PSP not in the shadow of DS, says Sony

"We're very happy and comfortable with our PSP business," says UK boss David Reeves
The DS may be doing incredibly well, but that doesn't mean the PSP is doing badly says SCEE UK boss David Reeves, who insists the PSP isn't living in the shadow of Nintendo's handheld.

"I think you can ... see the smile on our faces when we talk about what we're offering at this price and the games that are available [for PSP], said Reeves. "We're very, very happy and comfortable with our PSP business," he added.

"And I don't think we're necessarily in the shadow of DS - they have different types of games and we have a different positioning for PSP which is not just about gaming, but Go Explore and everything else that comes with it.

"So we're very very happy with its progress and the more and more we go to publishers with it the more they are coming on board," he told MCV.

We guess he's very happy.

The PSP is without a doubt in the shadow of the DS, but thats what happens when you try to compete with nintendo in the handheld market.

PSP does seem to be doing well in the handheld market, but he would be saying the complete opposite if PSP sales were ahead of the DS sales.

It seems Nintendo don't brag that much, not as far as I can see anyway. Sony just seem to be making excuses all the time.
martinh1979 on 9 Sep '08
As much as it pains me to say it, I have had more enjoyable gaming experiences on the PSP as opposed to the DS (Disgaea: Afternoon of Darkness FTW!). Unfortunately, as with any Sony machine, you have to wade through monumental amounts of crap just to find the odd gem of a game.
That said though, its surprisingly well-catered for when it comes to RPGs...
morgadp on 9 Sep '08
You can summarise what he's saying in "we're making money but we want to make as much as Nintendo". I'm still considering picking one of these up when the new 3000 model is released. It could fight off the boredom when I'm away from home with work.

You have to wade through monumental amounts of crap on the DS as well. 90% of the games for the DS are total rubbish. Unless you like taking virtual dogs for a walk. It's just very well targeted crap.

The PSP has been a big success; no one else has managed to sustain a hand held other than Nintendo so take 1/3 of the market is an achievement.

They certainly appeal to different markets but in my family 4 of us has a psp and one has a ds (and she now wants a psp).

I'm yet to find a single DS game i'd buy

I have a feeling if you hadn't bought any of those in any of the multitude of previous versions, you wouldn't be planning on buying any of them now.

I don't own either machine but it looks like there are more games on the DS I would play, battery life would also make a big difference for me as well.

As far as I can tell, the PSP will play the same as a PS1-2, whereas, the DS offers a different way of playing that could interest me.

New Super Mario Bros? Always prefered teh orginal Sonic's and Crash Bandicoots to Mario and I'd rather play ratchet and clank now.
FF Tactics A2? Not played a Final Fantasy since number 7
Advance Wars? I'll be honest I say I don't know that game
Phantom Hourglass? Never enjoyed Zelda at all
FF IV? Again not played a Final Fantasy since number 7
Mario Kart? Not on a handheld; its all about multiplayer for me so if I'm going to play it it'll be on a wii

My brother on the hand would have bought most of those games although he too owns a psp (50% of his games are made by Square Enix)

I'm really interested in the types of games you prefer to play. Mind sharing?

Saying that, DS is pretty much for everyone. I'm sure if you were to really try, you would squeeze out a few gems that are to your taste.

You can play multiplayer mario kart on the DS with one cartridge and 2 machines(unlike the PSP) and you can also play online multiplayer to.

no you idiot you need to face facts the DS is in the shadow of the psp

reasons for my claims
the psp have far better games out for it the only games the DS has is nintendogs(crap) braintraining(crap).

also have you seen the new screen the new model is getting.

Laughing Agreed.

The DS is like the Wii - and everything outside the 'Nintendo stuff' looks garbage. It sells well because its the cheap & cheerful alternative - and proves people will buy anything, if its marketed well enough..

I actually agree with him. I don't believe the PSP is in the shadow of the DS. While I've no doubt Sony would love to share the DS's level of success, they are both very different hand helds, and the market has room for both.

That is until we're hit with a huge global recession and no one can afford anything let alone two different hand helds.

palancas7 on 9 Sep '08
I have both handhelds and can say without doubt the DS is the superior games machine. Just having a touch screen makes mobile gaming a lot better, take Zelda for example, it works superbly. Mario Kart online is awesome. Advance wars is superb, new Super Mario Bros is a classic. Lot's of good 3rd party titles too. Yes there is a pile of crap as well but just choose wisely.

My PSP gathers dust mainly because the games library isn't as good as i hoped it would be, but above all it's bloody uncomfortable to use after about 10 minutes play. The analgoue stick is an f'ing joke! Plus i have a nasty habit of brushing the on/off switch whilst playing which can be bloody annoying. I was so up for the PSP that I imported a US one but in hindsight i shouldn't have bothered. Still, if you're into the Sony franchises then it's a good fit for you.

New Super Mario Bros? FF Tactics A2? Advance Wars? Phantom Hourglass? FF IV? Mario Kart?

Don't forget Bangai-O Spirits, Front Mission, Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan!, Professor Layton, Phoenix Wright, Viva Pinata, and the upcoming Chronotrigger.

...although the PSP does have Tekken, God of War and a much, much better selection of driving games.

Depends what floats your boat, really. I prefer the DS by far due it's much more portable clamshell design, and the fact I've now sneakily backed up all of my games onto an R4 means no more lugging around extra carts for me.

On the other hand, if I hadn't have broken the screen on my GP2X, I wouldn't be using either of 'em...
SunScramble on 9 Sep '08
Let's not forget that the PSP also plays PS1 games downloaded from the PS3. This is one of the best features of the PSP, in my humble opinion. Oh, and even some of the PSN games can be played remotely. And you can surf the web (slowly). And use it as a GPS. And use it is a portable MP3 player. And watch films on it, etc......

Mark - is Victory Boxing one of the games that can be added over to the PSP from the PS3? (I'll ask you because you seem to be the only other person that bought that game)

I'm glad there is a blinkered Microsoft fan who display a complete lack of reasoning and intelligence. It should level things with Tam/Suiv/Nigel. Makes the day go faster if nothing else.

I wonder what its like when Suiv goes to Game and has to walk through the Xbox section. He probably starts to feel faint and clutches at his throat for oxygen, going "eughhh!"

Good to see a nice mature opinion. I'm sure that tens of thousands of people employed by Japanese companies in the UK would agree with the xenophobic homeland statement. You'll be calling Tam a blinkered, insulting idiot next.

It annoys me when people compare the DS and the PSP. Both have different advantages and uses. DS is more easier and fun to play, while the PSP is more powerful and has a wider range of uses. Just because two things are handheld doesn't mean that they must both compete for the same stuff. Apart from money, that is. Rolling Eyes

I've never understood the xenophobic asides levelled at the japanese on these forums either. Perhaps the older people are Japan are slightly more anti-western (in the same way the older people in UK/US can be towards Japan, Germany etc) but as far as I was aware, the Japanese youth soaks up western culture like a sponge. And they are far more tolerant towards other countries than vast swathes of the US too.

They still have their own culture (as do we) but they do embrace things that come from outside of Japan. The majority of the major gaming companies are Japanese, so of course they will have Japanese influences. And have the anti Japanese/PSP brigade forgeotten where Nintendo come from???
ricflair on 10 Sep '08
Right, what you need here is someone who owns a DS but not a PSP, but is going to get one at the 3000s launch, to put a different perspective on things.

Right first of all, the person mentioning the games the DS has:

NSMB is no classic, the second worst of the 2D Mario platformers (only second because the western version of SMB2 was a lie). I'm much more looking forward to playing Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters.

FF: Tactics A2 is good, sure, but PSP has the better version (War of the Lions)

Phantom Hourglass is a disgrace to the Zelda franchise, the worst Zelda ever (bar the CDi games).

Advance Wars was good but niche.

Mario Kart I can't and won't say anything against. (Other than the fact that I'd rather have F-Zero and there I'm catered for (on PSP) by Wipeout)

If you actually listed the games that are generally agreed as great by the DS hardcore, such as TWEWY, Pokemon D/P and the Ace Attorney games, I might pay more attention to you than if you just pulled big names out of your ass.
