Far Cry 2: Double thumbs-up from official mags

Nine-out-of-10 scores from OPM and OXM for Ubi's latest
Far Cry 2 has grabbed an official thumbs-up, scoring 9/10 in upcoming issues of both the Official PlayStation Magazine and the Xbox 360 Official Magazine.

OPM says: "Whatever happens you'll believe it's a real world and a fantastic setting for the action. It's not as dense or as varied as, say, Oblivion - you'll go somewhere, kill everyone, every mission - but it's utterly convincing and engrossing."

It adds: "We're in a massively exciting period for FPS games and, along with contemporaries like Mirror's Edge, Bioshock and Fallout 3, this is an essential chapter in the new wave of shooters."

Meanwhile OXM comments: "Far Cry 2 is this year's equivalent of Assassin's Creed... when it comes to enveloping the player in exotic sights and sounds, Ubisoft has absolutely nailed it." Read more of that on the OXM website.

Ubisoft, we're sure, will be pleased.

"Far Cry 2 is this year's equivalent of Assassin's Creed..."
Is this actually a compliment?

Haha my thought exactly, I think they mean in terms of graphics, sound and immersion, not gameplay, I hope so anyway.

Laughing Assassin's Creed was a turkey but I don't think it scored just as highly.

Hopefully there will be a demo.

Assassins Creed would have been solid gold had teh design team had time to actually sort out some scritping and mission structure, unfortunately because Ubisoft needed out of the door fast to maintain their yearly profits, there was no time to fix the glaringly obvious 6 mission cycle they had to stick in. Shame, as everything else about the game screamed quality!

Far Cry 2 looks amazing and I for one can't wait Smile

Agreed on both points just hope they can sort the shortcomings out for assassins 2.

There's too many good games coming out Evil or Very Mad

I dont have enough cash for all this!!
Spacereamer on 8 Oct '08
well i guess the guy liked AC then
or this game sucks (prefer the former assumption)

No seriously how can 1 keep up with all this stuff coming out? I might have to take a page out of a WoW players book and totally screw my social life for a month or two just to get back on track

oh ya i heard hmv is giving 4 exclusive missions if you pre-order from them, just felt like passing tht around

At least there has only been a couple of games announced for first quarter 09, think this one and fallout is gonna take half a year to play through.

Sorry, what? Far Cry 2, a new breed of shooters including Fallout 3? Fallout 3, being a proper RPG.

Oh dear.

And Bioshock - a new breed of shooter? It was essentially System Shock underwater.

What a dumb magazine.
zaarin_2003 on 9 Oct '08
lol stupid magazine? If you dont like it why are you here?
mark3284 on 9 Oct '08
Dammit, and to think I've screwed my games buying budget for the rest of this year to buy a new, much needed car.

Methinks I'm going to have to drop bigtime hints to everyone this xmas, just means I wont have chance to get ALL the ones I want! Sad

Damn you recession!!
justy_uk on 9 Oct '08
Thats great news on the one hand! On the other, it's financially crippling!!
wudragon on 9 Oct '08
there are indeed some ridiculous comments in that review, official mags are often full of garbage. and before you ask, im here mark3284 because i wanted to see if it mentioned the framerate!

It's not the money that's upsetting me so much as the TIME! Work are only so patient and I don't think they'll take kindly to "Well, you see, I couldn't come in because I had to finish Far Cry 2 before Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead, Gears 2 and Dead Space come out!... I'll get my coat"
