A "simple slip of the tongue" from Sega of America president, Simon Jeffrey
Resident Evil 5 is coming to Wii, apparently. But it's not Nintendo or Capcom that let it slip. It was the president of Sega of America, Simon Jeffrey.

Discussing Nintendo's focus on the core gaming market, Jeffrey said: "The Wii's selling incredible amounts of hardware, but Nintendo knows it needs to expand the demographic. It needs to connect with the core gaming demographic."

He then added: "Resident Evil 5 - when that happens on the Wii that's going to help."

We scrambled for the phone to speak with Capcom who's 'funny' spokesperson gave us this comment: "We have nothing further to announce regarding Resident Evil 5 at this time," adding, sarcastically: "Did you hear about the Sonic MMO, though, for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, Wii, DS and Megadrive? And they're bringing back the Dreamcast! Because it was brilliant."

Jeffrey insists the shocking statement during the Kotaku interview was a "simple slip of the tongue", and Reggie says Resi 5 isn't happening "yet".
Still, makes you wonder what Sega may know that we don't...

Makes sense given the success of RE4 on the 'Cube and Wii. I've not looked at the trailers or info on RE5 up until now (no 360 or PS3)so I'm not sure if it makes use of the same perspective as RE4, but if it does then surely dust down the engine used for RE 4, as is the case with Dead Rising, and Bob's your uncle.

Haha I love the Capcom representatives comments.

Why would Sega have any idea what Capcom are upto. Obviously just a slip of the tongue.
maugrim2712 on 23 Jul '08
Resi 5 on Wii - if only. Still, if Dead Rising does well on the Wii then anything could happen, and Capcom has consistantly been the best Third Party support for the Wii in my opinion.
UK Jester on 23 Jul '08
maybe they're testing the water with converting dead rising and if that goes well.....RE5 here we come Laughing
shellster2 on 23 Jul '08
Laughing Capcoms reps are great! Werent they the ones who went on that rant about 'no comment' too? Brilliant.

I own Resident Evil 4 for the Wii but despite the new control scheme working relatively well with the game, it didn't IMO make the game any more or less enjoyable to play than the previous Gamecube with a bog standard controller. Thus I'll be buying Resident Evil 5 for my 360 or PS3 because it'll run better and look nicer on my 32" HDTV. It's the reason I buy all of my multiformat games on the 360 rather than the Wii; I don't think the controller adds anything to those games, it's just a different way of playing them that's all. However, the Wii does have noticeably poorer graphics and that is rather jarring when output onto HDTVs.
Doctor_Hades on 23 Jul '08
From what I've seen of RE5 so far there is no reason why the Wii couldn't do it justice. Apart from being in HD and having a better lighting engine, and a co-op - it really isn't a big leap on from RE4, even using the same animations in many cases.

Although I'm sure the Sega guy meant to say 'Dead Rising' so I wouldn't get too excited. I'd rather see the Resi 4 engine used to remake Resi 2.. that would be a great exclusive!
Eclipse Dj on 23 Jul '08
whoops

yay

hope it has online with wii speak then it would be a top seller.
footieharry on 23 Jul '08
I hope this turns out to be true so long as it is made to take advantage of the Wii's abilities otherwise why would anyone buy it for the console over PS3/Xbox. But I agree with one of the previous comments, I bet he meant Dead Rising.

Yes, it is a shame that the Wii couldn't offer a 720p as their HD standard, just having that resolution would improved the Wii's appeal to all HDTV owners.

I totally enjoyed the motion controls on Resident Evil 4:Wii and found it made the experience more immersive. Admittingly, at the time I played I didnt have a HD tv which does make it look uglier.

I enjoy get carried away with the Wii controller system. I used to contort my body into silly positions and even lean back or look around corners without it having any effect on the game Laughing It is so cool feeling tired from all the exertion - it is all part of the experience.

I'd be happy if we had to wait a year for Resident Evil 5: Wii and got to play it with the MotionPlus add-on and had online co-op too. No need to rush a good thing - we don't need another Alone in the Dark Mad fiasco.

Because they don't own a PS3 or 360?

Indeed - almost certainly what he meant. After all, why would Sega know what Capcom are up to?

I've been saying this for ages.
In fact, I'd rather see this than Resi 5... Resi 4 was brilliant, and 5 looks to be just as awesome, but there aren't nearly enough zombies... Very Happy

IMO resi 4 on wii made the best game ever even better and i have played it through at least another 4 times since. after playing the likes of mgs4 on my ps3 there is still nothing to touch resi 4 graphically or the sheer amount of effort given to the graphics and game play of this game. as an example, even toward the end of the game there is a mass of pipework and machinery in a tunnel, nothing to do with the game but they just did not let up on the imagination even down to the end of a huge, huge game. the only thing missing for me was the sharp look of HD. mgs4 never had the imagination of this game. put resi 5 on the wii and it will be a massive hit even if the graphics are not as sharp as the ps3 / 360. i would be more than happy to play the game in the same format / resolution as resi 4, or even playing using the resi 4 engine just for the faultless controls.
roger4000 on 23 Jul '08
Resi 2 is easily my favourite one. Hell i'd be happy if they only remade it in a similar style to the GC remake of Resi 1. But in Resi 4 style would be just as awesome.

Yeah. Resi 2 is my fave one of the series. I was hoping for one when they remade the first.

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to:

- Lower resolution
- Lousy audio
- Inferior lighting and other effects
- Worse A.I
- Fewer enemies (on screen)
- Wii-controls
- Smaller levels
- Crappy textures
- horrendous animations
- Terrible collision detection
- s**tty mini-games

Sounds like a heap of fun! Shocked
Dinalfos on 23 Jul '08
Yeah, I'm really looking forward to:
- stopping trying to perform auto fellatio
- pestering the neighbours dog when i get home
- ringing those numbers on the backs of vans that says 'hows my driving?'
- stopping referring to my sister as 'our lass'
- getting laid before i'm 26 - oops! too late!
- moving out of my nans loft
- stopping doing favours for sailors
- slitting my wrists

Sounds like a heap of fun! Shocked

That list looks a bit more realistic now.

Wow! Everybody in the gaming press is saying that Resident Evil 5 is confirmed for the Wii. But every time I read the actual article, it's anything but confirmed.

This is up there with the "Wii's Lead in Japan over PS3 is shrinking!" headlines.
cirej2000 on 23 Jul '08
This is up there with Perrin Kaplan confirming the Wii will be region free... (watch the video, Jeffrey clearly knows what he's talking about Rolling Eyes . Makes you wonder if Sambo di Amigo on Wii took them a long time to consider.)

I find it amusing when people talk about AI in terms of processing power Laughing

The vast majority of AI in games is scripted, and takes bugger all processing power. Wink

I can't see why Resident Evil 5 can't be released for the Wii, after all the Resident Evil 5 engine is based on the Resident Evil 4 engine as far as I remember...and the Resident Evil 4 engine on the Gamecube and PS2 had no problems handling plenty of enemies on the screen during the part when shedloads of villagers started attacking Leon after he sees the policeman burning in the village as well as when shedloads of villagers attack the cabin.

There's also plentry of enemies for the Mercenaries game. The engine seems pretty solid to me, and it looks good enough too.

It wouldn't surprise me if they're already working on it.
snowdog on 23 Jul '08
Personally can't see it happening, and if it does, it won't be for some time, much like the case with Dead Rising as so much work would have to go into re-working the game so Wii can handle it.
If you're a Resi fan, I think it'd much more logical to just buy a 360 and enjoy a proper next-gen game with online co-op. You'll also then have something to play when Wii has its usual 6 month slump.
vulcanraven01 on 23 Jul '08
There seems to be quite a few rumours going around about third party games for the Wii recently.

Maybe this 'window of opportunity' thing is actually true. Maybe the third parties are gonna try and sell games on the console with the biggest user base. It only makes sense.

If Ninty could get GTA and Resi onside, they may actually save themselves from their p**s poor E3 conference.

Argh! You've reminded me of the conference again. Now another 24 hours of avoiding any discussion on that cluster**** must begin.

And yeah, I don't see why they couldn't do RE5 on the Wii...I have yet to see anything outside of the kick-ass graphics (why must everything be so brown?) that doesn't scream RE4 engine. But I'll be getting it either for the PS3 or 360...and maybe I'd rent a Wii version if the controls added something special to the mix.

Makes sense. They've already got the engine up and running with Dead Rising. So I can't see why they can't do a cut-down (maybe the wrong word, but you know what I mean) version of Resident Evil 5 on the Wii.

The final kick in the balls after E3 would be Capcom turning round and saying;

'Yes we can confirm we are bringing a new Resident Evil to Wii.... Umbrella Chronicles 2.' Laughing

I think that would literally kill me!

All true.

Considering it was normal for me to see around 15 Ganados enemies at once in RE4, a version of RE5 at 480p doesn't sound too unlikely after watching game footage.

Come on Capcom, milk the game for all it's worth Smile .

I'm in agreement that Re2 is my favorite in the series (having played all but 3 and CV). I really like 4, but I'm not counting that since it had a different feel from the rest of the series.

Although I like the games, I don't like a lot of the s**t they started doing, mainly the Matrix-esque crap with the martial arts; and all the flipping around and slow motion sequences, which I guess started with the movies (which I found absolutely abysmal). It kind of takes me out of the scary feel of the survival horror element when suddenly there's characters ninja-kicking zombies in the head and catching guns in mid air, then pulling off a perfect headshot.

I guess the reason I like RE2 so much because it seems like the last game of the series that they made where they didn't add that element to it. I don't know if 3 does it, but I recall seeing a clip from CV where Weskers running along a wall then punching/kicking some monster in the face. I would enjoy the series so much more if they did away with that stupid s**t.
mrlonelyhearts on 24 Jul '08
HEHE! It's a slip of the old Sega tounge.
wudragon on 24 Jul '08
I don't see why it wouldn't be possible, the motion Controls added a lot to the aiming and interactivity in RE:4, of course there's fanboys that say no it adds nothing, but seriously, not having the aim drop like you do with the control stick adds a LOT to me.

The aiming being precise would be awesome, something like Metroid+ the new hardware Nintendo released to add more to 1:1 gaming would be insane. Imagine knifing!! Very HappyVery Happy They could make this game sell and score better than PS3 and 360 versions, if they release a PC version it may get in conflict in my eyes, as both would be the better versions for me.

Gfx is not a problem if they better the Re:4 engine and no, Processing power has nothing to do with Ai, they follow a script just like anything that you can interact in a game, depending on how you interact with it, it'll react in different ways. Guess some ppl above need to do some research before blabbing about.

They Could use Dual layer DVD's like SSBB to increase mem capacity and add to the gfx and maps, although Re:4 was huge...

They can make it happen if they want to by investing a little more than half of what they would on the PS3 and 360 versions and make a massive game that would be the definate version EASY. Also capcom, have a chat to N and ask about storage ideas so you can use that in your projact development. Wink
