Dead Space gets mass-banning

...in Japan, Germany and China - US release date moved forward
EA's excellent-looking survival horror game Dead Space has been banned in Japan, China and (of course) ultra-conservative Germany.

According to EA community manager Andrew Green, the moody horror game is simply too moody and too horrific for German and Far Eastern shelves, which isn't too surprising considering the territories' long history of game censoring.

But there is one piece of good news (unless you live in Japan): the US release date has been moved forward again to October 14, more than a fortnight ahead of the original Halloween release. Europe is still on for October 24 at the moment.

PC versions of Dead Space are planned for a little later, hitting North America on October 20 and Europe on Halloween, October 31. At least one version got it right.

If it's been banned it must be good just like manhunt (sarcastic tone off)

Seriously will keep an eye on this though as it looks good.

I loved Manhunt, played it for ages, but anyway I agree it does look good plus I bet Australia will ban it to or at least have it heavily cut.

O right, so a sense of twisted pervading creepiness is so much worse than games like GTA which focus on gang warfare, drug peddling, etc. Rolling Eyes

Not that I mind a bit of GTA, though. Was just commenting....

This is bizarre. I've played it and it's not in ANY way worth a banning.

Some countries get their knickers in a twist over anything these days....

its probably because the aim of the game is to dismember your enemies as that's the only way to kill them or something like that.

So this is more gory than Resi 4? Doubtful.

OOOooooo Im suddenly a lot more interested Smile

So this is more gory than Resi 4? Doubtful.

It's got its share of icky bits, but it's generally quite dark and very atmospheric.

It's a brilliant game, to be sure, and there are corpses and such about, and lots of organic-looking alien flesh, but it's hardly worse than Resi...

I thought Dark Sector was quite disturbing in terms of it's dark, moody atmosphere and twitchy zombie foes. I was playing it last night and almost shat myself at one scene...Very violent as well. I don't think that was banned at all?

Actually your Christopher Walker Avatar scares me.

In a country where you can buy a game called battle raper thats all about rape banning this seems stupid.......

also i would say a game like silent hill is much worse than this.

I live in Germany but import all my games from UK, as I don't want to play my games "komplett in Deutsch". Will I be able to import this?

Bet you could no problem if you got it from Ebay as they wont care too much about shipping to countries that have banned this. Wink

Not sure about big retailers.

Christopher Walken's face SHOULD be banned.

Same day as Fable and a week before Fallout. Ut-oh...

Very, although he has done some good films so maybe that lets him off.

Besides the aforementioned Resident Evil, I can think of numerous games that are considerably more gory and/or scary than Dead Space, and yet aren't banned in Japan... in fact, several of the games I'm thinking of were *made* in Japan.

Doom 3 also deserves a mention, since not only does it have a similar level of gore, but also a similar setting, similar atmosphere, etc. And yet, I'm pretty sure it hasn't been banned in Japan (I'm not sure if it's even been banned in Germany).

had me worried when i read MASS-BANNING
littlenuthead on 5 Sep '08
if its banned in enough countries you know its good
Jellybeans on 5 Sep '08
We have seen screenshots but are yet to play the game..it might be alot worse than we thing!!
dom6918 on 5 Sep '08
Hmmm banning this seems odd-there's nothing here that hasn't been seen loads of times!

Can't really see why this is banned, especially in Japan. Oh well, western games never do all that well over there anyway...
As for the release date, pretty stupid if you ask me. They are launching in and around the release of heavy hitters such as Fable 2, Fallout 3, Little Big Planet, Far Cry 2, Bioshock etc.
Sadly this will most likley be pushed aside until new year sales come along.
vulcanraven01 on 5 Sep '08
as long as the game doesn't get banned in the uk and survives intact, i couldn't careless that the other countries banned it. In fact i wouldn't mind waving it in front of them as a sign of power.

I second that. YARG!

You're in the EU, so there are no trade restrictions on imports for video games, it just means retailers in germany are not allowed to get a licence to sell it.

I wish i could find a game that did for me what Resident Evil 1 did on the PSone, s**t myself when they dog jumped through the window! I jumped half a mile!

Ive not played Dark Sector yet, but since you said that i might now have to go out and get it to see what its like. and the fact its based on the GOW engine i need to play!

It's a funny one, I bought Dark Sector along with 4 other games a few months back. I had so many games to play it was shelved for a few weeks. After tiring of MGO (120+ Hours of it!!) I went back to Dark Sector and completed it last night (5 late nights of exhaustive gaming). It's a great game, I was surprised at how good it gets as it goes.. Extremely violent (slow mo glaive is so addictive), very moody, visually stunning and really worth picking up a pre owned copy. a tad repetitive but if you like killing stuff then I'm sure you'd like it

Story line is a little weak but it's a BIG game that let's you do pretty much everything you'd like to do in it like controlling robots and using a HUGE machine gun when you euip the power suit. Perfect filler for Res Evil and Dead Space guys... Wink
