Square-Enix yet to begin FFXIII on 360

Dev kits aren't even in the house yet...
Development on the recently-announced Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy hasn't begun, according to GameSpot.

"We haven't changed the direction of the development [of FFXIII]," said director Motomu Toriyama during Square-Enix's DK Sigma3173 event. "We're making the PS3 version first, and then porting to the 360 later."

Square-Enix made the surprise announcement at July's E3 Media and Business Summit that FFXIII would be coming to Xbox 360, launching simultaneously with the PS3 version is North America and Europe.

Square-Enix reportedly doesn't have Xbox 360 development kits yet. "I'm telling [the development team] to not think about the Xbox 360 right now. We can think about it after the development kits arrive."

Toriyama assured that the multiplatform status of the game doesn't mean the PS3 version will suffer from any spec change.

"Right now, we're fully concentrating on the PS3 version," he said.

As GameSpot notes, due to the simultaneous platform release plans for the game in North America and Europe, the PS3 version will presumably be held back until the Xbox 360 version is complete.

Square-Enix has not announced a firm U.S. release date for FFXIII.

mfnick on 4 Aug '08
Ouch, that's not good news. It doesn't really seem reasonable for S.E. to sit on the PS3 version of FFXIII just to ensure a simultaneous release for both versions.

Unless the reason for the delayed release is actually because it's going to take them a bloody long time to localize FFXIII for Western audiences long, long after the PS3 release in Japan, and the work can be done at the same time as the X360 development.

Actually, thinking about it, that's possibly a reason why there won't be any X360 version of the game in Japan, so that the native language, native platform version of the game will see release when it's ready.

Hahaha....that will certainly take away the joy in M$ camp, If I was a 360 owner I'd be pretty p**sed off right now with M$ for lieing about F13 Confused
toolfan2007 on 4 Aug '08
Hmmm...what isnt mentioned is that development of FFXIII is taking place on PC and converted to PS3.

Also th 360 port would take little time compared to porting the other way around so it makes plenty of sense.

BUT

There is noway in hell they dont have 360 dev kits somewhere in the building. Not with 3 frigging games coming out within the next six months.

i wouldve thought development would take longer with the ps3 with it being alot more advanced, theres yet to have been a FF on new genaration anyway so i dont imagine this game comin out till 2010 anyway.

just another article to rally up fanboys and keep that FF name out there to keep the hype goin for another 2 years, watch square post announcements like "breezing past on ps3" or "360 maxed out, but have everything we wanted to do on it, sorted"
mol_e on 4 Aug '08
All Sony fans can hope for is that the Japanese version has English subtitles.

Otherwise, kiss goodbye to the game until 2010 at the earliest. That's all I have to say on the subject.
Mark240473 on 4 Aug '08
GREAT.
so i now have to wait untill 2010 for this game cuz they have sudenly "decided" to make a cheap 360 knock-off!?

square have changed, theyre not the caring dev they used to be, KH2 was the last great square game and since they've turned into a money machine, pushing out half finished FF titles and lacluster new IPs.

they should stop playing around with FF7 and concentrate on getting FF13 in our consoles, and where the hell is KH3???????????????????

FF13 is the last chance for me, if it turns out to be another starwars rip-off like FF12 then to hell with them, and if you agree then heres some advice: keep a keen eye on Atlus and the Shin Megami Tensai series, they are really starting to broaden their games ^_^

FFXIII is clearly lead-designed for PS3 - I reckon the 360 game will be just a port from PS3.

And whilst FFXIII Versus remains PS3 exclusive, you'll still need PS3 for the "full experience".

Come on gamers, whats the big deal? Dont tell me you didnt expect delays and pushbacks with FF?

Square are all about money and just like Rockstar with GTA IV they want a world wide release to capitialise on the momentum the game will generate and if that means pushing back the title although one platform is well ahead of the other, then so be it.

Gamers? I dont know if I want to laugh or cry.

I don't think that you'd have had such a gracious attitude if the PS3 had delayed development for a 360 game. Anybody remember the stick Sony got for the GTA4 delay?

Twists and roundabouts.

Whats the big deal? It's not as if we were going to see the PS3 ver in europe this year or even early next year anyway.
If the Japanese get the game in say Dec08/Jan09(optamistic) were looking at Otc09/nov09 in Europe going on the 10 month wate from the Jap-Europe release of FFX & FFXII.
bizbaz45 on 4 Aug '08
In other words they are delaying the game.

Clever of Square Enix to make up a story though.

I wouldnt say gracious attitude more like realism. My most anticipated game out there at the moment is Alan Wake and with that game you kind of get used to delays, no shows and silence.

And with GTA, thats kind of what I meant, did the PS3 not hold up the release for the 360 version? Dont all attack me on that one, I cant rememeber the specifics.

A game getting pushed back or delayed isnt going to bring me out in tears though and you kind of get used to it over time, anyone thats played games for a while knows that

Still, Mondays are usually pretty quiet in the office so Ill be tuning in to see how this thread develops, it could be a long one.

I'd like to know what Alan Wakes excuse is for the delays as I too am looking forward to it. They can't blame localization on that one, can they?

I can handle delays as well, as long as something else decent comes out in the meantime. I'm covered on PS3 with Siren for the time being, but my 360 needs to shape up this year. Fable 2 and GOW2 can't come soon enough in my opinion.
Mark240473 on 4 Aug '08
Oh god..

The 360 is the easiest machine to code for, out of the two. It's being coded on PC for the PS3 first, fair enough. It will then take a far shorter amount of time to code for the 360 as the structure for the PC is fairly similar to the 360. So it won't delay it by "years". Besides, FF games always take an age to develop.

It doesn't say that in the article! You're assuming it's being developed on the PC for the PS3. It's more than likely being developed on a PS3 development kit.
I don't really see what's new here. These games can take ages to translate but there's nothing to stop Square releasing FF13 in Japan as soon as it's finished for the PS3. PS3 owners in Europe and America will either have to wait for the translated version or learn to speak Japanese and import it.

As mentioned at E3, it IS being developed on the PC, and then ported and tweaked to the respective systems.

I'm not bothered about this game, the FF series is boring great cut scenes & Character design but once the game starts they are incredibly linear & i hate RPG's with turn based combat. unless they take a more Mass effect approach i wont be following this one in the slightest.

A 'Mass Effect' approach as in frustrating gameplay? You may find my copy in a bush outside my window. For a battle-hardened hero, he is a terrible shot with a gun. My crossair was on the aliens head for sure, so why was I shooting the hell out of a table?

Terrible.

Nooooo! Mark, Mass Effect is one of the greatest games I've ever played! And certainly my game of the year for 2007.
Hollywood has a point (though I think the art direction for FF games is too feminine and bland and... manga-ish for my tastes), FF7 is truly one of my favourite RPG's, nay, favourite games of all time- and yet EVERY FF game since then (with the exception of 10, 'cos that was alright), has been truly awful. I've got 13 hours into FF12, and I don't think I can play it anymore.
Mass Effect is waaaaay ahead of anything Square has made! Now say you like it really or I'm gonna sulk. I'll frikkin' do it man! I will!

Working on the game on the PC using the new game engine.

Porting PC code over to PS3. Releasing game in Japan.

Porting game over to 360. Simultaneous western release on both consoles.

Sorry, matey. I really respect the developers, and love the KOTOR games. I just wish that they had used the same template for Mass Effect, instead of using a crappy gun mechanic. I kept getting killed through poor controls, rather than poor skill. Call me old fashioned, but I prefer the point and click system more.

It doubt the game will be delayed for years, all it is is porting from one system to another.

I'm just glad there still going to keep the PS3 quality up to maximum.

You can't really be p**sed at Square, they need the money to pay for rising develpment costs, and releasing both versions at the same time and keeping up momentum will help that. Just don't let the PS3 version suffer.

Oh come on.

Did you know there are two big FF titles in development by Square Enix?

One is the girl/emo fest Final Fantasy XIII which M$ have paid $???,???,??? for, the other is :

Final Fantsy Versus XIII.

For those that don't know, this is the one which had a trailer released with a blue haired roger walking out a doorway and being fired upon by futuristic soldiers and him shielding all the bullets with some mysterious blue power and going on to annihilate them with his weapon (don't get excited by this violence xbot fans as this game is exclusive to PS3).

So PS3 will have a major FF exclusive in FF Versus XIII regardless of when FFXIII is released.

Its outrageous. I get the feeling Microsoft know about this and have decided not to give Square Enix the kits to start developing. Then it'll be a longer wait for PS3 owners in Europe. I'm just happy that Square got to work on the PS3 without porting it from anywhere. most developers lose out when they try to copy data from one source to another.
Apollian24 on 4 Aug '08
Don't know why everyone is up in arms about this seeing as they have it running on PC already it shouldn't take long to get it on to 360 seeing as the architecture's are so similar.

I would be more worried if they said that the PS3 version hasnt been started yet.
lonewolf2002 on 4 Aug '08
Oh, because before this no FF game was ever delayed by months and months Rolling Eyes The port really won't add time to it since, as has been said its PC developed (Not a rumour, as has been pointed out multiple times). I mean christ, FF3 on the DS took 4 months to come out over here from the US. XII took about a year from its Japanese release to PAL, same with Reverent Wings. Fact is, we'd end up waiting a year from when its released in Japan no matter what happened.
Fallen_Angel1 on 4 Aug '08
I don't know why alot of people are moaning.

I imagine Square need to concentrate on the PS3 version so they can get the most out of the PS3's architecture at the time. The 360 is relatively easy to program for, so they know they can start that process, for us Europeans and the yanks, once they begin to localize and translate all the mountain of material that goes along with making a Final Fantasy game.

FF games are always released at least 6 months in the EU and NA, maybe longer for this title, after the Japanese release. So we're going to have to wait regardless. I doubt the Japanese-only PS3 version will suffer in any way.

Hmmm, it was just because of the ps3 why gta4 was delayed, the xbox 360 delayed it aswell, i remember reading an article on it somewhere, they also cut the size of the game down to suit the 360 dvd so they could fit it one disc, the ps3 version suffered in the long run coz if it remained a ps3 exclusive the enviroments would of been twice as big .

Its funny how people blame M$ for this. Are M$ developing the game? Are they publishing the game? NO. Do they have any input into how the game is developed, or when it is completed? NO. This is SE's doing. M$ may have thrown some money around, but its SE who have taken this money. Its SE who have decided how the development of the game will go, and when they will release the game. They werent forced to do anything, so if you need to take out your anger on someone, take it out on them. All M$ done was please their fanbase, something Sony seem incapable of at times.

*yawn*

360 and PS3 versions will be released simultaneously, sure M$ is to blame. It'll be delayed even more, if it was just on SE, they'd probably release EU version a year after jap like usually, now they are delayed thanks to 360...

so yea... fu*ck you M$

untwist your knickers little girl, if Square wanna make a 360 version of there game that's up to them, MS have nothing to do with it. I suggest taking up something else while you wait....like getting a life.
hollywood111 on 4 Aug '08

Its outrageous. I get the feeling Microsoft know about this and have decided not to give Square Enix the kits to start developing. Then it'll be a longer wait for PS3 owners in Europe. Microsoft are just being arrogant IMO. I don't even know how their console sells because they always seem to break down.

Lol. I think Suivaloom has just been de-throned.

Also, Mark you really should have played Mass Effect through to it's conclusion. Ignore all the side quests, the main storyline ramps up soooo well.

Oh I already hate SE for their friggin delays of EU versions. And I hate M$ for a lot of things and one of them is this.
I've added it to my list as a "#999 - Longer delay of FFXIII" on my "Why I hate Microsoft" list. Just one more and it'll be 1000 reasons! You're almost there Microsoft, don't get lazy now!

MS have nothing to do with it. I suggest taking up something else while you wait....like getting a life.

Wow THAT was original. "Get a life". Man, I wonder where you get all that creativity from. It must have taken you a long time to come up with that one.
...
Oh wait, no, I already read 'get a life' before, like, gazillions time. Hah! You almost got me there!

Though I must be pretty awesome to be able to write this post from afterlife if I don't have a life. I must've reached nirvana while I actually had a life. Wow. Or no, maybe you're just plain wrong and silly.

As GameSpot notes, due to the simultaneous platform release plans for the game in North America and Europe, the PS3 version will presumably be held back until the Xbox 360 version is complete.
Yea, I have a good reason to hate Microsoft for another thing. Sure Microsoft has nothing to do with it. Sure sure.

Boo freakin' hoo.

I couldn't say it better mate. That's exactly how I feel about these delays. I totally agree with you!

blah blah blah

Okay...lets do this...

1) The 360's RROD problem is actually incredibly overstated. The three red lights that make up the RROD can actually be down to just a game crashing due to a speck of dust on the lens. In orderfor a console to actually be RROD thepower pack light must be green. If it is red or orange then the 360 has just suffered a software crash that could easily be caused by a scratched disk or bad file save. However because of the RROD hype few people know about all this and automatically think the worse, send it for repair.

2)The actual article does not have anyone at all from sqenix stating that the development of FFXIII will take longer due to the 360. That is just the musings of whoever wrote the article. Also squareenix have SEVERAL dev kits for the 360, otherwise they are doing n awfully goodjob of releasing a number of games on the system in the next few months.

This is old news from E3, I don't know what people are crying about because they already told us this the same time they announced it for the Xbox360. They told us at E3 that they wouldn't start development of the 360 version until the Japanese Ps3 version was completed.

blah blah RROD blah blah blah M$ has nothing to do with it blah blah

It's hilarious how people can bring the RROD issue to the discussion when the one to whom they are responding didn't even mention it. Bravo, you deserve a medal. Xbox issues aren't even on my "Why I hate Microsoft" list as I don't care as I don't have one yet. When I'll have one and it'll die on me, then I'll add it to my list, till then, keep the RROD out of this.

It's starting to be kinda silly to have to repeat myself so many times.
SE didn't even start working on the 360 port.
FFXIII team doesn't have the dev kits. SE obviously have some dev kits, but the team working on FFXIII DOES NOT HAVE THEM as was stated by SE themselves.
Only translation takes SE a YEAR with their FF titles, now add to that the fact that they'll have to port FFXIII to 360 AND translate it.
So I'll say it again: FU*CK M$ for another delay of FFXIII
And the best part? Seeing you wiseasses trying to prove that MY OPINION and MY HATRED is wrong.
Just hilarious.

You know what's even better? My opinion has the same weight as yours! HA!
You gotta love internet and opinions.

Oh yea I almost forgot. FU*CK YOU MICROSOFT!

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to spit on some Microsoft logo.

Why all the confusion about the development platform?

Do people think PS3 games are developed on the PS3 and 360 games are developed on the 360? Shocked

As far as I'm aware PS3 development is done with Linux PCs running gcc compiler (IBM/Sony patched Cell support into the Linux kernel and gcc ages ago). gcc can cross compile code, i.e. compiling on PC for a completely different platform. There are bound be be some Windows/Mac PCs in there somewhere as well.

360 development is done on Windows PCs with the usual MS development tools.

Developers do not work on machines with 512/256MB of memory. They're probably be using hefty multi-core workstations with at least 4Gb of RAM.

Sony need to stop giving away their exclusives. Had there been more than just Resistance 2 on my wanted list I probably wouldn't have px/ed my PS3 for a 360!
