PS3 and PSP sales are well ahead of where Sony expected them to be at this time of year, according to Jack Tretton, head of the company's US PlayStation business.
Sales are so far ahead of target that Tretton's confident of meeting the company's targets even if the current economic crisis leads to a slowdown in spending, which might be just as well as PlayStations could be in short supply this Christmas.
"We are tracking at 100 percent up over last year," he told Reuters. "... About 30 percent ahead of where we should be. So sales could slow down and we will still hit our number.
"I'd say we are able to meet somewhere between 80-90 percent demand, based on how things are trending," he said, adding that any product shortages wouldn't be "drastic".
Sony expects PS3 sales to hit ten million units, and PSP to shift 15 million, by the end of the business year in March 2009.
"Well if your that far ahead of where your projections estimated you would be how about dropping the price down a bit."
No. If your console is struggling to shift, then you need to lower the price to pick momentum back up and encourage more sales, if your console is doing well (i.e. 30% ahead of target) you leave the price alone as it's doing good as it is. yes a price drop would be nice, but from a business point of view I can see why they are not changing it.
Well i guess they have to keep their chin up somehow in the recent 360 sales boom.
I'm sure comments like this and recent comments like "the ps3 is only using 30-40% of its potential" will keep the fanboys happy.
Of course the majority of users know what's really happening. Sony need to drop the price of the ps3 or a bleak xmas period is ahead for them.
If Sony are on track to hit their targets, then that is good, isn't it? Why would they drop the price when they're selling as many units as they expected? I'd give Sony more credit, because in light of the 360's recent sales surge, as well as the Wii's phenominal success, the PS3 has done alright for itself. And let's face it, MS only brought the price of the 360 down because they had to.
I've always said that it is a marathon and not a sprint. And if you believe that Sony will have a bleak xmas, then you're obviously mad.
Exactly- it's doing 'alright'. So why the shortage at christmas? It hasn't exactly been selling in Wii type numbers has it? Or was I sleeping that day?
I seem to remember MS saying that there were a shortage of 360 consoles not that long ago- but I still saw plenty around everywhere.
Not this strategy again. "It's gonna be tough to get one at chrimbo kids- so get one while you can!"
Surely a company as big as Sony would be able to produce enough consoles to hit demand? I smell a whiff of Uwe Bollox... and wee.
possibly using the same tactics as microsoft did in asia..and it worked
when some pro hacker allows copied games to be run from pen drives similiar to psp...ps3 will be the biggest selling console without doubt. before u start bitching..yes pen drives have insane storage spaces now..
It's selling more than they planned for so why would they reduced the price? Why sell something for Ł129 when you can sell it just as well for Ł299?
You would have to believe what he sadi to be fact though, I dont think anyone truly believes that after more than a year on the marketplace the PS3 would be last out of the 3.
With the price of a Wii and 360 now pretty similiar, for your Joe Public consumer why spend double the amount of cash for an Xmas present this year.
I just find it hard to believe anything that comes out of microsoft and especially Sony (when they let their stupid marketing VP or whatever he is loose with a press release) in terms of sales. They both seem to be trying to save face as Nintendo rule the sales/PR.
And they can talk all they want about HD and true next gen, the long term etc etc, but MS and Sony are about money and they would kill for Nintendo's figures!
I remember thinking that PS3's were going to sell out at launch, then I had a rethink. I was thinking about doing the cardinal sin of buying one and flogging it on ebay. I wish I had though as I would've got a free 42" LCD screen for my troubles!
I haven't even played my wii for months (mainly because I hammered it there and then when all the games were coming out) and I love my 360, but lately all my posts seem to be about defending the wii. God knows why!?!? I don't think I'll be able to defend it if theres nothing decent in six months when the 360/PS3 are getting GoW2, Fallout, LBP etc etc though.

Again I have to disagree, from the 360 point of view it has a massive head start for this gen, so yes I would believe that PS3 would be 3rd, and, that makes it even more of a good job when you realise that PS3 lead 360 in japan, and are pretty level in the UK. If you was to stop selling 360's for a year, and carry on with PS3's to catch up on time they've been out, then we'd have an interesting story

Compared to microsoft and nintendo i fully expect Sony to have a bleak xmas. I think the other consoles will far outsell the ps3 over the holiday period.

Totally agree. But I don't think we can expect sony, or nintendo or microsoft for that matter, to come out and say "yeah, we f**ked up." Sony seem to have been infected by arrogantbastarditis even more so than early 90's Nintendo. All this talk of 10 year lifespans as a strategy is a get out clause for poor performance; the PS1 and PS2 had 10 year lifespans because they focused on putting out the hands-down best games console with the best games support, not because sony decided we would all follow their commands like sheep.
Fact is, the original Xbox is my least favourite console but I would take a 360 over the PS3 any day. Brand loyalty has got f**k all to do with it.

Sony have to bring the price down.
you're making the assumption that all three consoles were released at the same time. Compare like with like.

Completely agree man. This 10 year life span thing was more of a happy accident than anything else.
I wonder if this is in response to Microsofts recent 'sales up 200+%' article. It's no surprise to me to hear one of them respond to the others (almost certainly incorrect) claims.
What are sales projections anyway? Finger in the air, complete guess sorta things. I.e., worthless.

Thats kind of my point, the 360 had already been out a year before the PS3 hit the market and over the last year they sold the same amount, about 1 million each.
I personally thought that the PS3 would have taken over the sales of the 360 for the last year as I thought the majority of people who wanted to buy a 360 would have already bought one. Next years growth will be most interesting.

What I find funny about both announcements is peoples willingness to believe either Microsofts or Sonys statements at total face value. If you take Microsofts the other day. A +200% increase in sales sees the 360 outselling the PS3 by 2 to 1 in the last two weeks. It doesn't take an mathmatical genius to work that back and realise that a 200% increase in sales means that the PS3 must have been outselling the 360 by more that 2 to 1 in the last set of figures. Did no one find it strange that the statement had no hard figures?
Now someone from Sony makes another vague statement and post after post pours out the same old tired rhetoric. What did you want him to say? "well you know feck Sony I play the Wii myself and it's fantastic!" a Sony spokeperson stated today. It's not going to happen. Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo are in the business of making money. As much of it as they can. All three are very, very good at it. Christmas won't be bleak for any of them. If you don't like it, move on.
It's b******s. Who cares how well they're doing compared to their own internal predictions?
The only thing that saddens me about this whole generation is how Sony took the biggest headstart in the history of video games and p**sed it away, while mortally wounding the Playstation brand at the same time.
140 million PS2s vs 24 million Xboxes vs 21 million Gamecubes, last time around. They've reportedly already lost more money on developing and manufacturing the PS3 than they made on the PS2 during it's heyday.
Here's hoping they get their heads out of their bottoms when they design the PS4 and don't do any last minute redesigns when they see the competition again, or the Playstation brand is going to wind up as little more than a footnote in the history of a Nintendo and Microsoft dominated industry.

you can't compare sales figures for the PS2 and the Xbox. One is still for sale and the other one was prematurely ended.
I'd already anticipated that one and done the research. 8.5 million PS2s were sold in the 18 months between the PS2 launch and the Xbox launch.
Over the Xbox life: 24 million Xbox vs. approx 92 million PS2s (low estimate of PS2 sales.) - leaving aside all sales before the launch of the Xbox and after it's death.
Point that Sony were doing better with the PS2 than the PS3 in comparison to their competition at the time still stands much to everybodys complete lack of surprise.

I agree - like I said in my post above, these are almost certainly incorrect claims. And by incorrect, I mean 'facts' that are full of spin.
Stop complaning about the price, PS3 has a built in blue-ray and dere going for Ł300 alone. PS3 is value for money imo even if its not affordable. As for the 360, its in trouble, its retail price is Ł130 and its still getting outsold by a console that sells for Ł180 and its suppose to be superior, If ps3 was at Ł130 it would muller the 360 sales at Ł130, their gonna be pratically giving it away if it gets cheaper.

I think you're onto something there, you can't get a 360 with an HD and a BR player for Ł300. Yet Ł300 is still a lot of money, especially for a games console and I bought a games console, not a BR player. Others will want both.
I have no plans to buy a massive TV so BR as a film medium is of no interest. If it leads to better games then that is something different.
Is the 'in trouble'? I don't think any of the consoles are. You could say the PS3 is in trouble as it's relying on brand loyalty at the moment. I don't agree with any of those statements though!
Sony need to do something drastic this xmas cos with the 360 price drop and massive advertising there gonna kill ps3 sales along with the wii which is garunteed to sell out! Why don't they ever plug any games I never saw anything to do with gta 4 on ps3 yet there were tons of advertising on 360 same with mgs4 hardly and advertising there hopefully sony pull there finger out and advertise LBP like the game deserves and even a Ł30 price cut maybe with LBP would boost sales alot!
