Sony's PlayStation business has been booming over the last couple of months, although the rest of the company isn't doing as well as the platform holder would like.
PS3 sales hit 2.43 million during the second quarter of Sony's business year (July to September). That's up 85% on the 1.31 million sold during the same period last year.
PSP sales rose sharply too, up 23% from 2.58 million to 3.18 million.
Sales of the ageing PS2 declined, down 25% to 2.5 million, but that figure still topped PS3's total.
While we're rolling out the stats, the company also sold over 21 million PS3 games during the second quarter, 11.8 million PSP titles, and 23.1 million PS2 games.
So the PS2 is in decline, but it's still outperforming its successor in terms of hardware and software sales, a whole eight years after it was first released. That's pretty good going in our books.
While the PlayStation business performed well, things were less rosy across Sony's wider business during the three months in question.
The company's overall quarterly profit fell by 72% to $214 million and, according to Edge-Online, its share price fell to a 16-year low ahead of the release of the financial results. Ouch.
Sony sell high-end electronics so in this current climate it's expected they will likely show some form of a fall in profits, it doesnt also help that billions of pounds have been wiped from stock markets in the last few months either.
Im sure the other depts will bounce back when people stop going on about a credit crunch.

I'll give you LBP assuming you've got the time to spend on it. But hold your horses - we haven't yet seen any other Gears 2 reviews (9/10 from OXM thus far only), nor Left 4 Dead (I know it's on the PC, but as far as consoles go it's exclusive).
Of course that is down to personal opinion on which exclusives are better. Are you confirming that the PS3 will be the Best selling console this Xmas Suiv?

The onther thing you'll notice is that the Xbox not only has quality releases too, just like the PS3, but there are more of them. An arguement which is constantly levied at the PS3. The quality of the games is never questioned, its the QUANTITY.

Because some people don't have a PC. That's like saying why buy Resi 4 on the PC when you can get a superior version on a Wii. It's a ridiculous (and stupid) argument. And yes, we all know Xbox Live costs money. 2 quid a month from here... Oh no, the heart ache.

Granted the PC version will be full of Mods. Some great, most dull.
I'm not playing to play just left 4 dead online. i'll be paying a massive sum of Ł5 a month. to have decent servers that won't creash every five minutes on all my online games.
Terrible that. Then again i know that thats probably more pocket money than you get a week and cheapskates always want something good for nothing.
Hold your horses Suivaloom, Resistance 2 has scored a lot higher than i expected i must admit, but it's only one review so far. Fable 2 has scored consistantly superbly, there's gears of war 2 to come, Fallout 3 is not a 360 exclusive but it's getting great scores(unlike the ps3 version). There's still banjo and left4dead to come yet and all the previews of left4dead suggest a massive sleeper hit.
I think you need to add up that little lot cos there's far more on the 360 than the ps3
I give you top marks for trying to take some kind of advantage with 2 titles. Even the wii's got more top rated games than that leading up to xmas. There's always next year for the ps3 i guess.

The mere fact you dismiss BK so readily speaks volumes of you. Banjo Kazooie was a stellar game on the N64, and, in many peoples opinion, actually surpassed (the also brilliant) Super Mario 64. To dismiss Banjo Kazooie is foolhardy. It's also NOT a violent or shooty game - something you constantly charge the Xbox 360 of solely having.

mr loon if you would just see that both systems are in a kind of deadlock at the moment you'd realise that this holiday season you have the oppourtunity to play some geat software on both systems. Mostly on the 360 though.
Gamespot gave Fallout 3 8.5/10 due to technical issues with the PS3 version. PSM complained about this too.

They'll release a patch, but it won't get rid of all the problems that plague that version(framerate issues etc). The ps3 is a pig of machine to program for(programmers hate it), they can't get the best out of it because of how poorly designed it is(compared to using a pc or 360 anyway).
I own both machines(360 and ps3)but definitely favour my 360 heavily. It's disappointing for sony only owners that one of the games of the year is far from that on the ps3. If you've got a decent pc, buy it for that instead(i know i have)
i don't normally like to get involved but here i go! Whilst were talking metacritic scores and the like lets take a look at the 360 and ps3 games that have received 90 plus
9 PS3 titles of which 2 are exclusive 18 360 titles of which 6 are exclusive
No offense, I own all 3 consoles and desperately want more quality PS3 exclusives but to even contemplate saying PS3 has the best line-up this year just goes to show how poorly PS3 is actually performing in that department. It's like when 360 came out and people tried to claim the launch games where better than anything on PS2, just to justify their purcahse. That's what alot of PS3 owners seem to be doing, trying to convince themselves the games are better than they are, to justify buying and sticking with the console. LBP I'll agree with, although it's hardly everyones cup of tea. Resistance 2 on the other hand, please don't waste your time and money. If you are desperate for a quality FPS on your PS3, get Far Cry 2...
who cares which has better games and will sell better? if you have a ps3 then enjoy LBP and R2 plus all of the multi platform games.
if you have an xbox enjoy gears 2, banjo or whatever plus the multi platform titles. at the end of the day its how much enjoyment you have not how well things score or sell.
agreed! Banjo is nothing compared to LBP, LBP has reinvented the game genere...banjo has brought nothing new to the table..deal with it.
I'd go so far as to say LBP is in a genre of its own so comparing it to banjo is fruitless, plus banjo isn't even out yet.

LBP is it's own genre? Although it does sound boss and I am more intrigued about it the more I see it.
Isn't it at heart a platform game with a very good level editor? Original it may be. An exceptional game it may be, but that's not a genre of it's own!
Nobody had done a puzzle game like Portal. It was a great original idea, but it is still a puzzle game at heart.
As someone else said PS3 has LBP, RFOM etc. 360 has GoW2, BK, etc. Gamers rejoice!
And also why do PC fanboys (there are a few) insist that people should by PC instead of console - not everybody has a powerful enough PC and you can now get a 360 for less than a decent gfx card. There's a credit crunch on man, haven't you heard???
Having more money than sense I went out and bought Fable 2, Dead space and Far Cry 2. I'm loving Fable 2...quality game with so much detail, humour and fun to be had, Dead Space is brilliant everything in it works so well and is the best survival horror I've played since Resi 2 on the PS2...and Far Cry 2...um well I played it for 20 minutes and then went back to Fable and Dead Space! I'm sure it gets better but it just didn't grab me.
I've read a few reviews of the PS3 version of Fallout 3 and they all agree it is inferior to the PC and 360 Version in quite a large way. I think its a bit of a poor show from Bethesda to do this, but as a guy from work said today who owns both consoles 'I think developers really can't be f**ked with the PS3 anymore' kind of sums it up.
The only home console without any big games this year is the Wii.
Er, whoops, eh Ninty? Love you and all, but come on, where are the hardcore games? The last big Wii game released was Super Smash Bros, and that was quite a few months ago. With things being so slow, this would have been the perfect time to release those GC updates for a budget price (so many people missed out on Pikmin and Metroid Prime first times round).
At least I have GOW2, Fable II, LBP and SR2 to keep me busy.
This is stupid. Sony need to slash the price of PS3. It's billed as a games console primarily. That means it's going up against Xbox 360 which only costs Ł170. If you were a parent/partner looking for a christmas present, which one would you pick?
