Church: 'Games are a force for good'

They can help kids make friends, say church and charity leaders
Games are a force for good in today's society, church and charity leaders said at a panel discussion hosted by (ELSPA). Hold on, they said what?

"We now live in a digital age where the nature of playing games has changed," said Martin Houghton-Brown of The Children's Society. "Children tell us supportive and loving relationships are key to a good childhood, we need to equip parents and carers to support children to stay safe when they play in the growing online world."

But while the panel agreed that games can have a positive impact, they also said that games need to be utilised in the right way to get the best results (and don't play GTA).

Mike Royal of the Lighthouse Group, which helps to educate children who have been excluded from school, said that gaming helps to build a dialogue with parents as well as children.

Joseph Steinberg of The Church Mission Society was apparently in agreement with these views too. Not sure what the Bishop of Manchester Cathedral would have to say about that.

Bit of an unfair dig at the Bishop of Manchester when he hasn't actually commented on games...

@trgmr: Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe he was the one that was angry at the cathedral's similarities to the one in Resistance. I think.

While i appreciate Sony's concern to the church and I can understand the church's concern about being painted in a bad light (especially given all of its unsettling past and current press and internal struggles on so many levels). Regardless, both the church and Sony will benefit from this type of publicity and press... as usual! Controversy always seems to draw out the masses in my experience.

Yes but the Bishop (who may or may not be responsible for the Cathedral) hasn't said anything about games. It's a completely assumed viewpoint from one debate, that seems to be more about intellectual property than anything else. There is no reason for the Bishop to not like games, and I know that personally I'd be very angry if people were practically making up my viewpoint on issues.

EDIT: I'm not defending him or anything. I've got no idea what his views are. I just think that so far he hasn't shown anything against games, and so would have no problem with someone from a different church saying they are good.

To be fair you are kinda getting your panties in a bunch over nothing. To the extent that your post bears no real relevance to the comment in question. Worse still you are doing exactly what you claim is being done in the article.

OMG Skullet hates the Church and everything to do with it!!!

That is doing what is being done in the article, taking something related to it and then twisting it a bit so all of a sudden your totally opposed to it.

I don't understand how you think my point is unrelated to the comment, I'm making it clear that objecting to something you are responsible for appearing in game isn't being opposed to all video games. I'm just pointing out something and if anyone is getting their panties in a twist its you, commenting on bad feeling that isn't there.

If you thinks its nothing that's fine. But then don't complain if someone starts saying things like the OMG statement above.

I have googled the bishop and he seems like a real t**t, but its still not fair to assume his opinions.

did you bother to click on the link? or indeed ignore all the (relativly)minor furore over this although to be fair he has not commented on games in general just resistance. perhaps a better publicity stunt would be to do the same in the sequal god knows how the yanks are going to react when their lord jesus christ`s church is blown up LaughingLaughingLaughing

I’m up for the idea of a “Church of Gaming”. In fact I’m going to start writing the good book now...

“In the beginning the Lord created the 386 and gave to the people Wolfenstein 3D and the people did rejoice. Alas there was also much disappointment and frustration as many problems did occur. So the Lord created Creative Labs on the second day and Soundblaster was born and the people rejoiced at the 8 bit sound...”

wudragon on 13 Oct '08
Yes I clicked on the link, my point is he has only commented on one game that concerns his Cathedral, he hasn't condemned all games or anything like that, so there is no reason for him to care about someone saying games are good.

For some reason people seem to think I don't know this, of course I do, think outside the box a bit and realise he hasn't actually said anything at all about all video games being bad. Timmytom has got the right idea.
trgmr on 13 Oct '08
who the hell cares what a church thinks about games? shouldnt they be worrying (alongside every other religion) that theyre becoming more unpopular by the second...
