Gears of War 2 hits the streets this Friday and you don't need us to tell you it's awesome (even though we did here). But what games are tickling Cliff Bleszinski's fancy?
"Fable II looks cool. And Resident Evil 5 is next year, right? I'm dying for that, I loved RE4. Street Fighter IV looks sick, and Dead Space also looks solid. I'm a fan of horror games -- I loved Event Horizon and all of those movies, so they're making Dead Space for guys like me. That's my genre, and it looks great.
"I think Mirror's Edge will be great, too, but they're showing me too much parkour, I want to see the gunplay. I hope it's not all just running and jumping.
"As long as there's something chasing me...even Mario had Goombas, you know?"
Can I also find out what's on Cliffy B's shopping list? and how many times he brushes each side of his teeth at night? and if he picks his nose? and how many sh!ts he has in a day?
sum1's been too busy with there own game to check that mirrors edge is about getting away as fast as poss rather then a standard shooter, i like the concept too the demo wasnt all to bad i thought.
Cliffy B is the embodiment of everything I hate about the western market at this point in time. Where everything has to be "badass", "fuck yeah", "epic", and MUST have guns to blow shit up, otherwise it's no good.
I was massively underwhelmed by the Mirror's Edge demo. It just doesn't work for me. Style over substance methinks..
That seems to be what most people are saying, and I agree. There's only so long you can get away with jumping from rooftop to rooftop before it stops being cool.
And I hardly think you can claim that Cliffy doesn't know what he's doing. The Gears franchise is shaping up to be console-defining, and where would gaming be without UE3?

In a world with less cookie cutter games, poor art design and generally, LESS of the same shooters. Where would we be? In a more diverse world, by the sounds of things.
After having played the demo, its left me a little cold. On first impressions it feels new and fresh but after a couple of play throughs it does start to get pretty repetitive and the comabt was almost non existant.
I think Cliff has a point, when we first heard of Mirrors Edge it was a new kind of FPS and thats not really how this has turned out.
Respect and props to Dice for trying something different and hopefully the seqeul will be able flesh out the gameplay a bit more.
I tried the Mirror's Edge demo the other day died more than anything else. Don't get me wrong it's a great premise for a game, I just couldn't get to grips with it, and certainly the bit I played there was no gun play, I know it's there, but it's supposed to be such a small part of it.

It is a great idea though.
I've not tried the demo yet - I've been too busy with Fable 2 - but, I've always thought that this could fall into a bit of a repetitive trap.
It'd be nice to be proved wrong and find that it has some seriously strong gameplay features in the full game - the combat could be used as another obstacle on the map, it could be something that adds difficulty later in the game...not just as something where the player tries to get as many 'head-shots' in as possible.
All new ideas are always welcome, as far as I'm concerned.

Couldnt agree more, it has the premise of a great game but I think there going to have get the feedback form this one to make improvements in the next, which I would look forward to.
As far as Fable goes, that game has simply rocketed into my top 3 this year, easy. It is a wonderful game that has made me smile on countless occasions, and im still no where near completing it yet, though I did have my first baby last night, a healthy baby girl. As I said, brilliant game and I cant reccommend it highly enough.

Absolutely, I'm loving it.
I've already had a child (from my second marriage - yup, I'm a bigamist) and I'm currently a little stuck in the middle of a huge fight.
I finally managed to get some black dye last night to complete my characters look (he looks really cool - no shirt, buccaneer boots and a highwaymens mask with no hat...plus body tattoo and red eyes). I just need to get my hands on a really good cutlass!
It seems to be one of those games where you really don't want to get too stuck in to the main quest for fear of finishing it too early.
First off, grats on the baby Stonecold and on topic theres something bout Mirrors Edge thats underwhelming and a little dissapointing, cheap purchase though :]
Cliffy B is a moron, when he makes a decent and original game worth my money maybe then I'll value his opinion.
He probably thinks along with a lot of gamers that gears is an amazing game when in reality its as average as halo (ok mayb tht was harsh, anything is better than halo) and for being so eager abt the gun play you kind of give ammunition to the damn press or whatever abt the male gamer demographic playing only violent games and crap like tht.
About mirrors edge I thought the demo was pretty sick and always kinda had a matrix feel as if you were running away from agents. Sure it might get old but tht goes for every single game out there, just becoz you always shoot someone doesnt mean its always new and fun.
And I hardly think you can claim that Cliffy doesn't know what he's doing. The Gears franchise is shaping up to be console-defining, and where would gaming be without UE3?
Cliffy B has virtually nothing to do with the development of UE3. He's a game designer, not a programmer.
I for one thought the demo was great. Started boring but then what tutorial doesn't. But as soon as I was being chased for the first time I got a bit of an adrenaline rush. And stone cold...... it's gonna get boring playing the same 2 min demo again and again..... heh heh.

Well, Cliffy B - mad, rambling Yank that he is - has designed one (hopefully two) of my all-time favourite games, so he can say what he damn well likes. Not many people on this board have designed a 3-million-selling videogame to my knowledge.
With regards Mirrors Edge I thought the demo was painful. Not interested whatsoever. Great idea, lovely tech demo - looks a like a ball-ache to play.
I suppose when you accept that it's essentially a 1st person platformer, you can forgive the linearity a bit. The areas where you can pick a 'route' (or make a mistake, fall down and get back to where you're 'supposed' to be) are not far removed from Sonic on the Mega Drive really.
The problem for me, is running up stairwells in first person isn't challenging, (beyond seeing where you should be going) and isn't much fun. Judging exactly how close to a ledge you can get in first person before jumping (and falling to your death if you were a touch too early) isn't fun. For my money, it would have been better in third person, or heaven forbid was a traditional platformer, but then it wouldn't be seen as 'original' and 'ground-breaking'. Might have been a better game though! I can't quite see the point of having a game character performing Parkour moves if you can't see them?? Puzzled by popularity and hype on this one, really am..
Cliffy B doesnt show too much respect for other creators work.He has showed this already ,and this is just another example.
Maybe he wouldnt like so much when someone pointed to him some of the flaws of his games (Gears2 frame rate issues) or script (bald space marines fighting evil inhuman aliens ,gimme a break!).
As for Mirror Edge I dont know how it finally end up playing(game lenght ,variety ,etc) ,but its a absolutely incredible piece of tech .
He's probably not being paying too much attention to it considering you get get chased by guys shooting you with guns, and it's even possible to pick them up yourself. Maybe someone should tell him to give the demo a try?
As much as I want Gears 2 I want Mirrors Edge more. Such a refreshing game. And if you wanted gunplay in the demo why didnt you steal a guards gun?
I'm with you on this one. I loved the demo and have played it for a number of days now. Have you seen some of the gameplay on 1up yet? Stunning. Absolutely stunning!

I agree, Fable II is a magnificent game, I've been playing it for 2 weeks straight.
However it seems many people have been encoun tering numerous game-breaking glitches in the game and have had to restart their game from the beginning. (Check out Lionhead's Forums to see what I mean).
Lionhead are going to release a patch though to clean it all up, so if somebody is going to buy Fable II, I suggest they wait for the patch to come out first.
You have to laugh at some of these comments. Is the guy not allowed his own view/opinion? As for Mirror Edge, it's getting a fair bit of hype for being "different" and a "fresh" but in reality it's a platformer in FPS view. It's nothing new and spectacular. It's just adopting FPS as it's the most popular genre these days. Is that a good design decision, well time will tell when the reviews start to come in...
Really thought the demo was boring and just a cash-in on the growing popularity of Parkour.
I thought Parkour had died a death and these days could only be found in French b-movies until this came along.
Nope, from what I've read and seen recently in the media, it's very much in the ascendency with worldwide championships and even the BBC getting involved with promoting it at UK school level.
lol... the gunplay. f**k the gunplay. Does every game need to be based around guns? Oh hang on a sec. Epic Games... Unreal, Gears of War... Ah, now I can see how this confuses him. He likes greys, browns, generic characters and settings, and massive guns.
It's just sour grapes from Cliffy because he doesn't have the imagination to come up with something as amazing as Mirror's Edge, the best game of the year. Easily beats More of Same 2... also known as Gears of War 2.
Why does every one think that for a game to be good it has to have guns?! I think that this is a brillialant game thats tried something new and suceeded. And if you like guns then be happy that there are guns in it! Just steal one from a guard its easy! I think that this is probably the best game of the year.

I have to say, I have not played the game, so what you guys said there sounds really bizzarre.
Bizzare is certainly 1 way I would use to describe Fable 2, understated genius could be another.
And thanks to all those wishing me well with my new offspring , ill be expecting to have a baby shower soon.
Nobody congratulated me on the birth of my child.....is that because I'm blue, have red eyes and cheated on the kids' mum?
Don't judge me people!
If you think I'm bad - my brother actually sacrificed his wife!
Couple of questions StoneCold...
Have you found any better ways to stop yourself from getting fat? - I've been purely eating celery, but is there a better way?
How do you get your character to turn red? - I figure that's all down to your corruption level.
Im afraid I need to say no and no. I'm basically a fat bar steward who cant seem to shift the weight, ill need to try the eating of celery, havent tried that yet and as far as going red for my first play through I have been almost angelic and havent said boo to a goose, no doubt on the next play though ill a fire and brimstone red.

Definitely try the celery out - it'll give you a '+5 thin' bonus when you eat it. I tend to stick with celery and potions to get through.
I can't seem to work out how to turn red, but I really want to - I want horns too.
The dog looks really cool when you turn a little nasty too....but, I'll leave that for you to find out on your next play-through.

I cant wait to be bad, I was sorley tempted at some points but i resisted and made countless selfless acts.
The dog is brilliant, I actually got really worried the other night when after a big battle I was going off in an other direction, looked round and he was gone, started running around until I could hear him whimpering, I havent even tried to save any of my friends in co op games like i have making sure no one touches my dog.

Ol' Lockjaw (as I'm calling him) is brilliant - I was a little dubious about how he'd work, but there's certainly some emotional attachment there.
I've really enjoyed co-op, but I've not found a way to get my character in there when joining a game - is it possible?
I'm definitely going to be having another long Fable session tonight. I've literally just worked out a way to get myself out of the tight spot I'm in...then it's all about getting my character looking right and buying equipment and more houses.
Might even slaughter a village or two - being evil is so much fun.
The new james bond game could of had mirrors edge style bits in it to relate to the pakour going on within the films, would of been very cool touch. As an entire game not sure wether it will have the substance or depth to go past the intial wow factor of "this is different"? I do hope im wrong! Plus the games gun shooting mechanics from the demo felt like just an after thought... disarms are amazing though! Reminded me of the Rock in film Welcome to the Jungle, where he just doesn't like guns. They took him to a bad place! lol
Mirror's Edge is best game of the year? Seriously??
Played the demo and it is OK. I got tired of it quite quickly, so can't imagine the full game will hold my attention.
More of the Same 2 aka Gears of War 2? That is a sharp wit right there! Although I agree, Epic do go for macho, gun toting games. Subtlety is not high on the agenda!
