Sony has just told us that WipEout HD will cost £11.99 when it eventually hits the PS Store this year.
Remake though it may be, WipEout HD is a fully-featured WipEout game, including online play and some of the slickest visuals of any PS3 game.
That, for just over a tenner, is a bargain especially if you haven't even played the PSP original, WipEout Pure.
A release date is STILL to be confirmed (it's been a long time coming after running into technical problems) but we're promised an announcement real soon.
We've got the final code installed on our debug and it looks, runs, sounds amazing.
Seems kind of expensive to me, wonder if there will be a demo.
Please tell me that was sarcasm! As a fan of Wipeout, I'd pay double that anyday! Online components alone make Ł11.99 an absolute steal. Plus it has trophy support from the get-go, as well as custom soundracks. Nothing short of a full price release imo. Mint.

Ive never played wipeout before and dont really know if i want to risk Ł12 on a PSN title, a demo would help me make my mind.

You're right, if there's a demo available then of course it makes sense to "try before you buy!", but if it's anything like the previous versions then this will be a definite must-have if you're into fast, action packed, adrenaline junkie type games, and this coming from someone who hasn't even got a PS3, so will have to give it some hammer on a mates instead!

Thats a fair point; at least with XBLA titles there is *always* a demo that you can try before you fork out for the game, but thats not always the case on PSN.
In any case, WipEout HD should well be worth your Ł12, I've played every single WipEout game (including the slightly lacklustre Fusion) to death, few games have taken up as much of my time as that series.
<--- still fastest time holder on the Wipeout arcade!
Considering Siren Blood Curse was Ł19.99 this is a real bargain and having spent so much time playing 2097 a decade ago I cannot wait to get stuck in again...

How can anyone have have missed out on Wipeout??
I suppose if you were too young then fair enough.
One of the coolest UK franchises Sony have ever had . It had the UK's best Graphic Design Agency working on it as well as some of the best UK electronic artists lending their tuneage to it. I remember almost every nightclub in the UK had a Sony sponsored chill out zone with Wipeout running on it. It was marketed to perfection and shifted Ps1's by the truckload.
I must say though, after seeing this in motion I think the colour palate is a little all over the place for me. 2097 was spot on (more subdued with perfect bursts of colour at certain points). I think that's more to do with The Designer's Republic having more of an influence on it back then than now. I think Wipeout will never be as huge as it used to be but this is an essential buy for me...just for nostalgia alone.
Having owned 2097 back in the day i have it was good but not great, and i have to wonder how well it has aged. however, Ł12 really is nothing so its definitely worth a purchase as i imagine its worth a blast now and then.
Ahh, sweet. Wipeout wasn't the greatest game, it was all about the slick presentation, smooth frame rates, kick ass soundtracks and jaw dropping visuals.
I can see myself plonked in front of the 50" pretending i'ma real zero gravity pilot, with some ambient techno in the background.
Are the Chemical Bros. doing any more tracks for Wipeout HD?
Daedalus - how on earth can you say "seems a bit expensive to me." Yet you go onto say "ive never played any of the wipeout games" (or something along those lines). See what i mean about always beeing anti Sony?? Alot of people seem to think that this is cheaper than expected. I expected it to be a Ł14.99 release. But 11.99 has coaxed me into buying it i think. But seriously, like you said try the demo cus i think you will like it
what a bargain! I was expecting at least 20quid for this, definetly gonna get it now! oh and pure was amazing to start with so in hd on 50inch lcd its gonna be amazing!

Anti sony...im about to go to uni and really cant afford to waste Ł10-Ł15 on a psn game that i may or may not like, i really want viva pinata 2 (its only Ł25 at morrisons but i cant afford that right now) if me trying to be sensible with my money is being "anti sony" then im guilty.

I've got a young 'un coming in january, so I know exactly how you feel...mind you, few years of skintiness will put you in good stead, young man. And games will still be here when you're rolling in it! Though having the time to play them will be another problem altogether...
I'd forgotten about that! Ahh, corporation in sheff had about 20 if I remember correctly.
Those were the days. Getting pissed, skating the half pipe and playing some videogames... Then getting a ropey burger from the cabin outside on the way home.
Ł12 for a prestige classic remake, in full HD glory and with online play, trophies and custom music.
or Ł25 to batter stuffed pigs about with a virtual stick.
i know what one id call a waste of money.
Ever played Viva Pinata? Apparently not, since you don't seem to know what its about, and I like that you casually avoid mention of the full HD glory with online play, Achievements and Custom music when referring to the 360 title there.
Both are awesome value if you ask me. And do remember that WipEout HD only has a handful of tracks, which are remakes of old ones.

i was highlighting online play and HD graphics for wipeout as its a first for the series. even if you have played the psp one, this will be a totally different experience.
and trophies and custom music are new to the ps3, so thats worth mentioning, especially in a Ł12 game. custom music is particularly cool in a game like wipeout.
your own tracks blaring out while attending to a cardboard stuffed toy is less impressive. wipeout suits customs tracks more than most games out there.
Ypu may be missing the point, i enjoyed viva pinata 1 a lot so would like VP2, however i cant afford to buy it currently, Wipeout is cheaper but as its something ive never played and also as it sounds like quite a small/restricted game i think Ł12 is a lot to potentially waste.
Who cares about custom soundtracks. I love my metal but Cold Storage is Wipeout to me. His tracks on the wipeout games are superb and whenever Canada comes on random play Wipeout just comes to mind. He is bringing out a Cold Storage HD album which will hopefully be out at the same time as the game (not sure if he has a song on Wipeout HD but hopefully he does). If you haven't heard his stuff check him out. Loads of free downloadable tracks including many many Wipeout tracks.

oh man, your so behind, you discovered ps2 games like silent hill or final fantasy recently, so what you were playing during ps2 era - sims, singstar?

I bought a gaming pc about 2 years after i got the ps2 so jumped to pc gaming, so to answer your question i was playing stuff like counter strike, call of duty 1&2, total war, evil genius etc etc
I hope there's a demo too, as it'll be the only way I'll bee able to play it as PSN, for some reason, will just not accept my credit card, I've tried every possible combination of inputting it (Capitals, all capitals, all lowercase etc), I've tried 3 cards on it and it still just wont validate. b******s TO SONY, my money is just not good enough, Microsoft and Nintendo cant get enough of it though (with the same card I might add).

sounds like youve missed out on some real gaming classics
i think your missing the point. you say your strapped for cash yet would rather spend Ł25 on a sequel which cant be very different to the first one - lets face it, instead of spending a paltry Ł12 on something you say you havent played ever - one of the great gaming franchises, in full HD, with multiplayer as well as in demand trophies and a custom soundtrack - cold storage do a great job on wipeout, but there are many great styles that can work with this game, now you can choose what you want. (although it should be some form of EDM)
you are trying to trivialise a big sony release as always - cause your reasoning doesnt add up.
Given the opportunity i would rather spend Ł25 on a game i know id like rather than one i may not like yes.
I dont give a s**te about trophies, custom music HD graphics etc etc, none of that stuff matters to me so listing it as something to give extra weight to your arguement is like trying to persuade someone to buy a fish by slapping them in the face with it.
Im not trivialising anything, all i said was I think its expensive for a PSN title, i then qualified my comment by backing it up with a reason, you are the one who keeps going on about it and keeps forcing me to justify my choice, i havent said i wont buy it, or said it looks s**t or anything like that so frankly i really dont see why you are continuing to ask the same questions of me.
Daed, sorry i didnt mean to argue with you. I just thought that it was a bit strange how anybody could say a game is expensive when theyve never played it. But as you mentioned i guess its a gamble, which could make it potentially an expensive buy. Well hopefully theyll be a demo for you to try mate, that way you can decide whether its worth the plunge, or whether you will choose something else . What are you going to study at uni? Good luck with it!
Cool sounds good mate. Not long til youre living on Pot Noodle then lol. . Its a shame you couldnt wait til Xmas time to sell your Wii, you'd make a bomb!
id go for the true sequel that everyone was been waiting for. i dont think it needs, or will have a demo to prove itself. at Ł12, im sure a lot of folks wont think twice about "taking the plunge".
I'd hardly class WipEout HD as a "true sequel". All of its features have been seen before in previous WipEout games, barring trophies (pretty much a null point, but nice all the same) and the HD resolution. Its a remake, a homage, and a great-looking one at that, but really not a sequel.
I think a demo should be released, though. Demo's of Pure and Pulse were out before the game was released, and even though I'd probably have bought them both anyway it was still nice to be sure that what i was spending money on was what I expected. When a game is digital only, with no way to trade it on if you don't like it or part exchange it, I think its only right that there should be a demo so that you know exactly what you're getting.

I am, not letting it go for less that Ł180 now, i wont lose on it at xmas time.
theres been a cvg staff member in this topic say the game is running and playing great, an xbox owner say hes jealous of this (Ł12 PSN) game, and eveyone else say positive stuff about it. and though you claim never to have played it, you must have heard about it.

Ive never played any wipeout game and only know of this by name and the odd picture, i have no clue about its size etc.
I never said i was going to buy VP over Wipeout, i said VP is a game i very much want but cant afford so im wary of spending nearly Ł15 on a game i may not like.

i never called wipeout HD a true sequel, i said it was the true sequel people had been waiting for, as opposed to viva pinata 2.
there may be a demo, but i wouldnt have thought it. there is demos of the psp games cause they need all the sales they can get on that thing. ps3 is different. why was there no special demo version of warhawk? thats a PSN title, and more expensive.. surely that had more to prove than the mighty wipeout.
Semantics aside, my point is its not a sequel
I don't know why there was no demo of Warhawk, but its more fool them for that. I'm vaguely interested in Warhawk, but I'll be damned if I'm going to pay for it without knowing what its like first.

Mate- your are always negative about ps3 stories. Yet you always seem so positive on the 360 forums? If your that skint how the hell can you afford three consoles and a gaming PC? Exactly. Posting negative comments for the sake of it. Ive never played any wipeout game and only know of this by name and the odd picture, i have no clue about its size etc.

No worries, i didnt buy braid because i thought it was expensive (and s**t).
Then you missed easily the best Live Arcade game so far.
Tried the demo and HATED it, braid is wank.
U R RONG The DEMO is wank. It's just the first few pieces, which are no challenge at all. There's a different mechanic to each level after that. BEST GAME ON LIVE. TRUFAX!!1
