Heavy Rain dev: Don't retry - deal with it!

Quantic Dreams boss demands you deal "with the consequences" of your actions
Heavy Rain is unique. Its story continues even if your character dies. This is super intriguing for several reasons.

So does that mean you have no chance to retry sections in case things didn't go the way you wanted them to? How can a game carry on if you die? Who really did shoot Bobby Ewing?

Quantic Dreams main man David Cage explained things a little to us. The good news is there will be a checkpoint system that'll let you retry, but Cage begs you not to rely on it.

"Yes, there will be the opportunity for players to reply as much as they want from where they want, but we would really like to encourage them not to do so - to continue to play with one story bearing with the consequences of their actions," he told us.

"This is what's exciting about it," he added. "This is a story that you told. It's pretty unique. So why would you want to do everything perfect and change what you've done. You will be able to redo what you like but we recommend not to."

The plot thickens. And appears to be made up as you go along...

I wish that I could 'retry' a couple of dates that I went on! But seriously, this does sound interesting and I, for one, will try to play the game as intended. At least that way I will be able to play through the game differently next time.

Not only are they trying something new with this title, they are trying a LOT of new with this title... Definitely one to watch.
_Marty_ on 22 Sep '08
I can't see this as being anymore than a gimmick. What happens when your character dies? Do you take on the role of another character? how many characters do they have to take control of? Do all of these characters all have their own storyline which can alter itself to match with how and when your character died?
leefear1 on 22 Sep '08
Sounds like one to play through a few times, and it sounds like it'll be a very different experience each time...
badgerpog on 22 Sep '08
Well although they discourage it, at least they leave you with the option to retry parts of the game.

Hear that, Burnout Paradise?! Razz

Read the interview and review in Edge on this last month and it does sound great and innovative.

The idea that if the central character dies doesn't mean that the game ends but rather that it continues to tell the story only without that character and you continue using a different character is definitely "thinking outside the box", or at least I can't remember another game that has taken that approach.

Will defo. have to loan a PS3 to play this if it does live up to its potential!

From the previews i have read on 1UP (there hammering it over there) it looks like it will follow Sirens lead in that you will play the game through multiple characters.

My glass is deffo half full although I do need to actually see it in motion before ill make my mind yup proper. Innovation is innovation, even if it is gimmicky.

The answer to all those questions is 'yes'. Ha ha, reminds me of Bruce Almighty! 'Smite me, oh might smiter!'
Mark240473 on 22 Sep '08
This sounds great, it should allow the player to really feel like an integral player in the progression of the story, a feat that few games achieve.

Well if they have developed a automated script writer which can create storylines on the fly then we do not need to ever worry about another hollywood writers strike! Also if you keep on dying then they could need hundreds of characters ready to take over! (admittedly it would probably mean that you are a very poor gamer, but it could happen).
leefear1 on 22 Sep '08
Some games should not have the option to replay sections. It'd suit games like Fable down to the ground. I know forcefully saving would cause technical isues when people try to cheat their game by powering off, but that is easy to get round. Save data server-side (mmorpg style).

Of course those servers cost money, but it is a great way to boost the emotional investment someone has in there character/story.
Asaron on 22 Sep '08
Sounds like this could be an amazing game if they can pull it off!

The only way i can see this working is if there isn't a main character that you play as and it's more a case of the story itself being the main character, for example in the scene we've been shown (the woman and the maniac in the house) you could either escape with evidence, actually kill the man in self defence or be killed yourself. Then maybe you would take control of a detective and play that role but depending on what happened in the house it would be different. if you succeeded in getting out alive with some evidence then you might work with the woman to take him down, but if you died then as the detective you could be investigating the murder of that lady!

I dunno realy but i'm gonna keep an eye on this one anyway and see how it looks once more info has been released!

bearing with the consequences of their actions
right, 'cos that just sums up the mentality of so many internet users... Laughing

I think it's pretty naive to think that many people will play without falling back on save games, I think they'd have to realise that the game would get panned if it didn't have a regular save available.

I remember the original Alien Vs Predator game, no save game within the levels on that one - the devs wanted the players to feel the tension and fear the next wave of aliens. Of course, the players all whined and whined for a save option (which I think came).
Moral of the story though is that most gamers don't want that kind of challenge, they want things to play out the way they desire it, so most players in Heavy Rain will no doubt fall back on a save any time something doesn't go the way they want - so most will probably never experience the story from a different characters perspective.

I'm with you on needing to see more of this title before making a choice sounds like the devs are really trying on this one.

pity.. would like to see a review for this game. I'm not sure if what way this game is going to go.
voodoo341 on 22 Sep '08
I think this'll sell plenty, I know I'd want a shot of it. I don't really get the "if you die, you keep going" angle though. Surely if I died tomorrow, I wouldn't really continue through life... I don't know how much I like the idea of switching to another character if death occurs. And what happens if you're a bit emo and continously kill yourself....do you ever run out of characters?!

I can see this being a sort of good to very good game, however I just get that annoying feeling that the game'll not live up to the hype it's created. I would love it if these annoying feelings were wrong though. And if it does turn out to be amazing, I'd like it bundled with a PS3 please!

I reckon this'll flat out be the badgers nads! It's just gonna be like an interactive film where you control the story of all the characters! Be like those crappy choose your own adventure books that were really cool for some reason! I truly reckon this'll be pure gold and for those who liked Farenheit, it'll probably be even better! And for those that are a bit sceptical about the dying and carrying on with it thing, again, it's like a film. People die in films all the time, story goes on. I guess it just means that there wont be a definitive main character, just a lot of characters who will probably be striving toward similar goals....maybe? ^_^

I adored those Fighting Fantasy books! My favourite was 'Warlock of Firetop Mountain' - being the first in the series, I think - oh, and 'Deathtrap Dungeon'. It's amazing to think that Ian Livingstone now works for Eidos, but has not used any of his books for a new IP. Then again, I am sure the idea of Tomb Raider was inspired by those books.

I remember those books - the one I always single out was one called 'Creature of Havoc', that was cool....well, when I was about 9. There were the big Greek mythology ones too - I remember there was a series and one of them was 'At the Court of King Minos'.

They did release some FF games too - there were some early-mid eighties ones that came out on the Commodore 64 etc and 'Deathtrap Dungeon' made it to the PS1...I think they planned to make more, but it didn't do brilliantly.

I had tons of those books - and weirdly, dug them out of my parents place for a bit of a nostalgia trip only a few months back.
Some of them are awesome, and really deserve games to be made of them - and not sodding Deathtrap Dungeon either, which is actually a pretty poor example. House of Hell, Vault of the Vampire, Appointment with F.E.A.R., Armies of Death, these are the cool ones.

After seeing the trailer and reading the comments I'm wondering if you can control *any* of the characters who appear in the trailer? For instance, you're the woman at the start, the killer kills you but you let out a scream as he stabs you (he's carrying a knife in the trailer). One of the women outside hears the scream and decides to investigate. Or maybe the two women are too far away to hear the scream, but one of the two children playing hears it and decides to have a look. Or perhaps you switch to the POV of the killer.

Pure conjecture of course, but if it's not all hot-air then it could be very interesting.
