Sony: PSP-3000 screen problems here to stay

"No plans" to fix scanlines issues in new PSP
Early purchasers of the new PSP-3000 would have been looking forward to the machine's brighter screen, among other things. But, ironically, an interlacing issue with the screen has been discovered, and Sony says it has "no plans" for a fix.

It seems that Sony's effort to combat the blurring (or ghosting) issues of the past screens have inadvertently spawned a new issue; keen eyes have noticed horizontal black lines and interlacing on the screen, as you may see in comparison screens below (from Gamingbits)

But it's not something Sony's going to fix, not at least any time soon, by the sound of a recent official statement:

"On some occasions, scan lines may appear on scenes where brightness changes drastically, due to the hardware features of the new LCD device on PSP-3000. Installed with this new LCD device, PSP-3000 offers more natural and vibrant colors on its screen, but the scan lines have come out to be more visible as a result of improving response time to alleviate the afterimages on PSP-3000," Sony explained (via Wikipedia).

"Since this is due to hardware specification, there are no plans for a system software update concerning this issue."

What are they expected to do, replace them?
Is it a fault, or is it just a side effect of the tech adjustment? Seems like the latter to me, in which case I can't really see what they are supposed to do anyway.

Is it really that bad/noticable though? It's hardly a 40" screen, so how pronounced is the issue?

I picked one up on Saturday and have been using it a lot the last few days. When the image blacks out, say when it's cutting to another image, there's like a faint ghost of the first image on the black screen until the other other image is shown. It's something similar to what you used to get when you turned off an old CRT TV and saw the last image on the screen for a few seconds. It's seen mostly when switching through menus. I've yet to be affected by it in a game.

I get the same thing playing PS2 games on PS3, wonder what causes it, got to be something to do with the upscaling I guess

I don't know but as I never used the older model PSP's before I didn't really notice it. Impressive piece of kit though. Not wishing to turn this into a row using the PSP did make me consider one thing. If it and the DS have wifi connectivity build in as standard how come the Xbox360 doesn't? I spend Ł50 on my wifi adaptor for my 360.

Love the way people are defending this even though Sony have basicaly said "F' you we've got your money so we don't care" again on this the PSP has never been perfect but I'm glad I stayed with my 2000 model now this is just sad, and too think people bitch at MS when they ALLWAYS fix their problems.

It's almost an MS level of shoddiness!

At least MS made an effort to fix their hardware shortcomings... Sony have pretty much refused to do anything about it.

It took court action to make them admit and do something about DRE's on the PS2, will probably take something similar here.

How about they fix the brick hanging on my console. or the fact that i can't connect without testing the connection.

"At least MS made an effort to fix their hardware shortcomings.."
After 18 months of denying they existed, charging people to have them repaired and being threatened with a multi-billion dollar class action law suit.

God bless MS and their altruistic little socks.

The PSP 'problem' you're describing isn't the interlacing fault. You have to look really close to the screen in some games but you can see that the image is sometimes offset as if alternative lines are not quite matching up. PES08 had the same problem on 360 a lot of the time.

As for your WiFI whinge, look at it from a different perspective instead of your Sony sponsored rose tints. The PS3 and Wii Wifi is obviously built into the system and only offer 54Mbps, that is a theoretical maximum therefore a great signal will only offer 30-35Mbps after overheads....that isn't great and it's on the limits to stream video smoothly, it's certainly going to jitter and stall with uncompressed HD.

Have you noticed the speeds of PC WiFi recently? Super-G (2 x 54g combined signals) draft n and increasingly faster WiFi upto and beyond 200Mbps means that the 360 will always have the opportunity for upgraded WiFi hardware. Considering that the PS3 supposedly has a 10 year lifespan that's just another reason why having a choice in this will be the better option in the long run.

Are we going to see you complaining about spending on WiFI hardware if/when the PS3 gets a tech refresh? No, didn't think so.

I am sorry, I have to disagree with you. Why is it fine to sell a Ł60 adaptor to get a feature that should be built in (even my phone has wifi!) and then if it is upgraded I have to buy anohter one. However if it is built in in the first place and they release an upgrade to purchase it is bad? I do not understand what you are trying to say as I would much rather have basic functionality built in from the start. Also Ł60 for what is effectively a wifi dongle is just a rip off. Also when the majority if the world is on broadband speeds of under 10mb a 200mbps wifi adaptor is not exactly going to be too useful.

2 points for you in reply:

1) Internet speeds may only be 8Mbps-24Mbps tops, but data transfer/streaming is a different kettle of fish and requires much more bandwidth. 54Mbps is only just good enough to stream compressed data, if you've got anything else eating into it you're not going to get the best quality. Like I said, considering the PS3 is promoted as a Hi-Def multi-media machine it hasn't got a cats chance of streaming a HD movie, where's the future proof in that?

2) Xbox still has a network port (Ethernet), it's not like the functionality isn't there. Personally I'd go wired every day of the week. I don't own a 360 but I would only use wireless if wired connectivity was totally out of the equation. If you're deadly serious about gaming, you should be using Cat5 anyway at 100Mbps - it's not the most difficult thing in the world to drill a hole in a wall or have a Cat5 cable tacked to the outside of your house...although I understand for some people that it simply isn't an option.

Considering the price of the 360 now, I don't think anyone can really whinge about what you get for your money at Ł99-Ł140.
