EA's excellent-looking survival horror game Dead Space has been banned in Japan, China and (of course) ultra-conservative Germany.
According to EA community manager Andrew Green, the moody horror game is simply too moody and too horrific for German and Far Eastern shelves, which isn't too surprising considering the territories' long history of game censoring.
But there is one piece of good news (unless you live in Japan): the US release date has been moved forward again to October 14, more than a fortnight ahead of the original Halloween release. Europe is still on for October 24 at the moment.
PC versions of Dead Space are planned for a little later, hitting North America on October 20 and Europe on Halloween, October 31. At least one version got it right.
I thought Dark Sector was quite disturbing in terms of it's dark, moody atmosphere and twitchy zombie foes. I was playing it last night and almost shat myself at one scene...Very violent as well. I don't think that was banned at all?

Actually your Christopher Walker Avatar scares me.
Besides the aforementioned Resident Evil, I can think of numerous games that are considerably more gory and/or scary than Dead Space, and yet aren't banned in Japan... in fact, several of the games I'm thinking of were *made* in Japan.
Doom 3 also deserves a mention, since not only does it have a similar level of gore, but also a similar setting, similar atmosphere, etc. And yet, I'm pretty sure it hasn't been banned in Japan (I'm not sure if it's even been banned in Germany).
Can't really see why this is banned, especially in Japan. Oh well, western games never do all that well over there anyway... As for the release date, pretty stupid if you ask me. They are launching in and around the release of heavy hitters such as Fable 2, Fallout 3, Little Big Planet, Far Cry 2, Bioshock etc. Sadly this will most likley be pushed aside until new year sales come along.
as long as the game doesn't get banned in the uk and survives intact, i couldn't careless that the other countries banned it. In fact i wouldn't mind waving it in front of them as a sign of power.

I live in Germany but import all my games from UK, as I don't want to play my games "komplett in Deutsch". Will I be able to import this?
You're in the EU, so there are no trade restrictions on imports for video games, it just means retailers in germany are not allowed to get a licence to sell it.

I wish i could find a game that did for me what Resident Evil 1 did on the PSone, s**t myself when they dog jumped through the window! I jumped half a mile!
Ive not played Dark Sector yet, but since you said that i might now have to go out and get it to see what its like. and the fact its based on the GOW engine i need to play!

It's a funny one, I bought Dark Sector along with 4 other games a few months back. I had so many games to play it was shelved for a few weeks. After tiring of MGO (120+ Hours of it!!) I went back to Dark Sector and completed it last night (5 late nights of exhaustive gaming). It's a great game, I was surprised at how good it gets as it goes.. Extremely violent (slow mo glaive is so addictive), very moody, visually stunning and really worth picking up a pre owned copy. a tad repetitive but if you like killing stuff then I'm sure you'd like it
Story line is a little weak but it's a BIG game that let's you do pretty much everything you'd like to do in it like controlling robots and using a HUGE machine gun when you euip the power suit. Perfect filler for Res Evil and Dead Space guys...
