Molyneux talks Fable 3, 4 and 5

"It's a big story arc." You don't say...
Fable II might still be doing the rounds in the Lionhead QA department, but it hasn't stopped Peter Molyneux from talking about three sequels.

"We've got plans for Fable 3, 4 and 5," he said in an interview with Game Trailers. "It's a big story arc and you can see that if you play Fable 2 you'll recognise things from Fable 1."

The interview must have caught the game designer in an introspective mood. "I realised during making Fable 2 what atrocious mistakes I've made in the past," he said, then added: "I don't think I was skilful enough to make Fable 1 better, but I learned so much from the mistakes in Fable 1 and that is what I'm proudest about in Fable 2."

Molyneux also spoke briefly about the top secret project being developed at Lionhead, but declined to share new details. Instead, he mentioned either making a sports game or driving game:

"I've always been fascinated by challenges and I've always said to myself that one day I should really do a sports game. Simply because it seems like a genre that's locked in stone. Same with driving games. What I want is the game I do next to be a really big challenge."

Our imagination isn't grand enough to even imagine a Molyneux devised Wii Sports. But we want it all the same.

Fable 2 - I can't wait.

Fallout 3 looks amazing, but I expect Fable 2 to surprise me in a few ways - maybe give us something that we've never had before in a game.

You have to love Molyneux - he'll never stop trying to push the boundaries and then talking it up to all the magazines....I'd welcome a Lionhead sports game!

I'm also looking forward to Fable 2 as there seems to be a massive gap in the market for a new adventure game. Problem with Molyneux though is that he does big things up a little bit too much, imo. And he has got to make sure that Fable 2 is a success before he starts waffling on about 3, 4 & 5!

Fable 2 is going to be brilliant I think, Peter will have taken on board all the criticism from the original and I really do expect him to give us a truly great game that will give the other RPG's a run for their money.

I know that Fallout has been getting incredible previews everywhere but from what ive seen so far im not really buying into it yet, there is a long way to go on that one though.

Yeah I'm not particularly sold on Fallout either. But I have a hell of a lot of respect for Peter Molyneux and despite the hype think that Fable 2 will be something very special indeed.

Give me Fallout over Fable. Fable 2 looks decent but so did the first Fable. And when I got round to playing that I was disappointed. May get it out though for another spin-give it a second chance.
almanac2015 on 29 Jul '08
I don't mind old Pete, at least he admits his mistakes. The only thing I hate is when he bigs everything up. I have to admit that I've never played the first one, I might get round to getting it one day, but I doubt it.

I can't be the only one who was hugely disappointed with Fallout 3? I've never played any of the others, so I was seriously wondering what all the fuss was about - and seeing the gameplay at E3 was such a let down.

The animations are terrible, the graphics look worse than Oblivions, the AI was appalling.. I didnt get the excitement at all. Yet everyone looked at it and thought it was amazing? Please, somebody fill me in... did I see the wrong video, or what?

Fable 2 on the other hand? GOTY material.
MrXBob on 29 Jul '08
All very well.. and as much as the prospect of more Fable games excites me, I'm still waiting for Black and White 3, 4 and 5!!
pherik on 29 Jul '08
Oh look, he's planning a story arc across several games, and he hasn't gone for the fashionable "trilogy". That is innovation!

The difference is, Oblivion (Bethesda's previous game) was fantastic and Fable 1 was, well, okay. So saying Fable 2 will be 'GOTY' is a tad ambitious. Bit like Peter, really.

when making fable, lionhead were making Black and white 2 and the movies at the same time. they admit that they were overstretched, so now they're just focusing on fable. i think it's going to be something special, simply because these are the people who brought us the theme series, and dungeon keeper, and populous, and black and white and blah di blah di blah, basically we can still trust them to make great games

Agreed there. errr well sort of. I don't think Fallout3 looks really good at all. It's especially disappointing to me after playing the first 2 games.

Also, Fable 2 looks to be just as much rubbish as the first. A second game should never have been made let alone a 3rd, 4th or 5th.

I honestly got much more play out of Fable than I ever will out of Oblivion. I'm not knocking Bethesda because Morrowind was fantastic, but Oblivion (for me) was fundamentally broken and I lost interest very, very quickly.

I realise what you are saying and hope that you are right. Unfortunately rpg's are much more time consuming to make and you have to appeal to the right demographic. I'm just worried that Fable 2 could be a little bit too lightweight for my liking. I mean, co-op in an rpg sounds great, but have they spent too much time trying to be innovative, rather than making a solid, challenging rpg? I'd rather be clobbering my way through the hordes of evil, than bitch-slapping my mates in-game wife.

EDIT: Actually, bitch-slapping my best mates wife sounds pretty good fun. Once.

Maybe I am being a little too hard on the game as it isn't even out yet, but that is because I want it to be as great as Peter M(and Peter M fans)say it will be. I'd love to be proven wrong, put it that way...

Yeah I agree, the original Fable was definitely a great little game that many seem to have overlooked mainly as it was something a bit different but it really is worth giving a go especially as you can now pick it up for well under a tenner.

Your disapointed with Fallout 3 and it's not even out yet and you haven't played Fallout 1+2? You might as well say you don't like snow because it's cold, another armchair critic/developer!

Agree. Extraordinary comments rain down from that young mans brain. It is similar to me reviewing the surface of the moon.

It's a bit rough and there's no atmosphere...

I thank you.

I'm kind of in the same boat as you. Although I still think it looks great graphically. I agree however that the game will not affect me like oblivion. I'm still finding new stuff all the time(goblin wars!!) and will continue to play until elder scrolls:5.

But yet, Fable 2 will rule over my broken xbox, oh wait... Crying or Very sad

It got shelved sadly and I may be wrong, but I think the designers left Lionhead so I don't think there's much chance of a revival.

I seriously can't wait for Fable 2.
As for comparisons with other games, Fable's more of an adventure game more than anything else, just really heavy on the RPG elements, so it's unfair to compare with stuff like Oblivion, especially when comparing game length.
As for the original, people were so let down because the game was released before it was even finished (hence the lost chapters crap). Someone already mentioned this but it was because they had multiple projects on the go and had to release before they were satisfied simply to stay in business. Now they don't have those concerns under MS's wings, hence why the game is already complete but not releasing for another 3 months.
As for Lionhead venturing into other genre's, I'd rather they didn't. You can't create a proper sports game that will sell unles you have the real world atheletes and EA basically have the licenses for that all wrapped up. I guess driving games is an option. MS could maybe let them do the next PGR?

I will tell you why you should be excited about Fallout 3. You should be excited about Fallout 3 because it's the spiritual succsessor to Oblivion and is better in every way.

1)Fallout 3s interface is a lot cleaner easier to use as demonstrated by the Pipboy 3000.
2)The graphics may not be as pretty as Oblivion's but they are waymore detailed and realistic(people don't look like they are made out of rubber), also the effects like explosions look awesome.
3)The world is going to be a lot more interesting to explore because it's more compressed than Oblivion's and therefore you will be finding cool places to explore more regularly than in Oblivion. Also there is more variety to the places you find like The Washington Monument and The White House; not just grey Forts and brown Caves over and over again.
4)The VATS system is awesome because it's what makes Fallout 3 truly feel like an RPG even though you are shooting stuff like in an FPS. Also you don't need brilliant AI like in Halo 3 or COD 4 because this is an RPG and you can't shoot for s**t without using the VATS system anyway like in an FPS.
5)The story is going to be brilliant and way better than Oblivion's(which was crap). The quests are going to be more diverse and there is more than 100 hours of this game.

Get excited. Now.

As for Fable 2 I'm actually more excited about it than Fallout 3. Fable is my favorite game after Bioshock and Fable 2 is going to be 20 times better.
Shames it's going to be so damn casual though. But to be honest I think Fallout 3 is going to get better reviews.

How is it a spiritual succesor to oblivion? Its THE successor to fallout 2, nothing to do with oblivion.

e.g.
Bioshock was the spiritual successor to system shock. It was very similar in terms of the world you were stuck in, the situations you were put in. Oblivion and fallout are both rpg's, sandbox, and nothing other than that. If anything compare it to stalker!

Oh and Ive spent several hundred hours on oblivion, and found the quests to be amazingly diverse.
And those caves you found in oblivion, if they had goblins in them, steal their totem, and that of another goblin cave, and drop both in a clearing. If fallout does anything to match what follows, I'll be impressed.
