The Xbox 360 has cleared six million consoles sold in Europe, Microsoft has revealed.
The new number puts Microsoft's console above Sony's most recent data for the PS3, which said in May that it had sold five million consoles in Europe, and boasted outselling the Xbox 360. We've left a query with SCEE for the most recent data.
Microsoft recently cut the price of the 360 in Europe, bringing the Arcade SKU down to £129.99, the 60GB Core to £169.99, and the gargantuan Elite to £229.99.
Microsoft claims that the price cut - along with new 'mass market' games like Lips and Scene It? - will "set the stage for a record-breaking holiday season" in Europe.
"We're supporting this momentum by putting launch-level investment into a European advertising campaign, launching this week, which shows how Xbox 360 is changing the way consumers experience entertainment," said Chris Lewis, Microsoft VP of Interactive Entertainment Business, EMEA.
Total worldwide Xbox 360 currently stand at 20 million units. It still hasn't cleared the first Xbox's total number...
I don't understand all this recent fascination with console sales. If anything, only the Wii has sold an impressive amount so far. This tit-for-tat between 360 and PS3 sales is getting tiresome and neither console has set the market on fire. When either one of the consoles reaches the 100 million mark, then I will sit up and take notice.
I know that it is ironic to complain about this, having just posted a comment regarding console sales, but I'm sure most people on here feel the same way nowadays.
they still call it the ultimate console yet its not talk about being big headed and blind. dont start about copying every other company under the sun we know who's the worst
It will be interesting to see how the new "Xbox Experience" dashboard et al will affect figures.
I read on Joystiq that the whole purpose of dashboard is to attract more European users. Apparently, Europeans as a whole respond better to the casual, non-hardcore aspects of gaming - obviously there will always be the hardcore, but all you need to do is see how many cretins have purchased a Wii to see that they have a point.

Really? Is the dashboard really considered 'hardcore' currently? Madness.

I can't see how a new dashboard will ramp up sales considerably. I don't think casual users consider a dashboard layout when they purchase a console. The Wii has sold well because of the interface; using the Wii-mote. If the 360 sells more in the coming months it will be because it is cheap as chips and folk can't get hold of a Wii. I reckon Sony will just soldier on with their current price-point, to try and recoup their initial losses. I very seriously doubt Sony will outsell the 360 this xmas, but I don't think they will be that concerned as long as they are earning profit. Afterall, it is a marathon and not a sprint.

By the time they've experience the dashboard they will already have bought the console. I've never heard of anyone buying a console just to experience the dashboard. To me the dashboard should be like a good operating system in that its so easy to use that you're not even aware you're using it (if that makes sense). It's just a system to allow to use your console.
From the story I'm surprised to hear the PS3 has sold over 5 million consoles in Europe already.

It really depends on how they are going to market it, if they bombard us with adverts on the TV about this new update, showing the capabilities of the new dashboard and what your ordianry Joe Punter can do with it, whose to say it wont help sales.

I don't think its that the dashboard is hardcore, its more to make it easier to navigate and use, especially for those who perhps aren't so technically astute as your more traditional gamer.

I agree. In fact, not sure I knew what the 360 dashboard looked like before I got one - and I certainly don't know what the Playstation 3 one looks like. It's just not a big selling point as far as I'm concerned - hence my reaction.

I should imagine that Sony will probably counter that with HOME adverts. It won't make a blind bit of difference to sales in the long run. I mean, most casual users can pretty much find their way around a PC nowadays, so no dashboard is going to be a deal-breaker in reality.
Well in August the PS3 was either 5.8 or 7.8 million.
Have the video on my PS3 at home, figures were released at he German Lipzeh or whatever it was called.
Either way Sony have done pretty well to catch MS after a 1.5 yr lead!!
Depends how you look at it. If you consider that the PS2 sold as many as it did, and many of those people would be waiting for the PS3, then it's actually bloody surprising the PS3 isn't doing significantly better than it is. Horses for courses and all that.

Too true and I think that could make a difference to the sales of the PS3 as well.
If an advert came out in the run up to Xmas showing a few AAA games, the ability to down movies, partying up with freinds to play games or view photos etc then I think the mass market would pick up on it big time, especially if the starting price is Ł129. People will buy anything if its put across to them in the right way, I suppose we'll just have to see what their marketing campaign actually looks like.
Why oh WHY have Microsoft ditched the 20 gig console and yet kept the Arcade version around? That's just f**king stupid...
The 20gb drive isn't worth making anymore. HD technology has improved making larger drives cheaper and flash memory now owns the smaller gb ranges. It's a bit like trying to buy a CRT monitor for your PC now. No one makes them anymore. You can pick up a 32gb USB pen drive for less than Microsofts 20gb HD selling point.
100% behind you with the f**king stupid and wish Microsoft had include a HD in all 360's from launch (along with a HDDvd drive but that's another story). They did it with great success with the original Xbox and it was a fantastic console. I would like to see a 50% reduction in the RRP for all Microsoft HD's.
I think what people have got to remember is that the PS2 didn't sell 120 million in 2 years! It took several years for the PS2 to become the success that it is today.
Another point I would like to make is that the majority of console owners don't play games online. The overall success of a console will be its price, wealth and breadth of games and marketing strategy.

Yeah i understand what your saying but the PS3 didnt get off to a good start and alot of consoles can be sold in a yr and a half.
Eith way us as the consumers benefit from good sales so i really dont care who sells more. But honestly though MS reached this figure a long time ago in Europe!
Considering the 360 was released nearly 18 months before the PS3 it should be wiping the floor with it, not racing neck and neck.
Microsoft had a great opportunity to be the leading console, but they squandered it with rushed hardware design. A 1 million lead by them is a sign of failure.
I live in Greece and I own a 360 and I know a few people that own a 360 but nobody that has a PS3. I ask the PS3 fanboys here why they don't have a PS3 and they say that it's too expensive but when I tell them to get a 360 instead they say "NO".

First out does not equal guaranteed success - just look at the Dreamcast.
Not one of the big three consoles this time is a 'failure' - far from it.

it is all good lowering the price but the add ons are still so expensive it is Ł60 for a wi-fi adapter and it is Ł100 for a 120gb hdd c**ts
Not a week goes by without this being mentioned - usually by me Here's hoping more and more people remark on it, and Microsoft actually take notice. I'd really like to buy a new HDD, maybne the 60gig one if it's ever released, but the price of them is f**king nuts. I can almost buy a new Xbox for the price of the 120 gig HDD. As you say, c**ts.

I had to buy a set of home-plugs to get my 360 online because the bloody wi-fi adaptors had been recalled. Luckily the plugs only cost me 30 quid and work much better than wi-fi anyway.

It may have lost something in the translation and if it has I apologise but if nobody in Greece has a PS3 where did you find the PS3 fanboys?
i think you can get a 120 gig hard drive for Ł60 in comet
still too expensive tho
60 quid is a lot more reasonable though. Gives me hope that the 60 gig might be in the 20-30 quid range...
Does the transfer cable come with the HDD, or do you have to buy that seperate too?
The transfer cable comes with all HD drives and so it should with the price of it! I too also struggle with the 20G drive.
I have something like 2.4 gig left in mine. I worry that the new dashboard will be huge, and push me over the edge. Though, that *should* go into the bit apportioned for system, no?
I wonder why they aren't selling the 60gigs seperately yet.
"Microsoft claims that the price cut - along with new 'mass market' games like Lips and Scene It? - will "set the stage for a record-breaking holiday season" in Europe."
Can't seem to remember seeing Scene It blitzing it in the sales charts at anytime since release,Buzz does though constantly.
As for Lips doubt it will ever come close to Singstar.

Maybe he is talking about Sony fans who will not buy a 360 no matter what, and they do not have the funds for a PS3? So they are waiting for the PS3 price to drop maybe.
