Don't say we didn't tell you; Ubisoft has officially delayed Splinter Cell: Conviction into its 2009-2010 fiscal year, after Xbox World 360 mag reported so back in May of this year.
The ambitious stealth instalment will now be released some time between April 2009 and March 2010. Previously it had a release date before Q1 2009.
A few months back Xbox World 360 magazine reported that the game had been taken "back to the drawing board" and pushed back into the festive period of 2009 - or as late as spring 2010. Nail on the head, then.
The original version was set to have a series star Sam Fisher go proper rogue, hiding amongst the street crowds and tackling police, Jason Bourne style. Read the last preview here.
According to XBW it's likely that the decision was made after Conviction was outdated by more recent gaming developments - most notably Ubisoft's own Assassin's Creed.
At least they're not rushing it out the door. yTake our time Ubisoft: this series could do with a reboot.
I'm glad that they are taking their time with it. The Splinter Cell series is one of my favorite ones of all time and I would not like it to go downhill.
Nevermind- after the averageness that was Double Agent, I'm kinda glad they're really looking into this one. Chaos Theory and Thief are my favourite stealth 'em ups ever!
Thief series are my fave stealth games. Garrett is just so likeable and you care about him. It's odd how Double Agent is my least favourite SC game, but the XBox version which is completely differen is my second fave SC game
I'm playing through Thief: Deadly Shadows right now on my 360. It's pretty good but I am finding it a bit tedious and somewhat repetitive and it's also hard to figure out where the hell i'm supposed to be going. CS is way better.

Just stick at it. The story and Garrett are far more involving then any Splinter Cell one. You have to be extra patient too as Garrett isn't so hot on the fisticuffs etc.
I figured they went back to the drawing board to make it using the newest version of UE3 instead of whatever engine they were planning on.
The new crowd system in UE3 would really help make Conviction's streets look busier without drawing too much from the hardware.
I had high hopes for this game, despite never having played any Splinter Cell's before. I liked the idea of having to disappear into crowds, because I used to do this a lot myself as a kid (it drove my mother nuts).

I will, I always finish what I start.
Do not buy Ikaruga! You will internally combust!
I really enjoyed Thief 3, especially the spooky level. It will leave you with some great memories.
Well, im a huge Splinter cell fan so dont mind waiting, especially as its ubisoft montreal making it and not ubi shanghai.
My take on the delay is that I think the developers got a bit too carried away with the crowd related gameplay, instead of focusing on what SC games are all about.
I'm pretty sure they said the point of Conviction was to change what SC games are all about. That's why (like in 99% of Double Agent) they ditched the night vision goggles and most of the gadgets.

TBH i was never ecstatic over the decision to go down that whole crowd road, a simple Chaos theory type spy/stealth game would make me happy.
I cant think of many games that are similar to splinter cell.
Oh right, a real shortage of stealth games on the market then? Are you sure its not just because one is a PS3 exclusive and the other is an Xbox360 exclusive?
Theres a huge difference between Splinter Cell being delayed and GT5 being delayed.
Splinter Cell: Conviction hasnt been in production since before the 360 came out. It wasnt hyped to buggary for 2 years whilst being delayed constantly. It didnt have an empty, half-bottomd, payed-for demo released under the guise of 'prologue'.
It's certainly a bad thing for Sony - perhaps not 'a disaster', but certainly a ridiculous... event. With the amount of money they're pouring into it, theres no wonder they can't keep their other exclusives.
A delay is a delay though, but it seems that a delay for a game on the 360 is good because it give the developers time to get things right, while a delay on the PS3 is a bad because its typical Sony.
A delay is either good or bad whichever system its occurring on, it cant a good thing on the system you like while been a bad thing on the system you don't like, that's just hypocritical .
IMHO a delay is a good thing if it means we wont get a buggy half bottomd release.
I don't think this particular delay hits Xbox 360 owners as much as it could simply because they have plenty of other good games to tide them over in the mean time.
Like the GT 5 delay I don't think it really matters. I'd rather see a developer taking their time and getting it right rather than rush an unfinished game onto the market. There's plenty of good games coming out between now and then to compensate. After all even the mighty Halo 3 was delayed and did it no harm.

You're missing the point with GT5 though. Do you really think waiting almost 5 years for a racing game is good? (PS3 launched in Japan in November 2006 with the promise of GT5 - many sources now say it's not coming until 'at least' 2010)
Sony already proved their own 'theory' wrong when they said 'it doesnt matter if we dont have games, people will buy it because its called Playstation'. In other words - it doesnt matter that this is GT5, it aint gonna be a death blow to any other system 'just because' its GT5 - MGS4 proved that too.
You can't just rely on 2 or 3 big-name games that take 5 years to develop. That's not what people want, especially when the console costs almost twice as much as the competition which has all the same multi-platform games plus it's own exclusives which come out every other year.
No you're missing the point. Blinkered fan boys made a big deal out of GT 5 being delayed. Yet here's an Xbox game that's delayed and the same blinkered fanboys see it as good thing. There's plenty of good games coming out on both consoles to make up for it but of course the fanboys don't see it.
Im curious, I take it you don't own a PS3 so why does it bother you so much?
Not good. Despite my optimism, I've had a bad feeling about this game in the back of my mind for awhile. Every other game that has promised the kind of interactivity that Conviction was/is to have never seems to work out.
Bummer on the wait. I've been after this since last Xmas when it was supposed to come out. By the time it does come out I fear I will probably no longer care
