Watchdog calls for MadWorld ban

Sega's "unsavoury" fighter will "spoil" Wii, says Mediawatch-UK
Platinum Games' brutal black and white brawler, MadWorld, has come under fire from watchdog pressure groups, who are calling on the title to be banned.

John Beyer, director of Mediawatch-uk, said: "I hope the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) will view this with concern and decide it should not be granted a classification," essentially making it illegal to sell the title in UK.

"Without that it cannot be marketed in Britain," he added. "What the rest of world does is up to them. We need to ensure that modern and civilized values take priority rather than killing and maiming people."

Or maybe the game could come with a family-friendly mode which swaps the blood for fairy dust and has Jack beat his enemies down with bread sticks and balloons.

"It seems a shame that the game's manufacturer have decided to exclusively release this game on the Wii. I believe it will spoil the family fun image of the Wii," Bayer said in the report from Daily Mail (no surprises here).

Nintendo commented: "Mad World will be suitably age rated through the appropriate legal channels and thus only available to an audience above the age rating it is given."

You can see trailers of people getting mauled, sliced and batted into giant dart boards here. It's hilarious.

They've heard of the ratings system, right?

They're aware of titles like The Godfather and Brothers in Arms and Call of Duty, right?

They're aware that people OTHER than the f*cking-happy-happy-let's-all-jump-around-our-living-room-like-idiots people play the console, right?

Well we do. Now get out of my sight.
Dajmin on 12 Aug '08
They should make it for the 360/PS3. That would be awesome.
gazza_be on 12 Aug '08
Yeah, I pretty agree with the above. Sillyness.
RumbleThunder on 12 Aug '08
If they take that attitude, is this game going to 'spoil the Wii' any more than Resident Evil 4 already did??? Confused
cjw101 on 12 Aug '08
They think it will spoil Wii, the rest of us think it will actually improve the bloody thing..
The_Johnson on 12 Aug '08
here we f**king go again, manhunt 2 all over again.
Sinthetic on 12 Aug '08

BenJy! on 12 Aug '08
Screw watchdog I say.

The Wii is designed to appeal to everyone and already has a plethora of violent games. There is no feasible reason as to why this game should be banned.
Biggwedge on 12 Aug '08
This is what happens when a person expresses there opinion on a matter they know nothing about. They are made to look like a fool.

It is such a pity that they are not worried about society in general but look to games to shoulder the blame of how fecked up it all is.

Considering the revenue that the Government must make from games and all its sidelines, you would think they would want to help not hinder.

The general public (Daily Mail readers) have to face facts, the gaming industry is the largest and most succesful medium out there, it generates more money than books; films or music and in Scotland we have a wee company called Rockstar North, are these guys given the keys to the city? No, they are nearly chased out the country.

There is a lot of learninig that has to be done but I dont see people wanting to learn.

Sorry. Rant over.

Blumiere on 12 Aug '08
Yeah right, in the Daily Mail?

The same Daily Mail that continually supports the maiming and bombing of innocent civilians in Afghanistan and Iraq?

The same paper that now wants us to all go and fight Russia?

But they're worried about 'violence' in Madworld?

Crazy.
fanboy on 12 Aug '08
For god sake these stories do my head in. Games are RATED if a kids found playing it its the parents fault for buying them it!
Stop tarring the Wii withe the "Family Friendly" console. Any console can be family friendly if you turn the parental controls on!!!
Mightyjinjo on 12 Aug '08
I feel gutted, and i ain't even got a Wii. Evil or Very Mad

Rolling Eyes What a complete & utter t**t. Rolling Eyes Most Wii owners would like more of these sort of games as opposed to all the mini-game crap.

As other people have said, what about the other violent games on the Wii, did they effect "the family fun image of the Wii?" Rolling Eyes

Why won't these people just shut up & go away?... ConfusedIdea

Guys and gals, if MadWorld is banned, lets burn down BBFC HQ and the Daily Mail as well. Razz

Bahahaha, it's all the same with freaking Nintendo platforms. Wasn't the Mortal Kombat blood taken out on the SNES? Didn't the Gamecube get its kiddy reputation for all the cartoon games?

SPOIL THE DAMN CONSOLE

For god's sake, tons of people are migrating away from Nintendo because it's all too cute or unfulfilling. Twilight Princess was the last good Nintendo moment, now my Wii is back in the box as my hulking PS3 takes up it's place as my main console.

Jesus christ, when one 3rd party tries to break the trend of cash cow mini game cr*p then somebody stands up and says "Get the hell back in line"

I blame it on the hippies...

Not that I would support such action, but why did you have a "if MadWorld is banned" at the start?

sh!t. another decent wii game bites the dust in the uk,as someone else said it stinks of the manhunt 2 scenario. it'll be censored,at best, making it pointless (what if they remove the blood?)

nintendo REALLY need to re-instate freeloader support so free-minded adults can have a choice.

I'll drink to that! Lets hope it does and then maybe sales will improve in the over 18's non-family market and so that the Wii will have games the XBox Gamers may want to have a go on.

to be honest mate, i've not updated my wii beyond version 3.0 so i can play u.s games on my uk wii. i use my girlfriends updated wii to play wiiware games etc. seems like the only way to get blood.

"What the rest of world does is up to them. We need to ensure that modern and civilized values take priority rather than killing and maiming people."

What annoys me greatly about this (and the c**t from hell who wrote it) is that theres an underlying theme that we have little to no free choice (as adults) on what to buy. There are a lot of 18+ gamers who own a wii and are no doubt looking forward to this yet these people think they HAVE THE RIGHT to decide what is good & what is not good for us.

If they ban it, i say riot!

i've done the same thing myself.

i don't know if a game will turn up with a forced update or not though which would snooker me.

thinking on,it's only the daily mail. it's not exactly the most 'balanced' paper on a good day and as long as it's (madworld) still on for release i'll take their scaremongering with a pinch of salt.
ste hicky on 12 Aug '08
Someone's already said it, this is what happens when someone decides to talk about something they obviously know nothing about.
At the end of the day, all that comes of this is the writers face going bright red due to their stupidity and the developers getting some free marketing for a game many of us most likley haven't heard of until now.

To be fair, the game looks s**te anyway. Look at the whole Manhunt 2 thing, I've played it and it's utter garbage. After all that fuss.

No doubt the Daily Fail blame games for the death of Diana.

As for Media Watch Uk it may sound important but it's only Mary Whitehouses lot under a different name.
zm73 on 12 Aug '08
The UK makes itself look stupid once again. I hate this f***inh country. Go deal with real problems instead of trying to have a game banned. Seriously, this country is going down the pan and they'r still chasing this dead 'belief' that violent games ruin people. All the scum of London killing teenagers has nothing to do with games. There's huge problem there, go sort that out

Neither have I mate. I've even gone and taken the Wii completely offline just in case somebody inadvertently tries to update the thing. The console really should have been region free from the start. Currently playing the new Fatal Frame. Now that's a game worth playing!
potnoodle1 on 12 Aug '08
Crikey, seems like everyone has the same opinion here. OK, well in the interest of balance I have to say that when I read this article I wasn't surprised. When I first saw the trailer from E3 it did occur to me that this was particularly graphic and perhaps the most controversial point was the sports-style voiceover.

I'm not saying that I think it should be banned. I am however recognising that in my experience this is pretty close to previous boundaries. As such I think it's proper that we should be discussing where the line should be - unless everyone thinks there should be no boundary (which would be quite unusual).
vladimir_imp on 12 Aug '08
no no no, this is precisely the thing that will save the wii from the causal market adn place it in good stead with normal gamers, people who push for better games

when has the daily mail EVER been right?

and
the family fun image of the wii needs to go anyway. its time there were less sherbert hyped toddlers and grannies on the wii, and more gamers. dont get me wrong the wiis large appeal is cool but it would be nice if nintendo took a lil step back towards their snes days

I like this news.

Mad World doesn't exactly have the highest profile around at the moment so maybe this gamer-baiting crap will help sell a few more and lead to a Mad World 2.

Maybe they should have given Amaterasu the ability to tear out the Imps' throats (they let him pee on them after all) and give that bird with the jiggly boobs a good seeing to then that might have courted controversy and made Okami a bigger hit.
philgreaaaaaaaat on 13 Aug '08

Sorry real gamers who own a Wii but it's too late the casual crowd own the Wii now. Hence I don't anymore, as for the credibility of any tabloid, well there is none.

Um, no. Sales of almost a million a month would suggest otherwise. I'm only basing this sentence on fact though.
Its a shame, but a lot of people on this forum are taking the Daily Fail far too seriously. Nintendo have already said it'll be released with an appropriate age classification.

oh and er... bumwilliepoo.

nintendo REALLY need to re-instate freeloader support so free-minded adults can have a choice.

Damn straight they should! - I brought a copy of No More Heroes back from the US but can't play it. It's a little odd that they mind people using it, considering it does not give you the opportunity to pirate games - just region crack them, surely that's not that big a deal?. Admittedly, I already knew that the Freeloader was rendered useless, but I figured that there may be other options in the future to region crack it and the game cost me hardly anything (about Ł7). So, it's sitting on the shelf useless....does have a much nicer cover than the UK one, though Wink

On topic - this is great free publicity for them. At the end of the day, what this guy thinks of the game will mean absolutely nothing - it will be rated in the normal way and released with an age restriction. His opinion on what the Wii is, or should be, is totally irrelevant.

Smile

Dunno, but Jake Gyllenhall might....

Here we go again. Yet another opinion by a so called 'expert' who doesn't play games making the round. Doesn't the Wii already have games like Scarface and The Godfather, both of which are pretty violent?

What difference is this particular game to those already out?

I, for one, would welcome more of these games being released. They make a nice change from the barreloads of shovelware and platformers being released on the system.

Another piece of well-investigated journalism from that last bastion of truth and integrity, the Daily Mail. Thanks guys. Where would the UK be without your ever-shining moral-lantern to lead us through the dark undergrowth of this confusing, and therefore terrifying, modern world?
kilic on 13 Aug '08
FFS. Just because they don't like it, they feel its fine just to ban it? Just don't play it and do something meaningful with your life. These people make me physically ill.

Just like bigwedge said, the Wii is supposed to be for everyone, and that includes people who enjoy violence, not just people that think they're "playing" a game by waving the Remote like a spaz. There needs to be games for adults.

I'm not one to enjoy a game JUST because there's violence in it but the Wii needs it, not just to cater for hardcore but to offer something truly unique, and to stop me from going mad at all the shovelware thats on Wii at the moment.

If it does end up getting banned, then I give up on Wii, for this year at least. These people don't realise that I'll turn out more violent by NOT playing this game.
ReeceH on 13 Aug '08
I'm suprised John Beyer's even heard of the Wii, he probably read about it in Readers Digest! His usual response to anything that he doesn't like is to ban it, but that's nothing unusual from someone who's basically a human cardigan with warm cocoa for blood, try clicking the link without laughing (and he probably likes Last Of The Sumer Wine Too)!

man how are you finding playing it with all that japanese text? the videos i've seen are immense.

I'm learning Japanese at the moment so I'm pulling along okay. Can normally understand enough of the spoken stuff to figure out what is going on, and as long as there isn't too much kanji in the letters and other assortments you have to read along way, I can usually manage. The game as a whole though is pretty damn good. Every bit as scary as the past games.

There is a slightly different play mechanic for the male lead, who uses a torch to attack the ghosts rather than the good old camera. All in all, I'm loving it so far. Probably the best game I've bought for the Wii.

The Wii controls are a bit dire though. You don't aim the remote at the screen, you just tilt it along the vertical axis to look up and down while you use the nunchuck for forward back left and right. Suppose it was the only way the could really map the old controls to the Wii.

There is a neat little touch used for the remote though. Occasionally when walking about you'll hear a phone ring. When you pick it up, the voice you hear comes out of the speaker on the remote, so you have to hold it up to your ear like a phone. It's a neat little touch, except the speaker is of such low quality that it's hard to make out what is being said.

If and when an English version comes out, this will be one to pick up!
