KOTOR MMO to be revealed soon

BioWare's online Star Wars game to be unveiled in a matter of weeks

BioWare's Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic MMO game is set to be 'officially' unveiled later this month, CVG has learnt.

The long-awaited online Star Wars - perhaps the games industry's worst kept secret - is being developed by BioWare Austin, which has been tinkering away behind the scenes on the title for over two years.

Officially the company hasn't admitted to any sort of Star Wars link with its MMO, but EA boss John Riccitiello let slip earlier this year that the RPG developer was in fact working on the online KOTOR, claiming that it is "quite possibly the most anticipated game, full stop, for the industry."

But it looks like the game won't (officially at least) be a secret for long. LucasArts and BioWare look set to lift the lid on a KOTOR MMO within the next 30 days.

Backing up all this is the strongest confirmation yet (other than EA's boss saying it's in the works, of course) from UK newspaper, The Daily Star, of all places.

A column that appeared last Saturday reports that the rag is soon off to San Francisco to "file an exclusive report on the game", after stating that BioWare is working on "a MMO of Knights of the Old Republic".

Look for more in the coming weeks then.

Damn, just when I was getting into WAR. If this is done properly I might be forced (no pun intended) to swap.
Alex on 2 Oct '08
Why are MMO's in fashion so much now?

Oh thats right, money!

No thanks Bioware, a continuation from the previous games, hell yeah.

MMNO!
StonecoldMC on 2 Oct '08
If it has the level of depth and freedom that SWG had, it could be brilliant.

Personally, I think this could be very interesting indeed.

You just know that BioWare will make sure that this is good - I'm also convinced that, if anyone is going to make a different MMO; it'll be BioWare.

Besides, it's better than no KOTOR at all - surely?

I read this on Sunday in the paper. Four days later CVG, supposedly the place for breaking news, runs a story on it.

What next from the website: "Second World War over in days"?

I might as well be reading Kikizo.

no offense but how can u not want it in mmo form?!it basically means unlimited hours of play?

EDIT: my problem with previous KOTOR was..when it ended i had built this char but the game was finished..with it being a mmo..i can now play forever basically..which is awesome.
btw, single player games are more dead than rod hull...everything is social or with a aspect of online play..deal with it

BullS**t!! Single player games are NOT dead! Are you trying to say that you don't own a game that you sit down and play and want to immerse yourself in without being disturbed by ANYONE!?

I like online play, but it's not the be-all and end-all and some games get away with NOT having it.

If you don't enjoy playing games by yourself and are needy enough to HAVE to play online with someone all the time then you aint a gamer!... Deal with it!!

The problem with MMOs is that you just don't get that same sense of immersion from the story that you can get from a single player experience. Sure there is normally a story there in some type of form, be it just background that you have to look up yourself if you can be bothered, or presented in some type of quest form, but it normally takes a back seat to everything else going on. Should the story be in quest form (most likely) then that will likely mean many months of constant grinding to get anywhere near to seeing most it.

I would have preferred a single player story in a similar vain to the previous two games. This game just will not be the same KOTOR that I remember playing. Sure it may have the same skin, but that joy I had watching the story unfold will be sadly missing.

Another point to note. Do we really need two Star Wars MMOs?
potnoodle1 on 2 Oct '08
What a waste. There's already a Star Wars MMO out there with an established userbase. Why waste what has been one of the best RPG series this decade by turning it into an MMO?
Thanks but no thanks. Guess I'll just wait for the next Mass Effect to take this series place.

Hooray KOTOR! Noooo MMO!
johnman on 2 Oct '08
A KotOR MMO could be interesting. I never playeded the first KotOR and half of the content was cut from the seconded one because Lucas Arts pushed the release date so, if made well this could make for a good game. Not that I would definatly get it though paying for another MMO on top of WoW, no thank.
Aeos on 2 Oct '08
I like MMO's I'd just rather have this game for 360 or just KotOR3 for 360 and PC, I'm busy enough with WoW I play more console games and havn't got a high gaming PC so this is almost a disapointment for me. Sad
Well hopefully KotOR3 will be announced soon aswell. Rolling Eyes
TheKraige on 2 Oct '08
I really wish this was just KOTOR 3 instead of an mmo. There's already loads of mmos on sale and the top ones almost completely dominate the market. I love the KOTOR games, and I would really just like to see KOTOR 3 from bioware not ANOTHER mmo.
CrippledHooba on 2 Oct '08
im happy that we are getting some KotOR, yes i would of loved kotor3 to finish the story, but who knows, that may still come, we are jsut hearing about an mmo that is set in the kotor universe, doesnt mean no to kotor3, though the possibility does seem slim.

poopy, wow, SGworlds and kotor, what will i take, im not that rich lol

Rubbish, MMO's have no real focus, i want games with a start and ending to them, MMO's are the classic 'more is better' theory.
Sounds great but just ends up being rather boring and pointless.
ingy on 3 Oct '08
Get in!!.. Finally an MMO on PS3!.. It's something new, and hopefully it'll be better than the flop of the Gays Unleashed Twisted Evil

ok tell me this, once the game is complete after 4hours play..your £40 is basically sitting in a box which you "might" play again..but you'll gain nothing from doing it.
all single player games these days last about 10mins before its finished and put back in the box.
i tell u what..when kotor was finished i was so gutted because it was pointless playing again.

BeauBeau wants no MMO

you mean you didn't play through it again going the other side of what you had done. KOTOR needs to be completed on both light and darksides. i've completed both games numerous times and if i could find decent copies of them i'd still be playing them on the 360. they are the only RPG's that i play. apart from mass effect which i wouldn't really call an RPG

Yes, that is very true and in no way the most ridiculous thing I have heard all day.

The reason the single player elements of some games are getting less focus is because developers feel they have to put some sort of multiplayer features in there. This doesn't mean it's better, just that it's the current trend. You could just as well go back ten years and say "All games from now on will have bullet time and a stealth section. Everything else is crap." Current evidence might have supported your claim, but time would have proved you wrong.

What, so you've never read the same book more than once? Just because you've played a game through once doesn't make it any less good the second time, or the third and forth. In fact you can pick up on pieces of info you've missed the first time through and take it a little easier.

With KOTOR, it was that journey from beginning to end, and the way your decisions effected what happened that gave value to the game, not how great your stats were when you finished it. Then yeah, if you wanted you could go back and do it all over again, and watch events take place as you made different decisions.

Don't belittle the single player game just because it's not for you. There is nothing wrong with a single player experience, nor is there anything wrong with a multiplayer experience. It's just different styles of play at the end of the day, and each lend themselves, for better or worse, to different types of game.

what p**ses me off is the sudden omission of local multiplayer

so many games now days have an online component, so why not include some kind of multiplayer that i can actually play with friends?

so basically when im round my girlfriends house to play against each other we have to own a console and tv each and fight each other over live?

how redunk...
james17_17 on 3 Oct '08
Bring back split screen!! Ahh those were the days.

You've got a fair point though. Multiplayer with friends at home is becoming more and more the focus of party style games.

Rod Hull is dead??!?!!

*sobs* Crying or Very sad

I'm no MMO player...

But how in the name of the entire galaxy can the announcement of a perpetual Star Wars online world not be great thing?? Shocked
shimrod on 3 Oct '08
I doubt this would arrive on XBox or PS3. If it does it is probably going to be dumbed down so much that it will be crap.

I will reserve judgement until I see the vid, but knowing that BioWare are masters of RPGs, and knowing the amount of time that they have been spending on this and how tight-lipped everyone has been, I am quietly hopeful that they will not screw it up.

SWG has been dying a slow and painful death ever since the original CU was implemented. It was well-rumoured at the time that Lucasarts were going to pull the plug on SOE and look elsewhere.....this is the result.

If they can somehow implement the community feel and free playing aspects of the ORIGINAL SWG (the ONLY game to have had it), then this could be their crowning glory.

The breaking of WoW's domination in the MMO game has been long overdue....I hope this is the one to do it.

I shall despair though if they announce that this is porting to consoles too, it just won't work...
