It seems to be an unfortunate trend of modern online gaming - last week it was Spore, and now it's Socom: Confrontation that has been plagued with online server issues. Do these people not see it coming?
This, of course, has made performance of the currently-running public online beta less than desirable, but developer Slant Six Games is on the case.
"Due to overwhelming demand for the SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation Public Beta, we are experiencing load related issues. These issues are causing abnormal latency, disconnects, long load times, login errors and community features such as clans and stats not functioning correctly (or at all)," it posted on its official site today.
"We are doing everything we can to resolve these issues as quickly as possible and you should see some improvements progressively over the next couple of days," it added, shortly before confirming it'll be releasing a patch at midday today (GMT).
The servers will be down for around an hour an a half, and here are the changes you can expect:
Adds support for European EULAs.
Adds support for dedicated servers located in Europe and Australia.
Addresses a number of stability and late joining issues.
Reduce the volume of the proximity chat by 50%.
However, the developer warns: "The server maintenance and patch are not meant to address all issues. We will have more updates to both the server and client in the future."
It has been unplayable over the last 2 days. It is a beta though to be fair. At least they are ironing out the kinks now rather than after full release.
Er... its' a BETA. This is the point isn't it? You use BETA TESTING to see how your system fairs under load. In fact, you put it under more load than you expect it to get in 'production' status so you know how much headroom you've got. Plus it's free. This is the deal - it's a beta, it's free but you can pretty much expect it to fall over at some point.
It's not at all like the Spore issues - people had paid for that already and they couldn't get it to work. That's a whole worse kettle of fish.

I know it shouldn't be as bad but isn't this one of the reasons why we keep getting betas to all these online games? To test server stability?
I don't think you can really compare a huge retail game like Spore to a beta version of SOCOM either.

Annoying post. Sorry original poster but your point of view is well... pointless. Given that this is a limited Beta test experience, logically it´s a stress test also.
You mention that this is the norm of games now a days, well hell yes. Any decent game goes through this process to ensure that "paying" customers are getting their on-lines worth BEFORE it launches and not as a post-release patch to fix on-line performance.
I´m in the Beta and I can assure you that aside from the server response which is at times latent due to thousands of people on-line at once, the game is quite sturdy.
How about defining "unplayable"?!?!?!? In no way do I see it as such so I´m curios...

I was watching Playr over the weekend, and they claimed it was very much like Ghost Recon - how accurate is that?

Couldn´t say never played Ghost Recon but it is in the true assertion of the term "tactical" shooter. So no FPS shot everything that moves kind of action... you die quick if you get shot in the right place and vice-versa.
Movement is also closely mimics this as your stance is quite smart from cover and "looking" over the corner to laying on the ground and rolling. Levels of zoom and tons of customization character and weapons.

From that description, it does sound a bit like Ghost Recon or Rainbow Six. Not that that's a bad thing - both were pretty cool (though I prefered R6).
I would'nt know, as I didn't get an invite for the beta(again). But I'm not bitter...
Make sure you register your games. Join up to their web sites and keep an eye on their forums. I didn't think this was closed testing.
Also it might be a beta but a beta shouldn't have any serious problems. A beta should just need a few tweaks and touches before release. I wouldn't be surprised to see this game delayed for a while.

@voodoo341 I wouldn´t say that it´s serious issue.
The problem is certainly there as far as server latency goes but not anywhere close to as bad as the open beta of MGS4. I do believe that people are over blowing the issue way over proportion.
by the way I like your avatar but it´s arguably quite distracting... in a good way.
hmm sounds like cvg are just doing this story as they are bitter that sony chose eurogamer to give the free beta codes out.
yea, im one of the lucky 6000 that got one, eurogamer said they try to get more keys from SONY, so keep looking on their site if they do get some more guys.
I think the loading to due to the amount of players in each game, I joined a game with about 4 players, loaded in a couple of mins, but with about 24, takes about 10 mins. the servers really must have been crashed or broken down later on, the 1st night I had a fine game with about 30 players, but recently when I join a high player game, I lose sound, only hear the sound to let me know if someones mics going on/off, and its all laggy. When the game is running fine, its ok altogether, just the long loading and the lag im concerned about at the moment, anyway its a beta, we should expect/find these things.
I'm not complaining (I understand it is a beta, and its free!) but i have had it 2 days and haven't got in a game yet (wouldn't load at all or at least after 20 mins). All im saying is that i hope that the patch improved loading times (the only problem for me). So i'm off to check it now

True and I hope its not. The game looks fun.
As for the avatar, I'd like to say it's the girlfriend but better not or the wife will kill me! (it't not her either)

*remembers back to MGS4 beta*
Thats what people said to me then when I pointed out game killing bugs and server issues (Although I thought that was the point of betas ) lets hope they actually FIX the online problems unlike Konami whos online gaming history is quite dodgy nowdays to be fair (PES08/MGS4 in most recent)
