Hidden at the end of a press release for Microsoft's impressive holiday line-up is word that there'll be news on the GTA IV DLC this autumn. That's 'news' and not a release date.
Whether that means we can expect a release around then or later in the year (dare we mention '09?) we still don't know.
Microsoft says: "In autumn there will be news from Liberty City; the first episodes of GTA IV will be available for download exclusively on Xbox Live, underlining Xbox 360's leadership role in the field of digital entertainment."
I know there's a lot of 360 owners that probably couldn't care less by now, but I'm still looking forward to this - really keen to find out exactly what form it's going to take.
I really hope they don't disappoint me and it turns out to be a few more generic missions, characters and weapons added to the main story.

I can understand a few being ever so slightly disappointed by it - I personally don't think it was as good in some ways as Vice City (my favourite version so far), but I don't understand the sheer hatred it gets.

As good as GTA IV is, once you've finished the story mode there isn't a lot more to do and the large map seems very empty. Suspiciously empty; there are large parts of the map that serve only as multi-player arenas and are all but redundant for the single player game. I suspect that any DLC will merely tack a few need characters and places into those parts of the game and give you a new set of missions probably with a different character.
It will have to be something pretty spectacular to push GTA IV back into the limelight as I, and I would guess most people, are more interested in when GTA IV: Vice City is going to revealed.

I thought the controls were much better in GTA4 than the previous versions. And I've really enjoyed the multiplayer. I got a 360 when it came out and I've played it online way more than anything else. I will wait and see what the reviews say, but it will probably be the first DLC I have bought.
I can understand Sony fans being a little p**sed at not getting the DLC yet, but we'll see if it was 50m well spent by MS when we see the download figures for the DLC. Because I don't think it was the incentive to buy the 360 version MS thought it would be.
I may be wrong, but didn't Sony pay for a period of console exclusivity in the previous generation? Probably not the mad figures MS paid, but then it wasn't worth as much five years ago. PS3 owners will just get all the DLC later for less money, and if people hate GTA4 so much then it's not really an issue is it?

I love the game and getting really into it. I like to take my time in GTA and try lots of things. I have been playing 20 plus hours now and not even got off the first Islands. I am a detail freak and I don’t just go through the missions one by one, im looking for 100% like in San An. I love to explore and find things, even if just something amusing like tramps sheltering from a storm in a doorway.
As for the DLC though, im still very skeptical about it. First of all, it has to be worth the money they are asking for it. Secondly, I think it will only be exclusive till after Christmas at some point. I also wonder if the PC version will come already with the DLC when it comes out?
A few missions or weapons would only be worth a few quid for me and even then, I probably wouldn’t get it!!

Oh it isn't half the game san an was? Well San An was the 3rd iteration of GTA III. Using the same game engine, being made for the same machines. GTA IV is more like GTA III. It's the first attempt with next gen systems using a brand new engine that they had to build. It, like GTA III is more bare bones, not many bells and whistles.
Oh and the people who made Rockstar what they are would be Sam Houser and company. First of all the series got it's start on the PC long ago. Second, it's not like the guys at Rockstar were waiting around for an invite from Sony. Rockstar chose to make the game and release it on the most popular home console at the time. Sony knew the game would be a hit so they made R* sign a timed exclusive agreement. That is just good business sense, like when MS paid R* for exclusive DLC. And R* won't see much from DLC sales? They already have 50 million for the dlc, I'd say they did very well for themselves.

I cant see the DLC being much more than extra missions as well. Not really worth 50M if you ask me. I could be proved wrong and they might go and add a whole new island, but if it's coming out this "Fall" too many people (myself included) will be playing with the new dashboard, GOW2 etc to worry about GTAIV.

It's ok, but being able to make a custom radio station would have been much better. Don't know if you can play music over a game with the PS3, I would guess that you can though.

Seriously, this idea of MS promising exclusive DLC was a pretty lame publicity stunt, as publicity stunts go.
They never told anybody enough to choose one way or another, based on the vague hints they'd given as to what the actual DLC content is.
I'd guess that most people who went out and bought GTA-IV did so for what was already available in game, not on the promises of some unknown future potential.
I'm not surprised that many people apparently aren't waiting for the DLC before trading in their copies for something new to play.
...coming to think of it, if this was planned as way of convincing people to hold onto their copies of GTA-IV for a little longer, thus cutting down on the amount of pre-owned copies for sale and therefore forcing more people to buy the profitable new copies, it's almost quite clever. I had San Andreas on my PC. The custom radio station was awesome and was disappointed it wasn't in the 360 version. I'm sure it's possible if you can listen to your music whilst playing.
Surely that could be fixed in a simple update, but maybe it will be part of the DLC? $50m is a lot of money, I'm sure I read somewhere that the whole game cost $100m to develop and I'd have thought that included building the new engine.
You're always going to see lots of pre owned copies of a game that sold so much (though I'll hold on to mine because I really enjoy the multiplayer). Well to be honest I've no idea what the dlc will be. All I know is from various rumors and bits of speculation I've heard. Some stating that the dlc will be ridiculously huge. Each episode being the size of VC or San An. Which is just not going to happen. It will more than likely be more missions and likely new vehicles, items, activities, etc.
Anyway, I was taking the "size of VC and San An" rumor into consideration. In that case it would have taken a lot of money to develop them. Which won't happen but even in that case R* would still come out ahead. But neither of us know any of the details of their agreement. And R* did not say that the PS3 is completely cut off from DLC. They just won't be getting these 2 episodes.

Haven't they stated that the payment to Rockstar was a loan that will be repaid once the game and the DLC start to rake the cash in, the exclusivity of the DLC being an interest payment of sorts on said loan.

Really? Ms are the morons here when they took a very very popular games franchise that was seen by most consumers as a Sony product, or at least they went hand in hand... and they changed that prrception enough to sell twice as many copies as Sony. And on top of that they will be making money off of the dlc. MS originally wanted timed exclusivity over the actual game. But Rockstar refused or were unable to for legal reasons. So they did the next best thing.

Don't try and make this into some kind of 'console war' thing - there's only one major fanboy in this thread (other than Ivan_PSP) and he left after having his posterior handed to him.
The reason why we took exception to k109s' comments is purely based on the fact that he is obnoxious, irritating, puerile, utterly misinformed and has consistently derailed threads with his whiney, miserable fanboy tripe. I think you'll also find that those that responded to his ridiculous posts either own a PS3 or have made clear, in previous threads on this site, that they will almost certainly buy one at some point in the future. Unlike people like k109, we don't tend to plead allegiance to an international company.

I have no problem with any PS3/360 owner, or even fanboys of any kind - they get a little tiresome, but it's never going to change.
I do take exception to someone on a forum calling me a racist or any other vile name that they can think of....and I offer no apology for that - I will always give as good as I get, if not better. I also take exception to being called a 'fanboy' just for disagreeing with someone elses point of view - what does k109 know about my gaming history?, what does he know about all the consoles I've bought in my life?...he doesn't, but he's happy to make the assumption that I'm a '360 fanboy' because I disagreed with him. He's been doing this with various people on the site and generally being a pain in the a*** for days now.
Once again - there is no 'console war', it's just a bunch of people, with far too much time on their hands, mouthing-off on forums....it has no effect on what actually happens in gaming.

Nope, I own a 360 and it's a great machine...I've also been gaming since the early 80's and have owned (at some point or another) pretty much any console you can name - I'm also planning on buying a PS3 pretty soon. It's just that people like k109 will always assume that anyone that disagrees with them are making an attack at him personally, Sony, or the PS3....it wouldn't be so bad if he wasn't so incredibly rude and if he actually made some decent points instead of just trying to pass off complete BS as 'fact'.
All I've ever seen the guy do is moan, swear at people and totally slag the 360 off at any chance he gets. I'll admit, I bit as soon as he posted - but, that's purely because I (like a lot of other people) are getting a wee bit sick of it now.

Crysis only sold 2 million copies at a retail price of Ł25-Ł30. (A game you also know very little about because of your blind devotion to Sony)
GTA4 sold 4 million Xbox360 copies at Ł40 a pop, of which some of the money from each game goes to M$.
