Treyarch: CoD 4 "emphasised multiplayer to us"

Last game proved it was "very important" World at War focused on multiplayer, says producer
Call of Duty: World at War developer Treyarch says the massive success of Call of Duty 4 - and specifically its fantastic stat-collecting online mode - forced it to focus on multiplayer with its WWII spin-off.

Speaking to CVG in a recent interview, senior producer Noah Heller said World at War has built on the "excellent" platform of CoD4 with co-op and vehicles.

"I think what [Modern Warfare's success] did most of all is emphasise multiplayer to us," said Heller. "In the olden days of CoD you had multiplayer and you had single-player and they never meet. CoD 4 was a multiplayer sensation so it was very important that we focused on multiplayer and that we got a chance to show our own multiplayer.

"Our multiplayer's definitely built off CoD4 because it was an excellent platform to build off," he continued. "We wanted to bring vehicles into play... and above and beyond that we knew that co-op was a multiplayer experience. Co-op to us is the bridge between multiplayer and single-player."

The Treyarch man said that the developer dealt with the tricky job of matching Modern Warfare's hi-tech kit by beefing up the power of it's own arsenal.

"In the previous Call of Dutys it might take three or four shots from a bolt action rifle," he explained. "We made sure that a single shot centre mass would kill that opponent because that's the expectation of the player."

World at War is in the shops next Friday. Read Xbox World's most recent thoughts here.

Downloaded the demo/beta last night and had real problems locating a game, gave up after about 5/6 minutes. Not the start to the new COD I was after..

i played the beta last night too, if i hadn't played COD4 online before i would think it's amazing but it just doesn't quite top it. The guns don't feel powerful and the fact it's back to WWII has limited my enjoyment.

I don't think so, it's always been one shot bolt kills in CoD games except for World at War. Basic damage from bolt rifles in original CoD is 120, in CoD2 it's 90, and in the CoD:WW beta it's 50 Confused

multiplayer important in cod5? Pity they've gimped it then with poor maps and awful weapon balancing; and the dogs bonus is awful

My sentiments exactly. I found the beta pretty enjoyable overall but I can't shake the feeling that the weapons lack 'grunt' compared to Modern Warfare. Even the frag grenade seems strangely muted!?!

What I've seen of the maps is encouraging though, I especially enjoyed 'Roundhouse'. I just wish Treyarch had tried to come up with something a little different for the Kill streak system/Perks. For Recon plane read UAV recon and for Mortar attack read Airstrike. The dogs are a step in the right direction but most of the rest feels like Modern Warfare dressed in old fashioned clothing!

Then again maybe I'm being a little harsh. How do you go about changing an almost faultless online shooter when the mechanics of it are near perfect to begin with?

When CoD4 was developed a completely seperate division within Infinity Ward worked solely on the multiplayer. The focus was to make it a completely stand alone experience with references to the main single player story so the player could associate certain maps, regions and weapons etc. The end result was a total winner. The feeling I'm getting from World at War is one of a game that stands on the shoulders of it predecessor rather than treads new ground.

I briefly tried out the beta last night (I fully intend to revisit it for longer, so my opinion may change). My initial though was...'Isn't this just CoD4 with a different skin'? Sure, I liked CoD4 as much as the next man, but do I really part with my hard earned for a game which is nigh on identical to a previous game I own, and the major differences are, from what I have seen, for the worse?

What he said.

i like the new cod a cant rle knock it tbh love it except the 2nd bolt action rifle with a scope on its bloody awefull but with a bayonett is awesum lol

shame theres only 3 maps bt a suppose ya cant complain haha it was free so thats good enuf for me lol

things i love about it are
. the dogs they're awesum
. the names of some of the perks such as camoflage , toss back n shades made me laff lol
. i like that they included a party system and hardcore tdm n snd

things that i dont like
. that they clearly ripped off some of the perks n bonuses(uav, airstrike) and challenges(most) off cod4
. that they're isnt a map with the british army in just like in cod3 where online 1 side was called allies bt it was only americans ConfusedConfused which is basically sayin the rest of the world did nothing and on here (ano its only the beta) its just russians v germans n americans v japaneese it would have been nice if we wer included
. acog scopes , silencers , black dot sightsConfused in ww2 hmmmmmmm another rip off from cod4

things that i thought could have been added
. on a 10/15/20 upwards kill streak ya get another bonus like extra ammo or summat because theres nothing 2 strive 4 after 7 except getting a high kill streak

all in all i think this could b a good game decent online(hopefully) good single player(again hopefully) bt its still lacking in killer ideas

and also i think instead of ww2 go to somewer like vietnam,faulklands,ww1,afghanistan,iraq,cold war era maybe some other war except ww2 that hasnt rle been touched if ever so that could b a good idea for either treyarch or infinity ward 2 consider

How about they focus on both single AND multi player? CoD4 managed it perfectly. People will argue that its too short but it was a brilliant cinematic ride while it lasted.

After the horrible CoD3 I don't hold out much hope for this.

ok, i know this isn't quite the discussion going on here, but i seem to remember on COD3 - this was on hard, by the way, that with the Lee Enfield (Bolt action rifle) that it killed a guy in 1?
