Dead Space dev studied car crash victims

Looking for realism, EA Redwood Shores turned to the dead for help
EA Redwood Shores came up against this problem making its sci-fi horror game Dead Space. On their first attempt, the team were not happy with their work. So, they decided to take a close look at some real bodies.

Writing for Edge today, exec producer Glen Schofield explains, "In the story of Dead Space, there was a war that happened on the ship before Isaac, the main character, gets there. So he's going to find a lot of nasty stuff, corpses in various states of annihilation.

"We knew this would be difficult to portray, because sometimes gore in games looks cheap and unrealistic. Sure enough, the first few corpses that we did, just weren't convincing enough. I rejected them.

"This sounds horrible, but we had to go look at pictures of car accidents and war scenes and things like that because we had to get it right; we had to portray scenes of terrible carnage and realism. It's a big part of making that experience convincing."

Nice...

Didn't Shiny watch real life executions to help them when they were making MDK? I couldn't quite work out why they would of, that games was full of robots...

Right. So to make scary games you've gotta look at dead people. I find that hard to believe!! Whatever happened to creativity??

Sounds like a bullsh*t marketing ploy to me!!

The atmosphere will be ruined when a dead guy has a steering-wheel sticking out of his butt!

I'm sure theres creativity in there somewhere I mean how many of those dead bodies they looked at came back to life and tried to kill them.

That seems like going a bit beyond the call of duty there. Although, the human race is a curious species. Makes me wonder if they had slow days in the office from getting a little too addicted to looking at pictures of carnage.

i dont think it's a marketing ploy. i mean it makes sense that they would do that. loads of creative endevours use realistic research to draw from.

I like your thinking. I shall try this at home.

"No Darling. I HAVE to. I'm making a game based around pornography!" Wink

Following that thought, maybe the Saints Row 2 team should actually go 'outside'.

What`s got you so riled up? if it is a marketing ploy it`s a s**t one ,and one of the few things EA seem to get right is the marketing ,also from what i`ve seen and read it`s actually quite good oh and the gimmick a decent one too.
