Levine "not really working on" BioShock 2

Designer not "substantially involved" in 2K follow-up
BioShock designer Ken Levine has said he's not "substantially involved" in the development of the 2K Marin-developed sequel, BioShock 2.

Speaking in an interview with OXM, Levine, who was lead on the first game, said he's only involved in a few parts of the sequel's development process. Levine and the first game's studio 2K Boston are currently working on an unnamed new IP.

"I am, at best, sort of informally engaged in certain scenes, a couple of things in it," said Levine. "But I'm not really working on it at a material level.

"Melissa, who was the producer on Bioshock, is over there running that group now," he explained. "It's going to be their thing, their project. I think they're cogniscent of the reaction and people's feelings on the first game. I'm not going to be substantially involved."

The follow-up is due out in Q4 next year. Hopefully Marin won't bugger it up.

Im confident that Bioshock 2 will be a cracker, its not like the first was perfect, the games final chapters were a total let down, not saying it was a bad game just that it can improve on what went before it.

As ever, glass half full.

This is gonna make me sound stupid but I don't care because it's been annoying me for months now. What does IP stand for?

Intellectual Property

Or Internet Protocol, if something is refering to networks. It is not you being stupid it is the widespread use of initials and acronyms while assuming that everyone will understand that is stupid.

Intellectual Property, normally.

I just hope that they don't mess up Levine's world since he's not going to be there to share the vision.

Yeh he's too busy helping the film guys out...

Intelectial Property....it all makes sense now!!

Thanks for clearing it up.

I find this mad trend of every game (even the s**t ones like resistance) getting a sequel really annoying, Bioshock was a great game but does it need a sequel ? Is there really so much left to tell. I thought Bioshock was a masterpiece but i really dont think the game needs to have a sequel made, although presumably a sequel wouldnt be possible so it would need to be a prequel or based in a different area to rapture all together. Id love for Bioshock 2 to be a fantastic game, however i feel some games dont need sequels, that they are best left on their own as modern classics.

I agree to a point. I like to see sequels if they can add to what came before. for example I would love to see a new sequel to Syndicate on the current generation hardware as I think if it was done right, the syndicate world could be brought to life better than ever, but I am not sure this can be done in bioshock this generation. Perhaps next generation they could maybe bring more to the game but this is just a cash in. However it has been going on since games began and will not go away.

Decent enough game but nowhere near as good as the hype made it out to be, and I guess the sequel will be just as over-hyped!

Why do you feel the need to keep slamming Resistance at every opportunity? We all know you hate the game as you've said so several times in other posts (please don't reiterate it again here). It's getting old really fast. Thank you.

I’ve just recently returned to Bioshock to finally get round to playing it on the hardest setting, as the upcoming PS3 release got my interested piqued again, and it really is a fantastic game.

It’s got me hooked once more, though I know exactly what is going to happen I’m still finding things that surprise me in it, and I am actually experimenting in a lot more ways of dispatching foe.

Though I see the point about what’s the need for a sequel, the game feels complete, though the story of Rapture may well not be, there are many more avenues of possibility the narrative could take, prequel, sequel, parallel sub-stories etc…

frankly, i thought it was a truly excellent game (aside from the hideous ending boss battle and the lack of choice stuff at the big reveal) and a sequal will only work if it's a prequal. the fall of rapture. it has to be that and frankly i hope that they make an original storyline and storytelling techniques rather than rehashing almost everything from system shock 2
