The successor to the Nintendo Wii is already in development and being prepared, president Satoru Iwata has revealed.
"We are always preparing for the next hardware," Iwata told Forbes. "We are under development. ... But the hardware is a kind of box that consumers reluctantly buy in order to play our games."
Not at all surprising news, but what will be interesting is how Nintendo addresses the massive expectation now left by its radical transition from controller to Wii Remote. What will it do next?
"Every hardware needs some revolutionary features," says Iwata. "This time around, it happened to be we had a revolutionary user interface. Will it be the same for the next generation? I really can't tell.
"It's natural for the current customer to expect Nintendo is going to once again do something different," he continues. "If the people are expecting so many different things from Nintendo, it's going to be difficult for us to go beyond that expectation again."
By the look of its current bank balance, don't expect the Wii 2 answers any time soon.
You people sound like the next system is coming next year or something, no thanks to the misleading headlines set up as bait... If some of you actually read what was said you'll realise he's simply stating the obvious, that research and planning is happening just about constantly, they still have no idea of what it'll even be about. Do you honestly think Sony or Microsoft aren't doing any research for the future?
If all that's not enough to make you all settle down then at least have confidence in knowing that with the sales the Wii gets it'll keep being supported for several years, just look at what's become of the DS which was initially touted as a sort of experiment and not meant to replace the GameBoy series and that they would in fact release a new GameBoy in the (then) near future also. DS' popularity and sales sure changed that plan.
I wouldn't be surprised to see a future Nintendo console allowing us to stream games over the 'net (and I'm not talking about flash/java apps)... If's not the Wii's successor that introduces this ability, then I reckon it'll be the one after that.
I don't think it'll sell anything like as well as this one has been.
I think we can all agree that the majority of their sales have been to the casual family setting, and because of the unique control system. Fair enough.
But with the attach rate still fairly low, releasing a new console is only going to cause a rift, where the grandparents don't see the point in getting another box that does pretty much the same thing and the toddlers won't even understand what the upgrades are.
Backwards compatibility might save it, but that'd only restrict what developers can do with the new technology, either limiting it or forcing them to make 2 versions.

Do you actually know what the hell you're talking about? Your post is flawed on so many different levels.
In even more shock news.... Sony and Microsoft are well under way with plans and development of their next consoles.....absolute shock and horror.
I never thought I would find myself saying this, but Nintendo have lost the plot. The Wii is NOT what I expected it to be, and unfortunately it has become the casual gamers console. No matter what they say I think they easily demonstrated this at E3. Wii Music looks s**t as well. RockBand is better because you play real music rather than the silly awful sounding renditions of Nintendo game music.
Nintendo have provided as much if not more quality content than the Gamecube, they have better third party support and they're making more money.
They are successful, you idiots. If they tried to compete again they would have failed and given up, surely. It's so tragic the amount of bitching that goes on.
The Wii has so many homes it will live for a few more years yet.
The classic controller craps on the 360's and is almost as good as the PS3's Dual Shock 3. There's no doubt the PS3 is a far superior beast, but the Wii has some great exclusives that only Nintendo make. Plus of course there's the Virtual Console for some classic F-Zero, speaking of which... Pilotwings Wii and F-Zero Wii better appear Nintendo or I'll TRIPLE shock you and believe me, I now have the tools to do it with your Wiimote added to my bottomnal.
Now I have all the peripherals. Ho-ho-ho.
Long live the PS3! The Wii is a worthy addition for some of Nintendo's classics.
Microsoft I strike thee down and spit upon your gears of bore! Huuuzzzzaaah!

If you're going to disagree with someone, at least have the decency to put forward a counter-argument. If you can't or don't want to, then don't bother posting.
Console manufacturers begin planning what they'll do next almost as soon as their "new" console is on the shelf. It takes years of research and development to build a new console.
But I think Nintendo will stick with motion control and make it backwardly compatible with Wii games. 1:1 control will come as standard, as will stronger straps and cushions for the remotes. I fully expect HD output, at least at 720p, as well as a little more horse power, but not necessarily much more.
Whatever they come up with, I can't wait. They always deliver the goods, and thankfully deliver a different experience from that offered by the PS3 and 360 -- why else would anyone bother buying all 3 consoles?
I don’t care what gimmick they put on it, as long as it’s the same power as the equivalent gen machines.
It’s all about the game play but with extra power so much more can be achieved.
Nah, they wouldn't do that, because that's what everyone would expect them to do. The only predictable thing Nintendo would do is give the console a silly name and if they call it Wiitu or something like that, just think of the cereal marketing possibilities! Oh, yes and Nintendo, if you do call the new console Wiitu, just remember, I thought of it first!

The attach rate is actually very high, as can be seen by many of the games are in the Top 10! I have more Wii games than 360 games and this is the same for other people I know with both a Wii and 360/PS3. Also I would say that the majority of consoles have been purchased by current gamers rather than new gamers (although I would say a large percentage is new gamers, which is great). I was a new gamer once and it did not stop me from puchasing new computers and consoles. In fact I am not sure how I would have bought more consoles without initially purchasing the first one!
Your argument for backwards compatibility is slightly flawed as you seem to have forgoten that the PS2, PS3, Wii and 360 are all backwards compatible (at least to some extent) and it has not hampered them.
LordVonPS3ii is born.
WTF is this? I just picked up a Wii...

My god! I am stunned and pleasently surprised! However one thing I disagree with is that I think the classic controller is better than the PS3 controller too. I do however also think the 360 controller is better then the PS3 controller. In my opinion the PS controller needed an overhaul after the first one. I was very dissapointed with my PS2 dual shock. Still have no idea what the little slots on the back of the classic controller are for......
Work on the Wii began almost straight after the launch of the GameCube (at least, the planning and r&d), so excuse me if I'm not even slightly shocked that they're working on the next console... Why is this even news? I didn't see this posted as news; something I find more fascinating than Nintendo working on a successor to their console (which we all knew was coming).
commence bitchfest.
It has already begun... We are... Too late...
My cousin JUST got a Wii an hour ago!!! Oh man I can't to see the look on his face!
*Grabs camera and runs*
Okay... It is always safe to assume that developers aren't sitting complacently on their laurels (well, perhaps Sony did); they;re going to keep looking to the future...
But with the attach rate still fairly low, releasing a new console is only going to cause a rift, where the grandparents don't see the point in getting another box that does pretty much the same thing and the toddlers won't even understand what the upgrades are.
Okay, for a start, all Nintendo have confirmed is that they're working on a successor. 'Pretty much the same thing ' is a pretty bold statement to make considering we don't actually know anything concrete about the next gen (assuming we have finally started calling the 360, ps3 and Wii 'current gen') Nintendo console, except that they've commenced planning, and r&d.
Backwards compatibility might save it, but that'd only restrict what developers can do with the new technology, either limiting it or forcing them to make 2 versions.
Once again, how did we get all this from Nintendo just confirming they are working on a next gen console?

The classic controller's L+R buttons are a bit too squishy compared with the old SNES pad, plus the lowercase y,x,b,a seems a little unprofessional. Other than that I can't really complain.
I do however know exactly what the slots and the button on the top of the joypad are for. Every time you press the button, someone's XBox 360 gets the RRoD.

and a coffin is a kind of box your relatives reluctantly buy in order to bury or burn your corpse... A-men!
In other news PS3 and 360 'fanboys' make snide remarks about Nintendo to make themselves feel more positive about their 'PC consoles'! I wonder what amazing advances Sony and Microsoft will make in their next machines... whats that you say? better graphics... thought as much!

Well the Nintendo Wii is still selling phenomenally well despite being out over one and a half years now so i dont think that the supposed 'Wii 2' will be coming out soon at all. At least not until after the end of this year and probably a while after that. As for the The PS3 being the 'superior beast' i think the only way that is true is in terms of it's f***ing size being around half a metre in height. GO WII and GO NINTENDO! You own! OWNAGE!

So... your main line of argument is with the presentation of the buttons (being a, b, x and y as opposed to A, B, X and Y)? Perhaps it's not surprising that you don't like lower-case letters given you like the PLAYSTATION 3(TM) (as sony remind us is the correct way to spell it).

Just as it looked like you had climbed the ladder to sensible debate you fall off back down into fanboy hell again!
Look who's talking! Who made you the forum police Mr Wannabee Moderator? back to the school room with you, you strike happy idiot.
What do you mean? I didn't present any opinions, therefore there is no double standard. I merely stated that calling somebody an idiot and saying they are wrong is a very poor way to argue. And as for "Mr Wannabee Moderator", is it not possible to tell someone they are behaving incorrectly without being a moderator? I don't know what gives you that idea. It seems constructive criticism is unwelcome here.
I gave up doing that. I'll try to refute ignorant members posts when they finally come up with a valid argument.
If you think the posts are ignorant that's all the more reason to deconstruct them and show them to be wrong properly. That way you can teach them not to be ignorant. Just saying they are wrong achieves nothing.
IThe Wii is NOT what I expected it to be, and unfortunately it has become the casual gamers console.
Remember back in the 90's, when ALL consoles were for "casual" gamers, and the true "hardcore" gamers were those who exclusively used a PC? Good times.

Very Good Times....... aaahhhh, my amiga.........
People seems to forget vry quickly that they were at some point in time a casual gamer themselves. The many first time gamers that have bought the wii is great. Some of them will never get another console, but I would put a good bet on many going on to become more avid gamers. After all pong is one of the most casual games of all time, it only had one paddle to control it and yet it was responsible for introducing millions into gaming.

My god sir you are an idiot.
Well he's entertaining (in a way), more than can be said about most 360 fanboys.
As for those saying that the Wii has low attach rates...
Think again.
