Nintendo out of original Wii ideas, says Iwata

Wii Music was the last one it had...
Satoru Iwata has said that the company has now used all the ideas in the proposal pipeline for Wii with the development of Wii Music.

"Wii Music completes what Miyamoto wrote in his proposal when he came up with the idea for the Wii," he told the Wall Street Journal. "He was saying that he needs to think up more ideas now."

The steady amount of new peripherals is set to dry up too. "Most of the ideas for accessories that we had initially come up with are out now.

"We might think up some more, and we might make them if we do, but we don't have any plans to release a whole lot more."

That is of course, only if Miyamoto's next big idea doesn't require one. We're also holding out for a proper Wii Remote joystick for whenever Star Fox rears its welcome head.

I can think of a few good ideas...

He was going to run out of ideas in the end but there are so many on the market being under used so maybe it is a good thing. We need more than 4 games that use the Zapper and 2 for the Board so more games should be made that use them.
G_R7 on 4 Aug '08
Good, now they can start coming out with some great games that properly utilises the Wiimote and Nunchuck + remote add on along with the Zapper and Balance Board, enough' s enough now!

Nice article title.

Yep, and Zapper games that properly utilise it. As much as I enjoy a good blast on RE Umbrella Chronicles the implementation isn't great.

Also where's my Pikmin Iwata?

Guess that means Wii 2 will become a bigger priority for Nintendo. The geezer said they're not bothered about releasing new hardware while they can still surprise people with current hardware...
Mogs on 4 Aug '08
here's an idea. start making games that we have all been waiting ages for.

here's an idea. start making games that we have all been waiting ages for.

Yeah, that really puzzles me.

Same with the Dreamcast (Gone but never forgotten) I could never understand what Sega were doing with their incredible back catalogue of games, they released some right dreck. Then they 'downshift' and bang! Panzer dragoon, Jet Set Radio 2 etc. weird...

In other news Nintendo anouncess 'Yet Even More Brain Training' for the DS.
Chrisordie on 4 Aug '08
Wow.. I'm actually shocked that Nintendo managed to show less innovation with the Wii than they did with the Gamecube..

If all we get now are sequels to existing franchises, I'll be sorely disappointed. (I'll still end up buying them though Sad )

I can think of a good idea, I call it WiiBay.

Basically, you take your Wii, put it back in the box, stick it on a popular auction website and then flog it for more than you paid for it to some idiot who still thinks they're really hard to find in shops (Clue: Look in 'unusual' shops, like Game and GameStation Rolling Eyes )

Then you go out and buy a PS3 or an Xbox 360. Or an Xbox, or a PS2, or a Dreamcast, or a DS, or a PSP. Or an N64. Anything as long as it isn't a Wii!

Personally, I think that's a great idea for something to do with the Wii.
The_Johnson on 4 Aug '08
New Ideas != Good games. Just because something's completely left field doesn't mean that it's good. Yeah, market stagnation and all that; but Nintendo's aim should be what's fun, not how unqiue it necessarily is. If it fulfils both categories, great, but they're focusing too much on being 'different'.
BrettJay on 4 Aug '08
Didn't anyone at Nintendo have an inkling of the potential of downloadable content for the Wii and that it would require a "revolutionary" storage solution i.e. A hard drive Razz

Guess they were too busing inventing the Wii:Wheel to be concerned with "little" things like that... Shocked

I find it amusing Nintendo are looking into holographic storge technology - guess the Wii 2 is all set then! Rolling Eyes

Godam it The_Johnson i think your onto something there. How about we support devs on this side of the world and let the Asians keep their brightly colored rabbits and happy go lucky wolrds

He's ran out of genius? Good...so it was his idea that the Wii has about 20 peripherals, 15 of which are pretty useless...
How about they just make a good hardcore game...new. Not casual.

Mad World might fill that brief when it eventually surfaces (although that isn't Nintendo).

Fatal Frame 4....yep another non-nintendo game.

I'm getting a lot of mixed messages from Nintendo at the moment. Basically their entire E3 Press Conference consisted of Reggie telling us about how the Wii isn't a fad and will have a long console lifespan. Now we have Iwata saying within that they have not only ran out of ideas for the Wii, but that the Wii 2 is in development.

I'm not sure if NoA are even kept in the loop anymore. Rolling Eyes
Flaming Scotsman on 4 Aug '08
As if we didn't know they were out of ideas when they showed wii-music at E3. At last they're admitting it though.

1 more revolutionary peripheral would be good though, a frikking drive to download DLC would be nice! Nintediots.
spam23 on 4 Aug '08
See, I'd like it now if they went back and used all of the new tech to actually make old-style games more interactive.

Previous Ninty consoles have good games that would be amazing with motion controls or the balance board (we're still looking for 1080 aren't we?).

I don't class Wii Music as original, I class it as a simplification of what's already out there in GH and RB. And it's a horrible version too.

So my advice would be give up tryign to think up totally new stuff and use what you have to make old stuff better.

I've previously tried to do the same thing with a PS3, but -Oh No!- Nobody wants one, and i can't lift it in order to put it in the box, and even then it wouldn't fit out of the doors.

Yea, there is a shortage in demand for PS3's with "PS3 SUXXXXX. NINTENDO RULEZZZ" scratched into it's shiny casing.

I managed it just fine - Ł310 for mine so happy days!

(Though I will admit it cost me Ł20 in postage due to it's bloody weight!)

Mad World might fill that brief when it eventually surfaces (although that isn't Nintendo).

Fatal Frame 4....yep another non-nintendo game.

Fatal Frame 4 is more or less Nintendo, they're funding/publishing it anyway, some claim they even bought the rights to the series...
Anyway, here's my list of anticipated hardcore games.

The headline is, again, misleading bait. When the Wii was proposed he apparently came up with example games for their new market, Wii Sports, Wii Fit, Wii Music, whatever else he proposed. They're just about done with what he initially proposed is what the quote clearly states, nothing about running out of ideas. This is borderline sycophantic, worse than tabloids.
Al3x on 4 Aug '08
I'm still waiting for a game that makes you use two remotes instead of one with a nunchuck. What would be possible using two wii-motion enhanced wii remotes and a balance board. You could dual wield a gun and a sword and move with the balance board! There you go Iwata, you can have that idea for free!

Wario Shake? De Blob? Hardcore?
starvinbull on 4 Aug '08
Yes, just like Mad World or Super Mario Galaxy they will offer meaty gameplay experiences, not a party game shallowfest. If you can't see that then you must be one of those people who have been blaming Nintendo over being kiddy in the past decades... Let's just agree to disagree if that's the case. If it's not, then great and I'm sorry if I offended.

To me, Wario's game looks every bit as good as Yoshi's Story, even using some of the same mechanics (like object throwing). Wario has always been Mario's rival not just story wise but also in the quality of his platforming endeavours, he's the protagonist in some of the best GB and GBA titles. Having the potential to appeal to casuals because they don't include blood, guts and boobs (heck, that stuff was made for casuals back in the day) or because they can provide instant gratification with fun mechanics means nothing if there's more to the game than that.

And hey, at least you find fault with only two of the 20+ mentioned titles... I think some subjectivism is involved in any list so that's a good ratio, no?
Al3x on 4 Aug '08
This is not particularly good journalism on the part of CVG. It might be a good idea to read the article at the WSJ to get a better idea of what he said in context. This does not mean no more good ideas for Wii, or that Nintendo are going to bring out Wii 2 soon. It simply means that all of Shigsy's ideas from way back when the were developing ideas have all been done. Try not to read anything into that.
Garcian on 4 Aug '08

Disney's wall.e was the last of the pixar titles discussed originally as well (they were all proposed at once in a meeting)

Incredibly rich minds think alike.

It's true- they can now build titles around the completed (or so it seems) peripherals set.
