EA suffered with "imprecise" Wii controls

EA boss John Riccitiello slams standard Remote, praises Wii MotionPlus
EA boss man John Riccitiello has admitted that EA has "suffered from ... imprecise control on Wii," but looks forward to the improvements made by Nintendo's new Wii MotionPlus peripheral.

"The Wii MotionPlus is going to be good," said Riccitiello, adding: "If I had to pick one thing we suffered from, it was imprecise control on the Wii.

"That meant certain genres were never going to perform as well on the Wii. There are a couple of franchises in our booth. Go look at Dead Space and imagine playing that game with a wand and a Nunchuk," he told Venture Beat.

Actually, we can't see why that wouldn't work just fine. Resident Evil 4 worked well, if not better than on the standard controller of the GameCube original. So did Zelda.

But Riccitiello says: "If they improve the precision, then you could have a good experience."

Wii MotionPlus is a small peripheral that clips onto the bottom of the Remote adding what Nintendo says is "true 1:1 response". It'll be bundled with Wii Sports Resort out next year.

EA have done nothing in an attempt to use the motion controls at all.

I'm concerned that if more games use this, it will become a mandatory purchase, and I don't like that idea given that the wii remote should have arguably had this from the beginning.
mooksam22 on 23 Jul '08
The Godfather: Blackhand could have used the more accurate controls, but it still remains the one game I use to justify why Wii games should have been much better than they are.
It made fantastic use of them and I applaud it's effort. If other games used systems up to this standard the Wii back catalogue would look much better.

And it's an EA game. Man I feel dirty now. Where's the bleach..?

I'm quite sure most games will give you an option, still allowing a standard remote to play, but offering improved control with a 'MotionPlus' connected.

Tiger Woods will certainly benefit from 1:1 controls allowing more accuracy of power, direction and tilt/angle to slice your shot. Maybe we will get a decent 'Cricket 09' game from them, or a NHL with proper 1:1 stick control over the puck.
Eclipse Dj on 23 Jul '08
Just look at Tiger Woods 2008: bad controls - they should have looked at the golf-game of Wii Sports, but... as lame as they ever are, they didn't...
BunnySan on 23 Jul '08
The Wii Remote is cheap crap, and WiiRemote Plus is what was expected at launch.
For a machine that doesn't focus on graphics and goes the way of motion sensing this should have been standard in all Wii Remotes.
Before it was barely even motion sensing, this thing better be cheap...

LOL@ EA blaming the controller for their failures.

now the 1:1 is coming out we need some sort of light saber game where you stand on the board and it tracks your body position too.

Yeah and we can use Wii Speak to try out Jedi mind tricks voice commands! Very Happy

Sorry to contradict you... But if Wii Sports Resort is anything to go by...

IGNWii Sports Resort will launch with a MotionPlus dongle as a pack in, but since the Wii is all about playing with others, you'll obviously have to buy at least one more. The title game will not function with any thing less than a MotionPlus enabled Wiimote, which sets a precedent for pretty much every Wii game coming out in 2009. Necessitating hardware upgrades for gameplay has traditionally been a serious no-no in the console space, but Nintendo seems to be on a mission to break down old gaming boundaries. The MotionPlus is certainly a great upgrade to the Wii's innovative gaming prowess, but the question will certainly loom as to whether Nintendo may me asking too much of its new, casual-core audience in demanding the investment of $80+ in controllers for everyone who wants to play.

Well then there's no excuse for EA not to make anything less than awesome games for the Wii from now on...

...Except the fact they're EA.
BrettJay on 23 Jul '08
Well as I've said on the thread about the new Nintendo patent, history has proven that add-ons to the original SKU often have low uptake at best, and at worst can even prove fatal to a console, as the previously clear message becomes increasingly muddied. It's arguable that this is one of the reasons Wii appealed to non-gamers in the first place; with several PS3 and 360 SKU options, the Wii still stands out as a single straightforward option.

Optional peripherals like the balance board are safe enough because like dance mats, they're a game-specific controller, but if the core control system needs to be updated, Nintendo may put peoples' noses out of joint.

One of the most disappointing things I felt about Wii when I first played it was that 1:1 tracking was inferred by the exaggerated movements of the people on advertisments, but in reality movement was more gesture-based. So even if altering the core control system at this stage is risky, I personally believe its the right thing to do if the Wii is ever to live up to its original promises.

Saying that, it still sounds like EA are making excuses. The controls work perfectly well on RE4 as the article said.
Mappman on 23 Jul '08
That's true about bad workmen and their tools.

I don't see why this guy is upset about the original version. Godfather had pretty good motion controls.

I hope Nintendo's answer to its ageing hardware isn't to release more peripherals
Nintenjoe64 on 23 Jul '08
Does no one else think that the motion plus makes the Wiimote look REALLY fugly. Third party controller ugly.

Not only that, but they can't release any motionplus-compatible sequels to any games that require (or encourage the use of) one of the many crappy peripherals - as there is no way they could fit with the new add on.

After 2 years of bloody Nintendo fanboys denying the fact that Nintendo outright lied about the fact that the controllers having 1:1 functionality, Ninty then go and release an add-on to add 1:1 functionality (thereby admitting that they had lied to all their loyal followers) and all the fanboys are instantly 'wow this is amazing! Wii is even better".

No, the Wii isn't even better, you're even stupider.
The_Johnson on 23 Jul '08
Actually you seem to be the only fanboy around here- the psn id in your sig gives it away.

And you seem to be the stupid one- thousands of people have seemingly pointed out the fact that additional periphals can be plugged into it- and if you owned a wii you would have checked that before now.

And you clearly haven't read any of the posts here either- as then you would have seen people say they were disappointed by the fact that 1:1 control was largely inferred by advertising from Nintendo, and also complaints about the number of periphals.

Call me a fanboy if you want - I've sold my PS3 as of yesterday.

So are you claiming you can fit the Wii Remote with MotionPlus into the Mario Kart wheel? That'll be interesting.

Imagine one of the retards (or should that be riitards) who has bought the tennis racket shaped controller, or one of the gun shaped peripherals trying to fit their Wii Remote with motionplus into them. That was my point.

Also, I don't have a 20 second memory. I remember, WHEN I HAD A WII (remember that bit) complaining that the system was far less accurate than I had been lead to believe it was, and all the Wii fanboys screaming that I was talking crap and that it was totally 1:1.

Essentially, what Wii fanboys forget, is that they would defend the Wii no matter how obviously wrong they are, then they seem to have forgotten that they ever insisted that the wii had 1:1 functionality and are now saying how great it is going to be.

Do you have two accounts Laughing , that does come across as slightly suspicious.

------------

I don't agree with the Motion Plus peripheral, it undermines the Wii-mote which was never really given much of a chance to begin with.

As for EA...nothing but worthless excuses.
Biggwedge on 23 Jul '08
Oh sorry, i tought you meant periphal as in nunchuk, classic controller etc. Embarassed

Clearly your defintition of periphal goes under my defintition of "crap I don't acknowledge" Very Happy

I was too quick to jump on you and i admit that.

Ha, yes I do - used chris_gower since 2006 but then when i got the ps3 decided to start a new one to link it with my psn ID.

Problem being, i forget that my work laptop has one CVG sign in linked to it and my personal laptop has the other CVG sign in linked to it.

Hardly a secret though, both have 'The_johnson' in the sig and both have lucasarts adventure games as avatars!

No, the Wii isn't even better, you're even stupider.

You're making a big deal out of the fact that people who were dumb enough to buy worthless plastic moldings to fit a controller. Pieces of plastic that do nothing to really affect gameplay at all. You'd have to be one of the dumbest consumers alive to think that you would actually benefit from buying or using any of those attachments. It really shouldn't even be an issue.

And you keep going on about the ads deceiving you. They are ads, ads are generally deceiving. Like the PS3 ads that make it look like a great system with some good games. We all know that this isn't true though. Bottom line, no one is forcing this motion plus thing on anybody. You don't have to get it. But it is there if the gamers and devs would like to use it.

As for myself, if a lot of good games start utilizing this thing than I may get one, but not before then.
