According to a report in the hardware press, Microsoft is set to announce plans for an external Blu-ray drive for Xbox 360.
According to the report, Toshiba-Samsung Storage Technology Corp has picked up a contract to manufacture external Blu-ray disc drives for Xbox 360. A price of $100 - $150 is being suggested, although the story says this number is "rumor".
Microsoft's short-lived flirtation with Blu-ray rival HD-DVD was widely seen as a tactical move against Sony's Blu-ray drive; one that failed to stem Blu-ray's victory over the rival format.
Now Microsoft is seeking to bridge a gap between its machine and PS3, by offering Blu-ray as a relatively inexpensive add-on for Xbox 360. Edge is chasing Microsoft for a comment.
Can't see this happening, or even the need for it to happen. Anyone who wants a Blu-Ray player at this early stage in it's life will have already bought a PS3.
ps3 is pretty much your best bang x buck^-1 for a bluray player often awarded "best player" (although it is slated quite often) and no-one likes addons.
It'll also stop 360 hardcore fans from buying a ps3 just for the bluray option(microsoft doesn't want to see loyal 360 owners jumping ship to sony). The hd dvd add on drive was never going to used for games though(so they said), so if a bluray drive came out i'd expect it to follow suit. It would be more interesting to the public if optional games started to turn up in the future on it(like metal gear etc).
Having said all that, with the new nov dash update coming out, games will be installable to hard drive. I'm not sure if that means you can install the whole game(like on a pc)to hd, or whether it'll mimic the ps3 and it's small hd installation for certain games. If you can install the entire game to hd then a bluray for the 360 is pointless(from a gaming perspective), assuming you have a larger 360 hd of course.
I disagree- while I'm still pessimistic this will happen, there is definately a market for it. I recently relegated my 32" 720p TV to my second xbox and bought a 42" 1080p display. I'm now considering either putting together a media center PC, or buying a PS3. If Microsoft provide a cheap, high quality alternative then to be honest I'm sold.
I'm sure there are quite a few people in my situation too, especially with the freefall prices of HDTVs.

Unfortunately, that wouldn't work.
The problem is that you still need to have the CD in the drive in order for the games to work - the installation option is purely for loading speeds and things like that. A game like MGS4 would still require multiple DVDs and you'd still need to change them when prompted.
I will be using it for games like Guitar Hero - as my brother pointed out, if you check the GH: Aerosmith demo on Live, you can see how quick the songs are to load when on the HD drive (not to mention relieving some strain on the DVD Drive)...would be great for Street Fighter 4 too!
I've got a 720p tv and had a PS3 with a few Bluray discs.
To be honest, the difference between DVD upscaled and Bluray on 720 wasn't overwhelming, so I think I would wait until I upgrade my TB to 1080 that I would bother getting a Bluray add-on.
Saying that, it would be another string to 360's bow - particularly if the one thing that swings it for people is the PS3 having BR.
This is great news for all of the hordes of existing Xbox owners out there who want to buy into Blu-Ray without having to waste their money on a PS3.
This is also great news for Blu-Ray, because at the moment it's basically only PS3 owners and a tiny minority of AV-hardcore early adopters of stand-alone players who are keeping it afloat.
If they can get the Xbox crowd buying those discs as well the format might not die out as quickly as a lot of industry commentators have been predicting it will lately.
Finally, this is great news for me as it means I'll be able to ebay my PS3, get a bargain priced Xbox and still play the couple of Blu-Rays I own, and be able to enjoy a superior choice of games at the same time.
Something that nobody has mentioned is that every Blu-ray disc purchased is money in Sony's pocket. The technology is theirs (partially) and the films are theirs. M$ have to be pretty sure that they have dismissed PS3 before they bolster Sony's finances by encouraging the sale of more Sony products.

lol how much do microsoft pay you to spread propaganda?
MS make a net profit of nearly 20 billion dollars a year, I don't think they'd be that worried about giving money to Sony.
Besides which, after they bought a decent chunk of Immersion, the whole PS3 force feedback debacle meant Sony ended up indirectly paying a small fortune to MS earlier...
Bang goes the last reason for even considering the lonely black box covered with dust in the corner...get yours on ebay now while it's still worth something!!

For me the last reason was when it was just announced that Tekken 6 is now coming to the Xbox360.

lol! xbox360 = the last period of the megadrive, full of crappy add ones, and copying ideas from superior rivals
even if blu-ray wasn't on xbox360 then it would have been on the xbox3 (or their own version) as the games would not have fitted onto current xbox discs (for the last couple of years we've had continuous reports but most of that does seem to be from sony, supposedly assassins creeds other languages were deleted to get it on the disc).
who cares as long as the xbox does not result to sub-standard games in the future due to disc limitations. at the mo blu-ray is not using its full potential but next gen, it will be
and just to annoy the stupid fanboys, xbox360 blu-ray drive will probs be top of the range and will be quicker reading times!!!! (just to add controversy)

but no digital downloads are the way forward remember, we dont need blu ray! oh wait hold on, people are actually buying blu ray discs and its quite popular, quick lets make some vile atari jaguar cd attachemnt for the toilet bowl that is the 360 what an ugly and noisey blu ray player that would make with its extra drive and with the xbox screaming away like a banshee in the background
oh and those nintendo mii avatars are quite popular, lets make that too!

And then you'll also see that Microsoft's strategy is purely about sales figures, Schizophrenic PR & stealing exclusives, whereas PS3 is about exciting new franchises, fresh ideas & innovation.
Theres 11 unannounced games on the way you know..
M$ 6 months ago: 'We don't do Blu Ray - the futures digital'
Dont really see the point in this, the drive will prob be priced at Ł100 to Ł150 here in the UK and you can pick up a pretty decent standalone player for that.
I'll stick to having nothing hanging off of my Xbox, it just looks untidy.
I really don't see the need for games to be on Bluray. Take MGS4 for example, it needs to install between every chapter, meaning eventually what you need is a bigger hard drive. Is it not quicker to lean forward and swap a disc?
Bluray seems like a flawed technology because of the read times.
Its great for movies but downloads maybe the better and cheaper option, expecially if we all have bigger hard drives!
An add on seems the best option, then you can choose to take it or leave it.

exactly, to late trying to tack it on now, sony already have blu ray sewn up, as nintendo have the casual market sewn up.
but as usual the clowns at m$ wanna try and dominate everything, hopefully google will release an operating system, make them sweat
face it the 360 is utter s**t. since its been launched it has been completely rebuilt. a number of times. now after your 3rd or 4th different cd drive (which all had problems) they bite the bullet and do what they should have done in the first place: add quality sony parts.
HD-DVD haha, f**k sake. cheap s**te. another couple of mil down the drain MS are idiots. stick to spitting out windows cds.
no point in a BR drive for 360 - its just egg on their face, money in sonys pocket and it wont be used for games anyway.
What a complete fanboy clown. Quite clearly you are an idiot. Quality Sony parts? I give you that, the build quality is good but quality Sony software, online, games experience??? give me a break. I have owned a PS3 and an Xbox for ages now and believe me, the PS3 is used as just a DVD player. It really is the poor relation for a real gaming experience.

if its so poor, then sell it and stop complaining you women. you can get a samsung blu ray player for Ł150
Sony part owns blu-ray, this is huge news. Micosoft will be basicly handing money to sony on every blu-ray bought? Interesting move if you ask me. And to the people who say 'blu-ray is no different to upscaling dvds at 720p' i must disagree 100%. To start with blu-rays dont run at 720p they run at 1080p, if you tv cant display this its the tv thats the problem not the blu-ray. And if you see a film that is filmed in HD being run on a blu-ray player, spiderman 3 for example, the difference is huge. There you go.....
The fact is, the 360 is quieter than the PS3 when it comes to playing DVD's, fact. When the 360 plays a DVD it goes into a lower power mode, by switching off excess CPU Cores. This runs the system a lot quieter as it does not need as much cooling. The PS3 gets louder than it is normally when playing a DVD and is definitely louder than the 360 at this task. Well, it is for me.
On topic...
I see that people may be getting ahead of themselves by talking about games being on the Blu-Ray disc. If M$ do have an add-on up there sleeve, this would be for films alone, much like what the HD-DVD drive was for. M$ said that they wouldn't ever put games on the HD-DVD drive and they kept to their word as far as that was concerned.
if the blu ray player for 360 will be necessarily for better, bigger games then i'll be buying it, otherwise i don't need another one, personally i think that developers forced microsoft to go blu, enough of short with tons of extra costly dlc games which should have got all content from beginning, now with 360 a cheap add on won't be a big pain.
its not a fact. the horrendous noise that the 360 makes comes from the DVD drive - nothing else. it isnt the fans.
when you are in dashboard, no cd spinning, then it is nice and quiet. as soon as you load something thats in the tray.... we have f**king blast off!!!!
Go ahead and put a standard DVD film in the 360, listen to the system get quieter that what it does when it's sat at the dashboard. Games are different, they need the drive spinning a lot faster, so it can access the information quicker, therefore, not needing a mandatory install on certain titles to make the loading process quicker.

Oh seriously - put a sock in it.
It is so tiresome seeing you troll these boards looking for an excuse to put in the whole 'my 360 is noisy' stuff. Stick on topic for once.
We get it - you don't like it, fine. Sell it.
You've been told pretty much every single time that you've posted this tosh that others do not have the same experience....leave it at that - the last thing anyone wants is these tired arguments in every single thread.

dont be silly. devs arent allowed to make games that need a HDD - something MOST 360 owners have.
most people WONT have the BR add-on, so do you think they are gonna makes games that only 1% of people can play? - again, dont be silly.
just wait for a bundle final fantasy 13 + blu ray drive for 360

lol, k109, you blatently don't own a 360 do you? And even if you did- you would have sold it by now- but no, you state you have one to try and give your (Sony influenced) opinions some weight. Lame. You have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.
Anyway, as a gamer I have zero interest in this- if it turns out to be true that is. Blu-ray = meh. Unless it actually adds to games in a positive way, which it hasn't so far, then I'd look into it.
But then again I was thinking of getting a PS3 later next year... but will that turn me into a rabid Sony fanboy moron? Hmmm...
k109 is an idiot. He has to keep the noise down as his parents are in the next room. If you hate your 360 that much then just sell it mate, and stop going on and on and on. Reminds me of tams claims that he had both, just so he could slag off MS. I'm sure their are 360 owners who do the same on here. If I hated something as much as you hate the 360, then I'd give it away!
Yes BR developed/owned/licensed by Sony. How many PC's have Sony sold worldwide?? Any guess which OS they have preinstalled on their PC's??? I don't hear 360 owners going on about this, and I'm sure MS earn much more from Windows than Sony will from BR.
I think people making the upscaled DVD/BR comparisons were talking about on a 32" TV. Unless I get a massive house, I can't see the point in much larger than 32". Just means you sit further back from the TV. The chairs and sofa in my lounge move, so I don't have a problem with that.

why doesnt your 360 play DVDs? or is it too loud?
ive been playing wipeout online more than anything on my 360. its just a s**te console.
there is loads of amazing games for ps3. i have 10 great games for it. your the fanboy t**t. at least you use your ps3 for something! i dont even switch the 360 on anymore. its embarrasing.
Well hello again little Troll. Does your Mummy know you are here?
I have more than one room in my house, not sure about you? The PS3 is a superb DVD player, much better than the Xbox. But this is the point, I dont buy a games console to play DVD's! unless of course it ends up being s**te (in comparison to what I already have). As for selling it - not worth it. It can only get better.

Another Troll. Go and play in the PS3 articles.
As I said to the other idiot, it is a superb DVD player. Better than my Xbox. But I bought a games console, not a DVD player. I dont need the money, so why sell it? It can only get better.
BR at 1080p on the ps3 is where were at now.. incase you hadnt noticed.
That is the best thing I've ever read on here. Thing of the past. Can you buy everything on BR? Is it worth buying, for example, a comedy series from TV on BR when it's not filmed in HD and the visual quality is pretty much irrelevant?
People like you are the reason Hollywood makes crap films now - all about big, snazzy HD visuals. Who cares about acting, scripts, cinematography etc??
You go on and on about money. You're like Chad Warden, going on about money and snazzy cars like you're some kind of millionaire.
Elitist snob. Sad thing is, you're probably not even rich. You just spunk money up the wall on consumer electronics because you have no life/rent to spend your money on.
lol alright, alright- you win. Everyone's a tramp but you! Oh dear. I've got a 32" HD tv and a descent surround setup for my 360 gaming/DVD watching do you realise how many soup cans, shoe laces and bottles of liquor I had to trade for it?

no. my 50" draws them in from all angles.
And your award winning personality seals the deal eh? Or maybe they're just using you for your big TV, who knows?
Well it's been fun but I've reeeeaaally gotta do some work.
@k109 Was just wondering if you had a full time job, your own home,girlfriend/wife,kids etc etc,as you're coming across as a sponger living off your parents, enjoying your PS3 hold up in your bedroom and wearing nothing but SONY y-fronts

microsoft lol!
First I'm assuming you're under-15, for two reasons.
1. You use the word lol as a form of punctuation 2. You clearly have no idea about the Mega Drive's 'last period'.
Mega Drive's add-on debacle:
32X - claimed that it could perform 32-bit style visuals with an add-on.
Mega CD - claimed it could revolutionise gaming using a CD drive - for extra storage
So basically that meant that one console could play 3 different types of GAME
360 add-ons: HD-DVD and BluRay (proposed)
So basically these mean that one console can play two types of MEDIA

your right its not a thing of the past. were waiting for paupers like you to get your act together before it gets phased out. even if it werent filmed in HD, least they can be smacked on one, or much less discs.
never onced banged on about money. im not rich. i just hate old s**tty technology. if you buy a HD console you should have the screen to put it into decent use. if you dont care about snazzy visuals away and get a wii.
If people are not rich, they can't afford to spend Ł2k on a flat screen. Well they can if they limit their spending in other areas (i.e. rent).
I could spend that money on a TV and PS3, but no matter how much money I had it wouldn't be worth it at the moment.
Oh, and I do have a wii. Its what I use, along with my 360, to play games on. I have no need for a Ł300 BR player.
If you can install the entire game to hd then a bluray for the 360 is pointless(from a gaming perspective), assuming you have a larger 360 hd of course.
You do realize you can fit up to 50GB on a single blu-ray, right? Even one blu-ray game could completely fill up your console hardrive.
If people are not rich, they can't afford to spend Ł2k on a flat screen. Well they can if they limit their spending in other areas (i.e. rent).
Hello. It appears you are living in the year 2006, when flat screen TVs did indeed cost Ł2k and over. I personally am living in the year 2008, where you can (for example) obtain a full HD 40" TV for under Ł600.
I have no need for a Ł300 BR player.
Hi, it's me (the guy from two years in your future) again! It will probably amaze you to know, but here in 2008 you can buy blu-ray players for well under Ł200. In fact, one of the cheapest models, the BDP-S350, is made by Sony themselves! I know, the future's amazing, isn't it?
Starvinbull you stupid tit, Sony do not make any money from BD discs sold. They created the format they don't hold royalties over each BD sold durh! The money goes to the studio that publishes the disc.
If this is indeed turned on an currently existing Usb ports are not able to be updated to a version that is HDCP compliant then your 360 Blu-Ray addon will be a lovely looking and expensive 'just a bit better than DVD' player

Microsoft have some out and said the rumour is just that... a rumour.
Haha, nothin glieka good ps3 over 360 banter thread!
So Im not the biggest 360 fan but I do love my PS3 - over at a friends last night and hes STILl trying to win me over on the 360 SO we are about to play SF 2 that he purchases off LIVE... it says unlock - his 360 wouldnt let him play a game he had bought unless he signs into LIVE and verified it first... only his net was down - oh well to that. SO, he tries to load up SF3 Anniv. Xbox 1 game... no can do - machine cannot check its firmware for emulation without LIVE for some reason and wont let us play! RIGHT, lets play Fight Night Round 3 (360 game)... 3 drive crashes and unplugging the machine later we play... for 1 match then it was home time.
Oh and the 360 is louder than my PC! The loudest I have heard my PS3, is nowhere near the 360. I wouldnt be getting excited over the machine being quiet when running a DVD seeing as it still is probably louder than a stand alone dvd player.
PS3 - pay one price get everything you ned and more int eh box no add ons needed. 360 - buy whatever edition then get yourself a USB hub so you can connect all those USB add ons. No brainer for me really (didnt even mention the red lights! oh... ooops)
I haven't said anything recently but the likes of k109 drive me mental....It's pure unadulterated fanboyism.
Now on topic, I've always thought the blu-ray drive was a decent selling point for a PS3. To be honest about 6 months ago it was the ONLY selling point on the PS3. With LBP and that amazing looking Heavy Rain on their way I can see that changing. I don't doubt that digital downloads are the way to go, being that almost everyone of joe public owns an apple music/video product now and itunes is probably the main choice of legal downloading.
Just like I'm sure instore CD sales have decreased due to digital downloads, I'm sure video'll go down the same route.
The addition of Blu-ray to the Xbox'll only prolong the life of Blu-ray(which can only be good for PS3 owners) and I wouldn't mind a blu-ray addon for my 360 an Kuro plasma if it was competitively priced. And yes, it's great marketing strategy, buy a cheaper console and get whichever parts you actually think you'd use for extra! Sounds like a plan to me!
Starvinbull you stupid tit, Sony do not make any money from BD discs sold. They created the format they don't hold royalties over each BD sold durh! The money goes to the studio that publishes the disc.
ie: Sony.
Dont know if you noticed but they happen to have all their major films out on BR whereas the other major studios are playing catchup. Spiderman, resident evil, etc etc...
You just spunk money up the wall on consumer electronics because you have no life/rent to spend your money on.
your right its not a thing of the past. were waiting for paupers like you to get your act together before it gets phased out. even if it werent filmed in HD, least they can be smacked on one, or much less discs.
never onced banged on about money. im not rich. i just hate old s**tty technology. if you buy a HD console you should have the screen to put it into decent use. if you dont care about snazzy visuals away and get a wii.
If you play nice, then maybe your parents will buy you a portable TV for your 13th birthday. Even better Xmas is on the way, if you write a really sweet letter to Santa he'll maybe bring you an Xbox360.
