After letting us in on what we can expect the latest firmware updates to achieve earlier this week, Sony has told us to expect the updates to go live today.
Hit this link for a detailed list of what to expect.
Update: As you can see in the comments section below, the update is live. All good so far.
If you've already downloaded tell us how it went. Hitch free? Or did your console fall over and die? Let your fellow PlayStation fans know below.
I've noticed a few changes that not alot have mentioned like the fact that you see online statues of people when you first sign in almost instantly and the playstation store is alot more fluid, and the flash 9 is good and its my fav feature in this firmware but having more then a few windows open at once slows it down stupidly.. But apart from that proud to be a ps3 owner. Because sony listen, might take a while to get off there bottom to fix things at times but when they do.. They do it well.
just installed the new update for the PSP while the PS3 still downloading. the PSN account and STORE was 1 thing i thought the PSP should have once wipeout pulse used our PSN accounts for online play, seems i got my wish, although i never told sony about the idea lol
My update is downloading incredibly fast (for a PS3 update), on a rather slow connection. Have Sony finally stopped giving you the whole legacy of updates to download each time?
Something you might want to try if you're eager to get the FW installed and start gaming as soon as you get home... I've downloaded the update here at work from the PlayStation site and stuck it on my USB key. It's what I usually do when a new FW is released, to save myself the lengthy download times when I get home.
It seems to come down much, much faster when downloading on a PC rather than directly to PS3. Plus there's 2 PS3s in my house so it just makes it easier, can update mine and my dad's with a single download.

You are right - I used to do it this way but it fried my PS3 once and would not boot - it just kept re-trying to install the update and failing. Sony replaced it FOC with a reconditioned unit. It was down to the download file being corrupt on the USB stick, so although painful, I ALWAYS do the update on-line now. Be warned!
I didnt have any problems, but my friend had a problem where when he turned on his PS3, nothing came up but the background. I hope it was just a one off, but this could be a problem.

Where possible I wait a week before doing any firmware updates on my consoles for that reason. To tell the truth I hate firmware updates as they can go wrong on both consoles and on PC.
Why did CVG ask this at the end, was it because update 2.40 on the PS3 'bricked' a few consoles?? are they going to ask this every time a new update comes out lets not forget the 360 update that 'bricked' some 360s, or stop bringing it up every new PS3 update m'kay!?!

How could we ever forget the 360's reliabilty problems (I'm on number 4) when every 360 article thread is full of PS3 owners telling us about it.
