LGC: LittleBigPlanet UGC is region-specific

Separate servers mean users' levels are only published in home territory
LittleBigPlanet players will not be able to download levels created by players in other global territories, Sony confirmed to CVG.

During a presentation of the game at the Leipzig Games Convention today Sony's Pete Smith, who oversees operations at LBP developer Media Molecule, revealed that levels published on PSN by players will only be downloadable by people in the same region. So we'll not be able to download levels created by Japanese and US gamers.

The reason, he explained, is because each territory will have it's own dedicated server to which levels are uploaded.

"We've got regional servers," explained Smith. "But we can move levels around on servers whenever we want. But you won't have access to the Japanese servers," he added.

Bit mean locking the user stuff to region surely wouldnt be that hard to have it global. Although I doubt very much I will buy this myself (waiting on demo to convince me one way or other).
lonewolf2002 on 22 Aug '08
The first couple of paragraphs could be condensed into:

"User-created levels will be published to the user's territory, but Sony has hinted that content can be made available elsewhere around the globe. Even if you eventually get to play levels made in North America or Japan, you won't be able to go up against players from those regions."

Bit weak that.
At least they say they can shift levels across, which leaves the option to move the top rated foreign levels over for us to play.
I would've still preferred to find the quirky ones on my own though. Crying or Very sad

It makes sense though. Global servers are incredibly expensive and would mean that downloads would take a LOT longer regardless of where you live. I suppose they'll have something similar to Bungie Favourites where they pick the best levels from around the world so that'll suit most people just fine.

This is the first bad news I've read about LittleBigPlanet.
benbot80 on 22 Aug '08
As long as there is a lot of well designed levels to download, I don't mind at all. I don't want to download a lot of crappy levels!

Typical Sony, s**tting on their customers as usual.

As long as the developers pay attention to the servers so make the best levels global i'm not worried. Though there seems to be little point in this.
almanac2015 on 23 Aug '08
it could work, but if LBP doesn't sell well in the PAL region we will be stuck with nothing but loads of greenhill zone clones.

Why would they take longer? Confused

It would only affect the ping to the server... not the download speed (unless that particular server is being hammered). I've downloaded from servers in Korea at 2mb a second on my old 24mb conx, I'm in the UK, and the pings to that server were HORRENDOUS.

It's not region locked. Confirmed on the EU Playstation forums: http://community.eu.playstation.com/playstationeu/board/message?board.id=b_EN_GAMES_general_lbp&thread.id=3462

Aye PS3 fanboy have this:

"The confusion arose out of regional differences in how moderation will work as there are different legal rules each region have to play by, and at one point this looked like it may require the game to be independent in each region". Thankfully, this was unnecessary in the end. So you can stop fretting now; your level creations will be playable worldwide and, perhaps more importantly, we're going to have a huge selection of content from all different cultures to play with soon after launch. Is it October 29th yet?

Good news for LBP lovers.
lonewolf2002 on 23 Aug '08
No its not.

Not region locked!

Typical MS Fanboy, criticizing Sony for something that isn't even true.

this is so funny. the correct update to this incorrect rumor is at least three days old, meaning the incorrect rumor itself is even older.
