Sony: "2009 is going to be the year of the PSP"

Lots of big games in development for Sony's handheld, apparently
Sony says a number of as-yet-unannounced PSP titles will help take the platform to new heights next year.

"... 2009 is going to be the year of the PSP," PlayStation Canada marketing manager Mark Levitan told herenb.com.

"We have Resistance: Retribution coming in February but I've seen a lot of the stuff in development and it is not a mistake by any means to a buy a PSP now," he added.

Levitan's not the first PlayStation exec to promise big things for the PSP next year in the way of more and better games.

SCEA director of hardware marketing John Koller also recently told our sister site Edge-Online that the PSP's in line for big growth next year on the back of major titles.

"We have a number of very strong franchise games on the docket that will be launching next year. We haven't gone public with those, and many third-parties have not yet either because they're concentrating on holiday, but we have a number of very strong titles coming," he said.

We'll just have to wait and see. What would you like to see on PSP next year?

StonecoldMC on 24 Oct '08

2009 is going to be the year of the PSP

Is it b******s.
csdaveuk on 24 Oct '08
They're coming guys, you'll see soon my psp will be worth the purchase you'll see. It'll do more than play emulated versions of crono trigger and FF6.

Its like saying my PS3s going to be used for games rather than DVDS.

Man Sony really have got the potential victory here.

I'm still waiting. think i'll occupy my game time with all the actual games coming out on my 360 and wii.
WHERESMYMONKEY on 24 Oct '08
what about the ps3? shouldn't that be their priority?

Man Sony? Is he like Man Friday only Japanese?
voodoo341 on 24 Oct '08
are you sure they meant ps3, not psp.....
carter1983 on 24 Oct '08
I'm sure Sony do more harm than good with statements like this. How many people use their '2008 is the year of the PS3' spiel as ammunition against them?
You'd have thought they would have learnt that saying something is so doesn't necessaily make it so...

I'm with you, but frankly it's about sodding time it did have one. I got mine nearly 3 years ago now and it's been an average gaming experience at best so far.

what, they given up on ps3? Do they even have a PR department at sony or just a room full of idiots.
King_Elshout on 24 Oct '08
Same old s**t from a Sony marketing clown....just release some decent games and let the people decide whether or not 2009 is going to be the year of the PSP or PS3!
Tonyb on 24 Oct '08
well i hope they do release some decent titles because i haven't bought a psp game for over 18 months. i have also noticed that some game retailers and supermarkets only have a small area for PSP now (if at all) which bascially means nobody is buying anything for it. a bit like it was with the gamecube unfortunately.

Very Happy
Mortey on 24 Oct '08
I've had my PSP since launch and I have less than 10 games. Crisis Core is ok, but I can barely be bottomd with it anymore. Screw the PSP Sony, get the PS3 back on it's feet!
bgriffithsps3 on 24 Oct '08
Would prefer it to be PS3's year really but oh well. Not much I can think of on PSP really, am intrigued though about what these games are.
almanac2015 on 24 Oct '08
Thought that was last year and the year b4 that :/
Trevor_Compton on 24 Oct '08
There are a number of games coming out next year on PSP. Mainly ones from Square Enix (Kingdom Hearts, Final Fantasy Dissidia and XIII:Agito), but obviously Resistance, LocoRoco 2, Patapon 2 are coming out too.
It will be better next year than this barren wasteland of games that we had this year, hopefully. It couldn't get much worse...
wrightandrewjame on 24 Oct '08
The drought of games for PSP is that bad, I'm trying to (hopelessly) downgrade mine. Hindsight is a bastard.

two letter mr psp DS, it may well not sell 500,000 every month in certain land blocks, but it won't fall as low as psp, and when it does i think we will start getting news back end of 2009 maybe of a new nintendo hand held in the pipeline i wouldn't be surprised if there is a new one in 2010, we will see
