After two years of silence Microsoft and Remedy have finally released a new trailer for PC and Xbox-exclusive "psychological thriller" Alan Wake.
The video was originally shown at the Finish premiere of Max Payne (that's Remedy's other game), but you can now watch it at the bottom of this page. It still looks stunning.
The game tells the story of a best-selling writer who travels to a remote town to help recover his creative flow. Suddenly his wife goes missing and Wake finds his latest work, a thriller he can't remember writing, coming true before his eyes. Thrilling stuff indeed.
"We're working hard on Alan Wake and want to make sure it meets and exceeds the awesome potential," Remedy md Matias Myllyrinne said. "It's still time to focus and we won't be doing constant updates on the progress."
This almost certainly lines Alan Wake up for a release in 2009. Otherwise they're taking the mickey.
It'll be one of the biggest Xbox releases of the year for sure. More soon.

We've been waiting for it for years and overhyped it and the expectations will cause the game to be called pants probably will get around 75% in reviews

Nah, I predict you're WAY off the mark, this looks absolutely gorgeous and actually seems like it might have a half decent story behind it as well..."Good things come to those who wait!", having said that just hope it doesn't end up being "Out of sight out of mind!", come on Remedy, a release date please or failing that, a release Year?
I just hope we get updated regulary from now on. It's been too long. I hope this game turns out brilliant, if it does, I'm picking it up on release. For now though? I'll enjoy November 2008's game releases. They are nearly here! *gets excited*

It's quite an odd one this.
It's been in the pipeline for ages, been referred to as 'vapourware' more than once, been discussed at great length too - but, it's also another one that no-one really knows an awful lot about...they've been incredibly (some would also say frustratingly) sparing in the details and info they've passed off, so can it really be considered one of those over-hyped games?
I'll do what I always do; wait for the reviews...I still think this could end up pretty damn special though - looks like it'll have an interesting story.
At last. I can now relax, the trailer looked brilliant,(in my eyes anyway) very cinematic and very edgy.
This game wont be too everyones liking but if you enjoy a true Survival/Horror and not the new Action/Horror (yes RE5, im looking at you) then I dont think you can go wrong with Mr Wake.
And for anyone that thinks the graphics look dated(what does that advert say again) 'Should have gone to Specsavers'
When It's Done Remedy. When It's Done.
EDIT: On the official site they have released some screenshots that arent from the trailer:
If I see a better looking game (not on rails, not QTE) then we will have some truly great looking games to look forward too (by the way, I dont think we will).
I have not been on teh internetz in a week and missed lots of stuff, like Fable 2 reviews and that Bioshock 2 trailer which got me super excited though I think it looks fake, especially that 2 under BIOSHOCK. Now Stonecold is missing stuff he would be massively excited for like I missed stuff lol.
Well I am interested in this and it looks good from trailer but seeing as it's still about a year away I believe I will wait until then before passing true judgement.
I actually gasped when I saw this news heading. Alan Wake has been my most wanted game ever since I first laid eyes on it so long ago, and the new trailer does nothing to take that away. It's just a relief to finally see something new - can't wait!
It's like they took one part Shenmue, one part Heavy Rain, added a liberal sprinkling of Silent Hill, and baked for several years. Can't say I'm disappointed with that mix in any way.
The trailer looks brilliant in my eyes, and this is definitely one to look out for come 2009. How anyone can say this has been overhyped is beyond me - we've had next to no information on it all!
this game is constantly delayed because they've made to much hype about it and now they're afraid to disappoint us.
You are having a giraffe, right?
Hype? Who? Remedy and MS have barely spoke about Alan Wake in the last 2 years never mind hyped it up.
You have fools like me to thank for hyping this game and maybe some journos that have seen more of it than us (lucky bar stewards!) but no one else. Without doubt I shall continue to spread the word of Alan Wake and hype it up whenever we get some new bits of info on it, so you'll probably read me preaching some more in about .. oh I dont know .. 6 months? Please Remedy, no. No more long waits.
Well, thank goodness! I can now stop working, log off and play COD4!
Play COD4? I couldnt possibly play a game right now . Im just going to watch the trailer on loop tonight like Parma said , Ive watched it a few times already and honestly, im seeing new things with every watch through.

If you think this game has been hyped too much then I'm missing something.
Do me a favour and point me at the expansive screen-shot galleries, video's, previews and dev. interviews because the coverage so far has been less than rationed, more like some tiny morsels & crumbs!
THE FABRIC OF REALITY CANT CONTINUE, i dont accept it
if this isnt a mirage i might fell a small modicom of exictment
Well before you do, have a look at this info I got from a site with the Finnish Magazine interview. Sorry it's long, but come on, it's Alan Wake.
- AW had 4 clear goals for the design: 1) Psychological action thriller 2) Introduces light as a part of the new gameplay mechanic 3) A movie like story, set in a big, free roam environment 4) Must score 9+ from reviews
- No set release date. They'll work for as long as they feel they need to. Quality is the highest priority.
- Remedy consists of only 30 people. (They outsource a lot)
- They couldn't find a suitable engine, so they made their own.
- Their SDK are so flexible that they can test all changes on both platforms as soon as they are made.
- They've taken 40 000 pictures for the game in the northwest US. They might take antoher 40 000 before they are done.
- Story is told like a TV-series, where doing missions advances the plot. Some "episodes" end in cliffhangers, others are slower paced and geared towards character development and showing Alan's past. They want to get that "Just one more episode" addiction in the game.
- The script for Max Payne 2 was 650 pages long (with a page for every mintue of action in the game). The script for AW will be multiple times longer.
- The plot in AW is tied to episodes, but the world isn't. You'll be able to wander around Bright Falls freely and without any artificial rush, but the story won't advance if you just roam the forests aimlessly.
- Lots of exploring and talking to other people can reveal surprising secrets.
- A strong light vs dark theme. A setting sun means bad news for mr Wake. At night you have to find shelter or arm yourself. Light is the only weapon against the shadowy figures, since they are invulnerable in the dark. Too bad Alan is allergic to light (?).
- "What is real and what is just Alan's nightmare?"
- Battles will be desgined with "quality over quantity" in mind. They want the battles to feel special and exciting.
- "The furhter the 'first season of Alan Wake' progresses, the longer the night for the writer becomes"

it's hyped not by devs but by all of you, no one knows anything about it except what they know from few screenshots and a trailer, i think that 360 is lacking proper tpp game.
Going purely by the quick preview movie and the smattering of screenshots floating around, the game itself looks absolutely stunning. It's certainly a very cinematic experience they are going for, hopefully with a story to match. I'd be nice to see some in game action to get a feel for how the game plays, so until then I can't really judge the game. I'm still excited by it though! The strength of its story will carry this game me thinks.

Simmer down my Sony loving devotee...Of course 360 owners are looking forward to the game that is looking to do "something different!" from the norm.
But why get SO excited and eager to lambaste without cause you sad muppet, you've still got the FMV movie "Heavy Rain" or the level designer "Islam deferred - LBP" to keep you interested for now!

I feeling slightly more then a modicom of excitment, you might even say a small amount
Why is he allergic to light, thats like saying your allergic to water!?
The thing that gets to me about this game is that the quality is the most important thing to them, not rushing out an unfinished game to make a quick buck. *cough* EA *cough* Spore *Clears throat*. It's done when it's really done. So what if it takes a few years? As long as doesn't go DNF.
It looks f**king fantastic and I'll be buying it unless it proves to b s**t in reviews. Hell I'll probably buy it even if it scores a 5, the idea behind the story and how it unfolds intrigues me such.

Or what one should possibly refer to as "Perfect Marketing"?
I'm not going to reach the excitement levels of Stonecold until i've seen more than justa few videos but the concept sounds great & i've not seen anything to make me concerned yet... hopefully this can live up to expectations.
this game looks horribly a cheap nasty knock off of heavy rain i can't wait to see there clone version of lbp
eh? this was first shown years before heavy rain was even announced, if anything heavy rain would be knocking off this surely?
why would remedy clone lbp as its not their sort of game? i assume you are talking of MS and Sony even though neither of them made or are making lbp, heavy rain or alan wake?

I was gonna say the same thing. How can a game that has been in development AT LEAST as long as another be ripping it off? If Alan Wake comes out first (entirely possible), will it still be ripping off Heavy Rain? Did Grand Theft Auto IV rip of Saints Row 2?
Concearning the 'Hype' factor in this game. I believe they took a similar approach as the movie 'Cloverfield'. Let out a little teasing bit of information to get us people to start asking questions, get the intruigue level up. If you show just enough of your product to the public, you can get the public to hype it up theirselves. Money on marketing can be spent on the game/movie then... something like that.
I've been waiting on news on this for a while after being worried that it had been canned.
What can I say? It looks absolutely incredible....the voice acting at the very least looks to be spot on and the soundtrack sounds epic.
It's also a very grown up story which makes a change from a lot of games at the moment.
I really hope they pull it off, the game this most reminds me of is Farenheit which had great potential and started off really well turned into a bit of a sham.
If anybody can do it I'm sure Remedy can. The Max Payne's strongest point was it's story and overall noir style.
I am psyched. I'm just hoping it's not another Alone in the Dark
/rant Gamers get a bad enough press as it is: according to various press over the years games cause violence, obesity, slack morals, etc, etc, so please don't let illiteracy be added to the list. Twice in the past week writers on this site have spelt elusive incorrectly - please learn to spell, or at least learn how to use a spell checker. /rant_off
As is often the case nowadays, the game has been vamped up to be almost film like. However if it is anywhere near as good a game, not in terms of sales, just overall, then it will be a great game. It's gonna be incredible or should be as its been in production for several years. This game will blow everyone who is a critic away. Saying this, we can only pass speculation at the moment. We will have to wait until it is finally released, whenever that actually is, before we can really see the true extent of the game. Saying that, from the screenshots and trailer it shows a level of potential, that few games have shown prior to release!
