Call of Duty gets zombie mode

Four-player co-op with Nazi zombies... no, really
Call of Duty: World at War, the WWII shooters that prides itself on its authenticity, has a four-player co-op zombie mode. We're sold already.

Just revealed this weekend, the zombie mode apparently unlocks when you complete the main campaign mode, and has four players battling against increasingly difficult waves of Nazi zombies. A bit like Gears of War 2's new Horde mode, then.

Clearing waves of Nazi undead earns players cash to purchase weapons, equipment and even barricades to thwart the ghouls' attempts to clamber through the front door and chew your face off. It sounds excellent.

Waves are apparently infinite, but the developer Treyarch says it's only managed to scrape to number 23. So you know it's bloody hard.

Check out the first footage over on Game Trailers.

This sounds very familiar. In fact, isn't this included in another AAA title out on the same day that has been boasting about this mode for 6 months now...

Good dig, CVG!

5-player co-op FTW!

I still think this is a blatant sell-out on the strength of Left 4 Dead and Resi 5 about to come out, and Gears 2 horde mode.

Nowhere in any previous Call of duty title has there been a sniff of zombies, yet all of a sudden here it is. Gritty war drama... comedy zombie killing. There's a strong tie-in...

I guess Activision could've supplied the old Wolfenstein models...

Could be a modern day Wolvenstein!

It would be good if the undead you were fighting were all of the enemies you killed during the single player game, come back from the grave for a little payback. Wink

its typical of you monotinous bastards to criticise and pick at things.
this zombie mode sounds fantastic, attack/defend game varients have been done many more times before.

Why cant you just enjoy this?

If you have a real problem, write into Terry Wogan and let him read out your points of view because im sure of the masses that read this site, most don't want to read it or give to farts what you think.
And Resident Evil isnt due untill March you wrinkly pickle!

....Gits!

i think its treyarch trying to think up an epilogue a little like cod4, something a bit different on the end and of course been treyarch they have no imagination so zombies is the answer

But clearly it has some effect, therefore our job is done.

I just think that it's a remarkable coincidence that GoW2 is out on the same day and suddely they announce that it has a mode pretty much identical to Horde. What makes it more suspicious is how completely uncharacteristic of the franchise this is. Something makes me think they really can't bear to be beaten to the top of the charts for once.

On another note, I do appreciate the term "wrinkly pickle" Laughing

Yeah, but even if they did copy the idea from gears, is that such a bad thing? It seems that it wont ruing the atmosphere of the SP mode as its an extra - and a fun silly extra as well! Should be fun and definitly something to look forward too!

I honestly wish more games did this! I used to love games that threw in extra costumes, levels and fun things to extend the game beyond the basic SP/MP that everyone was buying the game for.

I reckon this'll be a blast!

And now I've just read this on the OXM site:

Senior producer Noah Heller also told us that this mode will have a sci-fi style raygun

Oh, good.

It's basically a teaser of sorts for the new Wolfenstein isn't it?
I like it though. It is GoW2's Horde mode with zombies and minus grunting hulking space marines and should be a lot of fun on Live.

This actually sounds really f**king brilliant.

It's got to be the final straw for me, i'm going to buy this game.

I wanted a mode in cod 4 where you could just mow down waves and waves of bads, and now i have it. I dont care if there ripping off left for dead and gears 2. Gears 2 never had an original idea and Left is a different kettle of fish.
$$johnman$$ on 27 Oct '08
I kinda liked Cod4 but when they go and grab someone elses idea that they have been ranting for months about and stuff it into there game, whats the point in buying the game based on zombie killing when you can get the same thing as well as COD5?
mark3284 on 27 Oct '08
This idea is much older than Gears.

AvP had a survival mode which involved Marines (and Predators if you wished) sprinting to a bunker and holding out as long as possible from infinite swarms of aliens.

I expect others will probably remember even earlier examples of this kind of thing.
Negatrev on 27 Oct '08
A bit like Gears of War 2's new Horde mode, then.

a bit like a shedload of previous modes and games, then.

horde mod3 is t3h InNovat0rrrrr
Rundas on 28 Oct '08
Argh let's just stop with all this 'copying' b******s. For starters there's about a million flash games on the net that are based around this idea - and they are usually zombies.

Secondly, who the hell cares? It sounds great, so don't complain! I'm just not so snobby that i only buy games that are totally original, just to avoid the fact that they may have an idea or two from other things (which all games have) even if they are terrible.

COD5 Best game ever??????????????
timmytom1 on 28 Oct '08
Just to remind everyone that this zombie game mode is an amazing coop game especially if you have a lan party in a basement somewhere. It's great fun with friends. But to my knowledge the first time a game mode like this was introduced was through the Unreal Tournament series. First being either 2003 or 2004 edition and it was called invasion. As i must say was just as hard me and 20 of my friends could only make it to lvl 12. So really this idea has been around for awhile but WaW has taken it into a whole new lvl in my opinion.
