Call of Duty: World at War received its first 10/10 review score in the latest issue of PSW magazine.
"Modern Warfare was pretty much the best game on PS3 for the last year," PSW said, adding: "So to hold the position that it's sequel, World At War, is a better game, is surely to stir up some controversy. That's right, Treyarch has toppled Infinity Ward."

"World At War takes everything great about Modern Warfare and adds to it; co-op, creative Perks, new tech (dynamic flames), more elaborate maps and the Left4Dead baiting secret game mode Nazi Zombie - all of this pushes Call Of Duty into a new direction," it adds (via its blog).
World at War "raises the bar for all war games", says PSW, giving top marks to Treyarch's effort, which runs on the same engine as Infinity Ward's CoD 4.
Treyarch did good then, it seems. So which of the many incredible games are getting your money this Christmas?
Not really fussed about another WWII FPS anyway with all the other games knocking about at the moment. Something with a modicum of originality like Mirror's Edge is much more appealing. I'll pass.
Well, just like the night before I tried to get onto the beta last night and yet again, couldnt! It actually said there were 0 Players Online, anyone else had any issues?
i saw the mag just now, was tempted to get it with having a review, but i never bother with PSW anymore, i only stick to PSM3. i dont care that its another WW2 shooter, they never bore me, i like my WW2 shooters, because im into the history of WW2.
WHOA!! Seems a lot of people who haven't played this are getting p**sed that it's got full marks! Chill out it might be good...
If WW2 isn't your cup of tea don't buy it there are plenty of people who will. I love FPS and although WW2 has been done to death I'm gonna give this one a chance cos I love the COD franchise. So long as it's better than Medal of Honor: Pacific Assault (or whatever it was called) I'll be happy to shoot some more randoms in the face!
Well, just like the night before I tried to get onto the beta last night and yet again, couldnt! It actually said there were 0 Players Online, anyone else had any issues?
my only problem is that sometimes i get server authercation errors, get signed out and hard to get connected again, once i join a game i get disconnection right away, but once its fine, im just pure rubbish lol. im on the PC beta and honestly, im no good with PC shooters, im only good on a console.
Well at least it was a positive review! It could have been a crap review. Single player stuff, well, I'll be doing that online anyhow, and mainly buying it as a new map pack and gun pack for COD4. Zombie mode will be cool online co-op I do agree that this new "thing" for perfect scores is pathetic! Nothing is perfect. Like I said this for me a is a new map and gun pack for COD4, so if I want modern, COD4, if I fancy new(WWII) maps and guns, COD: WAW, I'll be keeping both and playing both online.

Even though it says "zero online" there are still people out there, you just need to wait a little longer for it to set up a list of players. I'm sure it's just that there are so many new players their counter can't keep up.
Still not going on my list. Disliked the beta so much I deleted it from the 360 a couple of weeks ago.
For a CoD4 mod, it's pretty solid. For a standalone full-price game I found the multiplayer really lacking. My issues have been raised already, I won't go into it again.

I probably gave it about 4/5 minutes both nights before giving up and putting Dead Space or Fable back in the tray. Is it worth it though, I have a copy of Gears in my hand getting ready to leave work in about ... 36 minutes (not that im counting) and dont know when Ill get the time to play the beta.
There are 1 or 2 demos ive missed recently; End War and Tomb Raider, I guess thats 2 games that will slip me by right now.
Playstation mags always give really stupid and way too high scores. Its like none of the reviewers in these mags have ever played games before. And a 10/10 for a CoD game? F**k off!!
There seems to be so many people out there who have already made up their mind about World at War. They don't like it. Period. It really doesn't matter what the rest of us think about it, it doesn't matter if it gets great review scores, it won't matter if it's the christmas number 1. Like every game, there are people who just won't like it. Some people don't like it simply because of the WWII setting. Fair enough. Each to their own. But many of these people have decided they don't like it because it's developed by Treyarch. And these people will stick to their guns, no matter what. If there's a gaming equivalent of racism, this is it.
I cant see how its gotten 10, but il give it a chance, Even if it gets mainly 9's it wll show the game has done well with its attempt to reinvent the WW2 genre. As far as games for xmas...ahh...where to start
I have Fallout 3 PES 2009
but I WANT
LBP Midnight CLub LA Resistance 2 COD5 Skate 2 (not sure if thats released before xmas) Kill Zone 2
If I get all them then id like to play Spiderman WOS Smackdown ...ahhh good year for games
I can respect that Treyarch have made a good game but the fact that they needed Infinity award to make the engine and multiplayer themselves while Treyarch just reskinned everything and made small changes means I don't think it should be higher than CoD4

Your loss. You've just shown why you disliked the game. You didn't play it enough to get good at it. I'm sick of people playing the beta (a BETA) for a few games, getting their butt kicked then quitting, saying they hate it. You have to give yourself time to get used to it. Play for a while and get used to it before you write it off.
BTW, having played the game (on all game modes and maps), I completely agree with a 10/10 rating!

here here! i find that a lot now, theres too many ppl thinking the beta is just an demo and then deicde its not for them, a beta is just a work in progress, not the final product, it will have changes.
i also agree that this game deserves a good score, im loving the beta, even if im crap on the PC (but brillinat on CoD4 PS3) and running it on very low specs to run it (even lags a bit), but this will still be an outstanding game as its just like CoD4 which IS an outstanding game.
Ginjaninge- killzone 2 isnt out for about 3 months, so you got plently of time to get those others you want.
Metacritic makes sense as it gives you an average, I cant see how it will beat cod4 and IMO BFBC tops them all online!!
Metacritic can't be trusted! The readers reviews are totally corrupted and reports like this mean that some of the reviews from mags used to give an average are biased. http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2007/Sep07/09-19MSNVarietyPR.mspx
When asked if they would stop using Variety in their scores (as they were owned by Microsoft) Metacritic said they saw no reason why not to use them.
Regardless of the fact that 10/10 is equal to 100% no game will get 100%. No game will ever deserve it because that assumes it is perfect. A percentage score converted would only need to be 95%+ to get 10/10 status. This score is achieved and deserved by many games. This is one reason why Metacritic which deals in percentages gets so messed up with 10/10 and 5/5 ratings. If it is better than COD4 then it does deserve the 10/10, but you have to take this type of grading with a pinch of salt people. Don't get in such a tizzy.
Ask yourselves this. What is a review, really? Isn't it one man's honest and unbiased opinion? What right do you have to criticize it? Have you played the game extensively and spent hours trying to find the right words to express your feelings about it? Are you of sane mind when you're writing your ridiculous posts?
If you spend just five seconds contemplating these questions then you will see just how foolish and childish you're acting.
Bravo2Zero...This is true but i still dont have the cash...although I dont think il be getting Resistance2 KZ2 and Cod5... i like shooters but ...not that much! Going to have to pick one...maybe two.
I hate f****** losers who diss a game who haven't seen it, played it or bash it cos it's made by whoever or on whatever console. If you are sick of WW2 games, how long before you get sick of sci-fi RTS, ye olde RPG, futuristic FPS or play sport games with new teams year on year. Don't like games go f****** read a book, take up knitting, eat out but spread your negative s**t on some real f******* issues like knife crime, recession, domestic violence, people dying from starvation. F******** w******.
been playing the beta, and to me it just seems like a cod4 mod or expansion.Everything just feels the same as cod4 but with ww2 weapons etc.in my opinion its a rip off at Ł39.99 when really it isnt a full game.Dont get me wrong, i thought cod4 was amazing, just feel the small maps got a bit boring after a while as you werent able to go very far
Hmmmm.....If playstation mags give this 10/10, and Xbox mags give it 9/10, will people think the PS3 copy is the better version? ...........
It's possible but I think it says more about the person that thinks that than it does about a review. The difference between a 9 and 10 is minimal in my opinion and could just be down to different reviewers opinions. A score of 9 or 10 (or even 8 for that matter) means a fantastic game in either case. This game needs to be good to make it against some serious competition on both formats. I love the way people complain about it offering nothing new but wasn't that the main criticism against Gears of War 2? It didn't exactly hurt that.
sfunny but i didnt fancy this game after playing cod4 so much, but after giving cod3 another go, i thought i wouldnt mind a descent ww2 shooter with the cod4 engine, and it looks like that what treyarch has given us...
My money might not even go on games this christmas but if it does there is no way Im buying another shooter. I'm sick of them the only ones i still play are Halo 3 and the first Gears. I'll probably buy something a bit more unique like Fable 2, the new prince of persia (which for some reason I've heard nothing about lately) or Mirrors Edge.
Quite surprised by the 10/10 score but hopefully there will be a demo before or around release.
We all know it's going to play well using the COD4 engine,it's just a matter of whether the game sucks you in like COD4 did with great set pieces and one of the greatest levels ever (sniper mission).
I hope it is good though as i haven't played a really good WW2 game for some time now.
have you guys seen that blog with the IW guy going mental cause cod4 keeps getting compared to this game
nope,link please.
why people are picking on one ps3 mag is beyond me,EVERY mag is full of sh!t. witness gta IV's 98% scores across the board or mags that claimed halo 3 deserved a perfect 10 despite the unfinished single player, auto aim riddled mutiplayer and dodgy graphics. (i'm looking at you edge,r.i.p)
reviewers fall for the hype everytime and then pass it on in ridiculously glowing reviews.
as for cod:whatever the f*ck it is. as someone else said, look at it as a cod4 mod: more of the same with a different coat of paint.

Funny as f**k,tell it like it is or what.
Im personally delighted at the amount of must have games this year,im also delighted that Treyarch have managed to better one of the best shooters ever made, hats off to them.
And there is still Mirrors Edge and POP to come. Now would not be a good time for my 360 to get the dreaded RROD,id go f**king mental.
Having played the BETA, i'm still in no position to say whether or not it beats COD, but if you think COD4 is the best game in the world, then going by the BETA, COD5 is at the very least the 2nd best game in the world, thus fully deserving the 10/10 it achieved.

fair enough. i,on the other hand, don't even think that 4 is the best cod of the series: that's between the first 2.
5 hour single player modes just don't do it for me. add in the console (read:gimped) 18 player mp mode compared to 50 player as standard on pc,paid dlc,no mod tools etc...
that's why i got rid of the 360 version once i'd put the 1000 in.
Good for Treyarch if they have made a great game and proved the masses wrong, even if I do think the COD franchise is a tad overrated (how many other games can get away with respawning dozens of the exact same soldier out of a closet, and only stopping once you pass an invisible line).
I just hope they have got the Wii controls right, then it will be truly great.

I'm sorry, the last paragraph and a bit i just couldn't understand. And 5 hours? Maybe iif you didn't die at all. Also, i highly doubt many people out there will be riding their personal opinions on the game of how it plays offline, it'll just be an added bonus to them. Oh and also, now, not that i don't appreciate your opinion/viewpoint, but what does the console vs PC version have to do with it?
I can't believe how many people have judged the game on playing 3 maps on a beta! Remember, there's also a one player campaign that none of us have played, nor have we tried all the weapons etc! To call it a COD4 expansion pack in just stupid!

it's easily beatable in 5 hours, try a full game challenge in the arcade mode.
i may be in the minority in this day and age but i still demand a pretty robust single player allied to a class multiplayer- a balance the likes of goldeneye, half life and, while not in the same league as those 2,halo achieved.
it's a shame that the single player seems to have been relegated to the position of afterthought but to each his own. (if that's the attitude of most gamers,i can see why most developers only make 5 hour single player modes now)
oh and to be fair, you're right, format differences are meaningless in the context of this forum.
Of course it was going to be better than COD gameplay wise they`ve been able to look at it and see what flaws there were(like the hilariously unfair matchups, and martyrdom)and improve ,my(and i presume most othe peoples)problem with the game is they`ve essentially taken someone elses(spelling)game made a few changes and passed it off as their own ,if they did`t have the license(spelling) they`d be done for fraud simple as that.

I think they'd make a smaller single player game regardless. Usually i would find the campaign mode more important, but in the case of COD, where i've played it offline for about.. 20 hours maybe, but online about 600, i take it you can guess which one i'd want to be better. I know that wont be the attitude of everyone, but i'm guessing it'll be the attitude of most.
Also, i thought COD4 offline was pretty darn good, certainly one of the better offline games i've played, so i can't really make too many complaints there, even if it is small. It sounds to me like you didn't like it? Or are you just sour that it was short. I very much doubt that COD5's campaign will be under par either.
some footage of the wii version,if anyone's interested. character models are awful but the levels are quite impressive and the cod4 engine has ported over better than expected: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=JTAVPcmEzDE&feature=related

I was gonna say the same thing. To suggest Treyarch have 'done it' is pretty misleading really. I've played the Beta, and as I said elsewhere, this feels exactly like CoD4, only re-skinned. Many people clearly have no issue with this, and that's fine, I can totally empathise with the 'I want more' feeling. However, it was Infinity Wards CoD that was so applauded, not Treyarchs. What Treyarch have done is take IWs game, re-skin it and tweak things, and make the guns feel useless. If reviewers want to applaud anyone, they should be directing it at Infinity Ward IMO.
Personally, I feel Treyarch haven't done nearly enough to make this their own game. Keeping nigh on identical 3/5/7 kill streak effects (the dogs aside which, while I hate them, shows that a modicum of thought went into them) was not only an opportunity missed, but smacks of laziness or a lack of creativity.
If this was 15-20 quid of DLC for CoD4, I suggest we'd all be singing its praises, but the fact is, this is a full price, full retail game, which feels COMPLETELY identical to the previous installment, only in a different time period.
I'll be very interested to see what the single player campaign is like, I'd love to think Treyarch could change my opinion.
have you forgotten that these were the guys that made ALL of the Call of Duty series, except for the last one.
Call of Duty franchise would never exist without them because they are their creators.
So we must give them credit to prove their skills in this new one. (specially because Call of Duty 3 is one of my favourite FPS off all time)
sorry there pal but Infinity Ward created the COD series. Treyarch are just along for the ride. on the game itself, it certainly feels a lot like COD4 but with less meaty sounding weapons. its a good blast but not good enough to tear me away from gears2 and LBP just now

Wow. You're just... So wrong... I can't believe it.
I didn't even have to go far to prove you wrong:
Infinity Ward's first title, Call of Duty, won over 80 Game of the Year awards[1] and 47 Editor's Choice Awards[2]. The sequel, Call of Duty 2 for the Xbox 360 and PC has sold more than one million units in the U.S. alone[3].
So the answer is: no, we didn't forget that Treyarch made Call of Duty because Treyarch didn't make Call of Duty. Infinity Ward made Call of Duty, Call of Duty 2 and Call of Duty 4. Treyarch only made Call of Duty 3 and now are working on World at War, using an Engine made by Infinity Ward.
Except keeping it fresh and modern, but instead choosing to go back to the tired and overmilked WWII setting.
Treyarch did good then, it seems. So which of the many incredible games are getting your money this Christmas?
Not WaW. I've already bought Fallout 3 so the next game I'm awaiting is Empire: Total War on Feb. 6th, 2009. I'll wait to see what Infinity Ward does with the next CoD game should they make another one. If it's set in WWII as well then I won't buy that one either. I'm sick and tired of it. Move on (like IW did with CoD4)!
Wow, hell of a lot of twisted up panties on here...
Just a pointer on the 10/10, 'perfect' score... It's not perfect. Nothing can be, that's impossible. What a 10/10 means is that by standards the game offers a superlative experience on all fronts, and the developer has just nailed it in every area.
Personally I'll be interested to see how Edge rate it as I trust their reviews 100%, but I will be picking it up anyway, I like FPS's and I like Call of Duty. Try to remember that reviewers are one persons opinion. A lot of reviews didn't like Assassins Creed, but for all it's faults, I loved it.
As for so many games getting high scores recently, well duh, it's the Xmas period, you know, the time when all the good stuff gets released? Just so happens a lot of good shooters have come out too (Gears, Far Cry, Fallout kind of, Resistance, CoD...)
