The Wii games library is becoming flooded with "crap", Sega president Simon Jeffery has warned, adding that the console is a "great opportunity" for hitting hardcore gamers.
The Sega of America boss said that the wave of poor quality games on Wii will die down "as publishers become more coherent."
"The Wii is a very cost effective platform to experiment with," he said. "There is a lot of crap coming out for the Wii in general.
"If it's not a good game, it doesn't sell. That flood of crap will die down as publishers become more coherent," he added, speaking to Venture Beat.
Sega has been one of the Wii's biggest third-party success stories, albeit with the help of a Nintendo mascot; Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games is expected to clear 7 million units this year.
Jeffery feels that the Wii's current library doesn't satisfy hardcore gamers, but reckons that Platinum Games' super-violent MadWorld will fill some of the void.
"The Wii is a great opportunity for hitting hardcore gamers," he said. "No one is doing that. With MadWorld from Platinum Games, we are trying to show that millions of Wii gamers want to move on to mature games. They don't have to have an Xbox 360 to do that."
Letme guess Mr Jeffery, your favourite past-time is stating the obvious?
Of course the Wii is flooded with crap. My missus wanted to buy some random, crappy looking game that I'd never heard of before when we went into Gamestation the other day. Game never heard of + missus wanting to buy it = Game that will be s**t. Simple maths Watson. Without me there to stop her she would have added to the deluge of idiots (she's an idiot) that buy into s**t because "The screenshots looks good on the back of the case".
There was a complete flooding of crap on the PS2 as well, which as it stands, is the best selling console to date.
Go figure that one out SEGA. I honestly can't see the crap games dying down until very late in the consoles life. The crap games worked out in Sony's favour, why can't they do so for the Wii?
It's just that the casual gamer will buy these crap games, thinking that they are good, because of the platform that they are on and the consoles success.
He's right of course, but its not a new thing. The dominant platform always has loads of utter garbage in its library of games. Take your pick from any of the market leaders over the years.

What about the PS3? Are you 'forgetting' about that just like your long lost SEGA room?
If a game is crap then it's crap, it shouldn't matter whether its hardcore or casual, you can't say all casual games are crap. btw the Wii versions of Ironman and the Incrdible Hulk say hello, Sega.
Strange, I've been talking about that since the console released. And I've repeatedly been proven right.
Case in point: Ninjabread Man. Someone in my family bought me the PC version as a p**s-take. I never installed it because I have principles But I read the reviews and sensibly never touched it.
Next thing I know, the Wii is getting a port. Shock.
They release crap because even if only 1% of Wii owners buy a copy, that's a massive profit for no effort. There's just no way to stop it.
Yay about time someone big in the games industry stated the obious, its just a shame none of them have the guts to name and shame the lazy companies responsible!
...then again who wanted to drink from the Dreamcast river when the rotting carcasses of the Saturn, 32x and Sega CD were fouling it not too far upstream...

You can't put him in the same light as an analyst. He's just making a comment, not making a prediction or anything.

Haven't you heard the new fad memo? Games don't sell on ps3 for third party games.
Anyway, I couldn't care any less than I do right now about what sega say. The day they neglected to continue the Shenmue saga, I stopped giving a shit.
...then again who wanted to drink from the Dreamcast river when the rotting carcasses of the Saturn,
Take that back or i'll kill the cute little kitteh
It was though, I'm not knocking the system as such just the way they handled it. It died, it decayed, it should have flourished.....I'll live a hundred lifetimes before I can wrap my head around what those guys did.

they relied on previous greatness and didn't realise that everyone was worshipping at the great altar of sony. plus they released it too early.
He's right though more decent hardcore titles are needed, I'm really enjoying Resi 4 on the Wii as an example, and it's the first game I've really loved on the Wii.

get Okami, that's about as hardcore game-where-you-play-a-god-as-a-wolf-with-a-flea-on-your-head-and-you-pee-on-baddies-to-get-points-cos-points-make-prizes as you can get.

I miss the Seal of Quality.
ive never played it but, think the name is genuis.

I hope that you are not saying that the Saturn was crap, because if you are you are hugely wrong.
NiGHTS Burning Rangers Panzer Dragoon Saga Dragon Force Death Tank 10 player Bomberman The list goes on...

Yes it is. I love puns, but it wasn't enough to convince me to install it
Roland, I thought you were making a joke about the Seal of Quality being a game, rather than certification of quality.
That would be awesome - a game called Seal of Quality, where you control a seal... but not just any old seal, a seal who is REALLY really good at everything.
Sega should know a crap title when they see one, or make one. I actually avoid Sega games as I know they will be lacking in several areas. I don't understand how they can get out of the hardware business and focus all their attention on developing and suck worse.
It's like taking the girlfriend into the local video store, and letting her pick the movie. You know she'll pick some crappy, low budget rubbish you've never heard of, just because she likes the cover(as it reminds her of the cover of some big budget movie, like Titanic).

Two words: Sammy merger! (...it was all downhill after that...sigh)

Yes, a Seal - who's really good at everything - and is coloured..... ? Navy.
Somehow I'm thinking a 2D platformer. It could be on the Wii, and then you could 'waggle' a Navy Seal.

With Regards To Potty-Mouthed Sega-Man I'd say Ninty have risen to the top on that very "flood of crap". But that would either be being; a) cynical, or b) wrong-ish.
Frankly , I still don't know how the Wii's sold so well. There's the whole 'not paying attention to what the customer wants' thing that Sony did, though their brand name got them back to healthy sales figures. As for the 360? I think the fact that it wasn't made by Sony - and broke a lot.. - hit its figures, but in my world it was never EVER going to win out in the console war.

Virtua Fighter 5 lacks in no areas and is the pinnacle of modern beat em ups. Virtua Tennis 3 is a highly rated fantastic tennis sim. Sega Rally (nu 1) is as fresh as a daisy(got good reviews as well) All thoroughly decent, and not worth missing. (made by SEGA recently as well...)
It is strange that Sega decided to axe their new racing wing. Considering it had put out one of their strongest titles in recent times.
Virtua Fighter and Tennis are near shoe-ins for good gaming experiences. Especially the former. But I think when you look at those titles it also shows that Sega have been lacking ambition with new exciting IPs.
Shenmue still perplexes me. I feel they could guarantee sales with a release now. Maybe actually put it out as a heavily enhanced trilogy. It is not the ambitious and overly expensive risk as it was back in the Dreamcast days.
