The Joker confirmed for Mortal Kombat

Villain of the moment to appear alongside Batman
Upset that the untimely death of Heath Ledger means you'll never see Batman battle The Joker again? Never fear, as Midway has just confirmed they'll both be playable characters in Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.

The developer confirmed four new characters at the San Diego comic con over the weekend. According to IGN, they will be Shazam, Liu Kang, the Joker, Jax, Kitana, and the Green Lantern.

Some new gameplay modes were also revealed. A close combat feature allows players to get the camera up-close to the characters and trigger some hard hitting combo moves unavailable in normal play.

Freefall mode was also demoed, where characters knocked off the edge of an arena can continue fighting in mid air as they plummet down to the floor below.

Also mentioned was the reason Superman isn't invulnerable. He's susceptible to both kryptonite and magic, apparently. Hmm.

To get a look at the game in action, take a look at the in-game footage here.

Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 was the last good MK game.

I tell a lie, Shaolin Monks was superb.

Yeesh....
Shazam is NOT a character. It's Captain Marvel. Billy Batson says the 'magic word' (yes, like Superted) Shazam, and becomes Captain Marvel. The fact the devs are referring to this character as such is concerning.

"Also mentioned was the reason Superman isn't invulnerable. He's susceptible to both kryptonite and magic, apparently. Hmm."
Superman has been vulnerable to magic for as long as I can remember.
A brief web search later:
Magic: Superman's biomatrix is his most powerful asset, but the strength of this field is also its greatest weakness. It's permeability to certain wavelengths makes Superman vulnerable to certain radiations, particularly magical energies whose chaotic electromagnetic or extradimensional signatures disrupt this forcefield. Superman's vulnerability to magic varies on the special effects of the magic. No magic seems to be able to directly destroy him unless it comes from a semi-divine or divine source. He can be injured and worn down by magical entities. Magic can have powerful and unpredictable effects on Superman and his magical enemies have often proven to be the most dangerous.

As for the Joker being in it - was anyone surprised?
Looking forward to seeing what funky s**t the Green Lantern can do. Wonder if it'll be Hal Jordan.

Think IGN needs some new staff..

Why is CVG making a big deal out of the close and falling modes? The attacker presses UP and if the opponent presses UP he'll reverse it in the falling and counter in the close, otherwise the attacker will get another hit. It sounds stupid to me.

Judging from the look of Batman, I'm guessing it's not Heath Ledgers Joker that will be appearing in the game. Shame about that & the character model of Batman. Sad Add this to the fact that there are no fatalities & it really doesn't warrant a purchase.

Shame, with the battle between 360 & PS3, a battle between SFIV & this would have been so 1991! SadCool
I thought they added fatalities. Cos I saw Scorpion burn The Flash to death in the new E3 trailer

You must be joking!

Perhaps not quite yet, as Shazam was already shown on worldscollide.com, for the DC side, and Liu Kang, on the MK side. The site hasn't updated with the comic con announced characters, yet. They (IGN) were probably none the wiser about those two, though, so I'd say your point still stands! Laughing

@ a3HeadedMonkey: In fact, there ARE fatalities. All of MK and the DC villains have fatalities. DC heroes have brutalities, instead. The characters are comic book (in fact, I remember hearing Midway say on a video interview that they were including the DC characters in their most recognisable style - though, there will be two costumes)
Machetazo on 28 Jul '08
Fatalities are in for all but the dc heroes. They get brutality's as they would never kill soomeone.
Superman for example repeatedly smashes his opponents head in so that he is buried into the ground!

did sum1 here miss E3? they showed the mid air battles and close up battles about 3 weeks ago, not to mention the "test your might" which isnt said here but till prob be brough up again in a week

the only new announcement is the charachters, and while fair play im happy about the joker, i just cant take this game seriously, having to watch Jax rip off the jokers arms and stand there will forever look wrong to me.

not only that but this is basiclly a sub version of street fighter 4 with majorly pointless mini games in the middle that just seem stupid,

press the right button at the right time to land a punch while the other player tries to press the same button to counter said move.

press all buttons as fast as you can to cause more damage while other person tries to weaken said attack

seriously just what is the point?

also theyve alreasdy shot themselves in the foot as they have already said there not adding new Characters through DLC while SF4 are (marvel anyone? i can only hope)

i had everyone in the MK series even up to armageddon, and that and deception where both awful this is the final nail in the koffin for me.

I love the look of this and can't wait for it to be released.

Between this, SF & SC, it's going to be a great couple of years for fighters. Now if only Melbourne House could release an updated 'Exploding Fist', I'd be in fighting heaven.
