Valve doesn't do PS3. The company's co-founder Gabe Newell isn't a fan, and hasn't been afraid to say so. But Valve's Doug Lombardi has told CVG today that PS3 support could be on the cards as the platforms recent success has raised some eyebrows.
"We're always evaluating what's happening in the marketplace and certainly something that's happening in the last couple of months is that Sony's managed to sell some boxes," said Lombardi.
"So whether or not you like developing for that platform, if they've got millions of people connected to that platform and buying their games you have to take it seriously."
He went on: "They're in the race now, so we've got to re-evaluate that for what it is."
PC is still its primary format, reaffirmed Lombardi, explaining that hardware similarities makes 360 its second choice.
But what are the chances of Valve opening its arms to PS3 and showing it some Left 4 Dead love? "50-50 right now," said Lombardi.
"There's zero chance of it happening this year. It's something that's being talked about right now as the game is gaining popularity and looking like it's going to be a hit."
A 50 percent chance one of the most highly respected PC developers will work on PS3? We'll take those odds.

Yes i do. I mean Valve cried like babies over developing for PS3 and palmed it off to EA, who released a travesty of a product associated with the Valve brand. HL2, HL2 ep1, HL2 ep2, Portal and TF2, all on PS3; it should have been great, it wasn't.
Well, Gabe Newall was moaning about the Cell being too complicated to program, not least because it's multi-core and he hated multi-core as he originally slagged off the 360 for that. But since the future of PC's is multi-core he's had to embrace it (even blaming Intel for promising 10 Ghz single-core Pentiums - like that was ever going to happen). I would have thought any really good programmer would relish the challenge - but maybe not if they work at Valve! I love Valve's games, even if Mr N often comes across as Mr Angry.
Left 4 Dead went from no show on the PS3 at E3 to 50:50 chance of seeing it on the PS3 at LGC. It makes their earlier claim that they weren't developing for the PS3 because their team wasn't large enough look like nothing more than a petty lie. I think it's safe to assume if Valve think they will make money they will release their games on anything. If they don't feel like that now they soon will when EA take them over.

I don't think that's true anymore. You say leading developers are concerned but leading developers like Square, Capcom, Bethesda, Crytek, ID etc are all beavering away on games for all formats without any complaints. It might have carried some truth a while ago but not now. Valve stated that the reason they were not developing for the PS3 was because their development team wasn't big enough. At E3 Left 4 Dead wasn't appearing on the PS3. At LGC its 50:50. At Toyko they might even have a release date at the rate they're going. At the end of the day it's entirely up to them what format they release games on but lets just be honest here, their main aim is to make money. Not to crusade or champion the PC, Xbox or PS3.

It is not sure whether it's because Sony have exclusive rights over there though. Time will tell(thought I read somewhere it could still happen over there) although with the p**s poor take up of the 360 (which picks up when RPG's get released) I can't really see them localizing it to asian territories for the 360.
I haven't read all the replies so if I repeat something I'm sorry but some facts have to be said here. The main people at valve are all ex Microsoft employees and are still extremely close to them. I am a PC owner and have been for many years and valve in an interview not so long ago where quoted as saying that the future of gaming was in multi core processors and that they considered themselves as leading this new way of doing things. They were besides themselves with multi core systems and couldn't wait for 8 cores or even 16 cores and that valve had spent a considerable amount of money working up to this new utopia. Imagine one core for AI, another for physics, then one for the music, maybe one for textures etc etc. They even said that graphics cards would be redundant because the processor would handle everything. Then when Sony bring them a multi core system they say it is over the top and irrelevant. Its to complicated to program muticore systems they squealed. VALVE ARE MICROSOFT FAN BOYS TO THE ABSOLUTE CORE. I used to buy games from steam and spend my money on valve products but recently they have shown their true colours and have treated everyone like idiots. They will take ps3 cash but wont do anything for it. Its a real pity that they treat ps3 owners with such contempt because they are probably one of, if not the best developers out there. You may not like their games but on a technical level they have no peers(on Microsoft systems) Also I have read somewhere that they actually share the same office building with Microsoft, but that may not be fact.

I think better exclusives on ps3 rather than the 360 is not entirely true is it? Fable 2 and Gears of war 2 are going to be two of the best games of the year. No doubt about it they're going to get a lot of perfect 10's in the reviews(or very high 9's anyway).
I want to mention killzone 2 for a sec, according to certain previews of that game, it's going to be another haze(i'll be surprised if it gets more than 7 out of 10). A lot of people seem disappointed with it at this current stage. Resistance 2 is a sequel to a very average fps game. I don't know why people keep mentioning this game, i think(like with killzone 2)some people are getting seduced by the graphics. If this gets higher scores than gears of war 2 i'll start selling crack.
LBP sounds interesting, but it's going to be a very creative quirky oddball title that won't appeal to everyone(building things with characters made of wool? sounds like something we'd find on the wii). Full marks for originality though.
Heavy rain sounds great, i'm really looking forward to that. Along with God of war 3, i'd say they're the main hopes for the ps3(isn't god of war 3 for next year though?)
I don't see a massive amount of stunning ps3 exclusives coming out this year. Mirror's edge is coming to the 360 as well.
And don't get me started on the downloadable games on xbl and the psn service. Look at Braid, the best downloadable game ever released and(for the time being anyway)it's 360 only. Where's the ps3's answer to that? Pixeljunk monsters? oh dear!

There's a rumour flying round that it's going to be a timed PS3 exclusive. When the dev was interviewed they said as far as they knew it wasn't. Then went on to say that it could be something thats agreed above their heads. So time will tell although personally I don't see that happening.

Just to get back to the games and move away from the chest beating. On some of the LGC clips available on PSN there's a few brief clips of a game called Savage Moon. It's a PSN game but it looks like a Starship Trooper type game. I like what I've seen so far but that hasn't been much. The Fat Princess looks fun while a couple of other PSN games are very eye catching.
I'm noticing a trend by both Sony and Microsoft. They both seem to be investing heavily in their PSN and XBL games. While we do get top quailty games like Braid and Echochrome does it mean we will see less investment in full price titles in the future?
I also think the clips of Infamous on PSN are amazing and this is now number 1 on my 'most wanted games list'.
No doubt Microsoft have kept their powder dry until Tokyo where we will get a few more surprises. Hopefully one being Halo 4. It's a good time to own either console, an even better time to own both.

lol at Suivaloom, i think you've just listed the entire ps3's games list for the next year or so there. Ico 2 may even turn up in 2010. Red Lobster, i do have a ps3 but i'm disappointed with several things about it. The delay's, the lack of psn games(compared to xbl which is updated every week)and the lack of killer exclusive titles(metal gear is the only real one). I'm not brainwashed like a lot of sony ps3 fans are, i think the machine is capable of more than sony are giving us. I've mentioned xbl and psn games because it's something i do buy a lot of. It's nice to see ratchet there, you're right to mention that(i bought siren as well). But compared to the amount of games on xbl, it's definitely well behind microsoft's service. I'm not bothered about hardware sales lists, it's the games i'm interested in.

Red Lobster, i do have a ps3 but i'm disappointed with several things about it. The delay's, the lack of psn games(compared to xbl which is updated every week)and the lack of killer exclusive titles(metal gear is the only real one). I'm not brainwashed like a lot of sony ps3 fans are, i think the machine is capable of more than sony are giving us. I've mentioned xbl and psn games because it's something i do buy a lot of. It's nice to see ratchet there, you're right to mention that(i bought siren as well). But compared to the amount of games on xbl, it's definitely well behind microsoft's service. I'm not bothered about hardware sales lists, it's the games i'm interested in.

If you think XBL games are better quailty then fair enough but there's some gems on PSN as well. Did you play echochrome, Pain or Rag Doll Kung Fu? If you honestly think Duke Nukem (a game you can get for nothing on the PC if you look around)on XBL is going to be a better game than something like the Fat Princess or Savage Moon then it's more to do with your taste in games rather than anything Sony have or have not done.

I think better exclusives on ps3 rather than the 360 is not entirely true is it? Fable 2 and Gears of war 2 are going to be two of the best games of the year. No doubt about it they're going to get a lot of perfect 10's in the reviews(or very high 9's anyway).

The big problem I have with the Xbox360 is the bloody noise from the thing. I think the original Xbox was one of the best consoles ever. Well built, well supported and could be modified with ease. If Microsoft had allowed the 360 to be modified as easily as the original then you could open your 360 and replace the noisy bits with quieter, high grade components. Also I've 360 sitting below my TV connected with a component cable. Although not HDMI it's acceptable but why the hell is the PSU outside the 360's case and why is it a third the size of the console itself and just as heavy? It's bad enough behind my TV without a big, loud, ugly PSU nested in there as well. The PS3 is just a more thought out design. There's rumours of an Xbox Redux being released. It would be a lot quieter, smaller, black, RROD free and possibly have an intergraded PSU. If Microsoft release that I will buy one. Until then I feel Microsoft rushed the Xbox360 onto the market and shafted us all.

Seconded, when the PS3 and standalone players first came out yes I'm sure a lot of people bought one for that reason.
Along with the 360 they are both good games machines first and foremost for me. I do not own one HD movie blu-ray or HD-DVD. Upscaled DVD's do for me at the moment.

Seriously dude - take the blinkers off and realise that its not the 360 that is 'plagued' with violent and/or shooty games, it is this generation. You can't really complain at Valve. Developers want to work on the consoles which can gain them the most profit while also express themselves using the hardware. Valve obviously judged PS3 to be a no go due to the vastly different programming from PC and also the fact that it's in last place this gen and struggling to sell. Now things are starting to look up for PS3 and it can actually be taken seriously. It may not have the sales potential of 360 but there are now enough consoles out there to make some sort of profit. Valve make great games so Sony fanboys should sht the hell up, eat some humble pie and be thankful their console of choice is now even being considered as an option.

While soem devs have had great success developing for the ps3, it is acknowledged generally that its unique design is more dificult to work with.
