Nintendo coy on HD Wii

Miyamoto says the company's not "relaxed and soft on graphics" though
Nintendo design legend Shigeru Miyamoto is remaining tight-lipped about the possibility of the company releasing an HD Wii, but he certainly didn't rule out the idea when quizzed recently.

"I'm afraid we cannot confirm what we are doing today," he said when asked whether Nintendo is planning to release a high definition Wii.

"But the fact of the matter is that technology is evolving all the time and in Japan, for example in the year 2010 all the analogue broadcast will be stopped and shifted into the digital broadcasting. So many things are taking place and we are working in terms of the changes of the technologies all the time."

Miyamoto also said that it's a misconception that Wii isn't possible of meeting the level of graphical quality hardcore gamers want.

"... When it comes to specific points such as generating high definition graphics we might appear to be rather relaxed and soft on graphics," he acknowledged.

"However, the fact of the matter is that Wii is capable enough to cater to the needs of these hardcore gamers in terms of gameplay content as well as the graphical content, so I really don't want people to be concerned about that kind of attitude."

A bit too non-committal for our liking, although we reckon an HD Wii is a fair bet. However, with Wii sales still off the chart two years after the console released we think it will be a while yet, just like industry analyst Michael Pachter.

A couple of months back the Mystic Meg of the industry said Nintendo would likely launch a high definition Wii in the next two to three years should the prices of graphics processors and CPUs come down sufficiently.

You can see the full Miyamoto interview here.

Not that I own one, but I thought the Wii could output at SD and HD resolutions. Or is not the full 1920x1080 and merely 1280x720?

From the N64 forward...Nintendo's blurry textures have always remained a mystery to me. I'm not technical when it comes to this aspect of gaming so do forgive me if I'm missing a trick here, but is there any logistical excuse for this much blur in the HD generation?

This is not one of those smarmy rhetorical questions, I genuinely don't get it. I think Wii HD would be a great idea.

Most Ninty owners wouldn't now the difference, so what's the point?

The N64 was blurry to hide the Aliasing in the 3D graphics. The PS1 was far crisper but this then showed the horrible jaggies. GC was not blurry at all and the Wii certainly is not blurry. Metroid Prime and Galaxy are both crisp as fresh Iceburg Lettuce.

They are obviously going to be a bit shy on details for the next console as they do not want to hurt sales of the current one. This is something true of all 3 companies.

perhaps they could bring out a HD "add on" or "adaptor" that the wii sits in. Then u could go "HD" if u wanted to or stay in blurrovision.??

If only it were that easy.

With a component cable, the picture on my telly is completely blur-free, and so those of you who find this matter a big issue should go out, get themselves one and see the difference. GameWare cables are only Ł12.99 and still work very well, so if you don't do it (and you have an HDTV), you're practically insane.

Neither the GameCube or Wii particularly suffer from blurry graphics. Indeed, the GameCube iteration of Resident Evil 4 was (in my opinion) the best looking/textured game of the last generation.

480 output is perfectly acceptable and games such as Metroid Prime Corruption and Mario Galaxy look great, regardless of whatever resolution you play them in (and that's after me owning and seeing the much higher spec/output of the PS3).

Stop saying hardcore gamer!!!!

anyway it should be pretty easy, but i don't really see any reason to do it. The wii is selling incredibly well. I kinda got it in my head that nintendo (consoles) equals gameplay, not so much graphics and that they are cheap enough te get besides my "Real" console.

I will agree entirely with him when they release a game on Wii that looks as good as Fable 2...

...whats that? They can't? Oh, well! I'll just have to stay on the progress side of technology...

Gotta agree with ya there spoon man - hated the wii when I first got it, couple of days later got my component cable and some 480p goodness and i'm loving it! Mario Galaxy still looks awesome, even when I stick it on after gears 2/halo 3 etc.

God bless HDTV Smile

I'm sorry dude, but what planet are you on? Fable 2 is one of the worst looking games on the 360 for a while Confused

Cheers for clearing that up, that one has always puzzled me Smile

I would be willing to bet anyone that there will never be an HD Wii. I do believe though that the next Nintendo console will be HD. It just won't be called Wii or Wii 2...

There have been a lot of articles about an HD Wii about the internet and it really annoys me.
