Sony's just announced a 160GB PlayStation 3, which will be released in Europe on October 31 - just in time for Halloween.
The massive PS3 SKU joins the 80GB version, which goes on sale this side of the pond on Friday, August 22 (that's this Friday), Sony has announced at its Leipzig conference.
The 160GB PS3 will go on sale for 449 Euros (£355) and the 80GB will retail for 399 Euros (£315), so no one's going to have excuse for not downloading copious amounts of download content.
Nothing was mentioned about what USB or card slots the new PS3 would feature, although we expect it to have the same functionality as the 40GB model. That means no backwards compatibility. Sound off below, especially if you've just pre-ordered the 80GB version.
In other Sony news the firm has unveiled a new, or rather enhanced, version of PSP. The new design, as with the Slim and Lite, looks very similar to the old PSP. The PSP-3000 though is sporting an "enhanced" LCD screen. Full story here.
On the games front LittleBigPlanet has been dated for October 29 in Europe, alongside the new 160GB PlayStation 3. Heavy Rain was also showcased at the conference, so look out for the assets soon.
There was also news of a wireless PS3 keypad. You'll find a bit more on that here.
I think i'll keep my 60GB and just upgrade the hard-drive.
It's still very expensive, you'd hope that the PS3's would be around £300 by now totally... Too many models are being released of the PS3. Should've just stuck with the 60GB and full backwards compatibility...
I'm sure some people will wait instead of getting the 80gb one but I can see PS3 and the 360 getting twice yearly updates on it's HDD capacities inculded out the box from now on as companies start pushing downloads at us!
Will appeal to people who aren't interested in upgrading the drive themselves I suppose.

True, Not sure on the appeal to first time buyers though, £350 is still quite a bit of dough. Not sure if it's going to convince PS2 owners to buy one.
Blimey they kept this quiet didn't they, i was speaking to a assistant im my local HMV a while back, he told me sony was releasing a ps3 with a big harddrive im told him yeah probably the 80gb, he said no its bigger than that, im guessing it might have backwards compatibility in it, thinking about it its not really that much dearer than the 80gb, i reckon at christmas the 80gb will be reduced to £220
Sony can't make up their bloody mind can they???? From now on I want to see 1 version of each console... Maybe 2...but no fuctionality cut just hdd size.
Not hard is it? retarded companys (Including Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo for not including a bloody storage device )

Mind you they have the 80GB PS3 at £299.
Aware though I am that I've been there and done it and so cant remember how nerve racking or hard it was to install a HDD for the first time, It's not that bad is it? I mean the price difference means you can either buy a 160gig one or buy a 40gig one and stick in a 250gig HDD. Its even easier than doing it on a pc!!! This makes so little sense it hurts my head

And to think they had a go at Microsoft for releasing two models of the 360 when that launched.
Very savvy by Sony, hoping people wanting a PS3 to play LBP will buy the 160gb version.
Strange though, that if you want to get a new 160gb PS3 to play LBP you'll have to wait a couple of days though, we all know how impatient gamers are! I smell a bundle too.
why they sayin the 80gb is gonna be £315 when its 299? Im glad I got my 60gb at launch with hd's so cheap be able to whack a 300gb in for dirt cheap now
I could be wrong, but I think my PS3 has a paultry 20gb HDD (as does my 360).
When MS started offering larger capacity disks it was to cater for the increased media functionality the 360 was bringing. As yet the PS3 doesn't offer anything requiring more than the 80gb, so I've gotta wonder what they have up their sleaves (hopefully this goes beyond 1-upping MS).
And still no backwards compatibility. Why do they insist that it's not important? It is the one thing they can do to make current PS2 owners feel a little better about buying a new machine.
But of course then they couldn't make them buy the games again on PSN, so that'd never do.
No interest in the extra drive (especially since it'll take externals) but I am interested in the upcoming 80Gb price cut.

I was going to make a comment like yours but then I realised this sort of thing isn't for people like us. It is for people who aren't willing to open up the box and fiddle around.

Ditto on the 80 Gb price cut, just before Xmas would be perfect for me.
Bit off topic but I saw this article on 1UP: http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3169439 and this maybe the reason they havent put BC on the PS3, they cant afford to, they need the attach rate for the PS3 to start going through the roof.

I think a price cut on the 80Gb version would place the PS3 in a really nice position - in the US, I saw them selling for around $400....brilliant price, even if you're only buying it for the Blu-Ray.
Shame about the BC - if I'm to take the plunge and buy one, I'd love to have the chance to play some of the PS2 titles I've missed out on....after reading that article, I highly doubt we'll see the capability on any other SKU Sony produces - shame really.
BREAKING NEWS: sony has confirmed the 160gb ps3 for North American territories, sounds like they are getting the best treatmement, out there its bundled with Uncharted: drakes fortune an is also bundled with a voucher for the psn title PAIN an is priced at $499.99 it released in November, WWW.PSXEXTREME.COM
The only reason you'd need more than a 40gb hard drive, is if you were ripping your games to it, which would be like admiting that the current disc based game storage medium is either too small or too slow..... oh wait a sec...........
To start with they should scrap the 40GB model as the HDD can only manage 8 game install's at most, which is an absolute joke. As for the price of this new model, I can only laugh. If Sony want PS3 to pick up they need to lower the price and decide on a mainstream SKU, much like the Premium is the 360's mainstream SKU. Then they need to market the hell out of it and get some decent exclusives out there.

Or having to install 7 of your games that required a 5GB mandatory install (taking into account you don't get to use the full amount of disk space)
....and assuming that you don't want any of your own music, pictures and PSN goodies on there either.

Yeah I was thinking that when I read that this morning thats why no Sony price cuts. Also the BC thing made me laugh(well not really as I have 40 gig model) when Sony took it away. As all you got from the fanbots at PS3 launch was how superior the PS3 BC was (which true if you were lucky to get it). Alas now ony the 360 still gives you BC on new machines(although the updates for compatibility will dry up as they want your cash spent on the xbox titles for download grrrr)
As for hard drive size on the PS3 all I can say is thank god Sony bettered MSoft and allowed you to upgrade without paying extortionate prices. Now if Msoft sold the cases that the hard drive sits so you could open it and swap HDD's that would be a good feather to have in their cap imo.

They have scraped the 40gb its been replaced with the 80gb core model
Replacing the PS3 HDD is relatively simple. Just be careful when taking the screws out of the caddy that holds the drive. I couldn't get a single one out without threading them, despite having the exact size screwdriver. Bloody cheap screws were in far too tight!
If you run into the same problem as me, grab a hacksaw and make yourself a single grove on any threaded screws big enough for a nice sized flat-head screwdriver.
Sony's PlayTV digital receiver/recorder system is out next month so that may well have something to do with the HDD increase, I cannot wait and have already preordered it on play.com and I'm glad I upgraded my 60GB PS3 to a 250GB HDD.
When putting the new drive in how does the data transfer system work? can you make copies o your data?
use an external hardrive that the ps3 recognises. then back up the hardrive on the ps3 on to the external hardrive . put new hardrive in your ps3. the ps3 will ask you to reformat the new hardrive. then restore from the external hardrive. games from the psn store will have to be downloaded again.

You've probably just hit the nail on the head there with BC from both Sony and Microsoft. They would rather sell the old games to you again as DLC and make some extra cash. Rather than let you play old games on your new console. It explains why Sony went anti BC and why Microsoft suddenly stopped updating the list of games.

You fiddler you
Don't you have some imaginary war of epic proportions to get ready for retard?
160GB beast... next they will paint it a different color and call it an elite. (no, sony fans aint so stupid to fall for such a ploy - you know who you are)
No Sony fans are stupid enough to fall for an 80GB coming out then a sku doubling that being released almost immediately after. At least MS waited a year or so before ripping off 360 buyers, unlike Sony who take the complete p**s out of their stupid but loyal fanbase...as usual.

Erm.. they ARE scrapping the 40 Gb model! 8 installs? Even if the only games you liked were in the 5 Gb install club - 8 games costs £360 @ £45 each.... so you're saying someone would spend all that money on games and not £39.99 on a 160 gig hard drive??
Im in the process of upgrading my 40Gb to 320GB for £50.
I am getting close to filling the 40GB and no ripped games as someone mentioned before in this thread. 40Gb is not a lot these days and I even have a 500GB usb external drive plugged in with my music and Videos at the moment.
Its mainly due to having game patches!! The patches are 2-3GB, for PES, COD, GTA, MGS and so on. I have few Demos and want to store everything on the drive. Music, Videos and so on.
Sorry to sound like a total noob, but can some one post details as to where they got their hard drives from? I guess its easier to ask you guys as you have done it and know exactly what the physical dimensions are, as opposed to asking some one from PC world.

Yeah, because its a games console not a friggin PC! Why should we pay to upgrade just to play games the way they should be played )i.e put the disc in the drive and play...
grrr you ten year olds make me sick why don't you all just fu@k off back to your little holes and bash/praise your selected console maker (including you PC whores). the rantings of a mad man you can tell from aggressive tone he uses that he is a dick also it is safe to say that he was fomming from the mouth while writting that comment bacause of the grr at the start. my advice to you is to go back to hospital so you can get help for problems

@lonewolf2002 It would certainly appear that way, which is a shame because there are readers/writers on this blog, that are indeed unbiased and offer constructive critisism..unfortunately (as is usually the case) there's always a 'few' k**bheads' who ruin it for everyone else... Yes it can get grating the bickering (and yes I can bicker with the best of them). The bickering was half the raeson I gave up just about on online gaming too. I'm still not really an online gamer though. Although I have a feeling that will change soon.

Really? What about the Wii being completely backwards compatible with all Gamecube games and even the controllers to play them properly?
I think it's about time that Sony fixed the problem they made when they released a smaller 40GB PS3 into a world that's getting accustomed to bigger and cheaper storage, so these new SKUs are a good thing in my book... Would have been better if they'd done the 80GB instead of the 40 originally, but we can't change the past. And as has been mentioned already, it's not really something to worry about if you already forked out for a smaller version, since you can buy cheap and huge HDDs and swap them out/get a tech-savvy mate to do it in exchange for a pint quite easily.
I realise that consoles do require a lot more storage space these days (for DLC, installing games etc.) but why do companies like Sony and Microsoft insist on releasing entirely new versions of the X360 or PS3 that are no different from the previous versions excpt they have more memory? I mean, why can't they just release a seperate hard drive or something (yes, I know Microsoft does, but they're way overpriced in my opinion).
The answer to the question above, of course, is MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
