Nintendo stubs Wii hard drive rumours

"We have not announced or revealed any hard drive"
It will come as little surprise that the so-called "first pics" of the Wii Hard Drive that surfaced this morning are totally fake. All you had to do was look at it.

It was obvious, not least because tacky-looking the device supposedly revealed by Nintendo of Japan looks more like a cheap air-con unit.

But in case you had any doubt, Nintendo has confirmed to CVG: "We have not announced or revealed any hard drive", deeming any hard drive related report to be pure "rumour and speculation".

And if that device is a hard drive that can be used with Wii, that's nothing new as the Wii can already use external hard drives to store files in much the same way it uses SD Cards. But files need to be copied back onto the Wii's internal memory before use.

For now, you'll have to make do with the internal 512MB storage. Tough, we know. See the device from the now-removed NeoCrisis report below.

Bloody hell nintendo this is not why I play games for but when I see people falling off the track only to then fall back on in front of me or people to sit by the start finish line for two laps then just drive across it on lap three to win

Now I know its just not nintendo but also sony and M$ but come on this WAS my fav game since the snes

Rant over with you may mock me below nintendo fanboys

Is there no way at all that Nintendo could actually make use of it's 2GB SD Card Slot??????
It reads MP3 files in games like Excite Truck and Endless Ocean, so why can't it read other information directly?

Is there also no feasible way of storing downloadable content to SD (for example Guitar Hero/Rock Band tracks) and the game accessing these in the same way as MP3 files?????

It just seems that we have a extra 2GB of memory available to us but it is completely obsolete! What a waste of time even implementing the SD slot if it serves no purpose other than viewing photos and occasional MP3 access via a couple of games!

So dispite it looking like a 50's Air con unit, more buttons than a telephone switchboard and no Wii/Nintendo branding at all - CVG called Nintendo to confirm if it was real or not?

p.s. Online gaming? isn't this a thread about a possible Wii Harddrive?

Notice that they said that they haven't announced or revealed a hard-drive? They didn't deny that one existed somewhere...

And since when can the Wii use external hard-drives? I wasn't aware of this.
AlbertStoots on 13 Aug '08
just give us a hard drive for f**ks sake, loads will buy it,and do away with this bulls**t of copying data back on to wii's memory from sd and erasing off wii data if you run out of wii memory, why cant wii just read sd memory without this copying back on to wii s**t.like the way on 360 you get an option of which memory you want to use like memory card or hard drive, why cant we have this simple option on wii???its nothing even got to do with power, its arkwardness on nintendos behalf if you ask me.

The abomination in the pics made me smile at least.

They really need to get a cheap hard-drive out, they're just doing their reputation harm and missing out on a lot of sales by ignoring the matter.

Thats what I first thought too. Nintendo would never dodge a rumour like that. If a hard-drive wasn't in existance then Nintendo would of refuted the claim instead of saying that they haven't announced or revealed a HD. Odd I think Confused

We have more than 2GB of memory available, As stated in the news article, you could connect a 500GB USB hard drive if you like, and you could store as many games as you like on there, only problem is that you would have to keep transfering games to and from the internal memory to play them.
Also you cant download content such as GH tracks onto it. A simple firware patch would fix this, but then Nintendo wouldnt be able to rip us of by releasing an official Wii HDD that we must buy

I believe the Wii supports up to 8GB SD cards, but I agree with you. It is possible -- Smash Bros Brawl allows use of the SD card to save levels built in the creator, so there doesn't seem to be any reason it can't access the SD card for downladed games, etc. The only problem would be channels, but they could add an "SD Card" channel, allowing you to access a second set of windows that adds as many pages as needed to view all your games (using a similar structure for a hard drive).

It's not difficult, Nintendo. If Sony can partially redeem themselves by allowing you to upgrade your internal HDD without having to spend a stupid amount of money on an official drive (Microsoft take note), then surely Nintendo can overcome this minor stumbling block.

Now, about the lack off copies of Wii Fit in shops.... pull your damn finger out, Ninty!

Nintendo are taking their time because if they released a patch that can be hacked easily, the money they get from wii ware and virtual console would dry up over night. ( Connect hard drive to pc, copy files over to mates hard drive- hey presto!) Of course that all depends on how easy it is to hack.

Well I don't want a bulky external HDD connected to my Wii that is almost as large as the console itself; I'd rather Nintendo revised the firmware so that games can run from SD cards. It's a much tidier and cheaper solution, I'm sure many people will agree. I don't see that 99% of Wii owners will ever need 40/60 GB of storage space, just a few more GB, perhaps no more than 4 GB on top of the 512 MB of internal memory.

I already own a 2 GB SD card but got so fed up of copying/deleting files to and from it that I stopped buying VC and WiiWare games months ago (late last year in fact). Until Nintendo address this obvious oversight then that's how it'll stay I'm afraid. It should have been dealth with months ago IMO, it was pretty obvious that 512 MB was never going to be enough for VC/WiiWare downloads and game content. Well obvious to everyone except Nintendo! I have given up on the Wii hard drive we won't get one and in the end that is okay for me since all I have to do is delete a game and add the one that I want to play and when I want to play that game I deleted again I just have to download it again and at least the flash Memory is big enough to have at least a few Wiiware games on and the fact that we can just put our games on SD cards to store when we want to play something again without having to wait for it to download is better still.

So its not the be all and end all really your just going to have to juggle those games around a bit more.
